- In a heart-wrenching incident that occurred in 2021, bodycam footage from the Pharr Police Department captures the devastating aftermath of a deadly drunken crash that claimed the life of a 16-year-old and left a 12-year-old injured. The video reveals the scene as officers arrived at a family's apartment, where an intoxicated driver, identified as 22-year-old Jesus Cruz, had recklessly slammed his car into the building. The impact of the collision was so severe that it took the life of a teenage victim who was sleeping inside the apartment at the time, and left another child with serious injuries.

The bodycam footage provides a chilling glimpse into the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, as a heavily intoxicated Jesus Cruz struggles to perform sobriety tests and coherently explain the events that led to the crash. A Texas judge handed down a 20-year prison sentence to Cruz after he pleaded guilty to charges of DWI with death and serious bodily injury.

Wow, this story is so tragic. My heart goes out to the family who lost their baby.
People are still not taking the "don't drink and drive" message seriously thinking that only happens to someone else.
So So So SAD 💔💔RIP Lil One.
Imagine putting your child to bed only to have this happen in a place you believe he's safest. God bless that family!

@@Refertech101this is the dumbest comment. There is absolutely nothing they could have tactically done to prevent this. Besides sleeping in a a panic room and that’s not even logical. So this was so unnecessary to state.
@@jessicavalentine4807 She probably meant people should use their brain ( he should have used his brain) and not be so careless as to cause a tragedy like this but the "life isn't always safe" comment makes no sense, like duh. Some people don't express themselves well I guess.
@@Refertech101 Right... the kid asleep in his bed at night was in "the wrong place, wrong time". As already mentioned by other commenters, this is among the dumbest comments I've read on youtube. So much so I'm commenting way after this video was posted.
If you kill someone while willfully being intoxicated with either drugs or alcohol. It should be treated as murder and not manslaughter. Min of atleast 50 years.
That is too harsh, it should be 5 years maximum.
@@bravebeard6225 That's too light of a punishment.

Imagine being in your home, the place where you are supposed to feel safe and secure. You're sleeping, and some drunk piece of s*** decides to drive recklessly in his car and wrecks into your house and kills you. Horrific.

Wow, so someone is dead because he killed them, and he's upset ems is tending to the people inside the house he hit.. what a POS one is DEAD, and the other child is in CRITICAL CONDITION!!
This country is too leinient on DUI/OWI offenders. He willingly drank all that alcohol which in my opinion should be manslaughter, life w/o parole! He can't keep his lies straight and total lack of remorse is disgusting. My condolences to that poor family at the loss of one child and the injured other child.
It is manslaughter. It's vehicular manslaughter/DUI
Manslaughter in itself is not life in prison.
We need national DUI/OWI reform!
First offense: license suspension. Ignition interlock upon reinstatement.
Second offense: permanent loss of license!
This must stop!
Yep.
I agree so many of these channels alone are all about drunk drivers , some with multiple DUIs
The justice system is part of the problem if they made the consequences more serious we would not see multiple channels showing drunk drivers
Depending on the investigation, could be murder...
Wow. Took someone's life away from them without them even knowing, and he gets 20 years. Probably less with probation and good behavior. If that were my child, I'd take the law into my own hands, because justice was not served.
What would you suggest is an appropriate sentence?
@@UrielCriminalDefense I suggest that his life is forefeit, and that his sentence be commensurate with the level of life-long emotional trauma that his terribile decisions have created. If I made the laws, he would be confined to a rehabilitation facility and forced to study the nature of life, the nature of humanity, and the origins and application of love, empathy, and sacrifice, until he, by his words AND deeds, tested out of the facility to a parole board, and then lived the rest of his life tithing the majority of his income to the victims family, at the expense of his standard of living. And that's his last chance. If he screws that chance up, I suggest we offer the family a chance to put a bullet through his head, and, if they don't want to, then we throw him into a meat grinder and feed make him into a raw meat diet for police and military working dogs.

20 years in prison *for a guilty plea* seems serious enough to me. See the video description.
@@aaronmdjones I mean for most Dui’s even if there is no fatalities there should be felony charges. There was a young woman who had numerous DUI’s and killed two people in one dui crash 2 years later she killed her cousin who was in the car with her. Just as an example. First time, even 2, maybe even 3 times a Persia caught drunk driving it’s a misdemeanor, it’s not taken seriously as it should be. Why should a felony or prison sentence come after they seriously hurt or kill someone?
Exactly.. f-in hate alcohol. I’ll never understand it.

True. All people would have to do is have a DD, Uber, taxi, a friend ready to come to them and take them home. There is no need to drive and possibly kill an innocent person or child.

He only gets 20 years for killing another person. That is sooo wrong. A life for a life.. He should be in jail the rest of his life.
Twenty years isn't a short or trivial period of time. There is a distinction between a reckless act that results in death, as in this case, and between someone deliberately setting out to murder another person. That is reflected in the sentence.
@@simonw1313 doesnt matter imo. 20 years is trivial compared to taking an entire lifetime away from a young person. Someone took drugs deliberately and then proceeded to drive a deadly vehicle delibereately and then crashed and killed someone and u gonna sit here and say only the crash part wasnt deliberate even though everything else leading up to it was? makes no sense. if someone wanted to murder someone then just go drink and drive and run them over there u go easy loophole according to you cause if youre drunk then u cant deliberately kill people apparently.
@@sneakysquirrel4253 - yeah of course if you wanted to murder someone you didn't know and whose existence you probably weren't aware of you'd go out on the lash and then drive your car into the unknown persons house.
@@simonw1313 yeah and that's okay to you

