What a super performance - nice to see a lady director of music which would have been unheard of in my time in the Queen's Bays let alone female members of the band

This is one superb march and should be played more often.
It's a really catchy tune and I could listen to this time after time.
Extremely well played ..... Well Done the British Army Band, Colchester.

British Army Band Colchester exists because the following three bands no longer exist: Band of the Queen's Division, Band of the Parachute Regiment, Band of the Army Air Corps.

And what about royal artillery, REME and a few more that have been disbanded - such a shame!

Agreed, watching the above performance (which I enjoy), there is a VERY big elephant in this room.
Indeed, please recall that the Queen's Division Band itself was formed out of 10+ bands or something in the further past.
Remember that we not only had Regimental Bands, but bands at the level of the Battalion at one point!!!
Of course, anyway, as you imply, the Queen's Division has nothing whatever in common with Paras or AAC...
Well, things change always and we live on and live with, but this change was mainly achieved during the pandemic and I do think a lot of people have no inkling that bands we have known forever (even the Royal Artillery ones - the oldest of all) have gone.
BTW, I have it on pretty good authority that this generic band with its generic name and generic uniforms can if necessary appear in Para uniform?
      Is this so?
      Maybe you know?
At Her Majesty's funeral (where ALL the bands acquitted themselves wonderfully in a musical/spiritual sense, and I will defend "to the death" that contention) the generic British Army Bands wore those red uniforms (traditional colour, but still looks a bit like a kind of "Town Band" - and worse when they started off with brass only - perish the thought!)
I know of certain units in certain countries (not bands) that can even choose on a given day whether they appear in Army, Navy or Air Force uniform.
Seems to defy the point of the whole exercise, really - does it not?
And BTW part 2, to the best of my knowledge the drums and cymbals of British Army (old-style) bands NEVER had the names of the manufacturers visibly on them (though bands from other countries and civilian bands quite often did - as could be seen, e.g. at the Ed Tattoo).
These players have that and it is a VERY negative step - making everything MUCH less special ... as in fact befits the situation.
The drum in particular is not just another instrument, it symbolises the formation/unit, and since this formation/unit has no substance/spirit (to be honest, as we need to be), the bass drum visible at 1:25 is non-ornamented.
But we CAN see manufacturers' names.
      SAD

Yes, it's a disgrace that the pennypinchers at MOD / Treasury cannot see how important Military Bands are for troop morale and the general public.

Lots more besides: this is from Wiki and shows which bands were made up of components of other bands, plus others that still exist: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_bands_of_the_United_Kingdom

My late father used to be the Band President in Arborfield. He was OC TRG BTN & Depot (Rowcroft BKS). His name was Major J.C Derricutt and I loved listening to this. Great to see ladies in the mix also! Arte et Marte xx

Very nice. Good that they've kept the traditional woodwind section, which I think makes for a better sound. Pity though the names of the new bands are a bit uninspiring!

That is the most honest thing about the whole change we've gone through in this rather hidden way.
They are "British Army Bands" because that is all they can be, under the circumstances.
There has long been (since '64) a New Zealand Army Band, for example...
Of course, the New Zealand Army is 6000 personnel in a country with a population about 7% of ours.
Not taking anything away from NZ - they have increased defence spending, and do help train the Ukranians in the UK...
With time we will adjust to thse things, and when all is said and done the two words "British Army" has a power for many of us, and always will (depleted though the strength is right now).
But ... things are NOT as they were, and it seems to me this was done while we had better things to worry about - like whether or not we would die or be debilitated thanks to COVID.

01:32 Are Freemason rings part of the band uniform now?
It feels like the audio was recorded separately to the video, is this the case? Purely out of curiosity

Notice that each bandsman wears earplugs to protect their ears from damage. If you are constantly exposed to loud music, you get tinnitus and then if not treated well, eventually you get Noise induced hearing loss which isn't good for your health. I'm glad the authorities pay attention to the importance of the health of their musicians.

Beautiful video: brilliant interpretation in a magnificent setting👏🏼. Certainly uncultivated question on my part: what do musicians have in their ears, headphones and why?

Sound cancelling earphones. I play piccolo which, especially when surrounded by brass, is quite damaging to your ear drums.

@@samclifford-hassan3584 ok, I thought that was something in this hearing protection. Thank you very much Sam Clifford-Hassan for your response and all the best for the rest of your musical career🎶
