I purchased the GH5S about a month ago. I am still AMAZED at its low light capability and all the other very usable 'high end' features plugged into it. I have been a Canon shooter my entire career even using my R6 models for very good video (1080 is what I shoot in due to the overheating 4k debacle) and I find that the GH5s is my personal favorite now. I really think it is a beast of a camera and punches well above its weight. I am just thrilled to own it and keep it in front of me while I am at my computer editing photos/vides. I am not pale in my complexion by genetics but I am just tickled pink. Fine job guys in this video. I learned a lot and it just made me stick my chest out even further knowing I own this baby! Thank you.
Well done guys... I just got a GH5S and starting to work with it. Loving the freedom of working with non-primes like the 7-14 f/4 in low light as well.
No doubt that Leica 8-18 is my go to, but once in a while I need just a tiny bit more for certain shots. Just uploaded my first impressions, and an example of that, to our channel with some thoughts, ideas, and low light samples. Cheers on the good work you are doing all around!
Sony and Panasonic really do team up to make AMAZING cameras. Sony sensors (IMX 272 and IMX294) with Panasonic color processing and BOLD marketing testicles are really a dream duo. As a Sony guy that LOVES his GH5,...I'm floored again. WOW!
Great interview :) I've seen multiple Panasonic reps being asked about the IBIS omission on the GH5s and Sean is the only one who explained it in a way that was satisfactory.
[CHRIS] We love your videos, Hugh. Unfortunately the weird audio and constant beeping made us watch the video in small pieces. But on to the real comments. We are m43 shooters (we own 3 G85s), and the bottom line is the smaller sensor can cause enough compromises, at least for us, that we need to supplement, and eventually replace the m43 setup with something APS-C or FF. I’m talking harder to achieve bokeh, harder to achieve wide angle, and of course low light performance. I know Panasonic is sticking with the m43 right now, but how long before they add a larger sensor to their lineup? We would so love that, as their ergonomics, UI, features, are just so compelling. At this point I would go with an A7Sii for the price of the GH5s, despite it’s annoying “Sony” flaws.
Two Bit da Vinci I understand (the weird audio - and your concerns over m43). I’d go straight to the a7R III. The EVA-1 is Super35 with Canon EF Mount, but it is in another price class altogether. Unclear what bokeh or wide angle you need that you can’t get with m43. Are you familiar with the 0.95 Noktons? New Panny/Leica 8-18? In any event, the audio was me not being familiar with izotope RX6 on the one hand, and a rush to get it published. Won’t happen again.
[CHRIS] Thanks for the comments Hugh. We need to look at the a7R III and maybe see what the a7S III has to say when it comes out. EVA-1 probably not the form factor we are looking for. Not saying you can't get bokeh or wide angle on m43, but the selection is limited and prices fairly high. Not here to bash m43, as we own 3 of them, but starting to realize we might need to ADD something to our kit...like an a7 Series from Sony. Biggest problem with Sony is how poor the menu system is, and how limited their touchscreens are. But who knows, if Panasonic and Sony have a baby, perhaps the perfect camera (for us), will finally be born! Not holding our breath though, and resigned to investing in more than one system. And totally understand rushing to put something out, we certainly have had our share of bad audio. Looking forward to the next one, your voice and insights are like soothing zen meditation; but with information & gear!
No IBIS... I always feel bad for this rep because he always feels pressured to go the extra mile to justify a flaw on a Panny rather than just own up to it. You can turn off the IBIS on the GH5 so the high end crews who don't need IBIS wouldn't have to use it. No, this was either a technical, heat synch issue or a marketing strategy. The fact of the matter is, sure nice big professional crews won't usually need IBIS and would prefer it off--but those same nice big crews have the time, money, equipment, and manpower to light low-light spaces--and they don't have to worry about the attention that stabilization rigs attract because they have permits. The primary filmmakers who need a low light camera are the exact same people who probably don't have the time, money, equipment, or permits for stabilization rigs--especially since you still need to pull focus on the gh5s.
You cant just turn off IBIS, the problem isnt IBIS its the sesnor mounting system that picks up resonant frequencies. That is why Leica doesnt use IBIS; they carve the body out of a solid block of metal and stick the sensor to it so it cant move. Really the only people who will buy this wont care about IBIS rest of humanity doesnt need a specialist camera they will buy GH5 and G9 and those have excellent IS.
You might be right on the technical but on point two I couldn't disagree more. As I said above, there are lot of disappointed people in Los Angeles who wanted to make this their one man band camera. There are only so many film crews in the world who need such a specialized function as a disabled IBIS for vehicle shots. Let's be generous and say there are a thousand at any one time. Compare that to the tens of thousands of professionals and enthusiasts--the true bread and butter of the gh5 and gh5s--who now have to choose between moving the camera on a gimbal with fixed, vaguely soft, deep focus--for that oh-so-wonderful small-sensor smartphone look--- or take the camera off the gimbal and try to manually focus while handholding it--all without the incredible dual stabilization solution on the gh5--so unusable bumpy shots. Again, if they had to take out the IBIS to please a few dozen--or hundred Top Gear-style crews, in many ways they should have done it for the gh5. Big crews, Grand Tour-sized productions can afford big lighting rigs--and all the extra time it takes to set them up. But low light cameras are best suited to those who with smaller budgets, who don't have the time, crew, or equipment, to light something to death. Those are the exact same people who can't afford a dedicated remote focus puller and the equipment that goes with it. These are relatively low budget cameras in the scheme of things, remember. If someone can afford giant lights and a big crew and the permits that go with it, and a focus puller and a 1500 dollar steadicam, they can also afford a Canon c200 or higher. In short, I don't know how anyone can make a reasonable argument that Panasonic crippled their most videocentric camera to please a few hundred people (at most), at the expense of (tens of?) thousands of small-crew/one-man-band shooters. So having said all that, the economics of the whole thing is just insane, so I go back to my original theory that they couldn't handle the overheating (or something similar)--and they just trotted poor Nathan Thurm (ruclips.net/video/98MNisZJyFI/видео.html ) up there in the video, to put out a face-saving cover story, which they always make that poor guy do.
