- The Amagi is one of the oldest ships in the game, made back when Zao was considered the worst HE spammer and IFHE didn't exist. Even with these weaknesses, it does have some unique strengths, which will be shown in the vid. You can find my recommended build at the end as usual.

Actually, in the closed beta there was only the IJN BB line, and there was no Izumo so you had to grind two tiers worth of xp on the Amagi to get the Yamato. Amagi is a very old ship.

@@Virgilfinnatell OG Izumo was worse than anything else near it. It's guns were inaccurate, its armor was mediocre, it had no AA and it's deck was empty save for the random pagoda and the 4x2 127's per side. Sure 90% of HE shattered on its empty deck but the thing caught on fire more than California does.
@@Virgilfinnatell Izumo has been massively buffed and can be considered one of the stronger T9 BBs now.
@@nnnn11112 I think old Izumo had 32mm deck too except for a very small part, so not even shatters.

Ah, Amagi, a thinking mans battleship. Back when broadsiding in battleship resulted in 1 shot death, turtleback only worked in brawling and tirpitz armor was considered a stupid meme. Loved that ship.
I three-shotted a broadsiding Yamato in it a couple of months ago. Boy did it feel good (even though I got burned down by his teammates seconds after that)

Amagi(in an old raspy mans voice): back in my day, we didnt have all these fancy gimmicks, just our guts and big guns, you whipper snappers dont realize how good you have it now, i remember when my distant cousin Izumo was the most hated battleship in the game, now theyre being praised, truly strange times for an old battlebote like myself
In my memory the Amagi will always be "that BB", that made 48k dmg on Tirpitz without citatel. Just raw penetration dmg.. The 1-shoted cruisers doesn't even come close that feeling.

Amagi was always pretty decent. The High Tier IJN BB grind used to have the awfulness of Izumo, but even she got buffed heavily and she's alright. Not fantastic, "Imma keep playing her after I get Yamato!" but she's a lot more decent than she was in 2018.
i resetted a week ago, now i'm stuck at the izumo and regret it ever since :(

Interesting, at 3:25 you can see one of the deepwater torps pass through the stern of the Azuma, yet at 3:31 it is hit in the centre by another deep water torpedo. Does this mean that the way deepwater torps work is less about "can't hit destroyers" and more about how deep the portion of the ship that is hit?

10:50 Turret 4 firing while being off target and it's in a very weird position.
It's an old bug, been there since launch. You can see it turn "through" the ship at 10:24 ish. Been reported a lot of times, still there.
It's cause the Replay file effectively takes a script and 'reruns' the battle instead of playing it like an MP4 file. The script doesn't take into account the player using "Free Look", and will turn the guns to the camera despite them holding right click, instead of leaving them locked on the bearing that the player was "aiming at" when clicking+holding right click.
Easy fix, WG lazy.
@@elgar7252 It also doesn't take into account modules, modifications, or captain skills, so you can have EM and the mods that boost traverse active and see them shoot "off-target" as well.

I loved the Amagi. I only played through it recently, after the CV and AA changes and after the OP Russian fakeboats, but it is still my highest average damage ship. I only have 3 tier 8 BBs, this the NC and the Bismarck, and the Amagi is the one I do best in by a long margin. What a shame it leads to the Izumo... althought my trouble with that ship seems to be more the fact that DDs on the Asia server have no idea how to play a team game at high tiers.
Thanks for this Flamu. I think it's very worthwhile revisiting some old ships, especially the mid tier ships. There's been so much change in the game that guide videos that are 2 or 3 years old are not really useful.

Really liking the throwback vids. More than the Izumo, I'd personally love to see more vids like the Pensacola one on positioning. You've made ones like that before, but some predate even the Worcester being added so I think refreshing them for the new meta while using some throwback ships would be great. How to DD, how to push properly in BB, etc.

