    The History of the Battleship Yamato: A Symbol of Power and Tragedy
    The battleship Yamato was a colossal warship built by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) in the lead-up to World War II. It was the largest and most heavily armed battleship ever constructed, displacing over 72,000 tons and boasting nine massive 46 cm (18.1 inch) guns.
    Conception and Construction:
    Designed in the 1930s: The Yamato was conceived as a response to the growing American battleship fleet. Japan knew it couldn't compete in numbers, so they aimed for overwhelming firepower in individual ships.
    Secret Construction: The Yamato's construction began in 1937 in great secrecy, with the project shrouded in national pride and military ambition.
    Commissioning in 1941: The ship was formally commissioned in December 1941, just after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
    Early War Service:
    Flagship of the Combined Fleet: Throughout 1942, the Yamato served as the flagship of the Combined Fleet, with Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto commanding the fleet from its bridge during the Battle of Midway.
    Limited Action: Despite its immense firepower, the Yamato saw little action in the early years of the war, primarily serving as a deterrent and symbol of Japanese naval might.
    Later War and the Final Mission:
    Shifting Tides: As the war turned against Japan, the Yamato's role became more desperate. Fuel shortages and the growing threat of American air power limited its effectiveness.
    Operation Ten-Go: In April 1945, the Yamato was sent on a one-way suicide mission to attack the American forces invading Okinawa.
    Sinking at Okinawa: With minimal air support and facing overwhelming American carrier-based aircraft, the Yamato was sunk on April 7, 1945, marking a symbolic defeat for the Japanese Navy.
    Legacy:
    End of an Era: The sinking of the Yamato effectively ended the era of the battleship as the dominant naval weapon, highlighting the rise of aircraft carriers and air power.
    Symbol of National Pride: The Yamato remains a powerful symbol of Japanese national pride and technological prowess, despite its tragic end.
    A Reminder of War's Cost: The story of the Yamato serves as a stark reminder of the immense human and material cost of war.

    I think tackling all that photo etch would be enough to send some modelers straight to the looney bin. i did enjoy seeing it though as it is completely over the top. The instructions were next level. I hope other manufacturers such as the one that builds your AHHQ 1/16 kits would take note and up their game.

      Ive got revell platinum edition tirpitz, the etch is mental! Gun barrels are all tiny, but theres no 3d stuff the kit barrels have to be cut off, holes drilled and the brass ones fitted, instructions are complicated this looks way better!

      I have to agree. The deluxe kit is a stunning kit but I am not great with PE and I think I would lose the will to live half way through. It would take me months to build it

    I can see this taking at least a gallon of paint(s) and a quart of CA and other adhesives to complete. Not complaining though.The engineering alone that went into producing this kit is mind boggling. And as a former US Navy Machinist Mate, I applaud the hull detail depicting all the seawater inlets and outlets on the bottom of the hull. No idea how accurate they are, but glad to see them included!

    I think I will stick with my Premium Tamiya kit. I have the wood deck and Eduard's PE sets for it. Plus the separate de-gausing cable set from Tamiya.

  • @loki7441
    @loki7441 Месяц назад

    I used a Very Fire PE kit to upgrade the Tamiya Tirpiz. The PE kit had a few issues, but all said and done it turned a 1970's ship shaped blob of plastic into a great looking model. To be fair To Tamiya, most model ships of the era were very blobish in the detail. But Tamiya were on top of the game. I have used Eduard PE and their instructions and quality are A1. I bought a Gold Medal kit for the Revell Queen Mary 2 again the instructions and PE top class. I have about ten frets from the Very Fire PE with various amounts of parts that are no part of Tirpitz left over. Study the parts carefully before building and decide if it is better to use the kits small deck gun fittings over the PE. Some of the gun mounts are over complicated and extremily fragile. The 3D parts were not really on stream five years back, but the replacement lifeboats and Arados were great. As was the wooden deck, it fit well. A coat of clear varnish helps it stay stuck to the plastic and a weathering wash before you position it. Much easier off the ship. The instructions , well pretty vauge. 12 sheets of photos and part numbers that didnt relate to the frets. Annoying.

    Andy, what is the reasoning for the 3d printed turrets? Is there a detail advantage to those over the turrets from the sprue? More detailed (I’d think not but maybe!)

    • @Thornbeard
      @Thornbeard Месяц назад +2

      High quality commercial 3d printing can create details that injection molding can not do. The drawback is the fragile nature of resin 3d printing. But it looks with the cage around the part like in this kit that problem has been solved.

    • @73north
      @73north 22 дня назад +1

      I've used 3D printed parts for 1/350 Turrets for Hood and Repulse , from Micro Master of New Zealand. The level of enhanced detail , plus the actual 3D turret is correct , with no accuracy issues. The 3D turrets made a difference, downside not cheap..but better than the injection plastic

    Hi Andy, appears to be a lot of damaged parts in your plastic kit and a bent mast. The basic plastic kit does not looks as detailed as the most recent Tamiya kit and personally I would not buy into the basic kit. However all the damaged parts appear to be replaced by etch in the deluxe edition. Verifier etch is very nice a s a rule but also amongst the most delicate to build. there are some omissions like the moulded on degausing cable that looks wrong and many modellers would want to replace with etching. nice to see the 3D printed sand bags were the correct shape as tamiya got that wrong. on the whole looks a great kit, a challenger for the Tamiya ultimate kit? I am not convinced would possibly depend on the price?

      @@ModelkitStuff not disagreeing with you, especially if it was at full retail ($470/£370ish) I would be inspecting closely before swiping the card. Will give Andy credit for his customer service and dealing with issues, so I do have faith in his company. Trust, but verify, and the packaging will be looked at before accepting. (Helps that I can get it held at the terminal for the major shipping company I drive big trucks for and refuse on initial sight) At the preorder price ($300/£235) I'd be willing to risk it, with those caveats. For a 200 scale, a tad pickier.

    I help out at a center with the kids in the town. I am not for sure if you discount these kids that you open up and show. But if you do discount them, I would buy all the kids from you at a discount. The kids would really appreciate learning how to build models. The kids are poor and most of them do not have a phone to play on which i am glad of that. But even the kids that do have phones. I am trying to learn them that there is a lot more in life than playing on their phone. Like I said, if you ever take a kit apart for your videos to show them. I will buy them from you if they are discounted afterwards.