Too drunk to remember his lies. Poor family of both the child he killed & his own. So many lives affected forever due to his selfish decision to drive drunk 😢
he says he’s hurting everywhere he would be really hurting if the dad of the teen girl he killed got hold of him
Then when the EMT got there to check him up and take him on ambulance he said nothing hurts 🙄
Attempting to do the field sobriety tests is really unnecessary in this case.
Not to the court, it’s not. You can’t assume he’s drunk, even if he looks it. You need to test and breathalyze.
They’re totally unnecessary in every case, since US law details don’t say “driving while cognitively affected by alcohol”. They say “driving with a blood alcohol content of > 0.08 (or whatever it is in that State)”. So considering roadside breath testing has been proven to be highly accurate at determining a preliminary BAC that provides grounds for a more accurate breath or blood test, the field sobriety tests are a complete waste of time.
I agree, just let him blow on the breathalizer , that says It all.
Its just protocol , but i agree just breathalyze him and get on with it
@@allisonjames2923 I want to point out that field sobriety tests are not designed to test the "sobriety" of an individual per-se. They are designed to make drunk people look as drunk as possible in court in front of a jury of non-expert witnesses.
If an officer is giving field sobriety tests to someone the officer already thinks they are drunk, and wants to arrest them. The whole procedure is for the science of getting a conviction, and you have to admit in this case watching the suspect completely bumble his way though what seem like simple trivial tasks really hammers home how SLAMMED faded he is.
Tragic this is why I always say Zero Tolerance for drunk drivers. He killed a little boy and injured another child. Always preventable SMH
It’s zero tolerance in az 🙏🏼
Did they ever tell him he killed a child? I would have told him and kept telling him the entire time to the station! 🤬🤬🤬
It's beyond infuriating that he DOES know that he killed a little boy and seriously injured another little boy and he has the audacity to act offended and ask in an arrogant tone, ( 10:50 ) "Are you guys gonna help me, or are just gonna ask me what hurts?" As first responders are right next to him working on the disaster he just caused and the death of a child. He has no decency or shame.
Anything less than burying him under the jail is a slap on the wrist. The reason this happens is because vehicular manslaughter is treated as an absolute joke by the injustice system.
DUIs where no one is hurt is treated as more of a joke with barely a single consequence. I saw a video with a woman getting 2 in one week and paid a fine and had her license suspended for 6 months. that's only the 2 times she got caught I'm sure

A lady killed 2 high school teenagers while texting and driving and got 24 years only 4 more than this guy while killing 2 minors. If it’s on accident it’s 3rd degree. they will not be charged as if it was premeditated or 2nd degree heat of the moment even if they were being negligent. His sentence is just if we’re going by the way handle other people in his situation, remember the punishment has to fit the crime, he was negligent yes and deserves punishment but it was mistake it’s not like he’s actually evil and planned to kill and or mass murder and yet I’ve seen comments that said give him life and the death penalty I was like wtf. Even mass murderers and people who kill there own family just barely avoid the death penalty no way an accidental negligent killing is warrant more than 20 years, which is not a slap on the wrist. First he looked around the area and started to wander off and then later he was in pain and needed the hospital so he could try to escape there. Then he thought he was going to be free so he then didn't hurt and worried about the cost. POS
He knows what’s going on! He trying to come up with a reason to be let go!!
They need to pay cops more to deal with such tragedys, takes a lot to keep situations like this in order and not feel the toll.
I'm glad he was held accountable and went to prison. This is absolutely pathetic
He’s going to jail for a long long time
He got 20 years
Not nearly long enough.
Drunk driving along with killing someone is life in prison right?
'Do me a favor' x10,000
He's going to be in his 40s when he get out. Still young enough to start a new life or... young enough to live his life and start drunk driving again. Meanwhile a family lost a kid because of him and his stupidity.
But old enough to have learned from his mistake and try to be a productive member of society. He won't just be released, he'll be on post release parole.
The law in the UK is different! He needs an ambulance. The bloods will show his alcohol level’s. Life ruined. A Family broken. The sobriety test seems impossible and police will be with him. Genuinely not sure if he has sustained a head injury. He keeps changing his story. The police officer is very patient.
thanks detective.
and over here in the UK he wouldn’t of got as long of a sentence either.
I’m guessing they will get his blood at the hospital. They would need his blood alcohol level to show he was driving impaired. They’ll get the blood.
If and I mean a BIG If he hit his head, that’s not the reason he can’t remember nor can’t keep track of his many stories, that’s called high BAC! He literally can’t tell the officers anything(nor wants too) and that kind of head injury, you would see some type of head trauma on the outside. This is alcohol all the way!
This makes my blood boil. I'm literally shaking with anger as I watch this. It's infuriating that so many people still choose to drive drunk knowing it puts other's in danger. Disgusting.
What is being blacked out?
Being in a different state of consciousness, with no recollection of events the next morning. For example, one could get so drunk, go into a complete rage and murder someone, and not even remember why or how it happened the next morning.
Basically your mind blocks it out so you don’t remember. That’s all.
Oh, Jesus…you’re talking about the footage…
The rest of the crime scene.
@@joshuaDstarks 😂😂😂 yep
Praying for the family who lost their poor child.
I hope the gods or fates make sure he never enjoys a second of his pathetic existence. My sincere condolences to the family. RIP.
Why do you keep blocking nothing ????
I don't have and will never have any compassion for people who drive drunk. RiP baby boy. Prayers for his family and friends.
Only 20 yrs ?!!! 😡
DO THEY EVER TELL THE SUSPECT THAT HE KILLED SOMEONE??
I've seen little kids with better acting skills than this guy. When he realizes what he has done he will b in a great deal of pain
No he won’t
he’s so unaware of what’s happening . So sad.
