New Rocket League seasons always call for new things to talk about. This season, Psyonix decided to drastically change how ranked works by resetting 3v3 and 2v2 especially a lot more harshly than normal. People's 2v2 ranks were decreased by 300 MMR, which is 2-3 full ranks. That is a lot. Today we talk about the details and the reasoning behind that decision, as well as other recent topics in the Rocket League community.

I will say, the rumors about Bakkesmod being a problem in the future aren't an issue. Rocket League partners with Bakkesmod for functionality during RLCS broadcasts, and it's more likely any dll injections will just be hard blocked during online play. So at the very worst, goodbye to custom items, mmr on scoreboard etc in online servers

EDIT: 5:31 Of course they will do it. UE5 just needs to be in a more mature state, for performance reasons (graphics, latencies, net-code).

The most upsetting part for me personally was that I had made a climb in skill from c1-c3 in the last few weeks of the season and I was hoping to make my first push for GC and now I'm back to where I started in the previous season without actually getting any worse.

well it should be easy to rank back up at least, as long as you stay dialed in. Me and my teammate ranked back in a day with that big reset.

No you haven't. The mmr just goes up eventually. If you play through the season like you always have, then you will go back to your normal rank
Also note that it was in the last week of the season where you probably didn't make one skill jump and rather that the people better than you outpaced your rank and you won into the higher divisions because of it. That's what happens at the end of every season when it's much easier to rank. All you need to do is continue to improve and you will rank up. Comparing about mmr compression is only bad for you.
I personally wish I had ended up more compressed, I should have to prove that I can rank up and I should actually hit lobbies with people noticably better than me, unlike in normal ranked when even smurfs really aren't that much better than a GC2 unless they're high GC3 and there really aren't that many of those
I’m actually so glad you took the time to explain what was happening with the MMR this season. I ended last season at Champ 1 Div 3 and I am now sitting at Diamond 1 Div 4. I was losing my mind about how I could have possibly dropped so far.

same i was c2 div 1 last season and i got placed at diamond 2 div 2 but i got back up to c1 now
A harsh reset was way too much to do without any announcement of it happening prior to the season starting. What they should do is just slowly increase the amount of mmr your lose in 2s each season until it's the same as the other playlists, then no one would complain. Doing drastic changes like that just makes us question Pysonix and it makes us think they have no idea what they are doing. Also I felt like I was finally making progress towards finally reaching GC 2 and being pushed back so far this season was highly annoying in trying to achieve my aims for this season.
This already happens if you are losing more than you are winning.
The opposite also happens if you are winning more than you are losing.
Most people are where they should be so they won't see drastic jumps either way.
It does suck, but the fact that they never changed the amount you lose made the rank inflation really bad so this was really the only solution for now.
I have an idea just like codm which has 7 total ranks let's suppose if a player is max rank (7) then his next season rank would be 3rd rank similarly if a player had 6th rank then his next season rank would be the 2nd rank so if a player is ssl the game should put him in plat next season and if the player is gc then his rank would be gold and so on
@@chancetokubo I think it's less to do with inflation and more to do with the community just getting better.
1s, 2s, and 3s are completely different game modes with drastically different dynamics. It makes sense that people will be better in team based modes than 1s because teammatws can cover each other. 3s is a harder mode to play so it makes sense that 2s has a higher MMR.
All this change will do is delay the inevitable, which is that the disparity will come back. Same for adjusting the gain/loss.
What really needs to happen is they need to adjust the thresholds and make Bronze and Silver more relevant.

