My top tips: use dexton countertops. It doesn't burn, scratch or absorb oils or acids. Don't follow fashion or in the future everyone will know exactly how old your kitchen is. Always put sinks and cooker hobs on the same wall,so no crossing a room with hot pans. Always go for bigger sinks, those piddly small round ones are a total waste of time and don't use stainless steel for sinks or tops,to avoid having to constantly wipe dry and triple dry them.If possible avoid top cupboards ( unless you have extremely looong legs). Don't make huge islands that take you all day to walk around. If possible make as large as possible a walk in pantry. Avoid cupboards but use draws. A boiling water tap is very handy. No one seems to care about where to put those wet tea towels and hand towels. Ask them about it !!! Please do use open shelving to display your treasures. Do I design kitchens? Nope. I'm just a very savvy ( young at heart) 70 year old with years of experience. Ciao.
Huge fan of 40”+ trough sinks! 🙌
There is a lot of sense in what you have mentioned. Drawers are far superior to cupboards, I am going to try to not have any cabinets above the bench and have display shelves. Instead. Sink and cook top next to each other also makes sense to me. Also hving an area where the brekky things, tea, coffee and kettle are all together also makes sense.
Julie, your channel is so underrated that it's an injustice. I *love* your content, and thank you so much for all your hard work!
I agree. She’s so great at explaining that you feel you are in a masterclass
Nobody is underrating Julie, and her channel continues to grow.
Thank you for watching Jo! I appreciate the kindness and support! Share the videos to your design loving friends! 🙏🏻☺️
@@sarah3998 its not gonna be here for long??
You're awesome, Julie, in all your generosity - in sharing exquisitely helpful information!!!
I've had a mirrored backsplash since 1990! Nothing could be easier to keep clean and it brings so much more light to the prep areas! I love it!
Sounds fabulous Laurene 😍🙌🏻
I felt like I paid bucks for a Master Class. Your channel is the cream of the crop! Thannkkk youuu!
Thank you for watching and the support Stella 🙏🏻☺️
I have seen kitchen backsplashes that were beautiful wallpaper, photograph or mural with protective glass covering it paired with a stainless steel countertop. Personality on a budget!
Yes, a beautiful way to use wallpaper and inexpensive! Thank you for watching Melody 🙏🏻☺️
Love this idea!
So helpful, especially the very end when you talk about keeping either the backsplash or the countertop simple and the opposite with more pattern or interest. I get that. It's like fashion, If you show a bunch of leg, make the top more conservative and vice versa.
Exactly! Or wear a huge statement necklace, then dial back on the earrings or none at all. You got it Elise 🙌🏻
Thank you for this video! I love that you include so many examples of what you're talking about and leave them on for a bit to let our eyes take them in.
Thank you for watching Sweet! I appreciate the feedback 🙏🏻☺️
I'm new to the design world and I always said I couldn't do it. Thanks to RUclips I've gained a little faith in myself and have started a few projects. I must say I just found your channel and this is my absolute favorite hands down! Thank you for the great content. Keep it coming!
Aw thank you so much Jackie! Hope I can empower you to create a dream space you love waking up to 🙏🏻☺️
Julie, I have been binge watching your videos. THANK YOU for all the work you put into explaining interior design. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for watching Diana 🙏🏻☺️
Like the emphasis on pictures to SHOW the design principles being explained and less talk. Very helpful
Hope these examples can help you visualize the changes in your own space Rebecca 👍🏻☺️
I especially liked the kitchen with sage green cupboards, white tile backsplash and minimal wood shelves. I also love the patterned tile! I like the Zhelige tiles a lot too! I am going to redo my kitchen, so this video is very helpful!
I love green for the kitchen! It’s so chic and cozy 😍
This is by far the most comprehensive, all encompassing coverage on the subject of kitchen countertops and backsplashes. We are all different and not everyone wants a "luxe elegant look". You brought in the artisan options and made room for all the possibilities! Plus giving room for variations on the ever popular subway tiles. I'm a designer myself and have only used typical uniform subway tile on one project, an oyster color artisan style with medium gray grout. I love the more artisan subway tiles and plan on using again, along with a more decorative tile over the sink and stove as an insert for some wow factor! I also love that you dont try to be too cutesy in your presentation, inserting alot of "omg's" or "That's just got to go!" Theres a place for "personality" but it can be too much, imo, and you hit just the right note and balance! I like that you tone down the overly enthusiastic hyped up rhetoric and that's coming from someone who is and can be super enthusiastic when it comes to design! And YES, please do one on bathrooms!! If you haven't already! Thanks for great content!
