    Nah I’ve been natural for 14 years. I wear my hair OUT! I know damn well when my natural hair literally looks like it’s going every direction on my head. If she was in a rush, she could’ve easily pushed it into a low bun- no brush or comb required. I hate the dishonesty. Even during the black panther movement their FROS still looked beautifully coifed & put together. Let’s stop pretending natural hair doesn’t have the capacity to look a hot damn mess-just like any other hair type. We live in a “anything goes” type of culture therefore ppl think it’s ok to walk outside with pajamas, slippers, bonnets, and hair that hasn’t seen a drop of water in 90days and claim: “oh I’m just natural.” It’s disrespectful atp. Stop trying to equate busted & unkempt with natural hair all because you all don’t want to put any effort into your appearance.

She looks like she escaped from the hospital. All that's missing is a straight jacket. I don't wear hair extensions, not even braid extensions. I'm a natural girl. I wouldn't dare leave the house looking like this unless I was sick. Looking like her boyfriend just broke up with her this morning. And then she's a news reporter, and she goes on TV like that. There is nothing wrong with natural hair. Natural hair is beautiful but we have to also acknowledge and admit that natural hair CAN look unkempt and ungroomed.
    With this specific woman her hair did look wild and like she just rolled out of bed and went straight to work and I don't think anyone is wrong for pointing that out.
    Yes she is allowed to wear her hair anyway she chooses. It's her hair at the end of the day. However, people are also allowed to have their opinions about it.
    We will never live in a world where judgement and criticism, good or bad, does not exist. It's a part of human nature and human survival.

Regardless, they hired her with her hair looking like that so I guess they found no issue with it lol. And good for them tbh.

    • @Ms9mmBeretta
      @Ms9mmBeretta Месяц назад +5

      @@LethalLemonLime loud and wrong. They cannot fire you for NATURAL HAIRSTYLES, they CAN fire you for coming to work ungroomed. And she can take this all the way to court if she wants to and she would lose. Hell, if she was a minor at school her mom can get in trouble for sending her to school with her hair looking like that, CPS would be called. And this is regardless of race, this isn't because she's Black. Her hair is not styled, it doesn't even look combed through. That they CAN fire you for. The only way she would be able to fight it is if she could prove that she follows some sort of religion that prevents her from combining her hair on certain days. Don't ask nobody to point to any law FOR YOU, you can look it up YOURSELF honey. It's ALL there. It's not illegal to wear your hair unprofessionally to work, but your job is well within their legal rights to fire you if you choose to come to work looking like a lunatic, you have to actually STYLE your hair for it to be a natural hairSTYLE.

    People cannot be this obtuse to not understand what was wrong with her hair 😅 it wasn’t combed at all. She literally looks like Angelica’s doll Cynthia from Rugrats. That is unkempt and idk when black women stopped giving af about anything, but we need to bring back femininity. Now all of a sudden black women don’t know how to look presentable anymore?? There should be no reason why black women are going months without washing their hair, just building up bacteria and blocking the hair follicles. This natural hair stuff is getting out of hand now. Having your hair in its curly state does NOT give anyone a pass to not do sh*t to their hair. Like what is going on. SMH our ancestors didn’t fight for our freedom just for us to turn around and have terrible hygiene and bed-head. And I will absolutely criticize a black woman with unkempt hair just like people of other races do to their community. It is not normal to just get up out of bed and go straight to work without any effort on your appearance. Why should black women be the only ones exempt from criticism, correction & order? What about HER staying on code and making sure she is representing black women in the best light possible, to show that while our hair may be curly/coily, we can achieve many different FLATTERING aesthetics. I could look at her hair and tell she did nothing. Because guarantee when you wet that hair and let it dry it won’t come out like that. She slept on her hair and then woke up and didn’t touch it.

Also they don’t divide their hair into sections like twists etc so that’s another reason. Sentiments like this are part of the problem - you are still comparing this blk woman’s hair to the hair of a yt woman and upholding theirs as the standard of what is neat, acceptable and presentable. What is considered neat is subjective. People with straight hair do the messy look all the time and nobody bats an eye. We should be able to wear our hair however we want. We used to before we were colonized.