I feel like Rocket League Racing is just Rocket League 2 (made with Unreal Engine 5). Maybe the fact that it's been 2 years means they are almost done (please)
The change made me quit the game. I spent weeks in the previous season solo queueing to get to champ 2 for the first time on the night the season changed. The next day I came on to find myself in d2. All the headaches, the stress of breaking through out of that division of ball chasers was for nothing, wiped away in an instant. (i had been diamond for over 18 months). During the time before the revert happened I tried to play and get back up. The playlists were abysmal. C3 opponents and d2 team mates. There's only so much you can do. So by the time the revert came I was in D1. It put me back to champ but the lobbies seem the same, completely mismatched skill levels meaning it was impossible to get any kind of winning run going, so i dropped from Champ again, and 2bh I can't see the point anymore. Terrible decision.
8:08 i do agree with it too i was the same rank as you and dropped to c2 div4 after almost winning all but i think its fun the only bad thing is that there's actual c2's in c2 (i know it sounds weird but after a rank reset everyone should be lower) so the games are so luck based you can get a ssl or a normal c2 same with opponents

That's just how all early seasons work, the high ranked players getting placed low and having to stomp their way up. That will clear up eventually
I’ve actually seen a wide variety of MMR drops in twos. Both me and one of my friends only dropped about 100, (from GC1/C3 to C2) while most of my other friends dropped 200-300 (from GC1/C3 to C1). The interesting thing is that both accounts that dropped only 100 were similar ranks in twos and threes (around 1350) while the others were about 100-200 below there twos MMR.
Its tough. Although i dont mind the idea of balancing out the ranks so that "C1" means the same thing across the board, I have been consistently getting better for the last couple years and this feels like a slap in the face. I reached Champs which felt like a decent achievement, then made it into maintaining C2. Now my duo partner and I are teetering on the edge of D3 and C1, meanwhile i feel like the best I've ever been.

Great thing about rank playlists adjustment is also include special gamemodes. I'm c1 (i was c2 before reset) in 2s. I love dropshot, but highest i could get is plat 3 div 4, because there are a lot of gcs and high champs. But now with start of new season i menaged to get c1. I skipped whole diamond rank and now im the same rank in dropshot as i am in 2s. Thats definitely a good thing
The rank thing happens in lower levels too, I'm D3 in 2v2, D2 in 3v3, and have been mid plat in 1v1, sometimes getting beat by clearly champion level players. The last couple of days I got close to D1 tough, so maybe its working

i grinded so hard to get gc2 last season. but getting dropped to low champ 2 just made me lose all motivation to try and get back. the rank drift between game modes is just because way more people play 2s
This change was so annoying because I am a 2's main, teetering on the edge of champ 1 and was hopeful to make the final push this season. But because of the 2v2 mmr shift, I went from D3 Div 3 to Plat 2. And even with the added mmr I'm still only diamond 1 div 3. They made a bs decision and didn't make up for it.
Cry more.. why does it matter? Oh it sounds cooler to say "I'm champ" rather than "I'm diamond" but if you're stuck at a level that's only a few wins or losses between the two then you gotta just level up your gameplay. I'm in the same boat, d3. If I get dropped down to d1 after my placements I don't care.

regarding bugs I had the spectator one again where you load into a normal match but can only see the filed and not interact, or even get to a menu to quit. I also noticed certain goal explosions are bogged on the new map with glitches when the ball is scored near the corners

Whats nuts is i went from c2 in dropshot to gc2 in it and i havent even completed the placements yet. Ive also never been gc in it before so ill take that free title lmao. Same with snowday went from d3 to c2. Now im c3 once again free title.
I think it helps way more in the forgotten modes because everyone is getting obliterated in the champ or diamond ranks by ssls and high gc players, when it should be in gc/ssl like normal
I agree with you about the rank displacement. Last season, I was Diamond 1 division 1 and at the start of my placements, I was ranked Platinum 3 division 3 and after winning 8 of my placement games, I again landed on Diamond 1 division 1.
I like the new way theyre doing it. My ranks were always quite weird. A few seasons ago i was almost diamond in 2's, but i was low gold (and even silver 3 sometimes) in 1's.
Rn, im plat 2 in 3's, plat 3 in 2's, and gold 2 in 1's.
I got to diamond last season, and was only rewarded bronze and silver rewards. Definitely some kind of shenanigans going on.
I also noticed that in dropshot me and a friend were given 200 MMR, because before D2 was 0.1% and now we are C2 and not a higher percentage compared to before even if we are higher rank

