FAO Schwarz was a huge toy store in Manhattan. And yes you could play with the toys just like in the movie. You would come in the main doors and the sales floor was sunken. The main floor was the stuffed animal room. And the piano was on the balcony directly across from the entrance so everyone could watch.
The last time I was in FAO Schwarz was about two years ago. And they still had the piano out😉 I'm guessing it's still there, but I don't know what has happened over the last couple years🤷♀️ Edit: but this was filmed at the Fifth Avenue location which apparently closed in 2015. Just like a bounce house, no shoes
The 5th avenue location was magical. My kids are now 21 and 16 but I remember bringing them there when they were little. This whole place was an experience. That store and the multi floor Toys R Us with the Ferris wheel inside near Times Square were events to visit.
He was given a special gift of seeing what it’s like to be an adult and was able to go back to being a kid so he could appreciate it that much more. If only we all could have been given a second chance to appreciate it.
True, but I don't know that I would wanna relive my adolescence. Its like Susan said "its painful enough the first time". However, it might be nice to have a chance to do things differently.
Tom's first starring role in a movie is a fun watch - Splash - 1984 - directed by Ron Howard. A couple of great rom-coms with Tom are Sleepless In Seattle & You've Got Mail. Both also star Meg Ryan & both are definitely worth watching!!
A GREAT early Tom Hanks movie is called The Money Pit with Shelly Long who was the original woman in that show Cheers. It is about a couple who buy this cheap house with a host of problems. You will really like it
The friend (Billy) is played by Jared Rushton. He’s also good in: Overboard (1987) and Honey, I shrunk the kids (1989). Lots of great Tom Hanks movies you’ve yet to watch. Lucky you!
One of my favorite childhood movies. My brother and I watched this so many times in the late 80s and 90s that I can’t even count. The young actor playing his friend is Jared Rushton. He has a small role in Overboard, which I strongly recommend if you haven’t seen it. It stars Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.
I genuinely believe that more gentlemen SHOULD wear fancy tuxedos like that. edit: The kid's first night in that ratty hotel was the sort of 'scary' I didn't understand until I got bigger myself. Ah, the dangers of growing up.
The original reason people wore ties was basically bibs for adults during the ridiculously gluttonous feasts in the royal courts of Europe. A giant napkin hanging from your neck so you didn’t have to get any exercise from picking up a napkin.
Jon Lovitz was the scout in A League of Their Own. "I hate it when they get attached to me like that!" GUMBY! He was once a little green slab of clay. GUMBY! He can walk into any book with his pony pal Pokey, too. If you've got a heart then Gumby's a part of you. Yes, I would, in a heartbeat! As difficult as puberty was, it was better than most of what's happened since. Bonus: extra years of healthy living.
Would I want to go back to being a 13 yo kid and relive life again? HELL YA! Start over, blank slate and knowing what the pitfalls of growing up are before falling into them. Heck: Start me up 5 yo while we’re at it.
After seeing a Tom Hanks movie I remember my mom once saying she couldn't imagine being married to him him. Simply because he was always so earnest and believable even while saying something completely crazy. You could never tell how he actually felt about something because he was such a good actor. Thankfully I've never heard of him being horrible to people off-camera. So he could just be a great guy in real life.
The amusement park scenes where he plays the Zoltar machine were shot at Playland in Rye, NY. I met my wife there the summer this movie was shot. I trained her on my ride on her first day. In October we will have been married 25 years.
I've never been to Playland, but Rye used to be the home of the Museum of Cartoon Art, in a building called Ward's Castle. I visited it often until it closed in the early '90s.
The actor who plays Tom Hanks boss is Robert Loggia and he lived in my mom's neighborhood growing up, they went to school together. They grew up on Staten Island, NY

Film critic Ben Mankiewicz says that Mercedes Ruehl, who plays Mrs. Baskin, is perhaps "the most criminally underrated actress if there ever was one." Her part isn't that large in this movie, but I definitely see what he's talking about. In fact, many people forget or don't know that Mercedes Ruehl is an Oscar winner - she won Supporting Actress in 1991 for The Fisher King (with Robin Williams). Her most famous role perhaps is on the TV show "Frasier."
