- Hey Gardeners!
I hope you found this tour and the tips helpful. I started growing these elephant ears in February of this year (2020). I started them early so that they’d be huge this summer!
I purchased all of my Elephant ears from Sam's Club in store.
Happy Gardening

Yes! I had to move mine to a ‘morning sun only’ spot. They were beautiful!!!
I’ve watched gobs of elephant ear vids to find out their light requirements. You are the only one who covered that vital information. Knowing a plant’s light needs is critical for a happy thriving plant. Thank you!
Yes! It's one of the important parts of growing happy plants. Thank you so much!!!
Just planted some bulbs! Never had them before. Can't wait
Yay!!! They are so much fun to grow
Same, I got these and some cannans never messed with plants but these are awesome.
Wow!
This is my first year growing elephant ears and they have been a real joy all summer. Thanks for the fertilizer tip, next year is going to be amazing.
Glad it was helpful! I love them so much in the garden too!
My dad used to work at Alaska Fish Fertilizer. Those jugs being back memories!
Awwwww! That's really cool!
That's very cool I've been using it for years it smells but works well
@@americanstreet8704 The smelliest fertilizers work the best hahaha

💚💚💚💚💚 That makes me so happy to hear! Thank you! Happy growing!!
Stunning plant! Such a beauty!
Such a brilliant video
Beautiful, Thank you for sharing
I have colocasia gigantea. Here in Michigan I winterized mines by cutting it back, plant corm & root system deeper, than cover it leaves or mulch. It triple in size every year!
Wow! Ok so the deeper the planting the better. I'm going to try that this year! Thanks for the tip!
I'm inspired
Your elephant ears are absolutely gorgeous!!! 😊🤩 Your whole garden area in amazing!! 🪴 🌱
Thank you so much!!! I appreciate you saying that!

You are so right about the 10 minute sprinkles. My garden is still dry. Don’t depend on the forecast either. 90% chances of rain doesn’t mean we may get a drop.
You’re elephant ears look amazing. I’m trying them for the first time this year.
Yes! unless you get a torrential downpour you'll still have to water 😂. Oh good luck! Prepare to be addicted!
@@TheThriftedPlanter lol I’m already addicted 😂

Amazing. Great job. I just recently fell in love with these. I was able to finally get one over the weekend and immediately re potted it. I can't wait for it to put on some size. I ❤️ your garden, thanks for sharing.
Oh so cool!!! Thank you so much !!!
@@TheThriftedPlanter no problem. I subscribed. I tiedand staked both my elephant ear and my monstera when I got home from work this am. You got me motivated. Can wait to see the growth on both. I just re potted my monstera last week. New leaves are growing already, so I must be doing something right.

You should watch Suzette’s video on storing the bulbs for winter.

me coming back to take notes for this year! i finally am trying the bulbs so i hope they grow!
They will grow! No worries!
Thank you so much. I was a little late planting in pots but they are sprouting and I’m so excited. I took your advice from another one of your vids, I didn’t dig around, I was patient! I’ll get the fish fertilizer for sure! Thank you so much! (NE OH here👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻)
And, ok to take the plant from the pot and plant it in the ground?
Thank you for your video…really helped.
Thank you so much!
I use fish emulsion as well, but damn girl, those leaves are huge!!! I am so impressed. 💜
Heck I surprised myself! lol
In India it is found here and there mainly on the heap of garbage or deserted wet lands in rural and suburban areas.. and The Bengalis use to prepare a mouth watering dish with its stem 😋
That's very interesting. I love hearing about where it's found and how it's used all over the world. Thank you for sharing that with me.
YOU ARE AMAZING. I wish I could grow plants like yours. I'm going to fertilize my Alocashias more this spring if I have any left. New pups pulled out some of the large bulbs, haven't found them yet. Waiting for lowes and Walmart to get their supply in (very good bulbs last year). You definitely have the Magic Green Thumb!!! Love all your plants and videos ❤️🌿
Awww thank you so much!!! That's my fear about getting a puppy or chickens lol. I love shopping at Walmart for their plants. They are usually much cheaper than other stores.
I saw these at a Loves Truck stop. I want these in my front yard.
Just put my bulbs in can't wait for them to grow
So exciting!!!!
So beautiful! Thank you for the care tips.
Anytime!!