1 day before season reset I was playing comp 2 ( I’m a champ) and my opponents were 2 straight up bronze but players they couldn’t do anything except drive in circles so I imagine they used a bot to climb up but idk and it was a weird interaction considering Physonix banned bots

I’m went from Champ2 to diamond2 and my friend who was 1 game off of GC got put in champ1, it’s just annoying how much you get put down after spending seasons to get to a rank just for it to be reset to what it was seasons ago
Ive always tried to have the same rank in all playlists but now i feel like it just takes the fun out of that. Although the update to the rank reset makes sense i feel like ill lose part of what made the game fun for me plus knowing that some ssls just suck so much in 1s that theyre in c3-gc1 with me lmao. the fact they only revert 2s and im guessing leaving the rest is weird especially since losing 300 mmr isnt really to bad imo.
There's also a huge problem, the disconnected bar appears a little bit often than usual. I've played two ranked which suprise suprise got me disconnected. If you high ranked players say it's a "skill issue" It's not all about that topic. People like me constantly try to defend while our 2 teamates challenge on 1 opponent, which ruins my development as well as decreasing the rank.
2s reset was brutal because I was champ 1 and got placed in plat 3 so I’ve had to grind just to get to Diamond 2 rn

I was 1640 last season and I agree with the mmr change, BUT it feels to me that lower ranked players got affected less somehow? All of my games on day 1 of the season had low gcs/c3 from last season players on my team and on the opposition team, I feel like if everyone got reset the same amount they wouldn't be in my lobbies.
I had that disconnect bug, I was scared having anxiety thinking something was wrong with my PC.
I was wondering about that mmr thing when you started talking about it until you said it was reverted. Because I didn't get placed super low, but the game quality was noticeably better lower down than I'm used to. I think that change of mmr was a good idea, because nowadays gc 1 has too many people that would of been c3 in past seasons mmr wise.
Hard rank resets are necessary in keeping ranked ladder games fun. But people always complain when it happens.

I came back this season after a long break and it's constantly GCs in full solo queue lobbies either on opponent team clipping on us or on my team flaming everyone for not being on their skill level. Welp time to queue again and get slapped up lol
for me, my 3s rank is my worst cuz im in a lower rank so my tm8s are always bumping me in their journey to ball chase, and try to steal my goal but mess up the shot entirely.
At 5:55, there was actually also a similar issue with the S11 tournament titles.
None of the titles were colored and there was only a single titles for every rank. (normally you have a 3x titles as well)
Luckly for them I was able to report this before anyone was able to win 3 tournaments.
Now it makes sense lol. Was GC1 but was dropped to C1 with the new season. But then a day after placements, i won i game and gainded 120mmr lol.
I was so happy to see the -300mmr, because in gc1/low gc2, we cannot trust our mates, and if i started my session with 5 looses or more, i played in this strange mmr, where one game is really hard, and the next one is just free win. But -150 is still ok, boosted gc1 are c3 now 😁
The rank reset was a breeze for me. I actually went up in rank. Partly because I decided to solo queue instead of playing with friends. I ended up in c2. I usually land in c1 after placements. Didn't bat an eye. I had no idea that they had a harsh reset lol
Just got a Switch 2 weeks before Season 11 dropped and barely got to silver before the change so I had no clue and then came back after and got up to gold 3 so far but I never noticed any big change in my rank before lmao
Huh. I'm finding this video a little late but I did my 2s placements for the new season the day it dropped and actually placed higher than I had ended (C1 Div 2 last season to C1 Div 3 this season) and don't have a Twitter so I had no idea any of this was going on. I do agree that a rank such as GC should have the same meaning across playlists though, so I wish they had kept the change as it was.
I think I actually noticed the mmr change. Last season I was Diamond but after my placements matches I was Platinum 3 instead. But then when I was playing on day it felt like it was getting easier. I then ranked up to Diamond again. It might be because I hadn’t played in a time and then got comfortable again but I might also have experienced the change
In tournaments I got constantly the disconnected symbol my rank placement is the same as was before
@WaytonPilkin take this idea into consideration. For the next time you do “what will be META in 2024 rocket league” or how you call it, you should have one of the mechanics be no flip flicks. It’s very common in sideswipe, but I’ve begun to see more pros using the mechanic in their gameplay. Footage examples are, Sosa’s best assist of the week in the spring invitational recently, and a 1v1 show match between appjack and firstkiller. Jack scores one to tie the game up in game two. Just thought it was cool and it would be cool to see that in the video, but obviously up to you

i was so confused when i got placed into plat 3, i guess everyone just got a rank change. i was playing against a last-season champ 1, too.