You havent understood this at all. This camera hasnt been made for the people you describe. The CEO of Panasonic specifically said they made it for high end sports and nature photographers because these people asked for it. It wasnt made to please the general photographer with high sales to make a profit, it was made to please their elite sports ambassadors. He was explicit, he said if people ask for something we look at it and if we can we make it. It hasnt cost them much has it, its just a GH5 with a different sensor. This camera was precisely defined to be how it is with NO IBIS. If they added IBIS it would be useless for these protogs. It still has IS in the lens so its no different no most of their models. Panasonic is trying to aim this at the same market as the Leica SL, extreme video makers with an unlimited budget; its a prestige product, a loss leader, a flagship. Something they can point at and say the major networks are using our gear. The GH5 proved to be useless hanging out the back of a jeep in low light trying to follow cross country sport, the IBIS was providing resonant vibrations that made the footage useless and you cant light a mountain no matter how rich you are. That is the function of this camera. No point complaining because it doesnt meet your needs; I am furious because i wanted an upgrade to the GX8 but all i got was teh G9 and GH5s - sigh
PS this camera will have the least problems with overheating of any of their models because of the low pixel density and the fact that the sensor is stuck directly onto the heatsink instead of waving about in the air. Its high density sensors like Sony's 40MP sensor that suffers from heat problems, the chip has to deal with massive electrical loads.
NO IBIS! Seriously? one step forward 2 backwords ? No IBIS means event shooters need to put the GH5s on a gimble/stabilizer. But since Gh5s AF system is not perfect, you will need to manual focus on a gimble, and that's an issue.
Elliot La-Mer totally agree with you. No IBIS on GH5s is an absolute oversight, probably one of the most important selling points of the predecessor GH5, despite Panasonics efforts on sugar coating this disappointment. Personally I believe that Panasonic just made a mistake and opened a flank for future Sony ASIII that's is gonna be all over this. Also, since Panasonics is sacrificing IBIS and resolution on GH5s for the low light sensitivity, the GH5s higher market pricing is leaving people scratching the back of their heads, kind of a paradox or at most needs to be better explained, before rumors of overpriced GH5s (when compared to the predecessor GH5) circulating every where.
Almost three years later, this video camera is still holding the crown. And people are still complaining on lack of stabilisation. Out of their will to find why there is no ibis. I just hope gh6s or gh6v won't come with ibis also.
Despite my issues, thanks for another great talk, though. It's a great improvement in low-light, which is very impressive, and TC is appreciated. The GH5S has it's place, for sure. Return the IBIS, replace the shutter with NDs, and you'll have a legend on your hands, Panasonic. You're that close.
Thanks for this Hugh, I love Sean he always makes me WANT the latest Panasonic gear just cuz he's so enthusiastic about it haha. And I love how Panasonic (without calling em out) literally targets the competition and tries to squelch the naysayers and those who might think Panasonic incapable of competing. Idk, how I feel about this camera... I do own the GH5, the A6500... and was considering swapping out one or the other... this is one possible model I want to entertain once I get hands on....I will say that the GH5S (seans cameras) the AF was literally spot on... like... literally...
Hello From Germany, most of the time I work alone. So I have the GH5s on a tripod and the GH5 handheld. This way I get vivid shots from the GH5 and beautiful b-roll with the GH5s. Perfect combination for a one man band:-)
I've only owned the GH5s for a couple weeks but it has blown my mind. You can seriously film at 6400iso and its clean no joke. Also I do not like ibis. I want complete control over what my sensor is doing so this camera was a perfect fit. Also, do yourself a favor and buy the Zacuto cage. it's expensive but it wont break like other cheap cages I've had. Also, it supports a metabones adapter mount that bolts in tot he cage which makes 5 points of connection from camera to cage.
Now... let's start working on a GH6s which will have the IBIS back in and a killer continuous AF Please (Better tracking Face recognition!!!) BTW, those crazy cinematographers who need a shock proof sensor for their crash cams can use the GH5s! But that IBIS Is a must for a camera this size as most people are now handholding their B-Rolls with the GH5! A GH6s as I described it (IBIS and better AF) would be a dream camera!!
