    For tourism I would avoid it for now. I live and work in Bogotá. The biggest issues right now are half the population is not working, and much of the transportation network is out of service.

    A year and a half ago - I wrote here - that the closure of the country - the impoverished - have nothing to loose now - they are poor - hungry - worried - things reversed 10 years backwards and the local young know this - recognize this - compared to other thriving Latin American country’s that didn’t close

    I live in the south of Colombia (10 hours away from Cali). We are experiencing food shortages especially sugar, rice and wheat. Most stores are closed because they have nothing to sell. This area is blocked and there is no public transportation. This region has many dairy cows and is considered the "Switzerland of Colombia" so the dairy farmers can't sell their milk to the national producers. They are making cheese and yogurt and selling their milk in plastic soda bottles for $800 pesos/liter - they are desperate and call my house every day to sell their milk. Public schools have been closed for weeks. Gasoline is usually not available and if a truck can get through, there are long lines. Also, propane tanks have run out and people are cooking with wood to survive. You both seem like nice people, but you are not Colombian and you have a business that depends on foreigners. I would not advise anyone to come to Colombia right now. Colombians are going through a catharsis so they are mentally and psychologically in pain - that is not a good time to visit anyone. White shirts represent Uribismo, which is the wealthy elite ruling class that is responsible for paramilitary (paracos) in Colombia under Alvaro Uribe and who is directing current president Ivan Duque and his repressive administration. Most Colombians are protesting against the white shirts because they have nothing to lose and have shut the country down for over a month thanks in part to the courageous Indigenous populations who are bravely blocking the roads because it is their only method to fight against the National government. President Duque is sending 3x more military to Calí and has a tone of voice that he will escalate violence instead of listening to his country and the international community has condemned his administration's use of violence. International Human Rights Groups are demanding President Duque step down as president. Even the USA White House rejected a meeting with the Colombian vice president (she did meet with the Secretary of State in Washington) as a form of political protest to their repressive strategy towards the Colombian people. Please wait to visit Colombia when all this settles out.

      This 👆so well put - the paro is far more complex. I enjoy the content they put out but this is not the time to encourage people to visit. I’d go as far as to say it’s irresponsible. This isn’t a poorly- organised protest, it’s something that’s been brewing for a long time and is in direct response to the increasing violence and inequality in the country. One person’s experience in Bogota is purely anecdotal and anyone thinking of visiting should do independent research. There are currently 400 missing people, 43 confirmed deaths and the government has allowed the military and the anti-riot police (ESMAD) to respond with force. There is also no end in site. Colombia is an extraordinary country and I’d encourage anyone to visit but not right now.

    As living in Cali , it is very tense at the moment ,they have called in the army,and we are in a lockdown from 7pm from Friday to Sunday,there’s more helicopters flying past than cars, no public transport.well they have destroyed most of the mio stations. Who knows where this is all going , very worrying.

  • @ElenaCarvajal
    @ElenaCarvajal 3 года назад +2

    I'm in Bogotá, I'd tell tourists to avoid traveling here for a few months. It's bad with police and paramilitary. It doesn't matter if you are a protester or just trying to get home from work, if they grab you, you disappear! They grab women too. If you're independently wealthy, or don't have to leave your home to work early or late hours, and only do errands in the morning, don't be outside at night, and watch out to make sure there are no protests or police between your home and your destination, then it's not too bad, but then again I'm with a Colombian who was born here, and we have a two steel front doors to go through, with huge locks, to lock ourselves in our house. Still, we are planning to leave here soon.

    I was in Medellin 1.5 weeks ago and saw no hint of any strift although I didn't go to the central area. Traffic was fine, train was fine, everything was fine. They even had police playing accordions, singing and handing out flowers to women (no joke!). I think because I was staying in the rich older person area (Envigado) where they probably are more on the police side of things.I didn't go out at night past 8 though as I don't feel it's the safest of cities (and I'm from chicago!)

      @gnolan4281 3 года назад +1

      The guy that was murdered made a video in which he came right out and said he was worried about his safety. It's as if he KNEW he would be murdered but it had nothing to do with the other deaths such as in Bogota or Cali. He bought some apartments and a restaurant and it appears he may have been swindled in the restaurant sale. What bothers the Americans and others who are aware of this is that very often police never solve the crimes.

In different part of medellin they are protesting and there are vandalizing a lot if businesses Its not safe. You have to be out of your mind to recommend Medellin or any other city in Colombia. Its not the right time and tourist/expats can be a target. Please do not travel there right now. Wait until the whole national protest is officially over. Stop pretending that everything is safe in Colombia, stop living in your bubble and dont put others at risk. It will take at least 4 month to go back to normal once the “national protest” is over.

    Here’s a thought, in 2020 the United States riots went from city to city. I Iive in Washington DC & the city was on fire the whole summer & even the White House was compromised. I’d never thought in my lifetime Washington DC would be under attack from Summer of 2020-Winter of 2021. Common sense tells me that in Colombia the riots will spread like it did in America one city at a time. Riots are like fire it eventually spreads. It is only a matter of time riots hit the poor areas of Medellin. It could be in one week or one month. Please consider a “PLAN B” an escape plan before it’s too late to act. Better safe than sorry.