Thank You!!! Yay!!! They are so fun to grow!
Wow!
I loved your video, I purchased my elephant about 5 years ago. I was walking through a nursery just looking. I came to a Group of potted elephant ears, they were beautiful. I took it home, repotted it into a larger pot. I didn't know much abt them, we just kept reporting as the plant got larger. Omg, the ears became so large I could of wrapped one around my whole body. In the winter we would move it into the greenhouse. I knew it thrived on water so I continued to water it. I didn't know I needed to allow it to become dormant. The base of it is now approximately one foot wide. I have some questions I will ask later, we are going to my daughter's for dinner so I have to go for now. I just happened to see your video, I just had to watch it real quick. Your plants are gorgeous. Thank you for sharing it.
Blessings, Tammy
OMG!!!! That's amazing!!! You do not have to let it go dormant if you don't want to. You can keep it going like a houseplant. They usually slow down growth over winter on their own. I let mine go dormant so that I don't have to take care of them over winter. I would love to have one get big enough to wrap myself up in it. Thank you for sharing this with me I love it!
Thank you for a this video. I just bought my first elephant ear plant. I will just keep it in a pot since the weather is so "off" these days, that way next time they announce a freeze I can bring it in 😁🌹.
Great Idea!

OMG!!! That's so cool! What growing zone are you in?
@@TheThriftedPlanter I was in extreme southern illinois at that time , I'm now in southeast arizona
@@TheThriftedPlanter the blooms came from a center stalk and kinda looked like a calla Lily , or pitcher plant , long white with a long yellow staymen
Wow, they are huge and extremely beautiful!!! I know it’s early but when it’s time can you please make a video of your winterization process?
I will make an updated video this fall. I will likely keep one or two healthy bulbs

Those leaves are huge!
They are! I'm hoping for bigger this year!
Thanks
When I got to your instructions on watering, I paused the video and went outside and watered my elephant ears that I have in pots LOL! This is my first year growing them in pots. I have grown them in the ground for years with success and I am still doing that also, but wanted to try the pots in my front flowerbed. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Awwww! Thank you so much!!! This will be my first year growing them in ground so wish me luck!
thank you pretty
They are beautiful, You should consider planting them in the ground they will get fuller and more beautiful ❤️❤️

Yes! I did that last summer and they got HUGE lol
YOU GOT A NEW SUBSCRIBER! I bought 3 bulbs from home depot in the spring. I put them outside and they're huge! One thing I just learned from you Is USE POTS! they're invasive plants and its my first summer ever "gardening"...I just "bro'ed" so far and just soak them twice a day. Im going to split them and use some pots. Shout out from Brooklyn NYC!
Heyyyyyy!!!! Yes!!!! I love them in pots!
just bought a pot of elephant ears and split them 3 ways. I hope it works! Put them in the ground with east facing sun in the morning. just found your channel, great back yard!

Me Too Ma'am 🤗🤗🤗
I just got my first potted elephant ear plant from H. Depot. You video is most helpful!. I paid $25 for a pre-potted plant. I did this because the soil issue is out of the way, and I can move it around to meet it's desired sun light. Great video, keep up the Wonderful Work !!
That’s awesome! And a good deal! Thank you!!
I use a solution of honey and water weekly
Works great for all my indoor and outdoor plants
Does that get sticky? Or attract ants?
Great tips thank you ..I just planted some elephant ears grew out beautiful..but I didn’t know why they were falling..needs more water thank you✌️😜
Your welcome!!! Good Luck!
wow beautiful healthy plants.huge beautiful leaves & actually they look like elephant ears hey can we keep them indoor??
Yes you can keep them indoors and they should do fine