Thank you for watching and the thoughtful feedback S! Just hope I’m doing right by the variety of viewers/ homeowners out there! 🙌🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu I feel you are doing exactly that! Btw, I loved your diy budget bathroom makeover! Stunning results! It showed even designers don't always have to go for the highest price finishes yet can have spectacular results showcasing their creativity over just high cost. It made you all the more relatable to the average homeowner who can draw off of your skills and creativity while not breaking the bank. Most people can also relate to putting off doing certain things while balancing babies, kids in general and all the various other day to day "cares of this world"! You as a young mom are doing an amazing job at it all!
Now I know why I've been hating on the busy back splash over granite/quartz. Thanks you for simplifying the choices and the clear examples
When the countertop stone is subtle, you can go wild with the backsplash without it competing 👍☺️
Ive watch a TON of interior design videos and I have to say, you have showed one of the best examples by far. Thank you!
Thank you for watching Anyeli 🙏🏻☺️
This is the 5th time I'm coming back to this video. Thank you, this is so helpful.
Thank you for watching Karolina 🙏🏻😊
Great explanation on how to select the backsplash/countertop, just what I needed at the right time!!
Awesome, hope it helps whittle down the decision 👍🏻
Thank you Julie, bathroom video would be great. Love this one 💕
Thank you for watching Dianne 🙏🏻☺️
Quartzite can be another gorgeous, super durable natural stone alternative to marble that's not talked about as much as quartz. It's usually pricier though. We did a gorgeous linear quartzite in our last home (white macaubas) that was a showstopper. I'm thinking about doing quartzite in our upcoming build as well, as the maintenance of marble with our family isn't something I'm ready to commit to. Your channel is just fantastic! It was a quick subscribe for me! Thank you for your valuable content! 💖
I love quartzite, definitely prefer it over granite since you can find some beautiful patterns and veining Stephanie 👍🏻😍
We got a Quartzsite remnant for a small project in our homeschool room and I think I love it more than the marble in the kitchen.
Мы
We just purchased meridian quartzite to be installed in our kitchen! I can't wait!!
Hi Stephanie. I am a Brit living in Spain Europe and will be gutting and replacing my kitchen this year. I have been agonising about which material to use for my counter top and back splash and gaze at the marbles with lust but like you I am going to pass it over due to the maintenance and staining, we drink a lot of red wine, use citrus a lot and many other organic things that will etch into the marble. I have heard of Quartzite but I am unclear is this is the same as Quartz, just a different way of saying it?. I need to be really clear on the differences as I will need to explain to my Stone yard guy what I want. He is not the most sophisticated as its a small rural mountain village and his choices are limited. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Julie for a brilliant channel.
I love your design Julie. I can watch them for hours. Thank you for sharing your ideas
Thank you for watching and your support Evelyn 🙏🏻☺️
Julie, your videos are outstanding S is your generosity in sharing them with us. Thank you so much
Thank you for watching Jeannie, I appreciate your kindness and support 🙏🏻☺️

Thank you for watching Norma 🙏🏻☺️
Thank you for the outstanding content, Julie!
Thank you for watching Damian! 🙏🏻☺️
You put so much into each video. I really appreciate all you share on this channel.
Thank you so much Gina! I hope to share content that you can use as a consistent resource in your design process! 🙏🏻😊
Perfect timing Julie as I’m trying to decide on the backsplash.
Same!
Thank you for watching Joy! Let me know if you have any questions! 👍🏻☺️
Thank you SO much for this video. I have a builder's grade kitchen and I wanna change it SO bad. However this is not my forever home. I was seriously considering redoing it on the cheap. Like maybe JUST changing the countertop and backsplash. Now that I've seen this video I am SO inspired as to what is possible. I told my husband we don't have to do this kitchen. It works fine and we can use paint to update it a little. And with the money we make on this home (we are doing a LOT of other improvements) we can invest in a kitchen like these for our next home. Put $100 in the "kitchen fund" savings before the video was over. We really cook so much and love entertaining. This is so helpful. That damn zellige tile might have stolen my heart.
I feel you Anne! I want to redo my entire kitchen as well, not because I don’t love it. But because I have so many other looks I want too! Ah next house 🙌🏻😆
Great job, Julie! I would definitely appreciate a bathroom video. My dream kitchen includes emerald zellige tile.
