Ok I actually listened to Wylan’s track in full and. Not only did they give him piano, flute, and CELESTE (basically the most harmless sounding instrument), they also gave him the same violin line that you hear when we first meet Kaz??? His theme basically tells you everything you need to know about him! He’s got the facade of a sweet and innocent guy, the background of someone who knows piano and flute, and is on a danger level at least comparable to Kaz Can I just say, THE character ever
so much so that for someone like me, who has not read the books and has only seen the show on netflix, from the first second he came on screen (mind you, i had no idea his character even existed) he immediately became my son. i saw him and his messy lil mop of hair and his soft spoken voice and i was like "this is my son now and i will protect him"
It's also one of the few interactions they have in the season. Small yet effective way that she's totally accepts him as a Crow and not just because Kaz hired him.
The whole scene with the butterflies reminded me that Jack once tweeted about waving to a spider in a coffeeshop and being embarrassed. That tweet might be what got him the role.

If you have seen the show and are somewhat familiar with the world then no you do not have to read the trilogy first :) even if you havent watched the show you can still just read the duology. Just pay attention to the explanation of the grisha at the begining of the book so you dont get confused later.
How they deal with emotion is an interesting contrast. Wylan won't face it. He looks away or goes silent. If he's making eye contact in an emotional moment, like 8:40, you know he's really upset, or it's something big. Jesper on the other hand can't handle emotional ambiguity. He needs to face it and remove any uncertainty immediately so he doesn't panic, even if it's just a false sense of security ("Tell me you have a plan...I don't care if it's a lie"). For him, when he's really overwhelmed with emotion, his normally boisterous, exuberant voice becomes a pained whisper, as at 9:10. I've seen some people critique the portrayal of their relationship, saying it came too easy, especially compared to the books (which admittedly, I have not read). While I don't mind that getting them together was pretty quick and simple compared to the other major couples in the show, I think the show runners have an opportunity to really get into making them work to overcome their contrasting ways of dealing with emotion and learn how to communicate in an effective way. By the end of S2, they're together but they're really still in the honeymoon phase of the relationship. Exploring them more when they have settled into their roles a bit more will potentially be interesting. I think it's really hard with a talented ensemble cast like this to really give every character and every relationship the depth and richness they deserve. I think the show does pretty decent at that but to really do everyone justice, they probably need to slow down a little bit and add a few episodes each season.
Can we just, when he says "You didn't remember me" it's like he somewhat stumbles on the word remember, like some of the letters aren't properly heard I just can't stop thinking about it it's so well done I love him (And, and, when Wylan played the Piano, Jesper's gaze quite literally softened I don't care what anyone else says)