I stopped playing when I saw people doing double taps and flips in my rank only to go to the rocket league tracker and see they were 4 whole tiers above me last season
@@everyone1liesd459 yea, there was a c1 in my lobby doing like perfect air dribbles. i get that they wanted to make everyone equal, but it would be nice if they had kept everyone in their own rank. I also dont wanna be put back in plat (even if i kinda deserve to)

For me, my mmr didn’t drop so bad. I was D2 for the most of season 11, but a wave of losses hit, and I dropped to d1 div 3 or 4. I did my placements and lost 3 or 4 but I still ended up in D1 div1
i hated the mmr reset. i was at 1020(ish) and really wanted to get champ 1 for the first time but when i started playing i was getting champ after champ player. and the worst thing about it. i actually started ranking up from d1 div 1 to d1 div3 and they reset it AGAIN back to 1k. so yea, now i'm at 990(ish) with ex champ 2-3 players
I agree with the reset.
I got my 1s rank back instantly (which i main). But what I was noticing in my d2/d3 1s games: there were 1700mmr gc 2s players for the first time (not smurf accounts). I mean what are they doing there? what's worse is I was winning many of them so the ranks were clearly inflated over time. People are upset because they now can't get back there, failing to acknowledge they shouldn't have been that high in the first place.

That's odd, I left 2s at 1510 MMR and saw it was at 1267 when I updated. I restarted immediately because I thought that was crazy and it went back up to low 1300s. I have no idea what happened.
Did they also do this for snow day? My placement matches have been against higher ranks than I was last season
As someone who works and studies, I don't really have that much time to grind ranked to get gc rewards locked in. I hit gc2 for the first time last season, and the ranked change has dropped me down to C3. What's worse is that all the pro players in OCE are also at C3 / GC1, which will make it infinitely harder to lock in GC rewards. Genuinely tempted to not play at all this season.

They probably had the stats to back up the revert on MMR hit. For ranks in general it's called an adjustment factor and that magic multiplier had to be adjusted to make ranks distributed 'better'. For each playlist they'd also need a population adjustment, that's why it's not a flat x% across the board. If it was the top 0.5% for every playlist, your least populated playlist would be the easiest to get GC in and your most populated playlist would be the hardest.
When he was talking about rank drift I realized that I experienced it i went from gold 3 in 1v1 now I’m platinum 3 and for 2s I was diamond 1 last season now in platinum 3
When the ranked reset happened and they tanked everyone's MMR... there's no way that they didn't think that the community wouldn't get mad about it.

I completely agree but the only problem about the rank drop is that if u start a bit late into the season u will be playing against low-ranked people e.g. gc1 - c1 doesn't play ranked for a few weeks) c2 - d2 and gets to c1 then they have to verse gcs form the season before.
I think a huge part of people being lower ranked in 1s than im 2s is just a matter of practice and different skill requirements. I love 1v1 and 2v2 but I don't enjoy 3v3, so 3v3 is by far my lowest playlist. My 1s and 2s rank are pretty much the same
Idk about the harsh reset but while I barely hit C3 in 2s last season I'm already in mid C2 again, while in 3s I was able to easilt hit C2 last season and now I'm playing with former GCs in low C1... and obvioysly I'm completely out of place there.