Ooh that emerald zellige gets me every time 💚
Hey Julie love you modern style, and love to see your videos of bathroom styles
So glad you mentioned stainless steel for countertops! One of the homes we lived in had a small portion of industrial grade stainless in the kitchen…probably was installed in the ‘60’s when the house was last renovated before our purchase…but it aged beautifully and was so handy! My concern these days is that the quality of the stainless steel material available on the market today can be poor if isn’t made in the USA…..
Definitely use your vendor as a resource and see what their customers are purchasing for stainless steel Claudia! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Yes, please do a video about the bathrooms as well!!! Thank you for the great content.
Thank you for watching Marina 🙏🏻☺️
Yes, please do a bathroom floor, counter& backsplash video!
I have it, it’s called timeless bathroom trends Jane ☺️
I love a thick wood butcher block. It's truly timeless, warm, and being able to sand down any flaws is handy. It just requires a periodic oil.
I love the warmth of wood, especially mixed in with a natural stone like white veined marble 😍
This video couldn’t have come at a better time for me. Currently trying to pick a backsplash for a new kitchen. Very helpful.
Awesome 👏🏻 hope you got some good inspiration Gems
Great video. So helpful. I have a fantastic bold tile that I was hoping to use as a backsplash. Now I think I know how to do it.
That’s the best! When inspiration strikes, watch out! Full speed ahead Robert 🙌
I feel like I've been waiting for this my whole like!!! Can't wait to watch after work!!!😍😍😍
Awesome 👏🏻 thank you for watching and your support Karen 🙏🏻💕
The Queen strikes again. Amazing video as usual.
Thank you Queen 🙏🏻☺️
Wow, you selected such beautiful kitchens for us to see. I will be watching this one a few times. Thank you.
Thank you for watching Velvet 🙏🏻☺️
I feel like I’m probably the only person in the world that doesn’t care for the slab of stone look as a backsplash. I just did my kitchen and ended up with Bedrosian square Chloe tile. My countertop is Mont Blanc quartzite. I questioned my choice because it’s a little trendy at the moment but I absolutely love how it turned out!
I chose black glass because I had the same feeling. I know I would be tired of the marble look very quickly. I kind of think its a fad, a beautiful one, but still a fad. :-)
If you love it, it will last! 🙌🏻☺️
Love to see suggestions for the master bathroom including flooring countertops and backsplash. Thanks! Great job!
Check out the video for timeless bathroom combinations Elaine! Tons of inspiration 👍🏻☺️
The herringbone subway tile is making its way into my kitchen Reno. Brilliant. Thank you
Isn’t it gorgeous?! 😍
Carrara slap, with gold everything. Black looks great for a bar. White kitchen so you see the dirt or uninvited guests. Biggest thank you from Perú.
Great examples! Yes please for bathroom countertop/backsplash ideas.
Thank you for watching Laura 🙏🏻☺️
Loved the versatility and enduring style of subway tiles - Thank You.
A total classic Antoinette 👍🏻 Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
wow!!! thanks a lot! You are my inspiration, especially the list of designs that are very up to date.
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻😊
I mean you continuously bring some top notch content. My kitchen is really small but I got so many great ideas from this vid. Would love to see it expanded to the bath. Awesome work!
Thank you for watching HR! Want to give my small kitchen a few updates after making this video 🙌🏻☺️
Always a wealth of inspiration. Thank you for this post!!
Thank you for watching Leslie 🙏🏻☺️
Love to see the bathroom combos! So many beautiful choices!!!! My head is spinning!!
That’s the best! More options = more customized looks to suit your needs Valeri 🙌🏻
I appreciate the pictures you put in all of your videos.
Thank you for watching Yvette! 🙏🏻☺️
Hi Julie! I loved this video. Very timely to add to my knowledge. I learned a lot today. Happy August💕
Thank you for watching Beth! Happy August 😎
We did a 40s retro inspired kitchen and did light quartz counters with light grey veining paired with a rectangular zellige tile backsplash with a penny round accent line in white and black that accents our pot filler. While the backsplash does mean a little more maintenance since the grout, I wouldn’t change a thing since I love the look!
It’s all about loving that kitchen when you walk in! Fabulous 🙌🏻
Love the white backsplash and white vountertops with light colored cabinets
Light and bright makes the kitchen look happy! ☺️
Love all your videos. Redoing our kitchen. It is a beach house and I want to use bid as in something like 12by 12 hexagon tiles for the floor. Was hoping to use some kind of color as in blues/greens but very muted/light. If I do that can I do a backsplash with the same shape tile in miniature?
Thanks for such a helpful video. Your last points on subway tiles have definitely given me something to think about as I consider kitchen backsplash options.
