  • Matting Prints - Easily Mat your own prints at home for a professional look.
    With Christmas around the corner I have been super busy getting stuff shipped out to customers and figured I would kill 2 birds with one stone and take care of matting some prints for a customer as well as make a video how i do it. If you have prints laying around this is a great way to dress them up and create a nice clean professional looking piece you can give away for Christmas gifts or possibly even sell. If you enjoy the video please drop a thumbs up and subscribe for more videos!

    Hey Brady, thanks for this. Great tips. A couple of questions; did you make the matting cutting the rectangle out in the middle? And, what do you recommend the matting thickness etc? Thanks in advance.

    Do we need a foam board- Can we print and matt in a normal frame alone? Great work btw! really learning alot from your page/site

    • @BradyHommel
      @BradyHommel  3 года назад +3

      Thanks Chris, absolutely. If your just matting a photo and not mounting it to foam board, just be sure to only tape the top of the print to the mat. So the print can expand and contract with the humidity levels. Otherwise your print will wrinkle over time. Hope that helps. And glad you learning from it!

    You did not show how to cut mat to fit print. ( 12 x 30”) print here. What type board did you adhere to?

    I just got my first mats for my photos, it's the first time I'm going to assemble them, they are 30x40 for a 20x30 photo hole, but I understand that the photo has to be something bigger than the hole, right? What size do I print them? thank you

    What is the point of using acid free adhesive and then spraying bad chemicals on the back of the print ? 🙄

    • @BradyHommel
      @BradyHommel  Год назад +1

      To get it to stick to the foam board... that's all I got. Lol

    • @MisterGazda
      @MisterGazda Год назад +6

      as a beginner/intermediate framer, I don’t really see the point of the spray adhesive. Most of the videos on RUclips will tell you to stay away from the adhesive because it is permanent. It is much more common to see the T hinge method in which you use acid free tape to make T hinges to mount the print to the backing board or foam core in this case. And then you hinge the mat at the top to the foam board itself. My suggestion to anyone who is trying to start framing is to seek out A video that not use the spray adhesive.

      I just trim my af foam board to frame size, center art piece and square mat perfectly on top. Weight the photo to keep in place and flip open mat like a book cover. Add a couple tape hinges across top of art piece. Run a few strips of ATG on the foam board about an inch away from the border of the art piece. (Between foam board and mat) fold closed the mat cover and recenter if needed, press together and done. Drop in frame. No sprays, chemicals, or anything that will hurt or even touch the art piece other than 2 acid free framing tape hinges.

      Foamboard in general is terrible. Even the acid free type. Its buffered to a certain PH which lowers over time. A permanent frame solution using foamboard will eventually leave acid burn at some point. It should be cotton matboard with another cotton matboard backer. Coroplast is best in place of foamboard if needed. Im sure you know. This is for others reading

    • @MisterGazda
      @MisterGazda 11 месяцев назад

      @@Michael-vg8gx thanks Michael, I have never heard of Coroplast. As someone who is trying to figure out the world of framing and matting on his own, I am finding the process of selecting materials extremely frustrating. The main information I have gotten from books and online will suggest one thing (such as using acid free foam core) and then I will look into it further and end up in forums where there are many professionals contradicting that information. Often times they are suggesting supplies and materials that are not easily available. There seems to be a lot of “that material that is listed as acid free is not in fact acid free“ which is maddening. Not sure where to turn really but for now I’m using museum ragboard mat board ($30 per sheet) and acid free foam core ($12 per sheet) both purchased from my local artist supply store.

    Super 77 is not acid free. Why bother with the acid free tape if the spray adhesive is not? Everything else looks similar to how I do it.

    Thanks for sharing your expertise. FYI, "aesthetic" is often incorrectly pronounced aestetic, as if there were no h in the word. The correct pronunciation is with a th sound, as in thick, at the beginning of the second syllable. Don't be shy about saying the TH!

    Please don’t use spray on any print , it’s an overkill and eventually will just become a problem with the chemicals in that spray can.
    Talking from experience.
    Hinge your Matt board to your mount board with linen tape .
