  • Inchkeith Island lies in the middle of the Firth of Forth and in the past has always formed the first line of defence from any sea invasion.
Our quest on this Sea Kayaking Adventure was:
Day 1. Drive to Musselburgh and kayak the short 6.5 miles to the uninhabited island of Inchkeith where we would camp for 2 nights. On the way we'd check out the wreck of the "Switha" a Fisheries Protection Vessel that ran aground on the Little Herwit rocks South East of the Island then circumnavigate the island anticlockwise before landing in the old ruined harbour.
Day 2. Spend the full day thoroughly exploring and photographing the island with camera and drone to record the many military ruins, buildings and tunnels built to defend the entire Firth of Forth from any invasion from the sea. Some of the gun emplacements housed huge 6 and 9inch guns capable of taking out any enemy vessel that dared approach the Forth.
Day 3. Pack up the boats and kayak back to our start point then drive home.
Inchkeith has a very varied history of intermittent habitation dating back more than 1800 years. Its military defences date back to the 16th century.
Inchkeith, from the Scottish Gaelic meaning, "Innis' (Island) and "Cheith" (War). Inchkeith hides a very mysterious storied and lengthy history of plague, disease, quarantine and a slow lingering death for many people who were forcefully shipped out there.
I would urge people to read the fascinating facts and history about the island and its torrid history!
    Thanks for Watching!

I visited this island many times over the years, there was a woman who stayed in the white house near the lighthouse ,she had goats, chickens and about 12 rescued dogs who would come down to greet you when you landed,we found an old wooden crate full of straw and i think 11 rifles and ammunition, we buried it not far from the house and covered it with bricks to return at a later date and retrieve it but we never did so they will still be there, great island to explore.

@@jvtaxi3766 Hi JV, thanks for your comments and interesting encounters when you've visited in the past.
There are still a few rouge chickens roaming the island and a whole host of eggs laid in great numbers in the old house low down near the shore in the Northern bay. I did find a human femur in amongst weeds and scrub on the right of the roadway leading up from the main jetty area...maybe someone found the rifle/ammo stash and had an accident 😳😳 🤔🤔 or could have been from sometime in the islands dark history??
Absolutely... a great island to explore 👌

I worked on this island to clear the elder trees out of every accessible area. Enjoyed every minute of it.

Hi Dean and thanks for your comments 👍 Yes, it was very noticeable how much hard work had been carried out. Was that undertaken on behalf of the guy who was considering opening it up to the public as some kind of Museum??
I remember someone saying something to that effect, was he something to do with QuickFit??
The Island stands as testament to our intricate coastal defences throughout the centuries. I must go back for another explore but fear all your had work will have succumbed to the ravages of time, young saplings were sprouting from the bases of the stumps that were left despite the observed efforts to poison and plug them.
The old rotten dead timber made for a fabulous campfire during our visit, thank you!

Beautiful film. I don't think it needed music, just the sound of nature is enough.

Such a shame such a beautiful island is wasted. Interested to know if you had any ‘spooky’ experiences whilst there? Very brave of you to stay overnight! Was that a human femur bone??? Thank you for a great video

Hi Serenity and thanks for your comments. It's an interesting island steeped in history but being so remote has just been left overgrown. Yes, a human femur bone which could have been unearthed from the many inhabitants over centuries.

Thanks Aaron, they weren't bad this time but last year, we were out right in the middle of the breeding season and they were everywhere so much so they nearly took the drone out! They can be very inquisitive especially Oystercatchers.
