The guy that got killed ,was a scout. He was counting the amount of vikings there were, and what armory they had. This way there was no information for the king. Look at the face of the scout in the beginning. You can see him taking in the info.

I will say that in spite of their victory, this was due to the decrease of raiding interest (at least for England) from the great Viking Lords. After the death of the last supposed son of Ragnar Lothbrok there was no one who had enough of a grudge and enough prestige to host another great raid or Heathen army. That made it easy to push out the last true Vikings who enforced the Danelaw.
