I'm new to VCarve. This is a great tutorial! I'm familiar with math and the concepts of Vectors, and how CNC requires vector based code to operate. The software is difficult to learn because their tutorial SHOW but do not EXPLAIN. You bridged this gap. Thank You!

Garrett is correct when he says always measure thickness of material with a caliper. I would add one lesson learned for us beginners. MAKE SURE YOUR MATERIAL IS FLAT. If not when you measure your Z will be correct but during operation it may not cut all the way through. Ask me how I know. Recently took me a whole day to figure it out. The same objects I had been cutting out plywood out of one sheet of plywood wouldn’t cut through another sheet of plywood. Plywood still measured at .5” and re-zeroed a dozen times. Turns out the second sheet of plywood was bowed down. Sheet was so large the clamps didn’t affect parts in the center. I had to readjust cutting depth to get it to cut through. Hope this helps!

Dudley, truer words have never been spoken. Sometimes just the smallest bow in the wood can mess up your whole dang day.

I have been in CAD/CAM since the early 1980's but a friend ask me to help him with Vcarve for his CMC router which I am not familiar with. I am going to suggest that he watch your videos and then supplement (if needed) when he is ready to cut. Excellent introduction to CNC.

When I saw the title, I figured that I'd know pretty much all that you had to teach in the video. But I still watched as a review. That being said, I still picked up on a couple of things. Like the Control Left to Right, and the Control Right to Left..... are not identical functions. I had run into that, but didn't put 2 and 2 together. Now I know why it didn't do what I wanted, simply because I was "selecting" from the wrong direction. Interesting, because it was a bit picky selecting things for a reason. Now I know. Now If I could just find the video that explains the "smoothing" function, because right now, that is driving me batty. For the Aspire version at $2,000.00, it is proving to be a very powerful program. As it should. Good basic video, for the absolute beginner, but still good for those that have more experience in (old) CAD programs.

One thing to point out, most of the shortcuts that Garrett demonstrates, like the use of the CTRL C to copy, CTRL V to past, CTRL X to cut, CTRL A to select all, CTRL Z to undo, CTRL Y to redo, holding the shift key to select multiple items, double clicking to select 1 word, triple clicking to select a line of text, are computer hotkeys that will work in any computer application. Not just Vetric.
These tips can be used in all your computer tasks.

This teaching tutorial is among the best I have seen. I have taught a little at the community college level and I know the good feeling that comes when you see a learner (in this case Joe) light up when he grasps the concept being taught. It's a wonderful thing for the student and the the teacher.
I'm a long retired engineer in the automotive field and now that I have seen what can be done through your CNC router videos, I am anxious to begin the process of doing something in this hobby.

I went to this site while looking for a table top CNC for my friend who makes wood signs using a set of metal templates. He's complaning about them sliping and ruining the sign. I've telling him he should consider a small CNC. I came across you doing the "VCARVE For Beginners. This is just the kind of thing my friend does. But he has never done any CAD work. I've been doing 3D CAD work since 1998. All plywood machining for speaker cabinets used in the entertainment industry. I used Vectorworks since 2000. In 2002 the company I was working for got a BIG Shota machine and I did all the programing for 7 years. Retired in 2010. I have always wanted to do signs with special fonts and graphics. I look forward to watching your other videos on CNC carving.

Thanks for posting this video. I spent part of a year in 2023 recovering from medical issues. I also live in Southern Ca and the summers a brutally hot. My CNC router is not in an air-conditioned space working in 100 degree pus work space is out of the question. Now the weather has cooled and I once again can work. I went out to the CNC router shed and tried to design for routing a wood sign. I was able to get most of the way through the design part, but when it came to the Tool Path section I was in trouble. So I when on Google to find a video that was created by you help new Vetric users and people loke me that have been away from the software for a period of time. The video I watched gave me the tools I needed to get back on track.

First, Thank you Joe for representing and allowing us to benefit from your One-on-One with Mr. Fromme. And as for you, Mr. Fromme, Thank you for explaining and discussing this in a way I can follow. I just found you this morning, like you were lost or something, anyway, I was the one lost. My Father and I bought into one of these Piranha FX CNC thangy. My Father had experience with CNC but he and I are so much alike, stubborn and ornery, I couldn't learn and he couldn't teach. Well, now he is gone to reap his rewards in Heaven. I miss him dearly...BUT I still don't understand this blasted CNC stuff. After watching this, I think I have finally found a place I can come and learn a thing or two from someone who talks to me and not at me. Thank you Mr. Fromme! You are a talented presenter and I look forward to watching and learning more with you. I see you just released "The Most Complete Vectric 101Tutorial for Beginners" 13 days ago.
