Mine are already sprouting with leaves! It’s been so warm!!! I got more to plant this year … thanks for the info on how to plant the bulbs 🤍🖤💚🌸🌺🌿🪴🍀🌳🍀🍀🍀🌿🌿🌿
Thank you for such a simple explanation on how to start them I am so excited I'm starting my first ones this year
Just bought my first elephant ear at meijer yesterday! I'm so excited to plant it! It'll be an indoor plant 😂
Hi Roxana! I purchased an elephant ear bulb/corm from Walmart last weekend and it was $5.42 here in Southern IN! They are huge!
Oh wow! That’s a great deal!
did the same here in NM, same price even. hope it grows. dont know how Wal-mart could kill one of these and was happy to find it.
@@moomoo3031did it ever grow I got one about a week ago from Walmart and she hasn’t grown at all
@pinkjely-bean4582 they take about 2-3 weeks to start showing sprouts but grow quickly after that
Not to sound stupid but are they in the garden area? Never noticed before. Thanks Mary
I love my massive Thai Giant elephant ears and the one thing I've learned over the years is they are are very heavy feeders that thrive with a water-soluble, high-nitrogen fertilizer with a 10-6-4 N-P-K ratio. When I started using that ratio of fertilizer with my Thailand Giant elephant ears they got super massive easily 10ft maybe even bigger even though i grow them all in a storage bin.
Thank you so much for this video! This is the best one I could find on this topic and you answered all of my questions :)
Thank you!! Best explanation for me this is the first time I’ve planted elephant ears
Wonderful! Good luck!
I love them, I love your videos. You have made me realize how much I want a limelight too so I think I may add one this year-finally, yay!!!
Oh I’m so happy to hear that! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for this video. It’s the end of February 2022 and I’m getting ready to plant my elephant ears in a large pot outside. I’m in zone 9b Northern California. This is my first time planting them. I purchased two at Sam’s Club. Your video helped me a lot. Blessings to you and your family 🙏🏾
Perfect! So glad it helped!
I cannot wait to see them in your garden Roxanna 🌸🦋🌸
❤️🌿😘 thank you Jasmine! I’m very excited!
Hi Rox!! I think I'm going to give it a try this year. Thanks for showing us!! 🤗🤗✌️
You should! Good luck!
OMG is it that time already 😍 AHHHHHH!!!! Going to be so beautiful in the garden!!!
I know!! Are you growing any of these?
Thank you !! Very helpful video
Hello Roxana, this is such good timing for me because I ordered my first ever elephant ears from Farmer Gracy in the Netherlands and just got an email to say it’s on its way 🎉🎉 goodness me! I had no idea how HUGE they are 🤣🤣 I’m sure it will come with lots of info but it’s great to see you actually planting it so thanks for sharing ❤️❤️ beautiful aren’t they?
Yes, they are so neat AND huge!
This was really useful, than you. I will be growing them for the first time this year 😊
Good luck! 🍀
Thanks so much….great information and nice presentation.
Very nice video! I just started growing these with my Red Canna plants a very good combo.
Very nice!
Great video! I planted one smaller than that in about a 3 gallon ceramic pot in the spring and just now barely got it out! The roots in there were unbelievable! From now on I'll do in the ground or a 5 gal minimum (zone 9 fl)
They can get really big depending on the container too.
Thank You for the information..I’m down in central Fla and new to growing Anything, but since I’ve started trying to grow my elephant ears, it’s teaching my patience and it’s so Satisfying. Looking forward to more tutorials from you in the Future 👍🏽
Glad to help! Thank you!
If you live in Central Florida you shouldn't need to over-winter your elephant ears. They will come back even in unexpected freezes across the south. I'm in Central Texas and we dont' over-winter them or start them inside -- even in the winter.
Thanks for the info! I found some for sale for $8 here in Indianapolis yesterday. I will try starting it indoors like this!
Have fun! They are so easy to wake up!
Oh I need to check our mejer and see if they have them!!🌸🌸
You should check it out!
I bought a bag of 3 corms at Walmart for 5.95 ! They are on the smaller side but they had larger individual ones for 7.95. Very excited to start gardening here in Virginia zone 7b.
That’s a great deal!
Actually elephant ear TARO corm/bulbs are much cheaper and plentiful at Chinese/Asian grocery stores. And large pots are $1.25-$3 at Dollar Tree. I also use plastic waste baskets for flower pots. I just punch holes in the bottom or a couple inches up the side.
Home depot has 5 avacado sized bulbs for 14.98 and a HUGE cantaloupe sized bulb for 14.98. Much cheaper than previous years.
Sounds about right, I found some at Lowes and HD on this size for around $15, but Meijer was $5 cheaper... get those deals!
Its now March 15th, 2024 and the large bulb is still 14.98
7 smaller ones also 14.98. At home depot
I'm growing my first one indoors this year too & I'm in MI. Just started so I hope it does grow lol.
They take a while until you see something sprout... but they definitely start putting lots of roots first! Just keep giving them water and heat here and there.
These plants are very strong. I live in zone 9 and we have a very long growing season here in Texas. I leave mine in the ground and as soon as it starts to warm up they peek out. My only problem is it needs a lot of water and some shade. Happy gardening 🥰
Thank you! I Imagine your heat will be too much for the summer for them, they are lovely!
Me too. I live in Central Texas zone 9 and never over winter my elephant ears. Even after those last crazy snow and ice storms in 2021, last December and this February. I just watered the pots they were in and they came back. Same thing with the hoards of them that grow all along the banks of the rive, lakes, creeks and ponds here.
Shade and lots of water. That's the important information.
I just got a 4 pack of really nice sized ones at Home Depot for 14.99!!!
