VERY TRUE ! During Hurricane Irma in 2017, much of Florida's electric grid was down. City water plants went down, and bottled water was stripped from store shelves the first day. Thankfully, we had saved water in old 1-gallon jugs. HOWEVER, the "outage" extended to 8 days - and our supply RAN OUT. Had to depend on my brother-in-law, whose community had a backup generator at their small private plant. SHOCKING how FAST your water runs out !

My dad help me make a filter using sand and rocks in multiple layers for a 3rd grade science experiment. I'm 39 now and have never forgotten that lesson.
I remember doing that when I was in 4th grade and then again in my AP Environmental Science class in High School. Definitely useful! I’ll never forget it.

@@woodsie5796 there is many different ways of doing it. But I like using this method. Use a container I like using a 2 liter bottle and cut the bottom off the bottle. Then holding bottle upside down put in medium size stones bigger than the opening of the bottle so nothing falls out. then as u go up in layers find smaller pebbles then sediment and sand if u can find it, and moss on top. U can actually make alternating layers between sand dirt and moss and small pebbles. And if u can, use charcoal in between those layers. U can get charcoal from a fire u made. Preferably hardwood if u can find it but anything is better than nothing.
My way is by no means the best way but it will be better than nothing. And remember the bigger the container and the more layers, the better ur water will be filtered. But I would still boil after if u can. If u can’t this is definitely better than nothing.
Pro tip. The charcoal makes the water taste a lot better. What I mean is, it tastes like normal water. Without it u might taste the earth. Hope that helps.

I learned from emergency personnel that go into disaster areas: after going hungry for a week, a person can smell even scented candles up to a mile.

I was in the Boundary Waters Canoe area with two brothers & our Dad early 1980's. One of my brothers was saying he didn't see the need to boil the water straight out of the lake. Just then a moose went swimming by & he reconsidered his choice.

My best friend's son drank lake water from a "clean lake" in northern ontario and almost died from beaver fever (beaver fesces) in the water. Always filter and purify any drinking water. Always.

If you have a well on your property, invest in a hand pump add-on! When the electricity goes out, its great to have a back up option!
Which pump do you recommend?
I’ve also been looking for one that can pump 100 feet. Today I’m installing a through the wall generator kit that can run my well and furnace or freezer.
Hand pumps are only good to around 35ft.

Agreed. Recently spent some time looking into this and realised that different approaches do very different things. I have an excellent mini UVC lamp, that is small, powerful and will even brown a banana skin. Im figuring out how to use filtration and then put the water in a steel bottle where I can give it a does of UVC.
You know your stuff, I only recently caught up with this stuff.

@@jakestevens7283 I have two. A 12inch strip lamp tube, which I think is for a terrarium or for fish tank cleaning or something. And also a little USB charged one. I will have to figure out how to modify these for use on some kind of steel container. I have never used a branded UVC sterilization method. Its worth noting that most of the "UV" lamps on amazon are fake. You need to look for one with a proper bulb of some sort. 99% of the LED lamps are just normal blue LEDs, NOT UV at all.
AvE does some excellent videos about them and the Banana Test. Basically if your UV light will turn a green banana skin to brown... then basically its the real deal.
I think that distilled water is the best filter there is. It is a purifier. You cannot get any better.

I think it's important to have multiple ways to obtain clean water.
I live in Texas, if the power goes down during the summer, just leave a pot of water in your car turned off, windows rolled up...I bet that water will be boiling in 10 min all jokes aside, people overlook the sun is an infinite amount of power. Just gotta know how to use it.
preferably a car with a sunroof would help ass more sunlight to your car.

