The man who was killed was one of Ecbert’s Thegns or Equivalent of a Baron, which Horik expected Ecbert to refuse Ragnar and his peace because of. Horik didn’t know Ecbert though. There were Vikings who converted to Christianity for political power . King Canute of Denmark & Norway was a Christian king . He successfully lead an invasion of England with a largely heathen army and became King of England . Despite being a Christian, the Pagan faith was tolerated under his rule because his army was Heathen . He endeavored to repair the churches & monasteries that were looted by his army and also built new ones.