I know the vid is old , but I was able to find a mega elephant ear plant ,, plus a standard size .. I’m gonna use the side of my house for some shade , but start them in a bucket too .. thanks for the info on top v/s bottom .. & the world corm, who knew LOL ..thanks & happy growing
Thank you!
I’m going to start my elephants ears indoors and actually maybe keep them in here 🤔🤔 thanks for the video…this is my first time growing them 🌱
Great idea!
I was thinking of getting some of these. They’re perennial here in 7b and I think I’ll plant one with some grasses near my dry river bed.
Oh that’s awesome! I think zone 7 is the sweet spot for gardening!
@@SoilandMargaritas except August. 😀
Hola Roxana, te quería decir que my Lowes where I work at, just put the colocasia bulbs fifty percent off. We still had a ton left over from our inventory definitely worth a shot to see if your Lowes still has some as well.
Great video! Thank you. I think I'm in the same zone as you 6A b. Southern Illinois. So when would you bring in the elephant ears and do you just keep them in the same pot and put them out next year? I guess I'd like to know how to winter over? Thank you
Im in MN and do the same thing with my canna and dahliahs, tto!
Awesome! I’ll be doing this for dahlias this year again but I start my cannas from seed.
I paid $79 at Ace hardware for mine, it was sprouted but next time I’m going to buy corms instead
Right now 2 large bulbs at Sam's club for $12
Thank you for making this! I got a 2 pack of huge bulbs at Costco for $15. I gave one to my friend who has a place in the yard that is soggy. I saw they are good for that and don’t mind wet feet outside! I got 2 trash cans at Ikea that are probably 3 gallons. I’m hoping to find the deep liners. I use the dollar tree cake covers upside down.
Great ideas!!!
Mine from last year were weird when I went to dig up and store, the bottom half of the tuber was gone but had babies around it which have survived in the basement but I wonder if they will come out as big as their parent. I was thinking it would be like regular elephant ears and be viable plus give babies. I guess I better get those started. Love your videos.
Hey, Yes, they do give babies and those will get bigger and bigger as the years go, depending on how wet or if they went thru a freeze, sometimes those corms can get soggy or even go bad, when I dug out mine last year a piece of it was soggy but I had a bunch of babies, I meant to save them but I forgot them and they were taken by the weather :( I am going to do my best to save these because they can get expensive.
If you try your local international asian store they sell these for £6 for 1 kg. About 12 smaller bulbs.
You know, I was at my prefered local mexican store and I saw some HUGE bulbs there, I had never noticed them before.
I just started my elephant ears in the basement! (Long Island here … )
Two colossus bulbs at Costco for $19
I just got em at Sam's today in a bag, 2 for $12.98 😊
@@divMINOR hahahah show off !!! Enjoy them!
the moment you said soil and margaritas you won my trust
Welcome! 🌿
👍👍😊😄
I would like to meet you and get some tips from you, I live in Monrovia, IN. West of plainfield , IN.
I planted mine in the ground and they’re huge! I’m in zone 8 though. It’s right outside the back porch door and the leaves flutter in the breeze. They scare me many times a day because from the corner of my eye they look like some large animal running in my backyard (I have a miniature dachshund who could be eaten or carried off😆). I’ve been thinking of moving them somewhere else.
Oh awesome! The leaves are divine!
Lol!!! I think the same thing ! The first summer I had them on my deck I always thought it was a person at night!!!!
@@kathyd1010 🤣🤣🤣 it makes my heart stop!
What if your bulb has tons of dead roots already attached, do I need to leave it be or take those off? It's a Mojito Bulb. thank you!
Leave them on!
Hey I just bought two of these from Lowe's today! Do you leave your elephant ears in the pots when you put them outside?
Hey, no… I transplant them into the ground like any other plant, if I was gonna use a container instead of the ground, I would use a large container bigger than this to pot it up
@@SoilandMargaritas Thank you!
I’m planting mine in a large container and keeping it on my deck for the summer. could I underplant this plant with something??
@@jhadz7507 absolutely! I would probably choose a large container so all the roots are not fighting for space. It would look nice with some thing that doesn’t get too tall.
I would like to grow these all winter in my sunroom, but I'm concerned because they drip from the leaves. Do you know if it's water or sap?
I don't think is sap, but mine are never long enough inside for me to see this.
Hey Roxana! After burying the corm, do you water? I've already buried mine in a pot and watered well, but now I'm worried it might rot since it doesn't have roots yet.
Just gently, they need a bit of moisture but not a lot, just keep them in a warm room with a damp soil and they should be good.
@Soil and Margaritas thank you! 😊
Hello, do you have any recommendations on how to transplant them from pot to raised bed? I have already done that but not sure if I did it right or wrong..
I do it just like I would do any other plant in a container... just make a whole as big as the container and put it there.
I understand but if I am covering it with little more soil, would it be okay?? Do they have eyes or something that should not be covered?? I am just wondering and I have no clue about it..
@@hemalsgolwala I’ll make sure to show you how I do mine in the next week or so
Did'nt cut the stem close enough when winterizing my elephant leaf bulb, It's about an inch pertruding from the bulb. Can I Cut it closer to the bulb?
It does not matter really.
Thank You So Very Much👍
Update on how your elephant ears look after about 3 wks??
Coming up soon!
Should I dig them up for winter?
If you live in a cold zone definitely!!!! Otherwise the corm will rot in the ground.
Where can I watch an easy video to show the plant as it grows
🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
YUP..... I always make sure the potting soil is damp all the time.
Yooo, Ma'am!
Did you make a 2nd video?
I made several videos after this one, look into this playlist for the seedling UPDATEs and you can see how they are doing there. ruclips.net/p/PLSpldx7tGv23ZpGyXNg_w8ePEWowiJ6R4
