Can You Use Keyboard/Guitar Amps With Edrums?

  • Alot of electronic drummers like to use amps. In fact it's the first and only thing they think of. And as you start doing your research look at various edrum amps looking at Roland/Simmons/DDrum/Yamaha some guys have asked about alternatives to straight up edrum amps. Guys ask me if they can use their Fender amp for their TD11k or whatever, and I say yes you CAN. But you shouldn’t. Guitars play in a different frequency range than a drumset. A drumset covers EVERYTHING. The cymbals cut through some very high frequencies,
(up to 17k HZ). While the Kick drum is basically the reason Sub-woofers exist. (100 Hz). So There is a wide range of sound your amp needs to cover. The Best case scenario is to use a PA system with a Sub-woofer, but not everyone has the money, or the space for that. Guitar amps just won’t cut it. Edrum amps generally have a range of tweeters, a sub, and some mids to cover everything your drums throw at it. But there is another option alot of drummers don’t know about, KEYBOARD AMPS! Keyboards cover most of the frequencies that drums do, so the goals of keyboard amps and drum amps align beautifully. If you have one lying around, don’t be afraid to plug it in, and jam out. Sometimes a Keyboard amp will be more cost effective than a drum amp, and have more ports on it to connect multiple instruments to boot. It’s definitely something to think about. One popular amp is the Roland KC 150. Believe it or not, Roland actually uses the same internals for some of their edrum amps, and keyboard amps. They are priced lower differently because Roland has already established an expectation in drummers that everything is expensive, but keyboardists aren’t buying that. So I’m not saying you need to drop everything and go buy one. I’m just saying it’s a viable option, especially if you already have one around and didn’t know if it would be a good fit with your electronic drumset.

I’m disabled and on a fixed income. I already have a two channel Fender Amplifier. I just want to practice around the house during the week. At the end of the week, I do play at our church service. Originally I had the Fender Amplifier that I plugged in my guitar. After my ruptured brain aneurysm and stroke of 2013, I lost most of my finger accuracy and control over the frets. But I’ve always had good rhythm so I put my Gibson J200 Dove off to the side. Now I’m learning drums. Your video was informative with what I needed to know. Have a blessed day.

I used 2 Peavey keyboard amps that were absolutely thunderous with my anemic-looking TD-7 (around 2000). It was actually funny the reaction in the audience because the combo sounded pretty heavy for such diminutive drumkit.

I've been using my Fender Mustang IV amp for my Roland TD11KV (with Apex V Expressions kits) e-drums for years. If you own a Fender Mustang IV amp, go to setting 83 - Basic Preamp. I keep my reverb and gain off and increase my bass + mids to 6.5-7. I run into the amp through the Aux input via a 1/4 inch to 3.5mm adapter. I've never had to put the volume over 3.5 - 4 when playing just the e-kit. I also play my TD11KV with real cymbals sometimes (hi-hat, 2 crash cymbals, 1 ride cymbal) and I only have to slightly bump the volume up to about 4.5 - 5. I've played the Simmons DA200S in stores and from my experience, the Mustang IV is just as good or better.
I'm sure you can get better low end with a high quality PA + subwoofer but the Fender Mustang IV is comparable or louder than any drum amp currently available on musiciansfriend. They don't make them anymore but you can find used ones for around $300 - $500. I should also mention that I play guitar so I get my moneys worth out of the amp.

I was looking at the Kat, but your videos and the sampling ability to use my own organic sounds steered me in the direction of the Alesis. Any recommendation of kick and hi-hat pedals that I might add to this to complete my tiny kit idea? Keeping budget in mind if possible. I’d love a real kick pedal style one to make it feel more natural but so far they seem pretty expensive.

For those of you on a budget, peavey makes a multi instrument amp called the vypir. It's made to play guitar, acoustic, bass, and keyboards through. If it can handle all the highs of guitar and keyboards plus the lows of a bass it should be able to handle the e-drums. If your just using them to practice at home and volume is an issue then your probably not looking for anything to gig with at high volume. It should be fine for practice in your room, home. The 20 watt version is under $100. Just another option for people on a budget that don't want to spend a couple hundred dollars on a drum amp or p.a.

I came here to say that I have bought a cheap (although somewhat sought after) 80s/90s Roland Cube-60 Keyboard amp to drive my e-kit. I was quite disappointed. However, I tried my bass amp (Boss Katana 60) and after some tweaking it sounds AWESOME. It's mainly because it has a tweeter which helps a lot. Not ideal, but if you have a bass amp with a tweeter give it a try! It won't break the amp like with guitar amps.

true, but I hope one day drummers will understand that is not just about frequencies and volume, but it's also about how the cab and the speaker are going to sound. See how guitarists are picky about cabs? Why? because what colour the sound is not just the driver size, the amp, brand etc, but it's also how the cab is built: the size, open back or not, wood choice. All these things are going to colour your tone.

Some bass guitar amps can do the job. There are very transparent examples around, which are more PA systems. A PA would be better, but if you have one around or can get one really cheap, that is worth a try. But that does not work for all. Some go 'only' down to 40hzh and not beyond 4k.

I'm using a Lab Series L5 for a drum monitor. Using a D. I. I split the signal to a monitor amp (Lab ) and to the P A. Cause every player has to hear what they're doing. I got a keyboard amp but only 2 channels and have 2 board going through. Again also as a monitor for the player and split to the P A. Depending on the situation also. If it's feasible with just put these amps towards the crowd. Everything has to equal volume to mesh together.