Thank you for this video, it's great to get some insight into how to deal with T8 BB's especially considering the MM changes that mean almost every T6 game is now uptiered to T8. So, AP at long range for that citadel chance, and HE for medium ranges. Got it, good to know. Close range depends on angling.
I have played for 3 years now and just grinded through the Amagi like a month ago. It is still a great ship. And the guns are still trolly.
The amagi is where I stopped playing wows. I started playing in the open Beta and quickly became a toxic player. Watching my team do stupid things in slow motion was too much for me, so wows is a better place without me.
As a new player in the higher tiers thx for pointing out the basics that are rarely talked about

Thanks Flamu i really like the Amagi but i never really knew how to play her all that well now i have some pointers when i revisit.
Watching this in 2021 still really helpful, I'm not a big BB player and so trying to get used to this after the Nagato and the previous IJN BB's which were nice and nimble in comparison is a challenge, my favorite tips in this were to not be afraid to use HE (lol) and to not turn and lean the ship in close range engagements, as well as to pace the gameplay with not being too aggressive at the beginning and not too passive overall (not being too aggressive in the beginning was definitely something I needed to hear XD)
At 13:28, what does, "I unlock to make sure my turrets don't mess with my aim" mean? I see you unlock then Iowa briefly after the devastating broadside, but it gets relocked again seconds later.
it kind of makes sense the HE does more alpha dmg...there's a 29-30mm caliber difference in the guns.
Also very educational vod, didnt know that hard turning would change your armor angle value. Guess WG. put more thought into the game mechanics then i gave them credit for.
If there are more "hidden" mechanics like this in the game, a dedicated video would be awesome.

Me: Impressed because the Amagi is a battlecruiser not a battleship, so seeing it have sub-battleship level armor is surprising

Flamu spoiling us with so many YT videos recently.
At some point in the past I've commited to do a full secondary build on amagi (yes, including IFHE) and it was fun.
The secondaries are actually pretty powerful and effective against DDs but, as you said, the lack of base range hurts a lot. Ended up building a flanker afterwards.
I played through amagi years ago around just before the German bbs were added and it was one of my favorites. I still think I could jump in that ship and go hard with those guns
So glad to see a new Amagi video, she always was my favourite T8 BB, from way back in CBT even. Shame it has been so badly power crept :/ although Flamu does show just how good it can be in the right hands still!

Nice, I did not really knew about the amagi turtle back, time to get more manly in the future ^^ .
I ended up taking the rudder shift bonus over the damage prevention bonus because that rudder shift time really made me vulnerable. Flamu is right to take the damage control because of all the ridiculous HE spam but rudder shift is just so awful in the Amagi that I had to do something. I also took target acquisition over the concealment which is a mistake. I'm going to have to change that when I have the spare doubloons. I don't really understand his main armaments modification, I used the magazine modification instead because if i remember correctly I was getting citadelled alot in the Amagi. I had quite a few detonations. Using the expert loader also has me scratching my head. I find myself not using the HE enough to warrant spending the skill points on it. Each to their own. If it works for him than more power to him. Overall I find the Amagi a good enough ship but it is very situational. If you can swing it it can work very well but if you get hosed by HE you're done for. Don't EVER get caught broadside though, AP will mess you up.

Just got this, and I'm not sure what you mean about it having good dispersion. Every salvo looks like it's coming out of a yard sprinkler. Just goes freaking everywhere no matter the range

I remember long ago a bunch of guys in the NA forums were complaining about how hard it was to citadel Amagi in short ranged fighting.
"Where the hell is the citadel on this thing???" lol
They were taking their Bismarcks, NCs, etc. slamming Amagis in a brawl at the waterline, broadside, and not getting any Cits haha
Currently grinding this ship and only have 700 battles to my name (despite being in game since beta) I find it immensely different from Nagato. It's been quite a struggle especially with HE spam. Some of the tips in this video have helped clarify things a lot though.

