David seemed to be a sweet guy but he gave some of the all-time worst contestant answers I've ever heard. It's a miracle he kept winning and that he made so much money. More power to him - I hope he and is bride-to-be had a great honeymoon trip on that prize money and continue to enjoy happy years together.
H/H match update: ... ~~~Today's action: Our champion won his third game (thanks to George's "Drinks") as time ran out yesterday, so we kick off today's show with the Super-Match... *Today's audience match question: "Hey________"* (My thoughts: Jude, Good Lookin', Hey Hey) The celebs: Lee (Rube), Richard (There), George (Good Lookin') The choice: There The answers: Jude, You, There Our champ has chosen Richard twice so far and matched once, so there's little suspense as we wait for his choice today. This is now King Richard's 21st consecutive time answering the head-to-head question. He's matched seven of those 21 times so far. Stats: Richard has matched 94 of his 226 most recent attempts (41.6%), 77 of his last 183 attempts (42.1%), 33 of his last 86 attempts (38.4%), and 14 of his last 42 attempts (33.3%). His overall success rate is *41.5%* and this is his 704th attempt so far. For the sake of comparison: George has matched both of his 2 attempts, Betty has matched 19 of her 38 attempts (50.0%), Charles has matched 33 of his 69 attempts (47.8%), Brett has matched 30 of her 70 attempts (42.9%), and Richard has matched 292 of his 703 attempts (41.5%). Lee Meriwether has answered one H/H question without matching. *Today's H/H question: "________Wrench"* (An easy one today! "Monkey" wrench! But then I thought coast "guard" was the definitive answer yesterday, but neither one said it.) Richard contemplates only a couple of seconds before beginning to write. He glances over at Betty as he finishes up and confidently files his card. Our champion quickly answers "nut" wrench. (What?) The audience groans, apparently shocked that the obvious answer wasn't given. The champion adds some unexpected (and unintentional) humor when he explains to Gene that a "nut wrench" is a "wrench that goes around the nuts." Richard is failing at holding back a chuckle. It's pretty obvious we won't see him holding up "Nuts," so the only remaining question is: "Monkey"? Monkey indeed. No H/H match today. ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). Fannie - 48.3% (14 wins in 29 attempts). Charles - 47.8% (33 wins in 69 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 42.9% (30 wins in 70 attempts). Richard - 41.5% (292 wins in 704 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1057, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
What about "Hey JUDE" that had been out only a few years before? Or was that not a big enough hit to register on the stars? They kind of seem surprised, but I think I am the one who is surprised...Gene knew right away it was a song from only a few years before. He never seems to know these things.
The good ol' days...the trope: when a woman shares story of her abuse, a listening managers opportunity and tries to lure vulnerable woman to his lair, and another person doubts the veracity of her story.
I've watched every show starting with MG 73. When lady contestants said they were nervous Gene would tell them to hold his hand, and joke about getting excited, etc. The contestants would appear creeped out or uneasy - same with the kiss and mouth spray gag for newcomers. Were they uneasy, or am I just reading too much into it.
It's not like Gene went around kissing every woman he ran into on the street or something. It was an act, (not that he didn't enjoy his job), and all in good fun. And he was married. People take it far too seriously. It's made- for- tv fun. And both the female contestants, as well as panelists, knew about this beforehand. Mainly it's about the times being more relaxed, then, too.
Doubt they were uneasy if they knew about what he does before even appearing on the show. There a few of them that didn't get kissed, so they probably told him not to do it before appearing.
exactly! richard misses the head to heads more than he matches on them. it only seems like hes good because hes picked 5-6 times a week and he usually gets 1 or 2 of those matches
That's actually 100% correct! Charles and Brett both gave the most correct answers. saint Richard messes up WAAAAAY too much, so no of course I don't feel bad for the contestants when they lose with him!
there were 14 episodes with the show running from Sept. '77-Jan. '78..but it's been a long-standing way of luring an audience by referring to a new show as a hit..i don't know how many times i saw or heard that only to have a show GONE within the next week or two..Barbara Rhodes' ''Busting Loose'' series also had a short life - longer than BW's show with 21 eps...her appearance on MG was a plug - that, apparently, didn't work...
@@dannyhill8797 Betty White was on MG way before she got on the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Her BW Show wasn’t on till after the MTM Show ended. Three different shows during different periods

He and several of the contestants before him gave such poor answers that it seemed purposely done.
8:35 I liked how Lee said arm when she was lifting it up 😁

No one came up with my answer to the frogs' legs question: The restaurant was so sleazy, the frogs' legs had fish-net stockings!

Back in the 70's the older generation was still making every effort to ignore rock.
@@marvinmeeker5765 Yep, I think the Beatles, Iggy and the Stooges and Captain Beefheart all sounded basically the same to them
Think of the average age of them. The song was a big big hit
"Hey Jude" came out in 1968 so 9 years as of 1977
My mom used to order the frog legs back then at nice restaurants
Good point Betty White made on that. Thumb tack answer.
So many "Dorothy Hamill" haircuts on the lady contestants. I remember those days.
Wow David is a tall guy!!
George Kennedy looked 50 for 54 years.
Free spirit flying again! ;0)
Where is davis zive or is his last name spelled differently
This was a particularly funny episode. 😃
They were super quiet while answering the banister question.
Seems that a high percentage of the contestants on this show were young married women with two kids...
Is it only me, but I don't find Gene pushing David away when he was trying to kiss Lee, funny. And it was at Richard's suggestion.
She’s from....Corona 😳
Guy should have done that old man gag all the time.
Darlene was beautiful.
Beverly pomerantz (s)
"Nut wrench!" I expect he'd call a pro WHENEVER he needed repairs. Definitely not the DIY type.

Anyone else think this tall contestant looks a lot like the futuristic creatures in the movie "The Time Machine"?
Troglodytes
Like a cross between Morlock and Eloi
david's fattening up a turkey for another man's table..lmao...that woman never married him. she dumped him after the trips.
I tried googling her and there was no matching of him and her
David has to be the worst player in Match Game HISTORY!! (and yet he still keeps wining)!
David was handsome but dumb
Krista where is David?
