People always skip over the part at the end where Katniss really was going to kill Peeta in the end cause she thought he was going to try and kill her. It's such a small part of the book, but such a pivotal part of how the games have already twisted Katniss' trust and understand of their relationship.
Yeah, Katniss was just prepared to kill Peeta if she was forced to because of Snow's brainwashing. Do you remember at the end of Catching Fire where Katniss wanted to kill Peeta first before the Capitol does it themselves? Yeah, that's how the games fucked up Katniss's mental state.
Honestly there were a lot of moral details that got cut out of the movies and it kinda irked me because of the depth of character lost. These characters are all VERY real, complex and have lives. Each character has their own entire story they could tell, and it's a shame to lose out on parts of katniss that *made* her who she is. I love all the inner monologues between the end of the first book and beginning of the second where katniss is second guessing her actions and beliefs and if she even feels responsible for the uprisings.
I think it says more of Katniss and who she is cus she never trusted Peeta. Every little thing he did, she perceived it as a ploy even before the games, it’s part of her character to not trust or let people in, the games didn’t do that. Even Gale, it took time for her to let him in and they weren’t even trying to kill each other. She knows the games bring out the worst in people but she never trusted Peeta until waaay after the games.
well if you figured out that it means ''game'' then there's your answer@@mesaana1112 . I don't make the rules, words change and I adapt just like many people. I'm not saying it doesn't exist anymore (the term ''game'') rizz is slang I guess. Sorry for any grammar mistakes, english is not my first language.
@@mesaana1112 people still use "game." "Rizz" is just the go-to word now tho lol. I was also confused by it at first but understood what it meant pretty quick. It's kind of a dumb word imo but I like it nonetheless, haha
i know people have theories she never really loved him and was just using him just as he was using her, and we sometimes also get a couple nods that she uses men to get what she wants, including money thru manipulation or sex work (there was a few hints to that throughout the book tbh) so he was just another play thing for her to win the games, yet imo that song is just debunks that whole thing. that and her rushing to go meet him when he walks off to the side during a performance to find sejanus with spruce and billy taupe (the scene where he shoots the mayor’s daughter). you don’t make a whole song about someone you don’t care about, calling them ‘pure as driven snow.’ also i’m so glad she broke outta the trance that she loved him. my personal theory is that neither of them ever actually liked each other hence why the ending twist kinda came fast. they were in this weird unbalanced power dynamic relationship. snow likes control and he was basically controlling lucy gray the entire time she was his tribute. his feelings towards her lessened when they went back to 12 and she was able to run freely without any pressure of anything and he was no longer her mentor. she, on the other hand, was the lesser one in terms of power because she almost completely had to rely on him to make it out of the games alive. had he not fed her prior she would’ve died of starvation, and he would deliver her meals and water in the arena and give her tips to win. her feelings of gratitude likely morphed into feeling that she loved him. it also helped that he was one of the few people that treated her like a person in the Capitol, even cheating to help her win (tho ofc that was for himself but she doesn’t know it). it’s not the most clear in the book as it’s entirely from his perspective and so we’re only getting his skewed ass version. basically we don’t know if lucy gray had been wary of coryo for longer than the finale cause he had no reason to think she would be after all so that was never added bc he didn’t see it. it was probably a choice from suzanne collins to make it so ambiguous and i love it.
I only noticed after my recent reread that Peeta's gesture with the bread not only prevented Katniss and her family from dying of starvation. One day after that happened she saw Peeta at school and she saw him staring at her and because she was embarrassed ig she turned her head to the ground and found a dandelion, which reminded her of the meadow and her father. She then ran there and made a dandelion salad for her family and got the idea to hunt in the woods like she did with her father. So basically: Peeta saved her life (like on several levels).
One of the things I thought about a lot while reading the prequel is Snow's age. He was 18 during the 10th Hunger Games, meaning he was EIGHTY TWO during the 74th games in the first book. Like, I knew the man was old, but 82?
Ik this was posted a while ago but it actually is such a good reflection of our real world currently since the two ppl most likely to get on the ballot are literally in their early 80s rn and would hit 84 during presidency😭 she lowkey ate with this crazy age
imagine not only falling in love with a girl that sings a song which in like 64 years will come to bite you, but your family invests all its assets into the district that will be your downfall and that everyone thought was blown up
I read the prequel back when it first was released, I really liked it, but I didn’t feel like rereading it because of other books I’m currently reading, so thanks for the recap Amanda!
For anyone that has trouble pronouncing Coriolanus and Sejanus, here's a little guide: Coriolanus: Core - ree - oh - lay - nus (you can also use his nickname "coryo") Sejanus: Suh - jay - nus
A lot of the romantic subplot in the first hunger games book is just like Peeta: *acts obviously in love* Katniss: Oh my gosh he’s trying to play me, he hates me and he’s gonna try and kill me. She’s so oblivious, probably because she’s so incredibly aroace and is emotionally closed off.
The first book is really good and the third is probably the worst of the series but I still love it (which is very complementing to the rest of the series) also even though she explained the whole thing definitely read ballad of songbirds and snakes because I have read it like five times and love it more on each read.
@@lucygarrett9785 after rereading the series this past few weeks, i've gained a new appreciation for Mockingjay and i think it might be the best of the 3 tbh. Catching Fire was my favorite when i read through them first time and I still might stand by that but the way Mockingjay is such a change of pace and really explores Katniss' trauma and what Peeta means to her, which i really enjoyed 2nd time around. but also Mockingjay gave me the friendship between the 2 pettiest characters and I live for every Katniss & Johanna interaction.
One thing I love about katniss is that she’s an unreliable narrator. Her interpretations are shown not to line up with the reality of the situation because of her life experiences. I feel not many books have a narration similar to the hunger games where the audience is following Katniss the whole time and we are shown it more objectively and then you have Katniss’ internal narration interpretation that deviates from what the reader was just shown
I just realized (kindof embarrassing actually that it took so long) that 2 of the most poor districts in panam both had a first time entry child be chosen for their female candidate in the reaping. What are the odds?
Sejanus's dad gained his wealth by investing in something really popular (I forget what) that's part of the reason Coryo hates him, because he's jealous his dad didn't invest in the same thing. Also, Sejanus's parents didn't just decide to give the Plinth prize, it's something they have been doing for the past ten years. And, he didn't just have a "feeling", he knew Dr. Gaul was going to send the snakes in because she remarked something about a "rainbow of destruction", which she also mentioned when Clemie was bitten.
Strabo (Sejanus's dad) was a munitions tycoon. He made a fortune from his war profiteering and sided with President Ravinstill during the war, which was how he and his family were able to move from District 2 to the Capitol, which also led to their entire District 2 community despising them because they view them as traitors after what Strabo did. Also to clarify, part of the reason why Coryo hates Sejanus is because he views him as someone who is stealing his place (as in the fact that after the Snows had lost their money from the "destruction" of District 13 where they had originally invested in their munitions, the Capitol moved their military manufacturing to District 2, thus landing into the Plinth's laps). He and his family are district and Coryo believes that they don't deserve their wealth.
@@Lauren_210Yes, that is a part of it, but that is kinda connected to what I said, and I still think my original point is also a part of his hatred towards Sejanus. I also never said it was THE reason, I just said it was a part, there can be multiple parts.

One thing I don't see people talking about much, and I didn't notice this at first because I didn't think too much into the lyrics of the song, is she says he's as pure as *driven* snow. Especially since not a lot of people use the term "driven snow" like what do those 2 words mean together like that? It means snow that snow was driven over. Not like "driven Snow" as in Snow being ambitious.