I swear.. love your genuine laughter! Tom Hanks catapulted over the years into a mega talented icon. He has so many great movies.. just go down the list and you won't be disappointed! Always enjoying your reactions!!
Even though the premise wasn’t written just for him, the role ended up being. Originally, Robert De Niro was meant to have the role (imagine how different that movie would be), but there were scheduling conflicts, so he had to decline. With Hanks onboard, the role was written in a manner more tailored to his strengths. All for the best.
I'm so happy you've become such an enthusiastic fan of Tom Hanks. He has been my favorite actor pretty much all my life. Another of his movies that I know you'll enjoy is That Thing You Do. That film was his directorial debut, and the soundtrack is fantastic!
You would love “Seabiscuit” from 2003. A feel good, underdog story about an undersized race horse. Set in the depression era and based on a true story. Nominated for several academy awards. Awesome movie!!
I grew up with "funny" Tom Hanks (Bosom Buddies tv show, Splash, Bachelor Party, and this)... it was so weird to see him be serious in Forrest Gump! Now, everyone knows him for being serious and think it's weird to see his comedic roles! lol I recommend Splash and Bachelor Party (slightly racy, btw). Tom Hanks is a national treasure
It was a giant gumby.... used to watch it as a kid. I even had a old posable rubber toy gumby. It had an internal wire skeleton so it could be bent and shaped into different postures and poses. It was pretty cool. Nostalgic memories. Love your channel. Your awesome.
A lot of people, myself included were sure that as a kid we had seen an alternate ending where Susan made a wish to become a teenage and surprises Josh at school. But it turns out we are remembering the ending of a direct to tv movie the same year "14 Going on 30" that had a similar story about a kid aging himself with a machine.
Big is one of my favorite Tom Hanks films.. Since you're on a Tom Hanks kick you really should checkout The Money Pit next. It's a classic, and anyone who has renovated an old home can totally relate to it.
The scene at the bank woth him asking for the dimes, nickels and $187 ones goes through my mind everytime I am at the bank & they ask "how do you want it?"
Yes, FAO Schwartz is a really famous toy store Rockefeller Plaza in NYC, right near NBC. Sadly it closed a few years ago but happily someone re-opened it in a slightly different location.
@MrParkerman6 My favorite part of that scene is what he calls the Ump as the Ump is walking away and it ends up getting him ejected for the rest of the game.
(10:33) That's Jon Lovitz, who hit it big on Saturday Night Live and has been in the public eye in a kajillion projects since, including A League of Their Own. (13:15) They practiced it for months, but, believe it or not, they got it on the first take. (16:35) Gumby (17:34) Paddleball
Yeah that's Gumby!! I had a huge (at the time) 5 foot tall one myself. One day, I randomly set one of its red pupils on fire with a lighter (to this day, I have no idea why the hell I did that)
It's funny when you realize who the great directors of the eighties were and where they came from. Penny Marshall was Laverne and Shirley. Rob Reiner, who directed Spinal Tap, Misery, Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, etc, played "Meathead" in All In The Family, and Ron Howard played Richie Cunningham on Happy Days directed "Cast Away", "Apollo 13", "A Beautiful Mind", "The DaVinci Code", etc.
9:50 it is all about the wording sometimes😉 after my first office job as a secretary, my next couple of resumes included maintaining office equipment ( I made sure there was paper in the printer), disbursement of office correspondence ( I handed the mail to the appropriate people), expediting orders (i checked tracking # with UPS/FedEx/ect), and customer / Vendor relations ( I answer the phone and handled questions as I could). But wording it properly helped nitigate some of the lack of experience for my second and third jobs🤷♀️😉 the wording outside of the parentheses sounds so much better than the wording inside the parentheses🤭
Enjoy your reactions. You bring the right kind of open mindedness to viewing things. Of course you are knowledgeable about themes, characters, arcs and storytelling from your love of books but bring fresh enthusiasm to watching these explored in a different medium.