I live in London. The water got cut off for a day where I live. I *thought* I had plenty of water until I was pouring 2 litres down the toilet to flush away shit, and another 2 litres in the sink to keep up a bowl of soapy water for cleanliness. I had about 8x5litre bottles in the place and realised that I would run out before the water authority would bus in water after 48hours.
I only thought of water in terms of drinking. But when we suddenly had ZERO water, I appreciated how you use it for everything.... cooking food, drinking, cleanliness, mixing with ingredients, and all the while the toilet was there .... stinking...and I would have to go and pour away a HUGE amount of water just to deal with faeces.
I thought I was prepared but I burned through about one third of my emergency water WITH society functioning and restoring the water within a day.
My takeaway is:
Stored water is not enough, you need ways to collect it.
The toilet is more thirsty than you, stop using it, piss in the toilet and shit in a bag.
What I say might sound unpleasant, but its more pleasant than pouring your water reserves down a giant porcelain bowl.
I'd just go outside and water the garden, you know, with my pee. Put a bag in the toilet, let 'er loose, and put the bag in your garbage collection for a temporary water shortage.
@@robertgaines-tulsa In the short term I reckon that is sound advice. For the record during the pandemic I stopped recycling bags for hygiene reasons. I bought sacks of 100x small poly bags from Amazon. Great investment. They cost practically nothing and following your advice, absolute win. Thank you
You don't need to flush after every pee just pour some bleach / Loo blu in and you don't need to flush ....only flush when you have a dump .
You save a ton of money as well because your water bills will be cut in half
Get a 5 gallon bucket and some sand, kitty litter, or sawdust to cover up. Shouldn't smell if you just cover the logs. Heck, if it's scoopable kitty litter, just scoop out the stuff every couple of days and reuse. Get a pool noodle for the rim of the bucket so it doesn't hurt to sit on it.
I've been using a cross cut shredder and I shred newspaper, ads, & cardboard packaging. I use the shreds in compost & gardening and am keeping several bags of shreds around for #2 compoo buckets.
During this last blizzard in Texas, when communication systems, electricity were all down. I drank the tap water one time. (Not thinking out of habit) Got really sick for a day. My kids were drinking juices. Husband drinking Gatorade Zero. I boiled water it still looked Yellowish after 2 minutes. They were telling people to boil it for 2 minutes when power came back on. I boiled it for 10 minutes then, let it cool, then ran in through a zero water filtration system. I have water wand tester that came with the zero water filter. That was very useful. But I did have water stored. Just enough for a week. But having something at hand to test water is not a bad thing to prep. I'm still working on my water preps. Thanks for the information. Thanks. Boiling time should be a rolling boil, not just boiling. Also, if using a backcountry filter, putting a piece of cloth or paper towel over the tubing that enters the water source can cut down on debris that exists in the source. Then the water can go through the filter a bit cleaner.

a couple of thought and tips that i have on this. when boiling water, it will kill the nasty bugs, but not clarify the water. prefilter it as best you can first. it can also help get rid of some volatile organic compounds due to the heat causing them to evaporate out of the water. and to make the water taste better after boiling, try pouring it back and forth between a couple of clean containers to add some oxygen back to the water. as for drinking water from a dehumidifier, remember that its not just water that is being pulled from the air, but also a lot of other nasty things that are floating in the air, so you will need to sterilize that water as well.
We always keep 50 gallons of water on hand, reverse osmosis on the kitchen tap with the 3 gallon back up tank, filters, purification tablets and a camping stove with 30 of the gallon cylinders as well as a fore pit for cooking outside. We had a hurricane growing up that flooded our basement, took out the power and water for 9 days. We were okay because my father prepared, but 3/4 of the town left after the 4th day in the dark. Will never forget it, so I always prepare. I assume that will happen again in my lifetime, since it has happened more than once. I refuse to not head rhe warnings of the past.

If you are one of the lucky ones that has water filters (sawyer, lifestraw, aquamira, msr) it’s important to remember one thing. If you use it, be careful so it doesn’t freeze. If the water that stays inside of it freezes it’ll expand the filter inside the system and make it a lot less effective at grabbing all the bad stuff as the water flows through it. Don’t let it freeze after using it people. Especiallly those of us who live in colder places who like to leave an emergency kit in the car or garage.
I remember a few years back here in the U.S., West Virginia ???, there was a chemical spill into the river which was the local water source. All residents were told Do Not boil the water because you will be concentrating the chemical.

