This concert footage has a long and interesting history. It’s been lost, stolen, damaged, recovered, restored, and at last, is finally available for public viewing almost 30 years to the day after it was originally recorded!
Recorded on Friday, March 12, 1993. The night of this performance was the proverbial calm before the storm: the following day New York City was inundated by what is now referred to as the 1993 Storm of the Century.
The audio is in its original format. However, a few parts of the video have been edited or enhanced to compensate for damaged or missing footage from the original performance.
By the 1700s, opera had become the dominant form of live entertainment. At the time, there was limited public demand for solo instrumental music. Composers of instrumental music were then forced to devise a clever solution to this dilemma: compose variations that were based upon borrowed popular operatic themes.
“Variations on a Theme, op. 9” by the guitar virtuoso Fernando Sor is based around a thematic material form Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” One can still imagine Mozart’s screams of genius as he composted the elegant lines of the enchanting melody featured in this piece.
