Yup, but there's so much that people can't let all this stop them from getting in the RVs, vans and minivans. I've been thinking about a water filter system for the minivan I've been living in for two years. 😄
Re: the black carbon, that's activated charcoal, and it's what they give you in the ER to deal with poisoning. Not only is it safe, it's actually good for you.
Be careful not to let the filter freeze, as it will be ruined. I left mine in a shed between trips and it must have frozen - next time I went out there was zero flow. Luckily I had enough gas to boil water instead. That was an expensive mistake!
We sold our house and didnt find our dream house so 2 weeks ago we bought a 1966 17.5 ft Kenskill and we know absolutely nothing and are winging it! Just found you today so glad I did! Thanks for the info! Just trying to figure out the basic needs! ❤
Back-flushing the hollow reed filters should be done every other use for it to last. They clog fairly easily and ALWAYS have to be protected from freezing temperatures or they will FAIL. 🌿💦
the backflushing on this one is different than the Sawyers, etc... and much much easier, not that those are hard. Seems to good to be true, but I've seen the MSR website product demos and they explain it. Bob demonstrates the super simple process for flushing this MSR Guardian Gravity at 7:15 in this video, and yes, as Bob reiterates, it should be done each time, but unlike all the others I've seen, you just twist a valve.
Putting a water purification tablet in the filtered water would be a good idea. Best to use flowing water to fill the bag if possible. And having the bag in the sunlight is good to. Some nasty viruses are killed by uv light.
If I'm not mistaken Lifestraw has a setup where you can filter water into containers, but I could be wrong. The Gravity Filter looks really nice even if it is a little pricey. Keep the good stuff coming Bob.
Super informative! We use a Grayl Geopress and filter water into reusable bottles. Fresh water on the go can be very challenging in some areas - thanks for sharing! We are always looking for things to better our experiences in the van! Keep making memories & adventure on! ~Karen & Shannon WOY
Love the purifier. Currently have a Sawyer. I'd like to get the purifier in the near future. As with my Sawyer, I imagine you do NOT want to let any filter freeze as it will ruin it.
If you're really concerned, get a desalinator. The price goes up 10x, but nothing larger than an NaCl molecule can get through it. No viruses, prions, amoeba, bacteria, minerals, nothing. You actually want to add a little minerals back because otherwise the water can be so pure that it's not good for you. You also need to be careful not to use water with petrochemicals, or too much sludge in it. Prefilters are important.
"You actually want to add a little minerals back because otherwise the water can be so pure that it's not good for you." That's a persistent myth: Nothing wrong with "too pure" water (aka: distilled water) -- it's not going to hurt you at all. -- BR
@@billredding2000Well, you will get an electrolyte imbalance if you don't also supplement with the range of electrolytes your body needs to run your muscles and organs. I drank a lot of distilled water one morning, did some pretty intense work out in the garden, and then a couple hours later, I was suffering from debilitating muscle cramps until I drank some electrolyte powder from Costco mixed with a glass of water. Muscles calmed down in about 15 minutes after that.
@@billredding2000Correct. The only reason to add minerals back is for taste and if you're talking about a survival situation that's the least of your worries.

I have a military grade extremely fine water purifier that I take on kayaking trips and long river cruises etc. It is awesome EXCEPT it will clog VERY quickly if you put muddy water through it. So a lower grade pre-filter should be used to get 99% of the impurities out first THEN run it through the purifier. That way it will last for many thousands of litres of water.
If you have a dog, since they can’t drink through a straw, the filters that you have to suck through won’t get doggie a drink. I know they could drink out of stream but some places I’d want to filter out germs etc
I wouldn't try it! The filter would remove the algae but the algae would already have produced toxins. In public water treatment they have coagulants to remove such toxins, but that's not a home treatment. I believe the only methods we could use on the road would be distillation or reverse osmosis.
Yes, the cdc recommends boiling for 1 minute. It can be inefficient and inconvenient and of course uses the power source. I'm coming from a backpacking perspective. I've used a sawyer filter that claims a $30 -40 filter will last 100,000 gallons. It's only 2oz and can be set up as a gravity filter or squeeze a plastic bottle .... uses the same thread as most water bottles. It's time tested since thru hikers have been using them for over a decade. When I travel I carry a Katadyn befree that has a faster water flow but clogs up faster and lasts 1000 liters before changing the filter. I think wall mart carries sawyer.... I think there's a home version as well. One thing tho is they are ruined if they freeze. I'm not sure if his expensive one would be the same.
Boiling water will kill protozoa, bacteria and viruses. It won't do anything about most chemicals, eg agricultural pesticide runoff, industrial chemicals, etc. If those are a concern you could follow boiling with an activated charcoal filter.
Dude followed you for years. Been a van dude for almost 20 years. Listen stop. These new hobos have been ruining my way of life. BLM and rangers have cracked down on stuff. I got a huge fine for having "temporary housing"
The problem with the straws is what if you want water for cooking, freeze dried food, etc.
There’s so much to learn and consider before choosing the RV life on the road

