Sour Crop and Tough Decisions

  • If you have chickens for any length of time, there may be a day where you run into a case of "Sour Crop" in one of your birds. This video documents what I did when I discovered one of my girls was ill. Unfortunately, she was also egg bound as well. It was a tough afternoon but as homesteaders, this is one of those things that we have to consider. I hope that you never have to deal with this and that if the day comes and you have to treat a bird with Sour crop, your outcome is better than mine. Blessings
*Warning, I do gag a bit and there is some vomiting in this video (the chicken, not me). Sorry.

As hard as this video was for you, it helped me to feel better about my chicken. She had sour crop and I tried massaging her crop and a bunch of fluid came out. And the next thing I knew, she flopped over and died. I felt so bad.

Almost the exact thing happened to my Sussex. Quit owning dogs, because of the end- didn’t think losing a chicken would be as bad- but it is.

@@tanishkavalavala1891 Sometimes there's nothing you can do. A chicken will eat something that clogs her up like grass clippings. Turning her upside down is a technique of last resort. Sorry for your loss.

One of my girls had this, I tried everything, but she was dying, I couldn't watch her suffer and it broke my heart to put her down.

I'm sorry. That's an unfortunate outcome. Aren't you supposed to tip them forwards like a tea kettle during/after the massage so that the crop can drain? Since they can't throw up. Most of the videos I've seen do the massaging combined with tipping forwards but give them breaks from the tipping so that they can breathe.

Thank you for this. I am dealing with this currently. She is my girl that I have had for almost 9 years, yesterday morning demanded to be handfed as usual and then i noticed her crop was bigger than normal. I have been massaging and giving bits of coconut oil but feel I will give her one last snuggle and end her suffering. It is heart breaking. Thank you for showing the heartbreak that you went through while trying your best to help her.

I thought you held them head down to empty the crop? I just lost 2 in 2 days. Both crops would fill up fast. I did the on bird this morning and it died. I don't know if ours are/were egg bound but they mad a lot of noise when laying.

I am 6 months into my first chicken layers in central Texas with more than 65 days of 100° plus. Twice have had over heating and appear to have saved both with gradually giving cool and colder water to bring body temp down. Isolated over night she flew to her sisters. Noticed the most aggressive hen attacked her. Maybe mean hen fought her causing heat stress. The violent hen found a new home outside chicken tractor. She will be adopted out to a new home. I put ice in a dog dish in the morning and frozen water melon rine in late evening.

Chickens don't throw up. She was so backed up that it all leaked out. You don't massage it up either. That causes them to aspirate. Usually they are dying at that point. Make sure you're giving them grit and that won't happen.

I'm so sorry. I hope this will help if you have another case. Please look into using Colloidal Silver to treat your girls. Just a little in the water for your girls will stop the sour crop. It kills all the yeast and helps there overall health. She isn't hurting anymore, Don't feel bad you only wanted to help. Much love you and your family

Use a little Vicks vapor rub under you nose when you have terrible smells, it really helps
