My Lumix GH5S review: www.cameralabs...
Those multi-aspect diagrams and the technical details of the Dual Native ISOs really raised this preview video above the others out there. Love your work Gordon.
Camera-wise, I do really enjoy my current GH5 and would very much appreciate cleaner high ISO V-log footage out of the GH5s but as a travel film-maker I probably can't do without the IBIS unfortunately.
No one does explanations like this Gordon - Great stuff!
Thanks! There's a couple of potentially confusing concepts in there, so hope I got it across ok!
Of all the G5HS previews/reviews that popped up in my subscription stream recently, it was this one that I chose to watch first ... of course! Highly informative, and I don't even shoot video!
Why thankyou Sir!
love the breakdown!
Thanks! Hope there weren't too many diagrams, but I felt it was necessary!
Great video... I learned a lot and you absolutely crushed it with the comparison charts! I subbed..
thanks! They took a while to make, but they were worth it if you subbed!
Huh, this camera comes as a complete surprise. I didn't expect a new video centric Lumix till 2019-20
It was a surprise to me too, but makes sense when you let it sink in. Looks like an interesting product...
It certainly does, but is the development of this model justified? Did the GH5 lack so much in the video department that Pana had to reinvent it and split the GH5S off its big brother? GH5 owners can't be happy with this, can they?
2nd3rd1st they Got ibis and better stills 😄
I stayed at an Ibis once, it's not what it's made out to be...
I think Panasonic saw a chance to make an affordable version of the EVA1 and finally address low light issues of the smaller sensor. It's their answer to people who left Lumix for full-frame.
Great overview as usual Gordon. It’s a shame the price had to rise yet again over the GH5 launch price.
Think of it as a more affordable EVA1!
Great video, first time I really saw an explanation of how the 4 thirds sensor operates. Your comparison chart and review made up my mind. The cost of stabilization is getting cheaper by the day. Gh5s it is ..
Great summary Gordon. Always love your reviews. Keep up the good work mate.
Thanks! Glad it wasn't too heavy!
Thanks for your review. I like your work and I just bought your book :-)
Thanks! I hope you enjoy my book!
Thank you for once again providing all the subtleties of critical information missing from so many discussions. I still very much have my doubts as to the prowess compared to the a7s ii as that is a camera I shot for 2 years. And to date it remains the camera from which I have gotten the cleanest 1080p and 4k footage I have ever shot on any camera right up to ISO 25k. Saying such a small sensor offers the same result raises certain flags immediately in my mind.
But I'll be looking forward to your footage to test this. Cheers.
The A7s II is certainly the one to beat. I'm looking forward to making some comparisons...
Was having a multi-aspect sensor really worth removing IBIS for? And does it still have poor AF performance?
This could have been a really complete Camera for video if they kept the 5-Axis Stabilization. Guess will wait for the GH6 or
Sony A7S lll
charvelgtrs totally agree with you.
Complete if it had IBIS and AF that is usable. And they seem to have neither.
You just know the AS7 MKIII and the A6700 upgrade will have the A9 battery screen AF and new menu. They will be much more all round cameras.
They'll be the ones to beat! I'm looking forward to comparing them all...
How soon are you getting the A7S mark3 and A6700 to review?
Well given neither has even been announced yet, it's impossible to say. You're discussing speculation rather than anything we know firmly about. But I'm sure they will do updated models sometime this year.
Gordon Laing - yeah sorry - just seems to me the improvements that Sony need to do aren't even difficult - screen easy - battery they've done in the A9 etc - I just think MFT is up against it
Very informative video. I am a tech reviewer and I make videos every day. I use a tripod and other stabilizers. Should I buy GH5 or GH5s? I currently use Panasonic G7 with Metabones Speed booster XL and Sigma 18-35 lens. Thank you.
Both would be great. if you don't need IBIS, then the GH5S becomes more tempting but only if you'd use its extra features over the GH5. I think the GH5 would be more than enough for all but pro videographers / cinematographers.
Thanks for the answer!