So it's time to bust the "GH5-S is a super low light beast" myth..... For the past few days I have been looking at all this GH5-S footage and thinking "damn,...I feel like I'm seeing a TON of noise reduction on this GH5-S" This was especially true when watch people compare the GH5-S to the A7S-II, a sensor with pixel wells (photosites) that are TWICE the size (8+ microns) of the GH5-S So DPReview has added the GH5-S to it's test database and you can now compare the two sensors for yourself. Make sure you adjust both cameras for RAW sensor data readout. This will strip away the in camera noise reduction so you can REALLY see what is going on under the hood of both cameras. We can all see now that the A7S-II smokes the GH5-S at every ISO/gain amount. Even at 20 ISO. This tells us there is a HUGE amount of noise reduction going on in the GH5-S and it does suffer form a softer image over the A7S-II because the noise reduction is scrubbing so much noise out. Make no mistake. The GH5-S is VERY respectable and very commendable. It DOES go toe to toe with the A6500 very well but no,...it does not "truely" touch the A7S-II. That was a very unrealistic dream we all had for a couple of days. www.dpreview.com/news/233357...o-scene-posted CT
Cliff, nice to see you here again. You may be right (you're certainly right about the laws of physics and how the two cameras compare in stills). BUT: the differences between stills performance (as in DPReview's scene comparison) and video performance (as in DPReview's video comparison) are significant in a number of ways. Other than what I saw at the press pre-briefing in December, I've not had the GH5S in hand, but what I saw with my own eyes was that the GH5S had superior footage at 6400 and 12800 both in terms of noise and color. DPReview and Imaging Resource - who HAVE had the camera all this time -- are seeing the same kind of thing I did, now with their own footage and are saying so. You know I have no axe to grind, as I own both brands, use both brands, and really like both companies. The bigger picture for me, is this: just think about what was the gold standard less than a decade ago and still in use today -- the full frame, Canon 5D II in 1080p -- and see what a micro four thirds camera is doing now (again, in video). The biggest issue for many users, I suspect, is the absence of IBIS as the price gap narrows. The choice is now: GH5S without IBIS at $2,500; a7s II at $2,500, a7r III at $3200, or someday soon, an a7s III at I'm guessing $3,200, all with IBIS. Then again, the IBIS in the Sonys is NOT a substitute for gimbal work, while the IBIS in the G9, I assert, comes darned close. Can't wait to go extended hands on -- and I will, soon. :)
I agree completely with you on this. Noise reduction and amazing processing is something that needs to counted in anybody's review of this camera. Raw video is not something anybody can take form this camera, so the very cleverly processed final image is what you are going be recording. I'm merely using the DPReview's analytics tool to understand "why" a sensor like this can seem to perform so well. The raw sensor data output is "ok" but the processed and noise reduced image is quite amazing. And,...in the end, that's all we care about. The quantum efficiency (conversion of photons into electricity) of image sensors is not really improving anymore from any company but image processing IS improving by leaps and bounds. This GH5-S is quite an accomplishment, no doubt. Use this analytic tool some more and test you favorite camera with it. I think it's facinating to inspect that raw image vs the processed image of any camera. www.dpreview.com/reviews/image-comparison/fullscreen?attr18=daylight&attr13_0=panasonic_dcgh5&attr13_1=panasonic_dcgh5s&attr13_2=sony_a6500&attr13_3=sony_a7sii&attr15_0=raw&attr15_1=raw&attr15_2=raw&attr15_3=raw&attr16_0=400&attr16_1=400&attr16_2=400&attr16_3=400&normalization=compare&widget=1&x=0.2289482981980921&y=0.9558696988322066
While I understand the G9 hasn’t been released, since you suggested the G9 vs GH5 can you explain more clearly why it might be better for me? Also in the Sony ecosystem which camera should I look at?
Elliot Resnick My review of the G9 is coming shortly! In the SONY world, the a7R III is now THE most interesting and capable across-the-board hybrid. Check out my review of it.
This interview was very interesting and had a nice spirit to it. Good mix of humor, tech and DP. Now for me to ponder it I get a second GH5 or an GH5S for upcoming Multicam shoots ^_^
Thanks so much, excellent video. While X-T2 and Fuji's Ecosystem is ideal for stills, I'm seeking a second camera body that's great for videos...thus GH5 or possibly G9 or something in Sony's line. Any suggestions??
Elliot Resnick Since you already appreciate the capabilities of crop sensor systems and the beautiful small glass available for some of them - and obviously value ergos and ease of use, I’d direct you to the Pannys - EXCEPT if excellent continuous AF is a must. They just aren’t as good as Sony. If you don’t need this; don’t need more than 30 minutes of continuous recording nor 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording (which the Sony’s don’t’ offer in any case); and don’t care about 24 vs 30fps I’d go G9 over the GH5 for its superior IBIS and lower price. G9 review coming shortly.
Panasonic have done a good job if the goal is slightly cleaner footage than the GH5 (1.5 stops) at the expense of 1. IBIS (which I'm not entirely convinced about the argument around vibrations. I think it's more likely that they wanted the extra processing power) *and* 2. footage detail (losing downsampling). Those are reasonable compromises for the product they created. BUT the a7s ii is still the gold standard for low light performance. There are just things that come from having a huge sensor that the m4/3 sensor can't match. Footage from the a7s ii is unbelievably clean from 6400 right up to 25k. And I mean clean. This is not the case with the GH5s. It is nowhere near dethroning the a7s ii. I think that's a stretch. I owned that camera and sold it, but the footage that you can get up to ISO 40k is stunning. And *still* unmatched. I think the a7s ii, GH5s and GH5 are in different categories. And people will gravitate to each for different reasons. But losing IBIS is a step backwards for I'm going to say at least 65-70% of shooters. Nice interview.
Great job! Quality of video speaks for the cameras. Though not a Panasonic native lense the Olympus 75mm 1.8 worked beautifully with the G9. Is that always the case?
With video, form factor and budget in mind [and based on specs since you haven’t reviewed the G9] does it makes sense comparing Panny G9 and Sony a6500?