Hey, James, I have you beat. Growing up we only got ONE channel on our TV! CBS was a VHF channel with a strong signal; NBC and ABC were UHF and didn't come in well enough to watch. Once we got a good outdoor antenna, we were able to get all 3 channels, but I was in college by then. Today we pick up 17 digital channels with the same old antenna, but we still favor CBS programs. Old habits die hard.😊
Oooh CBS weekday morning. 10am price is right. 11am 30 min news. 11:30 The Young and the Restless... They eventually swapped the news and Y and R time. I recorded price is right on my vcr.
Whoo! Such a fun movie. The mom (Mercedes Rhuel) was in 'The Fisher King', which is an *incredible* movie. She's so amazing. I think the issue with algebra is, sure, we use it 'every day', but not in the form of the problems set in school textbooks. So it's confusing and annoying for most of us.
Such a great movie and an endearing memory from my own personal childhood growing up with this movie. Great reaction as always. You continue to make me smile watching you watch my favorites. Thank you for keeping these "magical" movies rolling❤
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and can't imagine anyone but Tom Hanks pulling off this role, he is great. Awakenings (1990) is an excellent movie directed by Penny Marshal based on a true story and starring the always wonderful Robin Williams.
1. That's the same toy store used in Home Alone II. 2. Just try to get an apartment in NY City for that much money. Especially one that big. Even in 1988. 3. Every time I see baby corn I think of this movie. 4. Elizabeth Perkins could get it.😍😋 5. There's a Zoltar machine at Circus Circus casino in Reno. It must be plugged in to work though. 6. Would I go back? Hell yeah! I didn't have that wealthy family, and I still would. 7. Tom Hanks is the GOAT. Would I go back? Hell yeah, and my family wasn't that prosperous.
For some reason, "Three dimes, a hundred dollar bill and eighty seven ones" always cracks me the heck up. It's so exactly what a 10 year old would say. [EDIT: I mean 13 year old!] This movie is so good and is still funny after repeated viewings. It lost to Rainman that year but to me it is a more satisfying movie (though Rainman is a good movie as well).
I feel like an overgrown child sometimes. My pallet is the same way. Forget the caviar, give me a milkshake. I went to a Cirque dreams dinner show, and had surf and turf and all this fancy stuff. I tipped the guy double to go and get me a cheeseburger and fries.
The kid that played Josh's best friend was also in another childhood fav movie of mine called Honey I Shrunk the Kids. But he was a little older in that film. But he plays the neighbor kid who gets shrunk along with his older brother and 2 other kids who's dad invented this shrink machine. If you've never seen it please react to it. There are also 2 sequels. Honey we Shrunk Ourselves and Honey I Blew Up the Kid.
You totally should add “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” to your list! Besides being a great movie, you’ll recognize the kid friend in one of his other starring support roles.
Penny Marshall (Jumpin’ Jack Flash (1986), Big (1988) and A League of Their Own (1992), Her brother Garry Marshall (Overboard (1987), Beaches (1988), Pretty Woman (1990), Runaway Bride (1999), and the family films The Princess Diaries (2001) and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004), and her ex-husband Rob Reiner (When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men) all fantastic directors!
Referring to your dogs at the beginning, a friend of mine’s dog slept through a home invasion. The robbers literally tiptoed around a very decently sized snoozing pup.
If you love to watch Tom Hanks films, his first starring role in 1984 called Splash is so good. I'm hoping you'll get around to that one also. Loved your reaction. Great video
They (dogs) are too much! My dog, ironically, LOVES our mail lady and the Amazon guy we usually have. She's afraid of everyone else outside of the family. I hope those puppers are lifting your spirits these days and keeping you laughing.