Good idea to pre filter the water going into the bag with cheese cloth or the like. Keeps the really big debris from going into the filter.
There is a pre filter in bag
Backpacking thru hikers mostly take the Sawyer Squeeze (around $30), not to be confused with sawyer mini or micro.
Be careful not to let the filter freeze, as it will be ruined. I left mine in a shed between trips and it must have frozen - next time I went out there was zero flow. Luckily I had enough gas to boil water instead. That was an expensive mistake!
This is a very important subject that most people do not ever think about and I'm glad you addressed it.

Another great video! Thank you for taking time to do this 🎥 - Price of MSR Guardian is now $299 dollars

You should get some test kits to see how well they are filtering out the things that can harm you.
Backflush only with trusted water. Pre-filter water from a stream with a cloth and place open end of container downstream when capturing water.
There is a screen in the bag ( pre filter )
That backround is awesome. Going camping tomorrow. Cant wait.
MSR makes awesome things. I've had an MSR Miniworks water filter for 22 years now. Love it! It's absolutely bomb proof.
Very good demonstration and information Bob, thank you!

Much love to everyone and their families from Cedar City Utah USA currently 🤠💪🙏🏵️🤠
You shouldnt camp in southern utah unless you have read "Desert Solitair"
I love these informative videos, I've been thinking about getting a water filter system of some sort for my minivan. This helps a lot, thanks Bob.
3000 liters, just over 700 gallons. At 1/2 gallon for drinking per day it’s good for 4 years of survival.
It’s great for an outdoors lifestyle.
Would love to see a Berkeley type filter review… I don’t like dealing with bags

The MSR filter would definitely benefit people in New Mexico in certain places.

Great info Bob, as always thank you.
I bought a water testing kit including a bacteria test. It was expensive. I am curious. Is there a way to test for bacteria cheaply?
Thanks Abraham
I love heading for the high country for my water.

I WONDER IF THERE IS A STRAW TYPE WHERE A HOSE COULD BE PUT ON AND LET IT SYPHON OUT OF A 5 GAL BUCKET THAT IS FILLED FROM THE STREAM.
Thanks for the review
Will the more expensive filter remove salt from ocean water.
No. That process is called desalinization (sp?) and is a much more expensive and intensive process. But good question.
Okay when you get the water from the creek leave the the hose detached on the msr
Thanks for the demonstration on water filters.
Great information Bob!!
The smaller filters mentioned are ruined if they freeze... It appears the gaurdian cartridge my also need to be replaced. ...
I've been wondering about live action pumps with a screen over the hose, hooked up to my own filters
Like always, great advice. Thanks Bob!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT VID! THANK YOU
Thank you
Will these filters handle water from lakes that have blue algae blooms ?

I was taught to boil the water (then let it cool down) before drinking it, to purify it. Is that not safe to do?

Don't you need clean water to backfill? Are you using unfiltered creek water?
You reverse the flow to backflush, so you are using some of the clean water you just filtered.
I have all types of water filters I should be covered for everything including bacteria
Well done. Still looking to buy my first.
Very good video!, regards from México!.
Get a folding plastic step, And you can sit on your step stool and wash your hair, If you can't hang your bag too high
Smart.
The stats and lifespan on a Lifestraw suk compared to a Sawyer which is only a few dollars more. Backflushing.
Interesting thanks!

Thank you! Great information ❤
Bacteria is stopped by a 0.2 micron filter, some viruses are smaller than 0.2 micron.
How to keep water out of food in a cooler
It’s like watching Santa give a presentation, eh ?
Will these work with Giardia? Also, what's the deal with Berkey?
Giardia is bigger than bacteria and viruses, so yes it is filtered out.
👍👍👍👍👍👍

Be sure to keep those filters from freezing. It will crack the housing.
Just buy several bottles of store bought water before going on a trip.