      I mean the pictures I shared of straight hair looking rough, everyone can agree it looks a mess. I'm not saying you're wrong in your assertion, honestly on this topic I'm willing to agree to disagree. I don't think she should be picked on for how her hair looks, but I'm saying in my opinion this isn't about the texture of her hair as that would make it texturism. It's just about the particular style she has chosen to wear to work. I mean it's causing all these hullabaloo and taking away from her talents. The other picture of huge afros and 'unique' hairstyles I shared in this video would still cause raised eyebrows when worn in a formal environment, but to each their own.

      @actuallyjuliee I understand. I'm just saying we really need to challenge what is considered professional to make it into something that suits our hair also. I wouldn't compare a room to hair in terms of deciding whether it's tidy or not because like I said it's subjective. I doubt that her hair was dirty. We need to....
      * Reimagine the narrative surrounding workplace hairstyles.
      * Advocate for inclusivity and self-expression in professional settings.
      * Break down outdated norms that restrict individuality in professional hair choices.
      * Promote the idea that professionalism and personal style can coexist.
      I want for us to able to do totally different things than usual without filling ugly about it. Someone mentioned how white women still need to wash and comb their hair took presentable so there’s no excuse for this woman to look like this. This woman most likely had to wash her hair to twist it out like this and some of you are still in the comments saying it looks dirty…you need to sit with why you consider kinky hair dirty when it’s not done to fit the European standard if beauty or professionalism.
    The challenge with the take about white women still needing to do xyz to look presentable is that we are STILL using them as the standard AND the process of washing and combing takes them a fraction of the time it takes us. And having done these two easy steps makes them quickly seen as “professional”. A Black woman with kinky hair has to take more time to MANIPULATE our hair to achieve the same acknowledgment of “professionalism” they do in just those two easy steps. Their hair is already the standard so the effort to manipulate it to be “professional” is very minimal. The kinkiest of us find it takes hours to achieve what they do in minutes. THAT is the problem. Our hair must be manipulated with excessive products and styling to be seen as kept. Let’s not fool ourselves about what effort looks like on both sides and how our hair perceived as professional or beautiful if not styled to the high heavens.

    • @actuallyjuliee
      @actuallyjuliee  Месяц назад +9

      Every time you put a comb in your hair, you 'manipulate' it. You can choose to leave it unmanipulated outside of work, but at work it's not too much to ask that you show up with your hair looking professional. Your hair doesn't have to be slicked down or straightened to be professional. That's the difference. A combed afro works well. The people saying her hair is dirty have no way of knowing that so that just stems from texturism which I don't agree with, but yes, I still believe black women should not be exempt from styling their hair appropriately for work.

  • @LethalLemonLime
    @LethalLemonLime Месяц назад +7

    Maybe the reason why I cannot fathom that her hairstyle looks like she woke up from her sleep and went to work like that is because my natural hair does not look like that when I wake up. I put my hair in large plaits or twists before I sleep, every night. Sometimes when I wake up some of them are pulled open if I forget to put a bonnet on. But all of hers are like that. So you may have a point, it may be intentional and styled. However when I was very sick once and bedridden, I slept like that for days. My hair did look like that just black and shorter. Every twist was pulled out after being sick and in bed for a few days.
      Do I think people are overeacting to her hair: Yes.

    Would I ever leave my house like this? No, I'm a bit of a fashonista- so I tend to put quite a bit of effort, which I genuinely enjoy, into how I look.
    However, it's rubbing me the wrong way that so many people are up in arms over the way this woman chooses to wear her hair. I work in corporate America, and I see WW-on a daily basis-coming into work with wet, stringy hair, either worn down or in a messy bun, yet no one bats an eye. No one takes them less seriously, no one tells them that they don't look "professional," no one takes offense, literally no one cares.
    Now, I understand that-going live as a newscaster-there's a different level of grooming that the public expects to see; in particular, female newscasters have always been known for their perfectly done hair and make-up.
    But, in her day to day life, how is her hair not being combed any different than a ww walking around looking like she just rolled out of bed with a greasy, unkempt, ponytail?