A movie I think you would love to see is called “Touchback”. Having the chance to go back to a life changing decision you made in your life and getting the chance to change your decision (or not). Fabulous movie!!
Actually I've already reacted to it but it didn't make it on RUclips. WAY to much music as the primary part of the movie. Sorry. The full reaction is over on Patreon.
1:45. I think they smell the dog treats. Many Amazon, UPS, or Fed Ex drivers carry dog treats in their vehicles to ward off more violent dogs. If the drivers don't bring in the treats, the dogs can get quote upset. I'm not actually sure how far their noses smell, but in my household it's at least 20 feet away. 😅
True story. I went to Venice beach CA to spread my mom's ashes, went out to the pier and found a Zoltar machine. My fortune said I would soon receive a large sum of money. A month later I got my mom's life insurance fund. Not sure where I was going with that...
Great reaction to a great movie. Fun and surprisingly emotional. The make out scene is judged harsh by today's standards. At the time, we just looked at it as silly. There was NO way she could know or even suspect he was a kid. So she did nothing wrong.
John Heard's character invites Josh to play squash - it was popular in the 1980s, sort of like how pickleball is popular today. Love this film, it's funny and has a really sweet side to it. Be careful what you wish for! Penny Marshall is a good director, and glad you saw A League of Their Own, another terrific Hanks-Marshall collaboration.
The 80s and 90s had some great films that if they weren’t handled correctly could come off as cringeworthy. We’re talking about a 12 year old boy who gets the body of a grown man and sleeps with a grown woman. Now, that’s a lot of fantasies for 12 year old boys, but as an adult, it hits differently. I think they handle it correctly, but it could have gone off the rails quickly.
Many people don't know that Road to Perdition was based on a graphic novel by mystery novelist (and former writer of the Dick Tracy comic strip), Max Allan Collins.
Do you have a favorite genre of books, or are you like me, and your tastes run the gamut? What's your favorite book? Loving the reactions, keep it up! Be safe, take care!
I love algebra, but I had a two or three teachers who really made a point of using real life examples of how it would be used whether it was in sports stats or finding out how much something will cost on sale with tax. So I was motivated and it made sense why we were doing it.
I LOVED how much you enjoyed this absolute classic! This was one of my favourite childhood movies. I was born In 96 and this was huge here in England among kids in the 2000’s. It was actually my mum that got me into this film. She had it on VHS, gave it to me one day and told me to watch it. I never gave her the VCR back! 🤣 This holds so much nostalgia for so many! I might ask my Patreons to vote if they’d like me to just watch this one day as like an extra video. A few of them are struggling at the moment mentally and Big never fails to make people happy no matter how hard a time they may be having! I’d like to request a film for you to react to, I’m not sure how I make a request that you definitely will react to without a poll or if I have to pay you to just do it or how much cos when I get movie requests I just do them cos I never get movies (I’ve done like three in the last 11 months) so let me know what I have to do mate. Also how are you James? I haven’t been on your channel for a while cos I’ve been so busy with my own content and recently I’ve had an aunt die from cancer and another one diagnosed terminal so I’ve been completely depressed and I just don’t talk to anyone when I’m depressed. I hope you’re good pal! Again this was just fantastic. I also love how the parts of this movie that made me laugh the most as a kid were the EXACT SAME parts that made you just lose your collective s*** as well! Damn this is a great film. Not just funny but it has real, deep dramatic value too.
Three movies I can highly recommend if you haven't seen them. Clash Of The Titans from 1981 The Patriot from 2000 A Knights Tale from 2001 Please consider watching these, I would love to see your reactions.
Clash of the Titans 1981 is on my private Patreon request list. I hope it makes it to the channel before the year is over! During a recent Sopranos episode James mentioned Cupid and his wife Psyche. This movie would be a great watch.