Sure. In fact, testing the a6300/a6500 AF vs. the G9 is on my list because Panasonic has made some big claims for the G9's AF. I own and use an a6300 -- and GH5. I think the G9 is superior to the a6500 in important ways (ergos, menus, touch interface EVF, IBIS, rear LCD, battery life, headphone jack, selection of crop-sensor coverage lenses); close or inferior in some important ways (AF and high ISO noise). Both are video-limited to 30 minutes, both record 8-bit 4:2:0. In the end, both are excellent cameras, but the G9 feels more complete to me. I'd be happy to own either one.
I am so appreciative of all the work you do to help inform the community. Thank you so much. I am a loyal fan of your efforts and work. I have a very strange random question. I just got my MacBook Pro back from having a new monitor installed and a new logic board. (thank god for apple care) As I am watching your video at 13:00 min in I am hearing something strange and I am not sure if it is my computer or how it was filmed but anyway I am hearing a really nice separation and sound image when each of your talk and it is really cool - the only issue is it is on the wrong side meaning it seems like it is flip-flopped when the Panasonic guy talks I hear it on my right speaker and when you talk I hear it on my left speaker rather than the other way around. Was this something in the filming you did with your sound or is this some strange thing that is now happening on my computer now that I just got it back from repairs. If this comment is just too weird deal with just delete it as I understand it is important to keep my comments to be relevant to the subject. Best to you and the your hard work!
I knew it!!! Good Job! While exploring the internet the last couple of hours, not many are so thrilled about this camera it seems IBIS taken out seems to be the main reason, which I knew would happen if they chose the new Dual ISO sensor. I was hoping it would have been slightly better, go figure, Only so Sony could step up on the A7sIII, but seems they will have more time to milk the A7sII. I would say the S stands for 1(S)top maybe 2 of light. I kind of feel like they should have worked on the AF, but hey cannot have it all. Quite a nice camera anyhow. My hopes will continue and I have to wait to see 60p 4k on a Sony mirrorless before I make any new decisions.
Eric Knorpp At the press briefing it looked like two stops to me with ich better color and dynamic range, but as I said - will have to wait until I can spend time with it and shoot my own footage.
I do like the idea behind this camera and from the footage I have seen so far.. the image looks really good, not only in lowlight. You did get a lot of heat though for not including ibis and not significantly improving af. I think the least you could do is to implement some kind of follow focus support with electronic lenses on gimbals like the crane 2 and the new ronin s. When are we going to see that? Canon can do it and they dont even need it because their af is already killer...
Thank you for a really great interview, I'm still going to keep saving for the GH5 so I have flexibility with 20mp stills and video. You spoke a little about it in the video, but is there a micro jitter problem? is it some lenses? I can live with not good low light and auto focus as I'll be moving up from my Panasonic TZ110, but this would worry me especially if I invested in a gimbal later, any advice much appreciated, I wish they had put 120FPS in the G9
Chris Meuzelaar Thanks, but: you don’t like 180? Stay tuned. On micro flutter - it’s about AF system and the specifics of the scene composition AND individual lens.
I was only estimating; a6500 has a bundle with a zoom lens for $1500 and the G9 with 12-60mm zoom is $2700. Considering that I want to use this camera for video, a versatile lightweight zoom lenses is a given. Suggestions?
I see where you're going... G9 is $1699 and a6500 is $1400, then I'm assuming the 24-105 is at least $1000. Therefore, G9 plus their 12-60 zoom lens at $1000 is approx same price as a6500 plus 24-105 lens... Alternatively, Sony's kit lens which is the 16-50 f/3.5-5.6 OSS is only $100. The devil's always in the details!!
the dilemma is that my great lightweight still camera is years behind Sony, Canon, Panasonic in video; so the way I see it, I can just do nothing and use my iPhone for video or a pocketable RX100v5 , or move into a new ecosystem when the G9 is released and liquidate my kit and pick up that 24-105/4 and an equally brilliant prime lens for stills and video...
So "Native" and "Base" are two different things for two different worlds. With the GH5S, the "base" ISO you can shoot at in stills is 160, where in video recording, the best SNR & Dynamic range is at 400 & 2500 (or 800 & 5000 in LOG / HLG)
@Sean Robinson, I got my GH5s yesterday and I am seeing the best SNR at ISO 3200 for HLG in High mode. ISO 400 is what I got for low mode. Is it possible that HLG's base is different from Vlog-L's base?
Zlatan Pasic I thought it worked well, but I first noticed occasional wobble in the blinds which corresponded to subtle changes in focus on Sean’s face. You?
I really enjoy your videos and presentation, Can you please get more info on the timecode improvements. for me this was and is the worst part of going from gh4 to gh5 Thanks
Solved one minor issue (low light), created one new one (no ibis), and didn't address the biggest issue (AF)... gonna hug my gh5 until the gh6 comes out.
Wish I had this last month. GH5 was backing up my Nikon D810 (shooting stills at a dimly-lit event). The GH5 files are almost embarrassingly unusable. Maybe I'm just used to Nikon low-light shooting, but did not expect the Panasonic to be so bad. Thankfully it wasn't a paid event, but I still makes me feel badly because it was an event for 3/11 survivors. Note: I haven't taken the RAW files and tried to see if they're able to be saved yet.
so my limited understanding is that there's no ibis because even if turned off the magnets used to keep it place could shift during camera movement while on a gimbal, causing a wobble. my question then is, why not incorporate latches or something to hold the sensor firmly in place when ibis is turned off?
Bryan Pope more to break internally, and limited if any way to hold it precisely in place. Tech just isn't there yet to hold a floating sensor with a mechanical lock to the levels that would be acceptable from both the customer side, and the brand side. On to of all that, the sensor is too big given the image circle projected by thr lenses. A multi aspect sensor utilizes the full image circle making it impossible to use sensor stabilization.