Get a propane turkey fryer. It comes with a large aluminum pot.
Put up a piece of roof gutter on one side of a shed or shop building or on one end of your house. Put the leaf guard panels over the gutter to keep out most debris. Run the downspout too a rain Barrel.
The rain Barrel should have a piece of window screen tied over the top to keep out mosquittos and debris. Install a faucet About four inches above the bottom of the barrel. Set the barrel on blocks
So the faucet is high enough to set a 5 gallon bucket under it.
A few 20 pound propane tanks will boil water on the turkey fryer for several months.
If propane runs out remove the gas burner from the turkey fryer and build a wood fire under the pot to boil water.
These propane turkey fryers can be found used at flea markets and yard sales cheap.
I suggest that you get a big stainless steel pot because it will last much longer than some of the thin aluminum pots.
Have plenty of five gallon buckets.

I’ve had reverse osmosis/water softening systems in my homes since 2005. Love it.
I got tired of going to the supermarket to fill the 5 gallon jugs
Something I learned, the name brand systems like Culligan are over priced because they used a third party company to build their systems.
I found a company named WaterTec. They build and service their own systems and they are significantly less in price. Still not cheap, but affordable.
Desallinators and reverse osmosis are good for purification but they also run the risk, like the dehumidifier, of de-mineralizing your water. For those who dont know, there is nothing wrong with drinking chemically pure water as long as you supplement your mineral intake. "Empty water" tastes bad though. And if you drink it too long without getting your minerals, it thins out your electrolytes and can cause health problems, including mineral deficiencies.
And you can always re-mineralize your water, too. There are high-mineral salts you can put a pinch in, put some rocks and stones or clays in your water storage container, or even mineral drops you can get. If you have a bottle of energy drink lying around marketed for their electrolyte recovery, you can mix a fair amount into your water over time, stretching your healthy water supply. Alternatively, have mineral supplements in your stash. Pop a pill once a day or grind it up and mix it into your water.
Pink Himalayan salt.
87 beneficial nutrients and so forth, fully electrolyte laden.
I upend my barrels every month and when I open any I ensure I switch the water from one to another jug a few times to oxygenate it.
Only had to open one barrel in six years, due to contamination of the mains water supply by the water company.
My barrel water tasted tickety-boo. 👌
As a Contractor if you dig down far enough under your house (1-4ft might vary by location) you will notice water accumulate and always be there as the natural ground run off is always flowing. You can also scavange water from water heaters and your homes plumbing pipes if need be. If SHTF bad you can collect water from down spouts in bins. You'd be surprised how much water actually runs off your roof.
Yeah, that water that is at that hystatic line also has ground seepage. That means there is permeation from the surface level, which is a great way to be exposed to nitrates, coliform bacteria and e.coli. I'm in the water business. I can tell you 100% that shallow water can have a lot of crap in it especially in ag areas.
My aunt, whose job it was, always let the rain wash the roof off before she switched down spout directed rainwater into our underground cistern. It was scary twice a year to go down into the cistern and wash it's walls down with bleach.

I got a reverse osmosis machine several years ago. TIP: To get an RO system for dirt cheap, go to a fish store. To set up a salt water tank you need RO water and the chemicals to get the water where it needs to be for salt water fish. A good fish store should have RO systems that you can piece together for your needs. I paid around $240 for a 6 chamber system. It works exactly the same way as the "high end" brands.

We have 55 gallon drums under our gutter downspouts and it rains 60 inches a year here. No problem, right? Lol. We had an ice storm, regional power outages, and the water plants and towers failed for days. Our plastic water drums were frozen solid, nothing coming out of the tap though the drum was very full. In the future, I want at least 1 metal drum which we could light a fire under to thaw it. Lesson learned.

@@cyrusjulian187 Our water barrels are on the NE side of the house, so they only get sun in the early morning. I don't know how water can go bad. I plan to filter it through my sand filter, then through my Berkey filter, then solarize it after that, if necessary. I can't imagine any amount of sitting there making it so bad that I can't filter it for drinking and cooking. I'm in Louisiana, so yes, it was the same storm that got Texas. We had several gallons of clean drinking water stored in the house which didn't freeze, but for doing dishes, my sons and husband had to gather snow and melt it in our big crawfish boil pot on the propane burner outside. We had collected snow and ice in 5 gallon buckets and put them in the kitchen in the hopes that overnight it would thaw, but the house was so cold inside that it was still frozen the next day. We were only warm around the fireplace, and all the people wanted a spot next to the fire, so there wasn't any room for the buckets there. In the future, I'll make sure to have plenty of paper plates and plastic utensils so we won't need to do as many dishes, but we had to use pots to cook. Those had to be washed so we could use them again.