I just bought a baby Jack’s Giant and I live in a duplex. I am hoping it does well inside in a big pot but it’s is a HUGE variety. Wish me luck!
Oh my goodness! Its going to be amazing!!! Good Luck!
Wishing you luck
Great video. I bought elephant ears this year without educating myself beforehand. I feel confident planting them now.
You will love them!
Excellent, thanks for the great information. Your backyard looks great. Going to watch more of your videos to find out how you did it. What location zone are you in I am in zone 10b and a bit worried about full sun for colocasia. Any thoughts?
Thank you so much! I would make sure that they can get some afternoon shade and keep them well watered 🌱
Hi there thanks for the tips
First time elephant ear grower here
I started seeding the bulbs two weeks ago the end of April is that too late?
I have terracottas do you think they will like it?
Thank you again
❤️
Gorgeous plants you got there! I noticed the plastic forks and cant for the life of me figure what are they for?
Thank you! They are for these pesky squirrels that love to dig in my pots
They are beautiful I bought mine in June how do I fertilize them , which is better the live plant or the button bulb please thank you
Yay!! I like to feed mine fish emulsion. Or will use whatever fertilizer I have around. The most important thing is that you fertilize them.
As soon as I saw the forks in your pots I subscribed! We have some overly enthusiastic chipmunks and squirrels, so I've been doing that for years lol! I just bought 3 small bulbs...should I just put them all in one huge pot? I'm in zone 5 Wisconsin and we can finally plant outside safely now.
Hahaha! Instant friends. Yes you definitely can do that! Congrats on being frost free!!!
Just love your Elephant Ears. Have you tried any other varieties, like Black Magic, Mojito etc.? What is the average size pot you use for your Large elephant ears bulbs?
Thank you! Yes I have but haven't been able to grow them too big
I have this same plant but I’m hoping to keep it indoors any tips that you can provide please?
Love your video! I have a small plant, the biggest leaf is about the size of my hand, and I was wondering if it’s safe to repot it in a lot bigger pot? I’m in a zone 9b so I think it means I can have my colocasia as a perennial, so I’ve never taken it out the plastic cup I bought it in out of fear of shocking the plant. (It’s kind a large plastic cup cause I found a seller on Facebook market and that’s how they sold it haha)
Yes to the repot! It will grow fast and since its a perennial in your area you'll really be able to grow it LARGE lol!!
Beautiful plants. What size pot did you start them in? I have 2 jumbo bulbs. Trying to figure out if I want to pot them or plant in ground. Thanks in advance for your response
Hi There! I started them in 1 or 2 gallon pots depending on the bulb size. You will want to have at the least 2-3 inches of soil around the bulb if planted in a pot
beautiful and amazing plant :) you are inspiring me to get elephant ears. I plan to get from costco. 3 bulbs of each -Elephant Ear 'Aloha', 9-11"
Elephant Ear 'Colocasia', 9-11" and Elephant Ear 'Alocasia Upright', 9-11".. all bulbs. How many bulbs can I put in one 10-12 inch pot. I dont want too many pots since I will be do container in my patio.
Yay!! You will love them! That depends on the size of the bulbs. If they are small you may be able to fit two. If you can swing it I'd put them in their own pots
@@TheThriftedPlanter thanks :)
Beautiful elephant ear plants ! I’m about to plant mine in containers. Hopefully they survive the last Vegas summer. They’ll will be outside in direct sunlight. I’ve never heard of fish fertilizer before.
If you have some part shade areas I’d def put them there. I’ve never been to Vegas but I know it’s hot!🤣 That strong of sun might be too much 💚
Could I message you somewhere about my elephant ears? I found your videos while trying to treat mine and I'm getting desperate! You seem to know your way around these beautiful plants.
Yes for sure! My email is in my account details or you can message me on Instagram
Wonderful video and channel. Question - how old are those huge green elephant ear? Is that just one season/year? With each season, do new leaves get bigger and bigger?
Thank you! I don’t know how old the bulbs are but I’ve had them 2-3 years. That’s one seasons worth of growth. If you live in a warm zone where you can leave them in ground they will get bigger every year and will make lots of babies 💚💚
Here from TikTok 😊
Hi!
Thank you so much for the information. Those plants are so gorgeous! I live in midwestern Florida, so they grow year round here, but I keep having the lower leaves turn yellow and droop. From what you said, I think I'm not watering or feeding them enough, so I'll definitely do that. Maybe that's the problem. Thanks again - great job!
Thank you! Also its normal for lower older foliage turn yellow and die off but if its younger leaves I'd be concerned. Good Luck!
Hey love, when you plant the bulbs how long do you wait to fertilize them? I just planted some bulbs in the ground this morning.
Hi there! Yay!!! If planting in ground I add fertilizer to the hole at planting. Then when you see growth above the soil you can start a liquid fertilizer
Hello! New subscriber here. I have this same type of plant and it’s growing so tall. I’ve had several sprouts get so tall that it starts bending and that stem will die which makes me sad. Any tips on how to avoid them from bending? I can see yours are just standing nice and tall