WestCoastDP I kept looking at this as we set up, kept bringing it down... and then when I looked at it on different devices I saw different things (blown out on one, pretty darned good on another...). Demonstrates once again how much I have to learn.
If there is an occasional problem with a feature, the correct approach is to temporarily turn it off, not to remove the feature entirely. I smell corporate spin.
Maybe because they got the channels wrong. The person visually on the left is heard from the right and vice versa. Probably a mistake in editing. Does give it a weird feeling.
PS. Casey's IG picture blew the surprise by the way!! Maybe that is why he jumped to Canon soon after, Maybe they got pissed off he posted that picture.
Thanks for the video, but the audio was very distracting through headphones. Not only was the pan reversed, it made no sense on the one-shots. Also, the title borders on clickbait. I came here to see a comparison of the GH5s and the A7S II.
The first day I got the gh5 I could not believe how nobody talked about the sensor rattle on that camera it rattles all the time and it renders a lot of my shots on usable because of the sound that it makes more so than the vibration. So basically now I have to buy a secondary camera to eliminate the sensor rattle it's just stupid.
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions I even rented another one to see if it has same issue and it did. Not a good choice for car or motion related shooting.
@@larbueno Its not the lens is the sensor design. You can make it rattle without the lens. And if add a multi element lens its obviously worse with multiple vibration sources.
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions Can I please ask you a question. I watched your video on lens for the GH5. Your video series were in part why I decided to buy a GH5. I also bought the panasonic 12-35mm lens to get started. I am still very much learning videography, shoot a lot in doors in a dark room "bat cave" often but also normal indoor light a lot. The Nocticron seems like the best overall lens but is pricey for an amateur. You do seem to suggest if you had to use only 1 lens it would be that one. however you in this video make an olympus lens look incredible and also a sigma lens look incredible in other videos. That makes things a little confusing when trying to pick a fast lens for low light for the GH5 for an amateur who wants high quality for his video content for his you tube channel. The camera wont be used on tripod all the time sometimes hand held so it makes one lean towards IS lens. Whats your advice for this situation thanks
Pursuit Perfect System First lens I bought for the GH5 was the Sigma 30/1.4; next was Leica 15/1.7; most recent was Oly 75/1.8. All are stellar lenses, stellar values - and tiny. If I had to do it all over again, I’d do the exact same thing, except 1) I might opt for the Leica 25/1.4 since it in theory works better with Panasonic’s DFD autofocus. The Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 1.8s are the only alternatives I’ve ever considered other than the Nocticron - they are brilliant, fast lenses as well - but they are big (and require an adapter and/or a SpeedBooster). Let me know what you decide!
Thanks for the reply, appreciate it - can I ask what made you purchase those lens - is it to cover all different ranges and scenarios while being light and small? I appreciate the fast response
Just saw a comparison of GH5S and Sony A7S2 on DPR. Both stills and video do NOT look better on the GH5S. And the GH5S actually lacks IBIS that the regular GH5 has. I would wait for the Sony A7S3 and see what Sony comes up with next.
AT 2300, he says the community is getting smaller and harder to work in. Why is this? With more and more higher-end equipement like this, one might think there's more opportunity to be made by someone ambitious, and we keep hearing over and over that the massive number of new channels everywhere is screaming for good content--good in both story and quality of production. Is not the aim of this new toy to allow a higher quality of production at a lower entry level, by combining this new machine with an EVA1 system, and networking them all together, basically as the blackmagic system is doing with the Ursa Mini Pro setup? Are they not trying to build a better version of that with this and the EVA1?
Three blind men and an elephant Thanks for the great interview but why did you not ask him what is the dynamic range or if there is any improvement in it? That is the most important question. It's like Panasonic doesn't even want us to know.
Marc, I guess the reason why is that I'd just seen an hour earlier footage with my own eyes -- I'm SO sorry I can't show you my own footage yet -- that blew me away compared even to the a7S II both from the perspective of dynamic range and color. Frankly, I just want to get my hands on the camera for an extended review, but that's coming up soon.
The fact that the Sony a7sII cannot shoot 10-bit 4K footage makes the choice obvious. If you're a still photographer, go with the Sony. But, if you want to make films that include color grading and possible visual effects, then you would OBVIOUSLY go with the GH5. I've seen way too many 8-bit films where the color grading process is limited by the artifacting and banding that comes with 8-bit footage. I have no plans for shooting sports stills or little birdies in the trees. I plan on making films. Adios, Sony.
Gh5s is cool. But it cost as much as the Sony a7sii. Actually 100usd more in some cases. No ibis and a lower megapixel count. Sourt of takes away the flexibility from shooting 4k. So maybe it has neewer specs on the sheets. But it seems like it comes at a sacrifice. I think gh5s fell short to as far as to say they came after Sony a7 line. And I'm a micro 4/3rd guy at heart. My daily shooters are the Z camera (4 stills) And the osmo pro x5raw (4 video). But when I travel I only take the Sony a7sii with me. I say that so that no one thinks I'm bashing panasonic and micro 4/3rd cameras. Because I live micro 4/3rd. But they fell short.
