Nice work guys, I usually run steady on the trail for a 10k, or go up the gravel path to the top of Royd Moor for a hill climb, I love a progressive 5k too. I did some speed reps last week and really ought to do a bit more ... Off to Penistone parkrun very soon !
At the age of 71, the most difficult part of the session is the warm-up. I've made a concerted effort NOT to worry about hitting a specific pace from the off. A walk, jog, walk, think mile seems to help my body make a positive start to the workout. A mixture of hills, tempo and speed in the session, is far more appealing than 10 hills or just a plod. I ran yesterday and mixed it up. 1. warm up with jog, walk, think for 1 mile. 2. 3 Cross Lane reps. A steady one, a just a bit slower than race pace one, then a blast for the last one. 3. Recover 4. Down Hartcliff concentrating on technique 5. Last mile - jog, walk, think to finish off. 5 miles plus or so with a bit of everything.
I sometimes forget how much more enjoyable a run can be when you vary the pace a bit. Steady plods can get a bit tedious after a while. This one had a bit of everything! If i can pick your brain about 5k race warmups, would you say this sounds reasonable for tomorrow? 10 to 15 mins jog, dynamic stretches and some strides.
Yes Mark. I'd do those plus a few drills too. Like fast feet and high knees. I believe there is some good footage out there of people warming up for 5ks in Queen's Park 😉
We enjoy those too, especially being a tourist discovering new routes or tootling off road. However, with marathons due in October, a few workouts are necessary...🙂
