  • Kickoffs are so much more boring in Rocket League than they need to be. So I put a twist on them to make them more interesting. I tried new risky kickoff strategies in ranked Rocket League.

Rocket League Kickoffs are one of the most important aspects of the game. It determines who gets play to play offense first which is often a big difference maker in a game's outcome. Right now, everyone in the player base uses the same kickoff strategy in Rocket League. Today, I experimented with some friends to see if we could come up with any strategies that worked better or perfectly countered that standard strategy that everyone uses right now. It was a lot of fun and we actually walked away with something that we'll probably end up using in future ranked games. New Rocket League kickoff strategies are a lot of fun to try out even if they aren't successful.

I think I’m probably being stupid here but for the first one does it not almost completely eliminate the risk if it’s the kickoff with 2 players diagonal? If one player half flips onto the boost and goes instantly back to net it’s pretty much impossible to concede if done effectively, joreuz uses this in 1v1 a lot. Doesn’t this mean that it eliminates the chance of conceding directly and gives boost control?

I do a variation on this lately. I play KBM and my q key started failing recently... I use both Q and E depending on which diagonal I'm coming from. So when Q doesn't fire, I usually end up correcting in such a way that my back side blocks the ball - surprisingly that often ends up advantageous for out team. New keyboard is on the way this week...

    • @JacobRise1492
      @JacobRise1492 2 года назад +2

      I have a "sped flip"
it was originally a joke between a friend and I, because while learning speed flips, I would speed flip, land wrong, and fall short of the ball.
Now in high diamond and low champ, its crazy how sped flipping, landing short, while the other team speed flips and hits it right into me, its a very effective kickoff.
Prob only works in 2s though, because 1s it is dumb and risky (nobody back just in case) and in 3s there's just too much going on. I love it because its only ever one in 25 kickoffs that the ball goes into our side of the field in a bad position. Usually, it goes right into tm8 who went for boost, I win it or it goes to the side slightly towards our side so tm8 can get it.
It's most effective on side kickoffs, but it works still, just less.
to do it is simple. Do a speed flip, but instead of flipping into the ball a second time, slam on the breaks. Aim the car slightly towards wherever your tm8 is and then jump while using air roll, but just a little bit. Use air roll for as long as you press X (or A/space) then flip into it after the other team hits the ball. Its almost like a re-direct. Usually, it goes to the wall on the side, slightly back. I call it the Sped Flip.

I've been doing that last strategy for a while now, whenever I'm in either diagonal position, I boost straight for the ball but then swerve a bit to my side of it. It works sometimes. And when it doesn't work, most of the time it still turns out ok. You don't even really need comms when random queueing - if the other diagonal goes for it, I do the swerve. If they don't, I just do the regular kickoff instead.

I think if you vary your kickoff strategies throughout the game, you're less likely to have the result you found with strategy #1. It can be a weakness *if* your opponent figures out what you're doing, but that only happens if you keep doing it. If you mix strategy #1, #3, and the standard kickoff throughout the game, it's a bit risky to simply shoot the ball straight at your goal.
The reason why the standard kickoff became standard is because when properly executed, it's just a mid-field 50/50 every time. It has neither advantages nor disadvantages, but that doesn't mean that it should be the default kickoff for every kickoff, although maybe it's good to default to it if you're winning the game and don't need additional goals, simply because there's little chance of it going poorly (unless of course, your opponent tries something unexpected...).

You both go and demo the person on kickoff, and then the person cheating up (if anyone is cheating) and then YOUR third man goes and shoots the ball which should be left untouched if the kickoff is done correctly. Theres also a second one involving a pinch like in the video, where both team mates pinch the ball into the net off a speedflip.

Whenever I have kickoff, I usually go for a standard setup, but slow down slightly and side-flip towards my half instead of flipping towards the ball so I can direct the ball into my team's back corner and right to a teammate. Usually the ball ends up rolling at a medium-to-high speed, easy to control. Gives my team possession right off the bat. Has worked out quite a bit in Champ, especially in 2s.

That being "micro mechanics" or "small-ball moves". Things like recoveries off the wall when you're low on boost and are close to the ground. Getting ball touches from the corners when you're either on defense or offense. Just training all the little things you do with your car and the ball that aren't dribbles, flicks, or power shots. Idk if this makes sense or not but I'm in C1and since I've begun focusing on these little movements/touches, I've seen a massive improvement in my overall control but I'm struggling to articulate exactly it all entails. If you're looking for this trend of exploring new strategies for different aspects of gameplay, I would love to see a video trying out new rotations. I know this concept overall has been done before, but I've had the idea for a rotation where you have 1 permanent goalie and 2 permanent aggressive strikers. The players on offense try to keep control and play fast, without worrying too much about a breakaway, while the goalie remains back with full boost to save any incoming shots.
Obviously there's tons more potential for stuff like this, but I just wanted to mention that particular idea since I haven't seen it tried yet.