Yes please. U got a new subscriber in me. So I hope u publish that video soon. As well as the side by side. If u find it easier to do a side by side video, I think maybe do that first since momentum is on it side with the gh5s. 💪
GH5 4k video looks rather poor compared to Canon 1080p (to my eyes, don't bite my head off). I have a feeling Panasonic went back to the drawing board on GH5S' video to make it actually look "good" and found out that in order to get the best image quality from the sensor you have to ditch some stuff that "best buy camera shoppers" have been conditioned to think is important by Sony 😏. Specs on paper can't hold a candle to image on screen. Huge risk because in 2018 hardly anyone buys anything using their eyes and use camera purchases more as "bigger and better" spec flex purchases to impress other people like it's the newest iPhone.
Fly Guy I wasn’t going to bite your head off. :) My eyes see something different, but reasonable people can disagree. I agree with you, however, about how expectations can be shaped irrespective of actual utility or much forethought about what one truly needs. Thanks for weighing in.
I've been shooting on a canon 5d3 for about 4 years and the 1080 video is not that good. The colors are good, but the overall quality was not. The gh4 and gh5 both looked SOO Much better.
This guy was right - ruclips.net/video/hrMvoMJokrU/видео.html Panasonic just lost me as a customer, this fragmentation of products, to protect their flow of cash, but not giving professionals what they need to make a living.. This ugly marketing politics of taking out the IBIS to protect the GH5 is a bad sign. If you invest in a full eco system (Lenses and all), you want to rest assured that the company behind it is loyal. I don't think Panasonic is. I'm about to spend 6K later this month to upgrade my system . this 6k is NOT going to Panasonic.
Unnecessary split audio...and you have it panned backwards! Given the rest of your production quality this is clearly an intentional choice and just a painful insult.
If you get your hands on a gh5s again can you please put these autofocus settings into it to see if it works as good. The settings are in the description Thanks.ruclips.net/video/h0vLMF3XQhY/видео.html
What the heck is that annoying intermittent bleep all the way through this, it was driving me mad! Three times I paused and went into the kitchen to see if I'd left something on, or if there's a low battery device . . . or something. Then I realized it's this upload. If you want a reference to the bleeping $%*~ bleep that I allude to, here's one at random. @10:57 just after he says "dual native ISO...um" [BLEEP]. Once you've heard it, you can't then not hear it. I'm not sure I can make it through the whole chat. Which without the %£$&**" bleep would have been lovely. I'm not so keen on slitting my wrists,so I'll stop here. Maybe let me know when it's been reuploaded with Seth MacFarlane's ADR track.
Avidcomp Hah! I believe it is a low battery warning or test somewhere at the center. Used RX6 to dramatically improve ambients, but I didn’t happen to sample that beep.
No IBIS in GH5S? Idiots... They've ruined it, cause IBIS is the best selling point in the GH5 target Market, that is the indie low budget filmmaker and or run and gun videographer. Upper market pros don't give a shit about GH5s, they use ARRI's and RED's on SHOT OVER massive gimbal cranes and SACHTLER ARTEMIS STEADYCAMs. Bye Panasonics GH5s, Helo Sony A7SIII.
Thank you.
Enjoy!
Sean is SOOOOO dedicated to his craft. He has tattoos of lenses on his arms. So cool how much he cares about these cameras and lenses.
Well done guys... I just got a GH5S and starting to work with it. Loving the freedom of working with non-primes like the 7-14 f/4 in low light as well.
Definitely enjoying the Leica 8-18 as well.
Thanks. I absolutely accept the rationale too.
This is the main reason why purchased a GH5S, LOCKED DOW SENSOR, LOW LIGHT PERFORMANCE, 4K, and more
The stereo pan seems reversed. Had to double check my headphones...
It is, and panning in this type of broadcast is unnecessary and distracting.
Theres also an annoying beeping, been running round my house trying to find it!
LOL. Gotta love it. I was watching a movie the other day and I thought my phone was going off.
Two Bit da Vinci No worries - didn’t mean to imply you’re bashing m43, and in fact we keep an a6300 in our kit. Your channel looks great, BTW!
cool video but audio channels reverserd :/
D I did that.
Great as always! Interesting to hear the reasons for the choices beeing made in development.
Panasonic is really pushing it now.
Nice to hear what Panasonic say about this release given all we had was rumours to this point. Thanks Hugh 😊
Just like with the G9, this is the best GH5S vid. Thanks for doing this.
Best answer. But I’m sure the Panasonic supporters don’t want to hear it. Sad!
You're that close.
genjii931 replacing shutter with ND sounds like an excellent idea :)
genjii931 If only!
Sully Cortez hi, Sully! AF definitely getting better...stay tuned...
since you have both camers, what do you think its recommended to wedding videography , a6500 , gh5 or a gh5s ( even tho its kinda overpriced )
?
Hello From Germany, most of the time I work alone. So I have the GH5s on a tripod and the GH5 handheld. This way I get vivid shots from the GH5 and beautiful b-roll with the GH5s. Perfect combination for a one man band:-)
Triple-K-Studio Niiice!
This is SO helpful. What a great convo to track if the GH5s is for me!
Timothy Gordon So glad you found it helpful!
Oh wow I have been waiting for this! Thanks
CopterDeal - קופטרדיל רחפנים You’re welcome!
Sean is NUTS and I think that is really cool.
Thank you! Looks great, and finds it's home for many video shooters. It's filling the devoid in m4/3 at the very least.
Ville Mononen Thanks for watching!
Peter Jackson excited for you!
Now... let's start working on a GH6s which will have the IBIS back in and a killer continuous AF Please (Better tracking Face recognition!!!) BTW, those crazy cinematographers who need a shock proof sensor for their crash cams can use the GH5s! But that IBIS Is a must for a camera this size as most people are now handholding their B-Rolls with the GH5! A GH6s as I described it (IBIS and better AF) would be a dream camera!!
thoughtful, interesting, informative and fun. i am thrilled the envelope keeps getting pushed forward. BIG thumbs up!
