  • When exploring the great outdoors the one thing we take for granted is water. Staying hydrated is not as simple as drinking straight from streams and lakes. To protect against protozoa, bacteria and even viruses there is a wide range of water filtration and purification systems built specifically for backpacking.
In this video we are going to look at the different ways and methods for treating water and find one that will work best for you.

I saw this clip months ago and I was really impress. But I was really busy trying to get some stuff done on a deaditline. I meant to come back to it and bookmark it but somehow the RUclips search algorithm would not bring it up. I just stumbled onto it this time. VERY clear, concise, comprehensive and to the point. I like clips like that. OH and NO ADVERTS other than the RUclips required ones. I REALLY like that.

I use a Cnoc 2L dirty bag and a Sawyer Squeeze with a cleaning coupler to attach to a standard water/soda bottle.
Works great as a gravity system if you hang it from a tree or your hammock suspension, and you can also use it as a squeeze through system.
The cleaning coupler makes for very easy backflushing as well!
    Great video, thank you!

I have the same, but added a convirtube that threads onto the same daze water bottle threads and allows me to use that water bottle as a water bladder while hiking for ease of access. I tend to drink a little more from a water bladder and stay better hydrated.

Thank you for not mentioning DIY water filters as a way to supply drinkable water.
So many videographers use DIY water filtration as click bait for views, not considering the possible consequences to campers experimenting with sand & stones to "purify" their bush water.
This was a well thought out and comprehensive approach to water purification out in the wilds.

As always, thank you so much for the excellent video! You gave us lots of choices for filtering/purifying our water safely.
Years ago, I was on a 3-week kayaking trip in Quetico Provincial Park when I contracted giardia from unfiltered water. I normally filtered all my drinking water but ran out while out on a short hike and took a drink from a cool stream. I'll ever do that again (severe stomach cramps and diarrhea for 3 days).
Today, my preferred method of treating water is catching particulates through a cloth kerchief then boiling. I carry a gravity filter or squeeze filter (Trail Shot Micro Filter), but these methods will fail if you haven't done the required maintenance. My least favorite method was using iodine tabs which affected the taste too much.
Like you said, there isn't a perfect way to purify water, we have to weigh all the pros and cons and use a method that best suits our needs. Thanks again Marine!

When I first started to canoeing the BWCA and Quetico. We would never treat the water. My Grandfather would always travel in that area during the 20s through the 60s. Never got sick, not even once. Those where different times. Your method of boiling then straining it through a cloth kerchief, is probably the best and safest way. Thank you for sharing that P Arnold-Mora.

Our boy scout troop has used the UV-pens on trips to BWCA in the past. We went to Isle Royale this summer. On the boat over, the rangers told us that there is a tapeworm in the waters that those pens had not been tested against yet; they could not guarantee success and thus, did not recommend using them. I had a Sawyer Mini along and it made drinking from Lake Superior effortless. I suspect the tapeworm the rangers talked about would have been in more warmer, stagnant ponds than clear, 42 degree Superior. However, I know you've been to Isle Royale and thought I'd pass that tidbit along. Thank you so much for sharing all your information and experience!

Like you Greg. When on the Island. I would try to get my water from Lake Superior. Otherwise, from a spring creek. I like my water clean as possible and cold. Did not know about the tape worm. I wonder if they are from all the moose. Thank you for sharing that. And thank you for taking the time to take those boys or girls into the great outdoors.

Boiling water is the safest method. But the only time I will boil is to melt snow for water. But there are some areas in the world were I would definitely boil the water. After it cools down a little. Than I would filter it.

Also have their 5 gal bucket kit for base camp application. There are several good examples, on line, of how to add a DIY carbon filter, if desired, using activated carbon (used in aquarium filters).

Great info..one thing to consider when using a gravity system, is to leave a loop on the hose that you fill your bottles with...that's lower than the bottle is. So any unfiltered water on outside of the bag will drip from the loop, and not get in your bottle.

One point... viruses are generally not an issue in US but the exception is norovirus. This virus can affect water sources if humans have pooped (or vomited) close or into the water. If in doubt, filter and use chemicals/ultraviolet or heat treat. Away from places with lots of humans, not a problem.
Another point, heating to boiling is not essential to get a good kill of micro-organisms. Temperatures over 149 deg F can kill if held there long enough and if heated to over 163, takes little time for multiple log reductions in pathogens; the trouble is that judging pasteurization temperature in the field is not straightforward, need a water pasteurization indicator.

Regarding leakage from the wide mouth of the Cnoc (pronounced 'crohc'!) Vecto, one possible reason for this is folding the top of the bag the wrong way -it's easy to slide the seal across the top of the bag if it is folded in the wrong direction but it will leak.

Appreciate all your tips on choosing a water filtration system. Is it necessary to rinse the filter when you get home per outing? Like you mentioned using a scrubby? Would you ever filter twice or do you boil it first and that’s fine? Thanks

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  5 лет назад

When I get home from a trip. I will always back flush or clean or rinse the filter, depending on which one I use. Than I will leave it out to dry all day.To make sure it is completely dry. Depending on the water source and if there are any particles floating around. And if there is.Than I would filter boiled water. But when using a filer for treating water. You only need to filter once. It is funny that you asked that question. Because my son wanted me to tell people in the video about the time he was using a Steri Pen. During the day, with the clear water. After using the Steri Pen. The water looked great. But during the night, with the glow of the light of the pen. You could see all the little dead critters and particles floating around. Now he will only drink filtered water. I guess it scared him for life. Thank you for watching Alice G. I really appreciate it.

I think you put the CNOC water bag in the wrong category. I use it with a sawyer mini in a gravity system and the only squeezing I ever do is to push out the last bits of water left in the bag at the end. Technically, the sawyer mini is a drink thru filter, gravity filter, and squeeze thru filter, depending on how you deploy it. So I think that classifying filters like this is a waste of time, since they have effectively become all-rounders. I believe it is either pump or non-pump. More often than not, lazy or otherwise, the intelligent person will eventually use a gravity system, or at worst, a squeeze thru system if they are totally anal about the extra weight they are carrying. I have used 2 pump filters and I can honestly tell you that they are a waste of time, energy, space, and weigh a ton more.
The lightest it will probably every get for a reliable system would be the sawyer mini with their proprietary squeeze bags. When you're so done trying to fill up those bags (and others with small inlet holes like it), you will get a CNOC (or something like it with 2 openings).
    Sawyer mini with syringe, 98g.
CNOC 3L (pre-2019 version), 92g. This bag is very long and can be a tad bit difficult to pack. I recommend the shorter 2L model for hikers.

Personally I haven't taken it camping yet, but the ability to filter water without boiling it, saves a lot of time and gas.
The fact that you can filter water in seconds is amazing. When I go camping, I bought some "filter socks", to filter out tiny sediments before filtering it through.
