- Is the way we instinctively approach Scripture hindering our understanding of it?
John Mark Comer and BibleProject scholars Dr. Tim Mackie, Dr. Brittany Kim, and Hakeem Bradley discuss the nature of Scripture and some of the reasons we might have a complicated relationship with it.
Common paradigms for approaching Scripture that many of us take for granted - such as the “reference book” approach, the “domesticated grab-bag” approach, and others - can impact our understanding and enjoyment of this complex library of texts.

The following episodes won't come fast enough. Great conversation!
Thanks for saying that, Madonna!
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! So pumped. Am a longtime fan of BP…I cannot understate what an impact BP has had on my interaction with the Bible…on my life really! Yes, I’m gushing…time to stop. I’m just excited. Yeshua is on the move!
Love the discussion! JMC, TIM - you’ve helped me know end in approaching scripture through your writings, One reflection, I found it interesting how your semi-criticism of the use of creeds and confessions as an introduction to scripture or how they make scripture ‘ a reference book’ in the early stages of the video (without distinguishing between good and bad usage of the creeds and their historical purposes e.g defining orthodoxy / heresy) was articulated but the very positive reflections on the ‘7 pillars’ about scripture that the bible project produced because they are helpful for making explicit what they have assumed implicitly in their teaching and thus help us understand scripture better and what it teaches…perhaps I’m missing what they were saying but thought that was interesting if nothing else… besides big fan of bible project, helped me no end 😊
I am hungry for more! Give me a second helping fast, please
As a follower of Jesus who takes the Bible VERY seriously, but has deep questions about the “literality” forced upon it by many others who also take it seriously, this is so refreshing. Thank you! Grateful for Bible nerds like you!
These are going to be wonderful, I can't wait for the rest of the episodes! ✝
I cannot thank y’all enough for this video. This is a super helpful idea: We don’t need to be afraid of discussing and debating the theories for how God put together the canon of Scripture! That’s because He oversaw the entire process.
What a blessing!
So basically it’ll take a lifetime and more to really understand and connect to these words
That's part of the beauty of it. There's so much depth to Scripture.
Thank God for some many like Tim Makie and the BP who have come before us in deep meditation and connection to scripture. They walk so we can run
Thankful
25:30 the first place I find this reading and explaining/understanding reality is in scripture itself - Neh 8:8
Wow, how interesting!
Brilliant, thank you!
I relate to the black guy.
The key to understanding the liturgy and sacraments are all covered in this discussion. In fact Christians have been interpreting the Bible similarly for 2000 years.
Reading a SHORT book, super cheap by Rowan Williams “Being Christian: Baptism, Bible, Eucharist, Prayer.” His chapter on Bible is super duper helpful, ties in with baptism, communion, and prayer, in light of the the grand unifying doctrine of Father-son-holy spirit as the meta. Lots of helpful intro to Cassian, Gregory and Origen who struggled and leave us their story.
Can anyone tell how they amplify their voices? I can't see any microphones.
The work of the Holy Spirit 😄….Had the same thought though!
I guess I live a sheltered life I had never heard the term “post Bible Christian” 😂
You and me both
Not just you
15:18 first question
The new Martin Luthers dont post 95 theses to the church door of Wittenberg, they post 7 pillars on the internet!
😆
God creates covenant, not order!
I really love that you put focus on the God-human interaction in creation and throughout the Bible and in that way point out that the "image" (tzelem) in practice is a co-image of the invisible God and the visible and physical human representing him. The image is not the image of God only, but of God in his human imagebearer, and thus, this image is "our image", as it represents an "us". Christ is of course the ultimate image of the invisible God as Paul says in Colossians 1:15.
I do not agree with your closing remarks. Genesis 1 - as well as the entire Bible, new and old testaments - is not focused on creating order of chaos, but rather in creating unity between the Creator and creation. As you spoke about beautifully in this session, God want to dwell in humanity as his house, his temple, his body, bride etc. Thus, as N. T. Wright keeps saying in his book "Paul", the twin theme of Paul is creation and covenant. God creates not because he is frustrated with disorder, but because he loves his creation and wants to enter into covenant with humanity. The problem is not chaos, but the enmity against unification with God found within every human being. This enmity against the one sent from God to consummate this covenant is what Psalm 89 termes "the proud sea" and the sea monster Rahab (which also means proud).
I hope you take this in the best meaning. Please ask me if what I say is unintelligible! All the best, Svein (from Norway)