I had not ever thought of using the dehumidifier that I got for my RV as a potential water source. Thanks for the idea! Between my Berkey (which is one of my favorite things ever), the WAPI (water pasteurization indicator) that came with my Sun Oven, my ‘to go bag’ Sawyer Mini and small gasifier stove, I feel more secure knowing that should I need to create safe clean drinking water I am somewhat prepared. I have lived through several natural disasters and the need for clean water was early on put at the top of my preparedness list.

I'm a licensed water operator. Cleanliness is critical when preparing drinking water. Municipal water systems are highly regulated and generally safe. Yes, I know about Flint, and other cities. They make the news because they are rare. Also, the test results are public record.
One other thing. The smell we associate with chlorine at pools is not chlorine. It is the byproduct of chlorine killing contaminants. Properly dosed chlorine and a well built and maintained system should be odorless."

In regards to the ancestors that drank water from lakes and rivers and were adapt to the beasts back then, history actually indicates otherwise. An example that I read about is what transpired during the U.S. Civil War. It is now believed that somewhere around 50% of the casualties were from G.I. related issues only,; not from wounds of war. It is theorized that water sanitation, or lack of, was the main cause of the fatalities in that category.
That intro was brilliant,I laughed so much as you nabbed my Sarah Conner fantasy right out of the ether and crushed it....
If you really want simple water filtration, get a Sawyer Squeeze or a Sawyer Mini. These are hollow fiber filters that filter bacteria (not viruses). And can do up to 10k gallons of water each. And the best part is they screw onto a standard water bottle. So dip your bottle into the water, put the Sawyer on top and drink. No fuel needed.
The best part is they are fairly cheap at around $20. This means you are filtering clean water for less than a penny a gallon. Seems like a no brainer to me.
As a bonus, most Sawyers are configurable to filter 'in line' as well and so you can screw them into a filter system like a camel back bag, and you can add in other items like a charcoal filter to help eliminate chemicals and improve taste.
Sometimes they clog up or freeze in cold weather and become useless. Have to maintain them and let them dry out and keep them in a dry warm place
As a matter of fact, pirates are exactly the problem I am facing right now, but my area has not yet submerged so I guess I will wait on buying the reverse osmosis filtration contraption and continue straining water through Clorox wipes. It's an acquired taste. Keep up the good work, CP.

I am working on a primitive survival guide so I just use this set up: A barrel, bucket or pot, with a hole in the bottom, filled with cloth of any kind. I prefer synthetic fluffy pullovers, they have more fibers to catch onto stuff! Alternatively: Towels. Just fill it up. The water gets filtered and then you can cook that to purify. Simple and effective enough. At least for me.

I have had distilled water for a very lengthy period of time. I did not have any problems for lack of minerals. The needed minerals I got came from my food.
I read that distilled water removes the "bad" minerals and leaves the good...been drinking only distilled water for a few years and no more throat irritations and such that I used to get with most tap waters.
You can think whatever you want. I do not think it was the removal of ''bad minerals.'' The distilled water was sterilized by boiling in the distillation process and killed the bacteria that was causing your sore throat problem.
True distilled water should not be for drinking...see the label. It causes hemolysis of your red blood cells...destroys them. Look it up.

Just got a Royal Berkey - it is everything they say it is. Filter tap water and it completely changes the taste by removing the chemical residues. Worth every cent.
Your timing is perfect, I have come to realize that bleach is heavy and takes up a lot of room. Being able to make your own bleach is exactly what I'm looking for.

I was a little disappointed to see coffee filters were not included as (possibly) step-1 for straining out larger particulates before boiling, chlorinating or UV'ing your water - Hey "everyone"; a couple of packs of "dollar store" coffee filters could be quite useful for just this reason - Berkey owner (3yrs) I've never used it but I'll filter/ boil/ filter again my water again before I pour it into my Brerkey

You forgot Precipitation from plants. Plastic bags wrapped tightly around bunches of leaves on a plant with one point of the plastic bag so low that it collects water. Its quite an effective method if you find 50-100 plastic bags. And you collect the water early morning when the sun is not so strong.
I know this is an older video. Another method you did not mention is to tightly wrap green leaves (leaves should be attached to a tree) in a plastic bag. This works well in an area that has sun. It will take awhile, but one can gain a bit of water that does not need to be filtered. Just move trees so that you do not damage them.
That humidifier idea is great! I live in AZ and all the water is just not drinkable it’s all pesticides.
Water that comes from dehumidifiers is considered gray water if not chemically filtered can make you sick or even kill you. Do your research on this because the Canadian Prepper did not.