First off great exploration of kick offs. It's great to see these things get that love.
I don't think any of these kicks off are actually failures.
Kick Off 1: Creates unpredictabity. You utilize it, which forces them to have to switch to trying to centralize the kick off, in which case you can adapt the traditional kick off to force them into awkward situations from the get go... just when they think youve gone back, you then hit them again.
Kick Off 2: Creates a unique positioning advantage that allows you to play either a defensive set if you lose possession, or gives you positioning for a counterattack directly on the kick off. Plus, you can force predictability here in higher level and potentially pro lobbies, where the kick offs are typically much more consistant in contact.
Kick Off 3: Well... video explains itself why its successful XD...
The overall takeaway here is that, variety and unpredictability in a kick off strat are legit. That's why, though not used often, fakes, spanish kick offs, etc. can be effective. Because they create that unpredicability... even if its short term... which at times can be enough to win you the game!

We got it to the point where if the right side does a speed flip kickoff purposefully sending it left (opponent doesn't touch) and left preflipped sideways, it was basically in within a second at 130+kph every time. It's amazing if you can beat the opponent to it from the right, as they no longer have an impact on the control.

Just because the standard kickoff truly is best doesn't mean sneaking in the pinch is not useful, the fact that it is unexpected makes it so good

My friends accidentally have done strategy #3. Our teammate has a very fast kickoff. So by the time the second delayed player gets to the center they just have to be in the right spot to shoot the ball at the goal. We do it in whatever position he is sitting in whether it's left or right. Thanks for the confirmation video. That's real cool.

In strat 2 since left one goes, when im right side i speed flip and hit the ball to corner, and left one goes for middle and enemy corner boost and sometimes gets the chance for an open redirect

Once you demonstrated the second kickoff to your friends, i found a weakness you soon realized after using this strategy for multiple attempts. Its unpredictable to tell which direction the ball is heading once the enemy hits it. I have thought of a solution in which you jump to at least deflect the ball to the enemy side. However, this kickoff isn’t a great alternative since the opponent will counter it after one or two kickoffs. I would recommend you to switch between kickoffs to confuse your enemy.
    I hope this is useful!

With strategy 2 I think I’d be better if the person on the left would grab mid boost, this gives boost control and you have 1 player upfield with boost and 1 person backfield with boost. This will (hopefully) lead to insanely aggressive kickoffs.
You can even let the person staying behind go for the back left boost, this way, if the ball goes back right, you have someone with full boost back post and it allows the person going for kickoff to grab the back right boost.

There’s a much easier version of the 2nd kickoff that works for all diagonal kickoffs to set the ball to the back corner boost of the person going to the kickoff. Just do a single wave dash kickoff and aim to the inside of the ball and you always get the 50/50 to the corner boost

Bro. That first strategy was legit... For a surprise once a match thing. Give it a code name and call it somewhere in the middle of a match with teammates that know what's going on and it could be the surprise goal maker you need sometimes. Ha ha. And it was pretty obvious that last one could be used to. Even more than once a match possibly. Give it a code name too. Pretty soon you will have a whole playbook like real sports teams do. Ha ha!

The first one is good to mix up kickoffs. The third one gives you a boost disadvantage and if you don’t score, gives possession away too

  • @SUPABROS

A refined strategy one could be pretty good; instead of the last guy back going for boost they stay on net and whichever post the enemy shoots at you take that posts corner boost

Me and my team doesn't use the same as you started the video showcasing.
Ours is mainly the same aside from our last man closest to goal rotates into goal unless kickoff goes towards him so we always have a defender when things get tight

If the only judge to success is if you can score off a kickoff, then the default would also objectively be a failure. The delay is already a solid strat, just one you can't use every time, it's a sneaky sneak. And the first one, one I'd call the fake, is just as effective if you also don't over use it. Pull both of them out randomly and play mind games with the opposing team.

I did some MS Painting and the Delay Kickoff may slightly counter the Pinch Kickoff. Albeit there are no guarantees (of course), theoretically the pinching team would have two players at the ball with no momentum, while the delaying team would have more boost and be on a better positon for counter-attack.