    For me the grooming of her hair is not as important as the fact that the story went viral. People of other races who have “messy” or “unprofessional” hairstyles don’t go viral. The test of afro texture hair acceptance is when people are able to wear their afro hair regardless of how well it’s styled at whatever level without it becoming a national news story. I think that’s the real win when it becomes unimportant regardless of appearance positive or negative.

      Most little girls learn grooming and self care from their mom. I used to watch my mom dressing up and doing her makeup in front of the vanity mirror and I'd practice doing the same after she was done with imaginary makeup. 😅You have to set the example if you don't already. Dress up and take care with your appearance how you'd want her to do if you don't already and she would follow suit if it's something she wants. But her a perfume, deodorant and lip gloss for starters. Most mothers are responsible for inspiring the feminine energy in their daughters. So if she watches you basking in and enjoying being groomed, she will want that too.

She does TAKE showers but she just doesn't LOOK like she did. I mentioned that i wish she tried to look better bcz I raised her that way, she's just NOT like ME in that sense. I already did what I needed to do to set the example. My point to the comment is that sometimes parents do what they can & try to raise their children a certain way, but kids today don't listen and unfortunately have to LEARN on their own & it stresses a parent out bcz the kids end up POSSIBLY getting fired from jobs OR getting into fights w/ strangers OR getting cyberbullied bcz they DIDN'T listen to advice. She's already a young adult but kids EVERYWHERE today don't grown up w/ customary ways. I wish they did follow suit but really they just do whatever they want to do. That's just the harsh reality in life.
      NOW i just show her these videos so that she can at least see that what I was trying to warn her abt really does happen w/ ppl out in the world & that image DOES affect the way we get treated in life.

    I agree with most of this video, but I am conflicted when it comes to big afros in the workplace. At the end of the day, a big afro is just long natural hair that was left down. If it was generally expected for long hair to be pulled back or styled that's one thing, but that isn't the case. It can come off as a more casual look, depending on the rest of the outfit, styling, and accessories, but if people of other races are not expected to pull back their long locks, we should also be exempt from that same expectation.
    Long hair in general is very eye catching regardless of race but that's because most people find or assume long hair to be hard to manage. I personally think everyone should be able to wear their hair however they want for any job that isn't in front of a camera, upper-level leadership, or requiring rigorous movement, maybe front desk as well. I personally would love to see some of the less formal styles shown in this video to be worn in office settings. For me, how you choose to style and accessorize the rest of your look matters more than the hairstyle. Also, the amount of yt people who definitely looked like they rolled out of bed at my last corporate job, from entry level to upper management, was appalling in comparison to any person of color in the same or similar position. That never sat right with me. Yt people, especially women, do have standards for work appearance, but I find they are rarely held to it as harshly once they actually get the job. They only have to play that role long enough to be accepted, while women of color are not allowed to stop the performance of it all.
    All that being said I did assume that reporter was having a bad hair day but over time I have trained myself to care more about people's words and actions than their appearance both in and outside of work. I can acknowledge that most people don't do that, and it is something to keep in mind, at least for work appearances. That's another reason why I'm looking for a wfh job, so I can dress exactly as I want to most days without worrying about any of that superficial stuff.

  • @ReesePieces4096
    @ReesePieces4096 Месяц назад +2

    It all comes down to texturism. Only desirable textures can have lazy days and “baby hairs” or “messy buns”. People with 4c hair cannot have an off day because of the association with natural hair being, for lack of better words, lazy. I absolutely agree that there is a time and a place for everything and there are appropriate and inappropriate hairstyles for ANY hair texture. Ours is just a tiny bit more harsh, and there’s a very turbulent history behind it as well.
