  • Keeping birds off your boat is a challenge. I have several unique solutions along with several commercial solutions to keep the birds away.

I have an osprey that for 3 weeks he has attempted to build a nest on top of our sailboat mast. I ran a helium balloon up, he broke the string. I ran a home made wire spider up on a stick, he snapped the stick. Next I'm going to construct a pool noodle spider and run that up. If that doesn't work a Van deGraff generator is next.

There's a "Lang Sailing School" here at the lake Zürich (Switzerland).

@svenlima Thank you for letting me know. Of course, there is no relationship between the school and myself. Lang is my first name, and I'll bet the school is named after someone with a last name of Lang.

@@CaptainLang Yes it's the guy's family name. Lang means Long in German.
It is clear that you have no relation to this guy but I find the similarities funny.

I use plastic snakes on spray hood and in front of the mast. It works very well, takes away around 80% of birds pho. If I had a snake on top of the mast it would probably be even higher. Snake size is around 50cm long.

I have 100% success rate with my new bird free solution. I've had the mast unshipped for a whole year and no more bird poo on deck.

Hello Captain, Wonder what you used to clean up the mess? On my boat, the seagulls eat their dinner (crab) and it s a real mess. I have tried Dawn, Oxy crystals, CLR, bleach, Krud cutter and soft scrub. The Dawn detergent remove some of the mess but Im still left with some very stubborn stains and Im beginning to scrub through my deck paint. Any suggestions are appreciated. Many Thanks.

For some reason the birds seemed to single my boat out as the communal toilet, while boats right next to mine remained poop free, I would arrive at my boat to find it sitting under a mountain of poop from stem to stern. Looking at where roosting birds crap in the wild, I noticed that they seemed to have a favourite spot amongst all the available places and I deduced that like many animals, they tend to crap in a place they feel safe, lets face it, you don't want to be caught by a sneaky lion just as you are straining one out now do you.
I figured that they had decided my boat was safer than the next one because it had been in the same place ashore for 8 months and no lions had been seen in the vicinity during that time. You may think this is odd but just imagine your reaction if a lion was running towards you, I guarantee your pucker would shrink tighter than a ducks ass, which we all know is watertight, and the last thing you would be able to do would be to have a nice relaxing poop now would it.
In simple terms, they had found a familiar safe place to poop and that was it as far as they were concerned, the local birds got on the phone to all their mates and before you knew it, my boat had become the new in place for safe crapping. sceptical

They make very small bungee-cords in place of the zip-tie idea. Do they make the ones in your video for temporary use? I've only seen the kind you have to cut and can't be reused.

The zip ties hold the bird spikes to the PVC pipe and the bungees hold the PVC pipe to the boat. Sorry if it wasn't clear.

It seems that my boat is not as interesting to birds as my neighbors. I only have serious issues when the neighborhood kids sprinkle breadcrumbs over my boat at a really low tide by mistake.

@thewaterheaterfactory Yes, I am still around. My long-time crew member, camera -man is no longer able to sail. I am training a replacement and hope to start new videos soon. Thanks for asking.