Where did you get the info about the fuze arming threshold? Is it written in some wiki article or straight from the devs?
Is there a source on the turning circles being a lie? I couldn't find anything when I searched for it
The Amagi's situation is pretty much all the same as any of the older ships of any tech tree, but BB had HP, had Armor and had the margin of error, CA ditto and kind of wonky with CL, but many older DD simply are in dire need to had to be buffed, especially those at mid tiers

Offtopic : Does Nvidia Freestyle still works with wows with you guys? Since the last experience update it keeps saying : "a supported game is requiered to use this function". Reinstalling the drivers doesnt help.
I only played about 300 battles in this game so far, even though I first started playing back when the game still was in Beta and there only were 2 factions.
I'm a on-and-off player, who always plays the game for a week or so, gets bored, uninstalls it and then tries again a year later or so.
Back in the beginning I chose Japanese BB as my first line to grind, because I found them more sexy and I didn't like how slow American BB were.
So the Nagato is my highest tier regular tech tree ship and I am looking forward to the Amagi, the Yamato and even the Izumo, if I can motivate myself to keep playing this time.
People think it is funny when I tell them that I didn't even start that line because I want the Yamato, but the ship I really want is the Izumi. I just love weird BB, which is why I bought the Lenin, even though I don't like her playstyle and why I would like to get Nelson, but can't yet.
So I'm pretty glad to hear that Izumo has been buffed since back then, but the things I hear about how ridiculously and shamelessly OP high tier Russian BB are and with the specter of submarines being introduced to the game, I'm afraid that will finally totally ruin this game for me.

I actually plan on not getting PT and CE, so I could take faster reload on damage control and faster extinguishing time of fires and flooding.
You might not have got the Dreadnought because it requires you to take damage from a minimum number of enemy ships. Thanks for a great vid.

Huh. I didn't know the Amagi's turtleback was effective that way, but I had discovered from experience that she's a hell of a brawler. I remember in the old days, when people were still terrified to fight a Bismarck up close, and I'd charge them down laughing.
Amagi is a lovely ship.

Abhijeet Sutar the British Battleships are in struggle town at the moment, their AA is nowhere near what it should be, their real-life super thick armour belts don’t appear properly, they handle like slugs and are forced into spamming HE because they are too inaccurate to make use of their weird AP.
Pretty sure the Monarch is the turd of the british bb line as well there's always one turd in each line

While it has zero rep for it (as far as I know) under 5 KM I've found its secondaries to be damned vicious. Always enjoyed playing it.
Yeah, long time ago you could delete cruisers with their 140mm AP secondaries at close range... Now we have only HE. I did some "devastating strikes" to pensacola and myoko when they tried to ambush my nagato near to an island and my main guns aiming to the opposite direction, then... BLAP! 😂 I specially remember that poor pensacola with full hp deleted with one salvo with secondaries. I didn't even noticed during the game until I saw the replay after a ton of s*** he throw me on the chat 😅
@@jotasmail Got in to close quarters with an NC, and a mid-health cruiser (can't remember which) got within secondary range. I set my secondaries on the cruiser and focused on the NC. Managed to kill the NC and went to focus the cruiser, only to see it dying from THREE fires my secondaries set on him. Double strike / close quarters. Just had me WOW'ing.

Tried your 'i have a turtle back so broadside is ok' trick. Sinop did 30k dmg @ 7km with one salvo. No citadel though, so all good, right?????
Giving the enemy free broadside is always a bad idea, turtleback or not. The point of the turtleback is to protect your citadel in a battleship brawl/drive-by, so while a Sinop can chunk you for 30k, you can dev strike him with citadels.

Best ship for me in the Game
Best T8 for me, with a single salvo I took 68K from North Carolina, I've done a lot of damage with the Yamato, but I've never caused 68K with it in a single salvo 18 km away. And no, it wasn't detonation, It was a salvo of 6 citadels, great condition, good angle and good dispersion. I didn't believe it, it was in this very match that I broke my record with him. I finished the match with 11 citadels and more than 25 confirmed hits, something around 240K damage. Anyway, great ship, old but very powerful.