Very interesting info about omitting IBIS. Thanks!
You're welcome!
So it's time to bust the "GH5-S is a super low light beast" myth.....
For the past few days I have been looking at all this GH5-S footage and thinking "damn,...I feel like I'm seeing a TON of noise reduction on this GH5-S" This was especially true when watch people compare the GH5-S to the A7S-II, a sensor with pixel wells (photosites) that are TWICE the size (8+ microns) of the GH5-S
So DPReview has added the GH5-S to it's test database and you can now compare the two sensors for yourself.

ISO switching is pretty simple, it's like changing a gear on your bicycle because you are going up hill.
So you turned the sensor read out into a guitar pedal (cap switching), clever yet simple. I hope this is in the up coming GX9 ?
While I understand the G9 hasn’t been released, since you suggested the G9 vs GH5 can you explain more clearly why it might be better for me? Also in the Sony ecosystem which camera should I look at?
Elliot Resnick My review of the G9 is coming shortly! In the SONY world, the a7R III is now THE most interesting and capable across-the-board hybrid. Check out my review of it.
This interview was very interesting and had a nice spirit to it. Good mix of humor, tech and DP. Now for me to ponder it I get a second GH5 or an GH5S for upcoming Multicam shoots ^_^
randomgeocacher As are we!
Hope the new gx9 will have good low light shooting.
Also a weather sealed 25mm manual focus prime.
Great job! Quality of video speaks for the cameras. Though not a Panasonic native lense the Olympus 75mm 1.8 worked beautifully with the G9. Is that always the case?
ShiHong 石宏 That Oly 75 is magnificent - and to me the AF looked dead on (though I didn’t really move around that much). Much more testing to do.
No IBIS... No GH5S For ME. Panasonic please don't mess up on the GH6, i don't care what argument u have against IBIS, i want it... i want it bad
John McCabe Hah! The good news is it’s not your computer; the bad news is that it’s me. Just another life lesson - which I love. :)
Sorry, missed that in the specs, I see now the G9 does 180FPS, my bad :)
I was only estimating; a6500 has a bundle with a zoom lens for $1500 and the G9 with 12-60mm zoom is $2700. Considering that I want to use this camera for video, a versatile lightweight zoom lenses is a given. Suggestions?
Elliot Resnick Which Sony zoom? What sharpness do you require? The comparable Sony zoom to the Leica 12-60/2.8-4 is the 24-105/4 - a brilliant lens.
Elliot Resnick Right! 16-50 useless for real work; 24-105/4 brilliant, $1200.
the dilemma is that my great lightweight still camera is years behind Sony, Canon, Panasonic in video; so the way I see it, I can just do nothing and use my iPhone for video or a pocketable RX100v5 , or move into a new ecosystem when the G9 is released and liquidate my kit and pick up that 24-105/4 and an equally brilliant prime lens for stills and video...
I believe the audio channels were the other way around (I had to invert my headset). Nice channel!!!
Matheus Aguiar Sigh. Yep. So now O have really good headphones to make sure this never happens again. :)
@Sean Robinson what is the native ISO for RAW stills? Is it 400 with the GH5s?
So "Native" and "Base" are two different things for two different worlds. With the GH5S, the "base" ISO you can shoot at in stills is 160, where in video recording, the best SNR & Dynamic range is at 400 & 2500 (or 800 & 5000 in LOG / HLG)
@Sean Robinson, I got my GH5s yesterday and I am seeing the best SNR at ISO 3200 for HLG in High mode. ISO 400 is what I got for low mode. Is it possible that HLG's base is different from Vlog-L's base?
Great and detailed as usual, thanks. By the way, the autofocus on the GH5 with the Nocticron...did anyone else notice?
Zlatan Pasic I thought it worked well, but I first noticed occasional wobble in the blinds which corresponded to subtle changes in focus on Sean’s face. You?
The audio is on the wrong sides
Maybe i got confused lol did the gentleman from Panasonic really try and make it seem like having IBS is worse than having no IBS? stop it! lol
It is for some things actually. Like when you mount the camera on something. Really big difference. For handheld IBIS is better for sure :)
Disappointed about the release of this new GH5s
I'm going to wait for GH6
Interesting interview! At least I now have a bit of an understanding, why they ditched the IBIS. Still sad … ;)
Very informative. Thank you!
html5guys So happy you found it useful!
I really enjoy your videos and presentation, Can you please get more info on the timecode improvements. for me this was and is the worst part of going from gh4 to gh5
Thanks
BRENT KAPLAN As soon as I can!
Great interview Hugh!! Interesting to see what Sony answers with. But PLEEZE get that G9 review out!
Anthony Pierre Working on it!
FriedToast What ISO were you using? What exposure? What size prints did you make? GH5S, we now know, is only 10mp...
so my limited understanding is that there's no ibis because even if turned off the magnets used to keep it place could shift during camera movement while on a gimbal, causing a wobble. my question then is, why not incorporate latches or something to hold the sensor firmly in place when ibis is turned off?
Bryan Pope more to break internally, and limited if any way to hold it precisely in place. Tech just isn't there yet to hold a floating sensor with a mechanical lock to the levels that would be acceptable from both the customer side, and the brand side. On to of all that, the sensor is too big given the image circle projected by thr lenses. A multi aspect sensor utilizes the full image circle making it impossible to use sensor stabilization.