Went to Blanchard springs caverns in Arkansas, beautiful clear clean running water, cold and crisp gushing out of the mountain, so tempted drank one cupped handful tasted amazing was ready to drink another when my Son pointed out a sign said not to drink cause it passes through piles of bat droppings in the cave, within 24 hours I was in excruciating pain sweating and writhing in pain for three days, ugh don’t make that mistake again!!

US Navy Training: On a sandy beach come 5 feet above high tide mark. Dig a 3 ft wide hole a couple feet deep so to allow water to seep in. Do Not Stir. Gravity will separate fresh from salt water. The top 4 inches will be fresh drinkable water. Skim it off carefully.
Now if in the Artic there is a 1,000 feet of fresh water in the Beaufort Gyre, but obtaining it presents other problems!

I dug a solar well on my homestead and now have free mineral water. This is the best thing you can do on your homestead as the water from the aquafer is mineral water. Also I dug a pond and I have over 6,500 Tilapia fish so that is one of my food sources. My pond is my storage for water which holds over 4 million liters of water just in case. A lot of preppers don't know how useful a pond is. I have videos on my channel how I made a homestead in 10 months.
But wouldnt the water from the pond taste like fish?

Awesome job Nate. Many folks fail to mention the weaknesses of the various methods.
I had some water stored in special water 10L container plastic bags with blue on one side to face bright areas. I stored one bag way back 18 months ago and was concerned about its quality. I bought a TDS, and water 'test strips'. I live in a one bedroom apartment so not a lot of room so the bag was in a reasonably bright bathroom under the sink. As it turned out the tests were IDENTICAL to Sydney tap water. So if the water is stored reasonably well, you have no worries storing water.
If you travel to a different region. I highly recommend brushing you teeth with the water for a week or so before drinking it from the tap. This gets the body use to it. Just like how your body needs to adapt to different climates, the same goes for water consumption.
A lot of good ideas in this video. I think the overall best option is the BigBerky. They are expensive and I am unfortunate that I live in Iowa which they will not ship to but I really want one. I would like to do everything I can to have water in any shortage or outage situation. I worked a summer on an asphalt crew and you learn quick to always have a way to keep water with you.
It’s wild. So many people are in denial about the grid going down but I’ve experienced it many times already with hurricanes. My towns water system was destroyed in Ian and we had to wait for them to build a new one. everything goes in the blink of an eye. No way to call for help. No cell service for weeks. You have to rely on your neighbors. People brought chainsaws to help each other clear debris. People from neighboring towns brought in water and gas. I told my friends to take out cash to pay for everything and no one listened 🙄

FYI: Reverse Osmosis is the technology used for water makers on boats and yachts. Most of these systems are turning sea water into drinking water. However, turning surface water, ie streams, creeks, rivers, etc, into drinking water requires a different membrane than the sea water units. There's something called a brackish water membrane that is used for surface water. You will also need to filter the water coming to the RO system using a minimum of 5 micron filter but a 1 micron filter would be even better, and I'd recommend a UV light after the RO unit to insure all bacteria is killed. RO membranes will cross over at 350 psi, meaning they will produce clean water at that pressure but the volume is dramatically reduced until the pressure gets up to the typical 700-800 psi used in most sea water and brackish water RO systems. Also RO systems hate any kind of petroleum product in the raw water. The petroleum will destroy the membrane. Chlorine will do the same thing to RO membranes, but a simple carbon filter ahead of the RO membrane takes out the chlorine.
There is also a handheld gadget called "Quench" for converting seawater to drinking water.
is zero ppm water in danger of contamination if stored as is? If we consume zero ppm regularly will that be detrimental to us, our immune system ,blood, stomach health etc? Thankyou for any feedback you seem to know more than me (which granted is not much) but still i would benefit from your input along with everyone else.
I would also caution everyone to purify any non-cooked food that you consume. When I lived in a third-world country, we always soaked any salad greens or foraged food (especially near water that could be contaminated) in al iodine solution overnight to kill parasites and bacteria. Dysentery of any kind is not something you want to experience, especially in a SHTF scenario.