Great Movie 🍿 THAT THING YOU DO, with Liv Tyler is one of my favorites with TOM HANKS, SPLASH is the first movie RON HOWARD directed Tom and Daryl Hanna, she was in STEEL MAGNOLIAS, That’s a movie, I think you’ll enjoy reacting to👍
I think this was Tom’s first movie. I hope you can find his old television show “Bosom buddies”. he and a friend move to the big city can I find a place to live in a women’s hotel. So they pretend that they are gay! He has done a fantastic job choosing movies over his career!! I love this movie too!Really great reaction!!

You would love “Seabiscuit” from 2003. A feel good, underdog story about an undersized race horse. Set in the depression era and based on a true story. Nominated for several academy awards. Awesome movie!!
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
I loved Gumby and Pokey!
Love it thanks
The scene at the bank woth him asking for the dimes, nickels and $187 ones goes through my mind everytime I am at the bank & they ask "how do you want it?"
This was basically remade with Jennifer Garner in the lead role in the film "13 Going on 30". It was pretty good but this was better.
How'd you like the Zac Efron movie that was the opposite direction?
In the beginning it was Palisades Park overlooking the NYC George Washington Bridge
Yes, FAO Schwartz is a really famous toy store Rockefeller Plaza in NYC, right near NBC. Sadly it closed a few years ago but happily someone re-opened it in a slightly different location.
Jon Lovitz was the rude baseball scout in A League of Their Own. That’s why you recognize him. This was a fun movie!
THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL! 😡
There's no crying in baseball!!!!!
(16:35) Gumby
(17:34) Paddleball
You should watch The Burbs (hilarious), and the kid that played his friend is in Honey I Shrunk the Kids, lol.
I love her in that role!
Try ‘Turner and Hooch’ starring Tom Hanks.
Will do
Everyone loves Tom Hanks ❤
Only as an actor. Yes.
Hanks was nominated for an oscar for his performance.
Hanks had said that he based is performance off of his own son who was about the same age.
What if someone bounces sideways off the trampoline and flies thru the window
I >loved< algebra. I used to do it for fun.
Some people read or watch murder mysteries, but I always thought figuring out polynomials was great stuff.
Such a great movie and an endearing memory from my own personal childhood growing up with this movie. Great reaction as always. You continue to make me smile watching you watch my favorites. Thank you for keeping these "magical" movies rolling❤
7:14 probably 😉 when this movie came out a lot of us ended up memorizing it🤣
Thank you for this reaction video, James. I haven't seen Big in decades! Thinking of your mom.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and can't imagine anyone but Tom Hanks pulling off this role, he is great.
Awakenings (1990) is an excellent movie directed by Penny Marshal based on a true story and starring the always wonderful Robin Williams.
You speak the truth James, about the dogs & the delivery guys...😂 mine is the same!
1. That's the same toy store used in Home Alone II.
2. Just try to get an apartment in NY City for that much money.
Especially one that big. Even in 1988.
3. Every time I see baby corn I think of this movie.
4. Elizabeth Perkins could get it.😍😋
James, you should add to your list the Tom Hanks gems "Turner and Hooch" and "The Money Pit"
You will not be disappointed!
Will do thanks
Jon Lovitz is the guy who said "pickle tickle" in A League of Their Own.
Hahaha Rain Man is actually being edited now.
i don’t like algebra… in college i got frustrated and i stabbed my algebra nook with a pencil
Don't forget Rob also did The American President.....another good film
Referring to your dogs at the beginning, a friend of mine’s dog slept through a home invasion. The robbers literally tiptoed around a very decently sized snoozing pup.
Funny
That’s unfortunate, but I kind of have to hand it to the burglars. That takes some guts… and very quiet shoes.
I remember going to NYC for Thanksgiving 2012, they had the keyboard in FAO Schwarz. Was fun to try to do the moves
17:49
Looks like a street version of Racketball. I used to play Racketball with my Dad at the YMCA.
His work mate in the cubical next to him is in city slickers 2. Sooooo funny
His friend was one of the kids in Overboard with Goldie Hawn.