Hi there! I'm sorry your plant is having trouble. Is it in a windy location? Does it get enough light? I have stems bend when it's very windy.
If you put them in the ground they will double in size.
Yessss! I'm going to try a few in ground this year for that very reason
@@TheThriftedPlanter Me too...hope you have great success. Can't wait. Mines just starting to come up.
@@none-ya-dam821 do you dig yours up before winter or just leave the bulbs in the ground?
@@mrsshelton226 I'm in Central Florida... I leave them in ground. You only need to dig them up if the ground freezes. It doesn't get that cold here. Might get cold a couple nights and turn leaves a little brown but bounces back spring. I just wrap a blanket around the base on the coldest nights. And FYI.. I have a lot of elephant ears. Hope this helps. Wellspring nursery sells a elephant ear food on Amazon. Especially for elephant ears. Not one browning leaf right now.
👏
Hi Ciearra! Awesome video! I'm a beginner when it comes to plants, and absolutely love the change these Colocasia plants present on a daily basis! I have an Elephant Ear plant I bought from a nursery in July 2021, looked exactly like the ones you present earlier in the video, but winter arrived and I brought it in and now the leaves seem stunted (small) and some don't open fully for weeks! What am I doing wrong? I appreciate any feedback! Thanks! :)
Hello! Thank you for reaching out. You are doing nothing wrong. It's not unusual for plants that have spent the spring and summer outdoors to slow down when they come inside. Make sure they are getting bright light, are kept warm with temps above 46 and watered when the soil is mostly dry. I have two Elephant ears I brought in this winter and they are growing very slowly and when they do put out new leaves they are small. Once late spring comes they will pick back up and yours will too! I hope that helps!
@@TheThriftedPlanter Thank-you soooo much! Relieved now! 😅
@@bestunltd23 Your welcome! I know how it is!
Beautiful plants. What type of soul is used in the pots? Do you have any elephant ear plants indoors, throughout the year?
Thank You! No I dug up the bulbs and stored them over winter.
@@TheThriftedPlanter when do you replant the bulbs after winter is over? Like what month?
@@mrsshelton226 So I like to start my bulbs in February. That way by the time my last frost date they are big. If you want to buy and use new bulbs each year start them as soon as you get them.
How often you use fish fertilizer? Also what dirt mixture you use for your large elephant ear in front of the hibiscus?
I use the fish fertilizer every 1-2 weeks and I use a basic potting mix for the elephant ears. My favorite soil is by Promix
I just planted some bulbs will it take all summer to even grow the first year planting them ???
Hi! You should have some good growth on them by summer and huge by fall depending on your climate and care
very beautiful...will they grow indoors?
Yes, you can definitely grow these as house plants but just know that they transpire a lot and your floors will be wet lol.
@@TheThriftedPlanter thank you
@@clintbelagang1877 Your welcome
Love your video on the Elephant Ears...Do you prefer to put them in pots or in the landscape? I noticed a lot of them in pots, I was thinking about putting it in the landscape but do you think putting it in a pot is better?
I did pots last year because my flower beds weren't ready but this year I will do both. I don't have a preference. I'm guessing the ears in ground will grow bigger
I've grown them for year's in pots. I put one in the ground last year and it's "trunk" is almost as thick as my leg with smaller one's around it. I'm just coming out of winter where I am, so can't wait for this year's growth!
bellas plantas ❤ perdón, ¿para que son los tenedores?
Thank you! They are for squirrels that dig in my pots
I just recently moved to georgia from maine...i love elaphant ears...where can i get some
You can order them online or find a nursery near by and they should have them
What size pot for that huge elephant ear?
Can u go over how u watered when they were bulbs ? I just got some
If you go to my seed starting playlist its all there
I promise I'll water...I don't want my elephant ears to shame me! 😊
Hahah!
Just bought a potted Elephant from my local nursery and I’m excited! They didn’t have any bulbs, any ideas Where can I find bulbs?
Oh cool! I get mine from walmart and Sams club
When you dug.your bulbs up where do you storage it
Hello! I stored them in a cabinet in my home. I've also stored them in my basement as well. You just want a space that is cool and dry
Good job , they look fantastic. I have some babies , we call the elephant ears . The look like this one but they don’t get as large and leaves have that shape but not frilly ( wavy) on the sides of leaf. I wish I knew the proper name.
When you water do you soak the plant completely?
Yes! water deeply
How do the cannas do with them? I want to plant mine with cannas. But wondering if the elephant ears would create to much shade for Them
Good question! They Cannas did good but yes they could have used more sun. They both are water hogs so I was watering them constantly
When the leaf starts to die do you cut it , early or after its on the ground
I like to cut them when they start to die