Solar purifier. Large bottle like the ones for water coolers. Paint black, make a stopper with pvc tube to a smaller bottle suspended over head. Make sure tube goes to top, put in a drain with a tube running down. The idea is to heat the water making it evaporate - then condense. Draw off pure water. To make it more efficient put a solar reflector around the lower bottle, and keep the upper bottle cool.

Great access to water is why I love my well. It operates on 220-volt grid power but several years ago I added a manual well pump that cost around $400. It pumps enough water to supply a household of 4 with just a few minutes of pumping. Plus, it's in my yard so I only spend about 30 seconds from the front door to the pump.

The 2 best tasting waters I've had iny 62 yrs is the drinking water was 1) on a US Submarine. We used a 12K distiller and it made the best water with a slight sweet taste, 2) Georgia mountain spring water after sand filters. BTW I have lived in Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Connecticut, Washington State, Commiefornia, Hawaii. Ga. mountain water is better.

Great tips. Please go see his water storage video next. Take used soda or other bottles and fill them up with tap water while you can. They can store just fine. If not for drinking, you can keep water on hand to flush your toilets and wash yourself without wasting water you have to boil or purify. Thank you, Nate.

Get a biolite camping stove which will run off twigs and small sticks, it will boil a small pan of water in minutes, once the water has cooled down use a lifestraw. You can also charge your phone using a boilite camping stove.

AT 11:34 , the diagram for the distillation is surprisingly drawn properly. The coolant water starts at a low point and moves up to the the higher point - some people get that backwards. Good Job !!!

Im a well water drinker, and have stream access, never made me I'll in 17 years. I'm told my well is loaded with organic mystery stuff but I don't boil and I'm fine. Yet, if I go to some house that has public water I can literally smell the chemicals when I walk in the door. I drink that I feel crunchy and nauseated shortly after, gets me every time. Does this mean I already have the microbe tolerance of a raccoon or at least a mideval serf??

Although Finland has the cleanest tap water in the world, if it gets ruined, all you need is a bucket. Finland's lakes have also been measured to be the cleanest in the world. In fact, cleaner than tap water in many countries. So come drink from our 180k lakes. (However, avoid seawater)
Thankfully ontario has abundant water.
I'm a stones throw from 2 lakes. Fairly clean from any chemicals.. I just boil it and away I go.

I live in Vietnam and here they have giant 100 gallon tanks that sit on top of people's houses, presumably to be used when the water shuts off. I can't seem to figure out how mine works, the valves on it have long since seized up. I also have a "Kangaroo" filtration system for drinking water. I don't know how effective this system is but they seem to be very popular here as well.

Take a look at potassium permanganate - I like it better than bleach. I have several silver-impregnated ceramic candles installed in stainless-steel pots. I have several friends in Vietnam that treat all their water with ceramic filters.
Could you guide me to a search I could do on yt for this? Would it be potassium permanganate or silver line candles? I’m brand new to this and have no idea what to look for.

Potassium permanganate has so many uses for preppers that the World Health Organization lists it as a must-have chemical for third-world countries. In weak concentrations, it can treat drinking water, in stronger concentrations it can disinfect contaminated vegetables, at stronger concentrations yet it can treat fungal infections like jungle rot.
When mixed with glycerin it can be used as a fire starter.
It is readily available from Amazon at a very good price. It has an almost unlimited shelf life when kept dry.

As for toxicity, chemical disinfectants are available for human consumption. In the US, proof of safety is to adhere to National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) Standard 61 and obtain certification (certified products are marked with the certification on the label).
Well water is assumed to not need filtration until proven otherwise. The test for “proof” is an E. coli analysis by a lab.
If you have access to solar, wind, or water energy you could always use an induction plate to boil water. You will need a battery setup but if you are setting up a stay at home prep situation this is a viable method. Also if you live in a lowland area where there is water there are well setups that go down about 12 ft that use the earth itself as a filtration system. Again this is a staying at home prep.