Great vid. Everybody turn down the drums, louder is definitely not better and it won't make you sound or look like a rock star, distortion is not a drummers friend. Also the other band members ears will love you for it, and your own ears will to, Oh and so will the neighbors, Mine have been ringing since 1978. Bass amps work fine unless you want to pissing off the neighbors and so do keyboard and guitar amps, the key element is a 12 or 15 with a tweeter or horn and an EQ. or at least low, mid and high knobs. The secret for bass drums and toms is the woofer and the bigger the better. The secret for snare and cymbals is the Tweeter or horn. Don't waste your money on a 8 or 10 inch woofer period. P.S. turn them down and tell everybody else in the band to turn down to.

Hey 65 Drums- Good info, which BTW I've also been telling many e-drummers for years.
I purchased my first Roland TD-10 Concert V-Drum Kit in 2002, same kit and same time as Neil Peart of Rush.
I had Yorkville Powered Speakers NX25P and NX550P that I used from my PA System. The NX25P's didn't do the job for my outdoor gigs but the NX550P's are holding their own and do a good job, but not really the right frequency range, plus they were a bitch to haul to and from gigs. So, I've recently purchased the Traynor DW10 200W edrum amps and have used them on recent outdoor stage shows. The great thing about the Traynor DW10 is the DI Output to PA and if needed in those cases I turn the Traynor DW-10s around as monitors. There are 3-channels and in stereo. I've cranked them up at live shows with my latest Roland TD-25 Kit and they have handled the bass very well.

I use a cheap 5.1 surround sound speaker and subwoofer combo lol. It’s so trash but when you crank it to the max and blast double pedal it definitely makes for an atmosphere when the sub and 5 speakers all blowing out haha

Could I use a drum amp for a Roland V-Drums TD-1DMK Drum Set? It doesn't seem to have an output on the module to accommodate the larger jack size. Or can I use an adapter?

They work great too. But they don't have enough bass in most cases. So you'd want to pair them with a sub as well

Hi, thanks for your videos, they have really helped me choose which kit is best for me. I also play guitar, and I have been looking online for an amp that has both drum and guitar compatibility. I haven't managed to find anything, I'm not sure it even exists. Are you aware of any? Thanks

A guitar amp usually is expected to do well with significant distortion/overdrive. That cranks out an unusual amount of high frequency that tends to be bad news for dedicated tweeters. So many guitar amps make do well without separate tweeters and go through a single speaker, making for a coherent distorted sound that does not cause thermal problems for the single speaker. But that tends to be bad news both for the low frequencies you want for kick drums as well as for the high frequencies you want for the cymbals. Bass amps tend to be a better match for your common purpose but may well be worse suited for lead guitar use, particularly when you want to go for heavy distortion. And you do need to check whether they do your cymbals justice. Acoustic/clean guitar amps may also be worth looking at.

Okay... I'm back. This hit the mark: BINGO! I have a Roland keyboard (even though guitar is my primary instrument) and I've always played it through my studio monitors via a Mackie Mixer (because I already owned that combo.) Recently, I got my hands on a Roland TD-11k and couldn't get the sound I want from the same combination. So, I started searching for drum amps... and stumbled upon the idea of getting a keyboard amp.
You helped my decision congeal: Keyboard Amp for both my Keys and my new e-drums!!! Thanks so much. Peavey KB-5... here I come!!!!

My td-25 sounds great on my roland rh-300 headphones. However, it sounds absolutely horrible on the roland pm-10 amp. Is the simmons drum amp significantly better?

Great info man, actually I jumped last night for bargain on a Peavey KB100 amp, pretty similar to yours! How do you set it up?? I'm not sure if should connect it directly from the mono output of the module or maybe have a little mixer in between to refine the eq. My kit is a Yamaha DTXpress 4 Special v2.

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  6 лет назад

I'd use a little mixer. EQ can dramatically increase the quality of your sound :)

Thanks for this. I read and watched videos that said if you a guitar amp, the amp will break because of the frequency difference. I have a Roland cube 20x, for my guitar but I am worried if I use it, it will break with my drums. No, I cannot afford a keyboard or drum amp, so I am stuck with headphones. I was surprised when you said you can use a guitar amp for drums though.

Down here hardly any store sell drum amps at all, so if you ask for one chances are they will offer you a keyboard amp or a PA instead. Of course the biggest downside of a keyboard amp is that most of of them are bigger and heavier than drum amps.

Seems the keyboard amps aren't as inexpensive anymore. A comparable Roland amp for keys is actually 50 to 100.00 more than the drum monitor. Can something like a Klipsch Promedia 2.1 speaker system be used if not planning to use at full volume? I understand that it might be a short lived relationship.

Hi, i have an band, and we probably coming back playing this summer, and im the bass player of the band. But our drummer bought and EDrum, the rest of the band want me to buy a Subwoofer called: “Qsc ks118 3,600w 18” so we could both plug in our instruments, witch will be: eletric bass, and eletric drums, all at once.
Do you think that this won’t be bad for the amp? Or is it totally okay? And the amp won’t suffer any damage overtime at all? Thank you very much 🙏🏼