I'm one of the few, it seems, that doesn't mind the ibis is gone. I had it shut off on both my GH5's, as it acted weird with metabones speedbooster mounted canon IS lenses. Seemed they fought against each other and created wonky results. Had to be one or the other. For me, I'm replacing my GH5's with GH5s's. I'm super happy about the 240fps and better low light (even though for most of my shooting, I was fine with the low light of the original GH5). This allowed me to sell my a7sII that was hanging around in the bag for those once in a while really low light shots.
Gordon, no IBS makes the GH5S less wanted compare to the GH5 and you reasoning for NO IBS reflects from a fanboy perspective IMHO.
Other than that it's a wonderful re/preview explaining in details. Thanks for that.
Greeting from Vancouver Island, Canada :)
Nah. I wish I could trade my Gh5 to S, since I use gimbal. Gh5s weighs less and the battery lasts longer and you don't run the risk of getting micro jitters from the sensor.
obayed haque I’m not even a super big fan of Panasonic cameras but I can say that IBIS is a gimmick feature at best. Is it nice to go handheld and get smooth shots? Absolutely. But I guarantee you’d get better footage by using a rig or a monopod or steadicam or gimbal like all of us who are used to getting paid to shoot video do. The Client isn’t going to see that you had an easy time shooting handheld, all they’re going to see is bouncing color noise at iso 800 on the gh5, lowlight sensitivity was always the biggest issue with the GH series cameras, and now that they’ve improved it vastly, it should be a game changer. Especially for wedding videography.
Cheers for this explanation buddy. Really helpful :)
You're welcome!
Great video. It explains the difference very clearly. Thanks, Gordon.
Thanks!
What is the crop factor with this new sensor for video/c4k? and does it film in cinema mode in other resolutions? Ive never owned a gh5 id be upgrading from a gh3
The field of view is the same for all modes due to the multi aspect sensor, and the field reduction compared to full frame is 2x like all MFT cameras. Compared to your GH3, you'll notice 16:9 not being as tall as 4:3, but genuinely a little wider.
Top notch as always!
Thanks for this great review, but correct me if I am wrong, GH5s not having the amazing 5 axis stabilization of the GH5 is a major disappointment. That is one (probably the number one) selling point of the predecessor GH5 and pushes me away from getting the GH5s.
It's disappointing if you want or need the stabilisation. For me, I would want it, but I'm not a pro videographer. Some pros prefer to do it themselves, and as I explained in the video, if you're shooting from a moving vehicle, the built-in IS can sometimes get shaken and work against you.
...Some...
I'm sure they wanted to use all the possible processing power for low-light capabilities and improved quality in general. High-end people have rigs and other setups, so it's not such a biggie for many. If the footage will blow us away, it's a small miss in the grand scheme on things.
This precisely. It's a combination of bean-counting at Panasonic's accounting department ($$$) and naivete listening to so-called "professional" filmmakers who claim to manage stabilization themselves, but never do anyway and deliver nauseatingly jittery footage, contending it's edgy. Giving users the choice is always better than taking it away.
I agree.
Good Review!
Does dual native iso make any distinct difference for still low light photo compare to G9?
Yes they tell me it will, generally above 800 ISO.
Mr. Gordon Laing... I do enjoy your videos .. I even watch some of your very length ones from beginning to end.. However I do think you should name these sorts of videos "overviews" rather than "reviews".. nitpick perhaps, but just a suggestion..
in any case , very good presentation of the gh5s here.. thank you
I use the term 'first looks', as that's what it is, but overview equally applies to these first videos. As you know, my big reviews follow later.
Very educational and successful to do that!
Any mention about auto-focus performance - Have they improved it in any way?
I believe it's similar to the GH5 in this regard.
subscribed just for your 'tell me why' shake up in Kai's video (Canon 6D Mii)
Thanks!
Yea but no. Class leading IBIS and EVF from the G9 plus usable video AF is all that was needed. This is not going to sell well.
Sorry. This is just another camera without IBIS.
No PAL framerates?!?!? Surely you must be kidding me!
Marcus Sundman where did I say that? I was qoting max frame rates. It's like the GH5: there's all the frame rates but now c4k is available beyond 24p.
I thought I was listening to a 14 year old right up unti 1:10 🤷♂️😂👌👍
ibis!auto focus! why!!!
It depends what you do?
because this is targetted for professional videographers. not trendy vloggers