If you love to watch Tom Hanks films, his first starring role in 1984 called Splash is so good.
I'm hoping you'll get around to that one also.
Loved your reaction. Great video
I'll check it out!
everytime i watch Big, i feel like I'm having a Mandella effect thing... cause I could have sworn that the girlfriend turned to a kid at the end
"That Thing You Do" didn't star Tom Hanks, but he directed it and played an important character. It's one of my favorite films, and I recommend it.
Good classic Tom Hanks movie, great reaction James
Thank you as always for sharing your experience with us all, James. Love this movie.
True story. I went to Venice beach CA to spread my mom's ashes, went out to the pier and found a Zoltar machine. My fortune said I would soon receive a large sum of money. A month later I got my mom's life insurance fund. Not sure where I was going with that...
Cool share. Great place to take and then go remember your mom. My dad used to fish off Venice pier, back in 1960s when they allowed it.
The keyboard scene is iconic
His friend, Billy played in Honey I Shrunk the Kids, the next year after this movie.
added to list
I love this movie! Thank you for your fun reaction!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great reaction to a great movie.
Did you ever watch Laverne & Shirley back in the day on one of your three broadcast channels?
The 80s and 90s had some great films that if they weren’t handled correctly could come off as cringeworthy. We’re talking about a 12 year old boy who gets the body of a grown man and sleeps with a grown woman. Now, that’s a lot of fantasies for 12 year old boys, but as an adult, it hits differently. I think they handle it correctly, but it could have gone off the rails quickly.
You have to watch “Splash”!
Yep that is Jersey and that is the George Washington bridge, and that is Jon lovitz (the scout in the league of their own)😂
You should consider reacting to _Road to Perdition_ where Tom Hanks and Paul Newman play Irish mobsters.
Many people don't know that Road to Perdition was based on a graphic novel by mystery novelist (and former writer of the Dick Tracy comic strip), Max Allan Collins.
4:02 when I was 10 or 11 I went on that ride at least 10 times in a row and was feeling sick for several hours afterwards
Do you have a favorite genre of books, or are you like me, and your tastes run the gamut? What's your favorite book? Loving the reactions, keep it up! Be safe, take care!
You may want to check out my Q&As on this channel. I go over this. Lots to talk about
Right after this, Tom would go on to star in one of my FAVORITE movies of all time, The 'Burbs
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
Tge Penny Marshall film to check out is Awakenings 1990 with Robert Deniro, you will love it. I guarantee it.
Sleepless In Seattle and You've Got Mail are two other Tom Hanks movies that I really enjoy. :)
I love algebra, but I had a two or three teachers who really made a point of using real life examples of how it would be used whether it was in sports stats or finding out how much something will cost on sale with tax.
So I was motivated and it made sense why we were doing it.
Sports stats is such a great way to make uninterested kids care about math.
@@jowbloe3673 it really worked for me!
Hope you're doing well friend and all the best to your mother and family.
This holds so much nostalgia for so many!
Clash Of The Titans from 1981
The Patriot from 2000
A Knights Tale from 2001
Please consider watching these, I would love to see your reactions.
Clash of the Titans 1981 is on my private Patreon request list. I hope it makes it to the channel before the year is over! During a recent Sopranos episode James mentioned Cupid and his wife Psyche. This movie would be a great watch.
Always enjoy your reactions. 👍 Fun movies w/ a young TH... Splash and Turner & Hooch.
Added thanks
I like this movie a young Tom Hanks playing in it
Great Movie 🍿
THAT THING YOU DO, with Liv Tyler is one of my favorites with TOM HANKS,
SPLASH is the first movie RON HOWARD directed Tom and Daryl Hanna, she was in STEEL MAGNOLIAS, That’s a movie, I think you’ll enjoy reacting to👍
I think this is one of his best movies he did such good work but I did like them and saving mr. Banks
They don't pretend to be gay in Bosom Buddies, they pretend to be women. Jack in Three's Company pretends to be gay.
