New 2 Series Coupé is The BMW we all need! // M240i xDrive

  • They might call it the 2 Series Coupé- but don’t let them fool you. This is in truth, a 3 Series coupe. Particularly our 240i, which uses literally everything from a 440i and shoved it into a smaller better looking mini coupe!

The team behind the new 2 Series are true heroes. With the 1 series and all other 2 series compact #BMW’s ditching the niche RWD market in favour of front wheel drive, the 2 series engineers insisted on three things for the coupe: a RWD platform shared with 3/4 series, the famous 6 cylinder in the performance models, and a design to totally differentiate it to other compact cars. It’s a battle they fought, and won for us, a tiny niche in the car world who still lust after the small 2 door sport coupe!
So in a lot of ways, it’s not an exaggeration to say that this is the most important BMW they’ve released in modern times. The 2 series coupe is trying to be the best it can in every way too, with not just platform stolen from 3/4 but tech and materials from those cars, unlike the predecessor 1 and 2 series coupes. And of course an M2 coming as the spearhead of 50 years of #BMWM!
Today we’ll see the history of the 2 series, how it evolved from the BMW 02, then E30 3 series, to the more modern first predecessor in the 1 series coupe E82.
We’ll directly compare it to the 2 series F22 coupe, how the 2 series started to evolve into it’s own thing - along with the evolution of the M2, all the way to the CS!
In our new gen, all BMW compact cars became FWD cars with transversely mounted engines, including the popular M hatchbacks and the 2 series 4 door variants. The #2series Coupé however, shares little to no DNA with these cars.
Instead it sits on the CLAR platform, shared with 3/4, rather than FWD platform of 1 etc
4 Series Chassis technology - today’s M240i borrows the powertrain wholesale from the M440i.
    So, that’s a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six with: 374BHP, 500nm and a claimed 4.3secs to 60 (we are much quicker).
Driven by a rear biased XDrive with M-sport diff as standard - the 240i has Increased negative camber on front end, lift related dampers are standard, electronic dampers in the adaptive M suspension option, active aero flaps reducing lift and the 8 speed roque converter. It’s heavy though, 1755kg in the xDrive, let’s see if we feel it.
The design is a key selling point: Maximum differentiation to 1 Series and other 2 Series models. It’s longer than the older car, wider but not as tall: giving it a stance as mean as an M2!
The interior is a massive selling point, and justifies a lot on the price increase in this generation. It is the same if not better than the four series in almost all areas - huge improvement over the last gen, and the tech and comfort will really surprise you! As well as how brilliant it is on mileage on the motorway.
BUT, at the price it sits, it’ll have to really convince us that it’s worth buying over a previous gen M2! Let’s see how it does!
Up next on RBR is a surprise video about AMG’s future line up!! Subscribe to support us and see it first. :)

It's fantastic. Less on the edge/in your face than an m2 or m3. I test drove an m240i and was instantly sold. Sure, ive driven more focussed pure sports cars, and this is not that. This is a sublimely capable sporty couple that in a fraction of a second transforms into a stupidly fast hooligan. Power in spades, lovely place to be, comfortable ride when you want it and still rather practical. Best car I've owned ❤

Unfortunately for me (as an ex BMW and Alpina owner) the new design language simply doesn't cut it. Deep creases with lot's of tack-on vents and louvers are simply too much for my own tastes. Aside from the looks, I do however really like how rounded and well developed this car is.

I have got the B58 engine in my 640i GT , it’s a fabulous engine, also with standard X-Drive but it was withdrawn from sale in the UK at short notice, and now only available in other parts of the world with much smaller engines (sounds familiar?). Tthe 640i M Sport was designed for smooth cruising rather than the out and out fun of the M240i. I wish I could afford to run both cars. All Hail the B58!!

What is more worrying is the weight. Looks small, but weighs like a 4 series. Jason Camissa made a review of it and that is really made me doubt this car.

I drove the purple one and loved the color, it’s a Great engine for sure, the trans is very smooth, exterior looks are fine with me except for the cheap plastic side skirts. Now for the not so good stuff…The steering wheel is way to Thick, the dash gauges are very cheap looking, the seats suck for me with cheap hard leather and as he said would be better with the bmw upgraded leather.

The old 2 series was a much nicer looking car imo.
This has a flat, slab-faced front, and the A pillar (if you follow the lines down) doesn't resolve itself in the middle of the front wheel like the old car, which looked so right. It resolves behind the front wheel making the bonnet look too long compared to the rear. The front wheels look as if they are pushed too far forward, yet the rear looks like a blob from the side.
The lights being too small, accentuate the blobbiness.
Get an image up of this and the old car side by side.
Honestly, I think most people probably don't look hard enough, and just see a couple of big black triangles at the front and some naff black skirt on the side and go 'ooooh that looks nice'.
I'm a BMW fan, owned 4 in my last 5 cars, and currently own an M140i. I didn't like the new 1 series, and certainly don't like it's FWD biased xDrive, or it's engine, so maybe I'm not the target market anymore.
The last M2C was stunning, and the perfect design, engine, and driven wheels. This might be faster from a launch than the old M2, but if you value traffic light grand prix as worthwhile, then you are not really a fan of driving.
As for the 'ambiance lighting' oh please. It's starting to look like a chinzy Mercedes inside now. BMW's have always had clear binnacle and dials, driver focussed, without having to resort to any of the tacky rubbish other manufacturer's do, and that is what made them stand out as driver's cars.
