  • Woodenwidget introduce the super light weight Foldavan folding caravan for bicycles. Three modes, 21 cm wide Stow mode, 60 cm wide Road mode and a 100 cm wide Camping mode.
    You no longer need flat, even or dry ground to sleep on. No more worrying about stones or tree roots in your back. Set up your camp anywhere, even on a slope. Carry lots of stuff in the caravan too.
    Very stable but if it's really windy, simply unzip the sides and the wind blows right through.
    Surprisingly easy to tow behind any bike, weighing from just 30 kilos.
    Not everyone wants this level of camping but for those who love comfort and luxury the Foldavan is hard to beat.
    You can't buy 'Cool', you have to build it. www.woodenwidget.com
    Now available: The Hoopy Wooden Bicycle....

    Hello, I just wanted to tell everybody that my girlfriend and I took the foldavan on a two month trip through France in September/October and it didn't fall over once. Not once. Wind is not an issue. Also, when it was raining we stayed so dry and comfy and best of all off the ground! (Only way I could be convinced to camp). When we wanted to go to a different region we put the foldavan in stow mode and took it on the train. It even went on the TGV (high speed trains in France). Everybody along our route just loved it we made so many friends. We biked through the Loire, Alsace and Burgundy. I am not an experienced cyclist but I towed it 10 miles a day with relative ease. It was the coolest way to travel!

    I love the idea... but I live in Scotland, and it's usually exceptionally windy here. Even on nice days. I wouldn't feel confident taking what's essentially a giant sail on the road. ^^; It would be interesting, as KlunkerRider says, if the design could be adapted to flatten it or lower its profile. Still, very inspirational.

    Why not make it a folding roof bike caravan? Like the small Volkswagen camper folding roof that folds up in one end to give head space? That way it would take side wind a lot better when traveling with roof folded down. Opening the sides to make wind blow trough sounds like a bad idea when it starts raining (here wind and rain usually come as a pair).

      More. That's the problem with DIY. These videos are for people who already have the tools and see the materials as just a added expense. "This'd be a cool project if you're bored" type of thing. There's a guy who made a Coroplast bicycle camper and all it takes to make it is the coroplast, a awe, and zip ties for the main frame. Some wood for the body.

    One good cross breeze or passing semi-truck and that's going to be blown on its side. would be road safer if the top folded down to create a flatter profile, you could still store any gear on the top of the trailer.

      benjy1966 Send me the design drawings and I'll take a crack at it.
      On the other video I suggested you could replace the wood slate ribs with flexible metal rods like a camping tent. The fabric could then be folded flat, use a bungies to hold the fabric down and hold the two sides together and you could still store camping stuff on top holding it all down with a separate cargo net.

      +KlunkerRider Not the best design IMHO. I like the elevated sleeping area but the fixed tent (even if you open the doors so the wind can blow through) is not a good idea. KlunkerRider, your suggestion of a tent that can be dropped which would be a good idea. You could keep a low center of gravity AND carry some camping gear.

    @promontorium 10 лет назад +2

    That thing is so insubstantial I would imagine you'd save more space and energy and just collapse the whole thing into a backpack, or a much smaller trailer with much lower wind resistance. I mean as is it looks like a big parachute just slowing you down for no reason.

    • @benjy1966
      @benjy1966  10 лет назад +2

      The Foldavan is for those who want comfort when camping. You cannot get this level of comfort with a tent. It is light so it is easy to tow. When in Road mode there is very little resistance as the bulk of it is directly behind the rider. It can easily be towed even in a good wind. Worried about it tipping over? Don't be. Only 20% of the weight is above the axles and if you're really worried it's a moment's work to unzip the sides, then the wind blows right through.

    • @Zhonguoria
      @Zhonguoria 6 лет назад +2

      promontorium. Towing a trailer on wheels is a lot easier than carrying it on your back - trust me! just design wheels as far back as possible to avoid wiggle waggle effect.

  • @markoose89
    @markoose89 10 лет назад +5

    Nice idea but I cant help but think why not just take a tent? Even those awful (imo) pop up tents would be easier to transport on a bike and a lot less, lets say, flamboyant looking.

    • @benjy1966
      @benjy1966  10 лет назад +9

      Why not a tent? With the Foldavan you do not need to worry about uneven ground, slopes, water, tree roots and stones. Plus a full 7cm of foam means you sleep really well. The Foldavan is for those who crave comfort when camping. Not misery.

  • @_onesimpleidea
    @_onesimpleidea 8 лет назад +1

    +Wooden Widget Nice bike caravan. I'm curious why you didn't design it in reverse, with the sloping end facing forward and the fat part toward the rear, for better aerodynamics while towing? Also, in order for it to be practically used, you'd need a place to store/carry gear. How do you handle that?

    • @benjy1966
      @benjy1966  8 лет назад +2

      Turning the Foldavan around and towing it backwards would not make it more aerodynamic, quite the opposite in fact. As to storing/carrying. When on the road there is as much space as you need for storage (you can even fit a folding dinghy in there!). When camping, the bed is 8 feet long. Belongings are stored at the foot of the bed.

    • @_onesimpleidea
      @_onesimpleidea 8 лет назад

      Interesting. Can you explain your reasoning behind your aerodynamic comment please?

    • @benjy1966
      @benjy1966  8 лет назад

      To be honest, it's somewhat academic as the Foldavan is never likely to approach speeds where aerodynamics really come in to play and if you like, there's absolutely nothing to stop you turning it around and towing it backwards if you want.

    • @_onesimpleidea
      @_onesimpleidea 8 лет назад

      Excellent and practical point. I imagine the concern about wind, to the extent there is one, is crosswind, and for that, it wouldn't matter which way the trailer was pulled. Thanks for the explanation.

    why not carry a small tent on a rack?

    • @benjy1966
      @benjy1966  8 лет назад +9

      +Trolling Stone Because everyone is different, because some people get pleasure from sleeping in a mobile shelter that they made with their own hands, because some people prefer to know that no matter where they stop they will be sleeping on 7 cms of comfy foam that night and not tree roots, stones, insects, sloping ground etc, because the Foldavan allows people with restricted mobility to camp as they don't have to crawl around on the floor, because a funky tear drop caravan will make you friends wherever you go, because it only weighs 30 kilos and is surprisingly easy to tow, because it can act as a trailer to carry your stuff, because if it rains suddenly you'll have instant shelter.

    The biggest issue(IMO) is when the day happens to be windy and the left & right flat sides are going to do with the bike & rider. The $ for this isn't much, but one may want to consider what it's going to cost you, especially when the wind picks up.

    • @benjy1966

      This is easily solved by simply unzipping the sides. Wind blows right through. Plus it has a very low centre of gravity with only about 20% of the weight above the axles. The Foldavan is a lot more stable than it looks. Wouldn't be much good if it wasn't.

      +Bertie Blue A tent is not a caravan. The problem with a tent is that it discriminates against people with restricted mobility, because the Foldavan is off the ground it is much easier to use and allows some people to go camping who could not do so with a conventional tent. A Foldavan can be assembled over running water, ants nests, tree roots, stones and all the other things that can completely ruin a nights sleep in a tent!
