One of the finest sounds in the world is that of a black 5 working hard. We have 45428 at the NYMR . The sound of her pulling up the 1 in 49 from grosmont to gothland is stunning. The sound of the whistle echoing across the moors makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end.

I've especially wanted to mention that I personally saw Bert Hitchen's L M S class 5MT Black Five steam-driven railway tender locomotive throughout several montages in my official DVD titled The Best of World Steam including the montage of that showed this fine mixed-traffic tender locomotive double-heading a train with another L M S class 5MT Black Five steam-driven railway tender locomotive numbered 45407 on the highland mainline on April 10th in the year of 2009 for the very official railway touring company's 2nd Great Britain as very well mentioned by Peter Fairhead himself!

Always come back to this vid to see old Alec giving the five what for! Always used to flip his seat and stand up in preparation to whack that regulator into second valve going through the tunnels at the foot of Beasdale. Not to mention rolling his cigarette in preparation, another character of the west highlands :)

That exhaust sounds gorgeous! I’m seeing her on the Thursday when she returns to Crewe with 46100! You are a one lucky person to not only ride it but get a real first class ride!!!!

Don’t suppose you bought her back to Alton with you? 😂 I happen to know a little line where she’d feel right at home!

I've especially wanted to mention that I personally saw L M S class 5MT Black Five steam-driven tender locomotive number 45231 throughout several montages in my DVD titled the Best of World Steam in montages like double-heading a train with another L M S class 5MT steam-driven railway tender locomotive number 45407 on April 10th back in 2009 along the highland mainland to somewhere specific mentioned by Peter Fairhead himself! In fact, it's completely obviously clear that this exact same steam-driven railway tender locomotive also apparently pulled a summer Scarborough Spa express train carefully away from the tight curved station in York where the National Railway Museum is basically located! In fact, the exact same steam-driven railway tender locomotive in this video had been the inspiration for the exact real-life basis of the rebuild of Henry the Green Engine!

Hiya matt, great video! How do these opportunities come about to ride up on the footplate?

Hi Charlie, its all changed a bit now sadly but the best way is to become part of the support crew of a mainline loco, its a lot of odd long hours and hardwork but as you see there is a reward.

Is this rail line along the Loch Ness? Across the body of water are some mountains; I feel like those are the Scotland Highlands.

It is the Scottish Highlands but not Loch Ness, it is where some of Harry Potter was filmed

@@Altondigitalimage Yes, I recognize the stone bridge. Chamber of Secrets had some filming there; you know, the scene where the Hogwarts Express surprises Ron and Harry from behind?