Next time, try to scrim down the hot light on the right head. Skin tones are blowing out. Maybe you need a better monitor.
WestCoastDP I kept looking at this as we set up, kept bringing it down... and then when I looked at it on different devices I saw different things (blown out on one, pretty darned good on another...). Demonstrates once again how much I have to learn.
You're getting better. You have a good voice that sounds good on RUclips
What color profiles were used in each camera?
mpgxsvcd None. Bog-standard.
Great, great video.
Dragan Bakema Glad you like it!
No 48 FPS with Audio?
This guys dedication to the cause shows up in his tattoos :D
Sean's a great guy.
If there is an occasional problem with a feature, the correct approach is to temporarily turn it off, not to remove the feature entirely. I smell corporate spin.
Ha, love the reaction to the 240fps!
I can't hear this splitted voice channel, it's boring :(
Make me nervous and i had to stop the video.
Really now. Well your grammar made me nervous.
Eric Knorpp what's wrong with my grammar?
Maybe because they got the channels wrong. The person visually on the left is heard from the right and vice versa. Probably a mistake in editing. Does give it a weird feeling.
Yeeeeessssss buuuuh
just turn your headphones around or change settings..it's worth it
now that he explained how to make it im just going to go make one myself!
Full frame gh5s is perfect camera for me
Get the XL speedbooster and you pretty much have a full frame GH5s
Sorry to hear. Haven’t had that experience myself.
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions I even rented another one to see if it has same issue and it did. Not a good choice for car or motion related shooting.
savagegeese What did Panasonic have to say?
Did you use a manual lens and fail to set the mm correctly?
@@larbueno Its not the lens is the sensor design. You can make it rattle without the lens. And if add a multi element lens its obviously worse with multiple vibration sources.
Dynamic range improvement for the gh5s vs gh5?
pete49327 At higher ISOs, I saw dramatic improvement in color - but we’ll see what happens when I get my hands on one for an extended test.
Great info! I've liked, despite the absence of squirrels, cats, or other lovely creatures.
Ah, but check out my Twitter account today - @hughbrownstone. :)
A very lovely dog with perhaps the wrongest name possible, if only in the context of your tweets. ;-)
Great video thanks very much
Pursuit Perfect System My pleasure!
Pursuit Perfect System precisely. Any wider and I’m loving the Panny 8-18; any longer... well, depends on the application.
SO SAD NO IBIS !
Great talk !
Man.... I would upgrade from my GH4 if only the GH5S had the in-body stabilisation that the GH5 has.
Flornmonk upgrade to the gh5 then
Great info! And not sure if you noticed but you're audio is flipped on opposite sides.
Nick Long Sigh. Yes.
My OCD is kicking in really bad!!
蔡依林 looking forward to an a7S III!
Your opposite panning of the voices is messing with my OCD. Center pan dialog please.
Why not make it the GH5s into a bridge camera?
Three blind men and an elephant Thanks for the great interview but why did you not ask him what is the dynamic range or if there is any improvement in it? That is the most important question. It's like Panasonic doesn't even want us to know.
Marc, I guess the reason why is that I'd just seen an hour earlier footage with my own eyes -- I'm SO sorry I can't show you my own footage yet -- that blew me away compared even to the a7S II both from the perspective of dynamic range and color. Frankly, I just want to get my hands on the camera for an extended review, but that's coming up soon.
It's the same Dynamic Range, I.E. maxes out at 12 stops in Vlog Mode
I guess the question will be if the G9 with a zoom lens is worth twice the money as an a6500 with a zoom lens!!
Which lenses?
But have they fixed the auto focus?
Kevin Swan Will let you know when I go extended hands on. I CAN tell you G9 AF definitely better - stay tuned.
Now I know what Kevin Love does in the offseason...
But the camera with the best EVF and IBIS is on the cheaper G9! lol
Amazing camera,,,,sans IBIS,,,np,,,Low light wizardry,,,good deal.
Rubin lopez Looking forward to getting them side by side myself - but first I have to get out my G9 review...
Yes please. U got a new subscriber in me. So I hope u publish that video soon. As well as the side by side. If u find it easier to do a side by side video, I think maybe do that first since momentum is on it side with the gh5s. 💪
On it! :)
Cant await the real life tests, converted to fullframe this is a 40Mp sensor, so I wonder where all this low light goodness comes from.
Can't wait to show you!
This guy was right - ruclips.net/video/hrMvoMJokrU/видео.html
Panasonic just lost me as a customer, this fragmentation of products, to protect their flow of cash, but not giving professionals what they need to make a living..
Do you guys care about audio it seems the guy on the left his audio sounds funny
Wow ... why do people see it necessary to shoot a photo camera with a beep sound during a video interview. It's annoying even if it's not my set!!!
Erwin Gmail It wasn’t any of the cameras - it was something in the room.
GH5s vs A7S2 tests are online. A7s2 is still the king. here is a thumbnail: ibb.co/hpKZmm
Autofocus in video still bad :((((
Thats my face 😂🤣😂 when Panasonic says improving autofocus😭😭 I believe it will be the same sucks😪😪😪 autofocus as the gh5😔😔😖😖.
Unnecessary split audio...and you have it panned backwards! Given the rest of your production quality this is clearly an intentional choice and just a painful insult.
Not a choice. A dumb mistake, missed in the heat of getting it out as the embargo expired.
Oh this lighting is terrible
DMH PHOTOGRAPHY Other than that I should have raised the top barn door on myself and that I also left it too hot, what don’t you like?
