      @ZoulousProductions Ouigo is good. But it's not Ryanair cheap. You can still end up paying €100+ for a Paria-Marsaille train. It's why France wants the EU to implement minimum prices on flights because trains just cannot compete with the budget airlines.

      @@joshmarsh2532 You're wrong. Trains are always winning because of the luggage fee, they drop you right in the city, not in a 20mn away airport. You can board any TGV train 3 minutes before departure, you can't with planes. The only exception is destinations not well desserved by direct train like Brest, Toulouse, Nice, etc everything not direct TGV.

  • @123pgq
    @123pgq Год назад +201

    I think the comparisons would be more interesting if you used public transport exclusively. Cabs in France are so expensive and public transportation works generally well. Considering that your final destinations are not the suburbs, I don't think you'll have any problem using the metro or the buses. Those £14 would be less than €2 if you used the metro in Marseille.

    • @shogunkrkn4616
      @shogunkrkn4616 Год назад +4

      It would not change much the comparison. In both cases Paris Orly and Marseille, they are buses that will take the same roads than cabs departing every 10 minutes but having dedicated bus lines when arriving near cities.

    • @robertheinrich2994
      @robertheinrich2994 Год назад +6

      that would be interesting.
      furthermore, the cost comparison was slightly unfair because it was first class train vs economy on the plane. guess, that would have cut the cost of the ride significantly.
      furthermore, how much luggage is allowed on the plane vs on the train? flights are still seriously restricting.

    • @123pgq

      @@robertheinrich2994I completely agree. I guess only the time matters for this challenge in particular, but few people in France would spend £151 on this train route (you can find tickets for €15-€30 if you search in advance). However, I'd rather spend that money on a train than on a cab to Orly +a 1-hour plane ride... That's insane.

    I remember when it was around six hours to get down to Marseille, now with that high speed track all the way down, 3h18 is RAPID! They should ban the plane on that route, it should win every time. Only worth having domestic flights to Nice and Corsica. @PascalGienger Год назад

      @@simonkile598As background info: The TGV service itself already stopped many domestic flights beginning in the 1980ies. Air Inter - the former domestic airline of France - went bankrupt due to the TGV AND the horrible accident approaching Strasbourg (missing a navigation point ). The private air company Air Inter complained often about "state subsidized railroads" but the public endorsed the fast trains.
      The TGV atlantique Strasbourg - Paris - Nantes - Brest started in its blue livery (decommissioned now) beginning of the 1990ies. Since then it ate most of domestic flights.
      The ban was just a bit on top not really affecting much.
      What I am wondering is why AF has Orly - Marseille as CDG - Marseille would be way better. You're faster at CDG via RER than in Orly and you can use that es extension leg to the final destionation for arriving international passengers wanting to go to Marseille.
      Air France replaced many of those last destination flights with TGV service and your flight coupon is also a TGV seat reservation.

    The realiity is the TGV wins easily, common people use the public transport and the Navette Aeroport from Marseille Airport to the Vieux Port and the displacement from Central Paris to Orly would only add more time in comparison to the simple TGV scheme of Metro to Gare de Lyon, TGV and Metro to Vieux Port.

    Taking taxis in Paris is the most unintuitive thing to do. From Le Louvre all he had to do was to take line 7 at Palais Royal Musée du Louvre to Villejuif Louis Aragon then Tramway 7 to Orly Airport. Zero extra cost if he bought a commuting pass, maybe 2x 2 euros if he paid on the spot. Sure it adds about 20 minutes but it doesn't change anything overall. The plane will still take off at the same departure time. Moreover if there is traffic the taxi can be slower and one might miss his flight.

    Would be interesting to compare CO2 emissions or the climate impact of both ways of travel.
    The train (at least in France thanks to nuclear) has a way smaller CO2 impact than that plane. The entire travel by plane war very Fossil fuel intensive Taxi Plane Taxi - while the train travel was frugal and could have even been better without that last taxi trip.
    All in all it’s good that the french government banned those flights where there is a train connection in less than 2 hours - hopefully they’ll start taxing kerosene and plane tickets too very soon 🤞🏻