I had a bug where the circle under the ball that indicates where it is wasn’t showing and it was so annoying
The one issue im seeing in RL at the moment when i come to ranked (i assume mostly for OCE), is there are horribly skilled individuals, the are higher rank than they should be, probably due to boosting and smurfs. I swear im either playing 3's and a guy will be doing back wall doubles all game, or a teammate (and i swear its mostly tm's) cannot defend to save any goal or doesnt rotate majority of the game etc. Like rank doesnt feel like it matters anymore. I figured this change might help a little with that but I think its not going to improve this situation.
I’ve only been playing since September and have made my way to champ 1 for 3s and champ 2 for duos, this is now my 4th season I think. The MMR drop has fucked me. Was making great progress and now it feels like it was worthless. A heads up would’ve been nice, but now I’ve temporarily lost motivation to get back there and lobbies are all fucked!
I went from GC to C1 from the reset. Here’s my view on it; all GC1s are in C1, if you are to move in C2+ that just means you’re more like a GC2. Basically, had they have kept the harsh reset, champion would be the new GC and that would cause every rank below it to be lowered as well. It was definitely fine the way it was before. I’m goad they gave us our MMR back.
I was d3 in 2s and after placement matches it put me in plat 2 but then after a few games i went up 2 full ranks in 1 game, I was confused but happy at the same time cus I was almost to my original rank
i calibrated diamond 3 in 2s from c2 and i was so confused but now it makes sense
the problem with the reset is that it hit people in different amounts. Some are still in their respected mmr and others gone down drastically. And it also depends highly from where you started. if you gone down from GC to C3 people can still play but if you dropped from c2 to d2 you are completely fu**ed to get back out of this :D
I was D2 in 3s in S10, and I got P2 rank in S11.
The most scary thing is there is no escape from this rank now. The absolutely all matches are clown fiesta and nothing more.
I'm really sad about this Psyonix decision.
My goal for S11 was - get Champ rank in 3s. Now I wish to escape plats. Horrible.
Years ago I managed to get a penta reset accidentally by doing what was done at 2:13 before I'd ever managed even a normal double reset
I hated the lowered MMR it pissed me off, Im mid diamond and constantly find low-mid champ players now, over the past couple days it has been getting better as they rank out but its just one more thing that makes beginning of season shitty

I don't feel like the MMR adjustment would change anything. Like the reason 2v2 was so infalted is because most people play 2v2 most of the time. I was c1 in 2s and in ones and 3s I'm around plat because I just haven't played those playlists in a while.
was pretty dissapointed when i found out i was c1 in 2v2, i was like 3 games off gc 1 for the first time. now i understand and i agree aswell that ur rank is more simuler. stil hate it i have to grind back tho, but with motivation again. thanks for the explanation.
did this happen to anyone else, In my placement matches i went up 130 ish mmr so me a c1 was playing against gc's in their placement matches and I just gotta tell you it's completely different like there's no breathing room is constant defence or offence where i ended up getting demo'd about 5 times in 30 seconds bc of slow rotation
There’s also the private match bug where u cant see the ball indicator and even sometimes players names

Rank reset was fun this season. Went c2-d3, already back at champ though, and should be an easy climb back.
The way dropshot and snowday got effected are pretty huge. Probably because the top 50% in those modes was like gold 1.
I was gold 3 in snowday, and got boosted to plat 2.
I was low gold 1 in dropshot, and got boosted to high plat 1.(now plat 2)
There is a bot named Jess with 8 ping and says gg after the match but I don’t think it’s in rocket league anymore

Also playing with people that are a full rank below you in theory ist really horrible, personally i dont care a lot about rank but damn being back in this hellscape where teammates chase you for the ball really kills the fun
U should do a video of the mechanics u predicted would be meta that actually did become meta with like examples of it being used and stuff

That actually does sound sick. Track mania with wavedashes, flips, jumps, and the ability to control your car in the air? I’d play that extra mode.

On Rocket League being ported to UE5, Im an old school 1.6 player and played CSGO since beta, I never thought we were going to get CSGO ported to Source2 and instead they actually made a new CS in Source2.
So we can have hope that maybe it will happen in RL

As a 2’s player, I hated the rank reset. I am still dealing with GC’s! In C1! It is actually so annoying when I am trying to grind to C2 and get as much XP as I can to get the new items.
I'm not going to lie. The ones I've seen complaining the most about the reset are the ones that didn't belong in that rank in the first place and were boosted or carried 😂