Vertical stacked is one of my favorite installations for subway. Thank you for watching Chauncy 👍🏻☺️
So love this video. Really helped me figure out that I want slab backsplash. Thank you. Now to find a contractor
Cruise around your neighborhood and see if anyone is remodeling Cecelia! Look for contractor trucks, etc. I’ve found a ton of contractors and specialists that way 👍☺️
It's probably overdone, but that all white kitchen at 10:48 is beautiful. I'm partial to shaker style cabinets and there's just something about brass against white that I find so elegant and timeless. I wouldn't mind dual toned cabinets either though. A navy/emerald green on bottom paired with white on top w/brass hardware would also look nice.
Navy and emerald can definitely read as neutrals in my book Mandy 😍
All ur
Ideas welcome
Pl. Give your
Valuable suggestions
We are waiting....
Too good.. Thanx julie... 😍
Thank you for watching Thangamani 🙏🏻☺️
You are just amazing; completely on a different level from the rest of the field. Keep up the great work!!!
Thank you for watching Enoch! I appreciate your support 🙏🏻☺️
Love all of these. In my kitchen we did dark grey cabinets on the bottom, white on the top, white countertops and then black glass with white striped (zebra/tiger) lines in it. So beautiful. It was custom but so worth it. Ithink I would have gotten tired of the granite/marble look after a while. The glass is unique and I am so glad. Anyway, its an alternative. thanks Julie for all that you do. :-)
Thank you for watching Sheryl! I have patterned exotic granite in my kitchen- there’s a lot of movement, a LOT of look, but it really does speak to my style. I live there. No need to please anyone else but my family 🙌🏻☺️
I'm seriously the porcelain slab counter/backsplash for the kitchen, but also for a walk in shower. No grout lines to discolor. Yes, please do a bathroom version of this video. I would also like to see kitchen and bathroom floor pairings with counters.
Porcelain slabs are hot right now- both for kitchens and bathrooms 👍🏻
Aren’t they very slippery?
@@kathleensmith4819 I meant slabs on the shower walls. You're right that a slab floor would be too slippery!
I have granite and always loved it.. had it in 2 houses. This house i did a different backsplash and did glass with a design over the stove.
Glass is so easy to clean and maintain 👍🏻
@@JulieKhuu it really is... my floors are turning out beautiful.. plus I'm decluttering ..
The artisan tiles seems like a pretty interesting and more affordable option!! I'm so glad I watched this video cuz now apart frm marble, I'm also intrigued by Zellige tiles!! 😍😍😍
They’re gorgeous up close and installed! 🤩
Loved this video. I have a tiny galley kitchen and want to try a modern minimalist look for backsplash and countertops.
Solid slab would be fab and open up the kitchen with less materials to compete Sander 👍🏻☺️
Another great video. You always hit the areas I'm working on counter top for basement. After watching I came up with my color black and white with gold knobs. Thanks you so much, you're great and creative.
Thank you for watching Yvonne 🙏🏻☺️
I came across your video from 3 years ago when I can't make up my mind for backsplash. I want a timeless backsplash, I lean towards subway tile for my white cabinet and white quartz countertop but I am concerned it might make kitchen too white. Your video is very helpful. I decided to go with light grey subway tile lay horizontal. a
Julie- YOUR CHANNEL IS FREAKING AWESOME. I picked an extremely bold granite and now I am second guessing myself. Dark and moody and I planned to use on my island, countertops and backsplash. I am afraid I should not waterfall the island because it may be way too much. My kitchen is small, so I am thinking I could get away with it. How do you determine if the slab is overpowering. My cabinets are SW Extra White and the granite is white eclipse/Copacabana. Thank you
If you’re running the same granite up the backsplash, I would say nix the waterfall. If you’re only using Copacabana on the island, I say waterfall is the right move. But on the backsplash, perimeter countertop, AND island WITH waterfall may be a tad much. Too much of a good thing doesn’t make it feel special anymore. Just my thought, but you DO YOU! Go with your gut 🙌
I love your videos, lots of wonderful ideas. However, I am renovating my kitchen and pretty much everything is new but I am having a very hard time deciding on my backsplash. I wonder if you can give me some advice how to match up fantasy brown countertop for the right backsplash?
What would be the best pick?
Julie!, this was so helpful! Big thanks all the way from Australia!
I loved all the selection! I have wanted a white kitchen for years. You have opened my eyes to the new hues, Love them, I am a new subcriber.😊
Even off white is lovely if pure white seems too stark Anne! 😍 Thank you for watching 🙏🏻💕
Oh... I miss Back Bay in Newport Beach. I had a horse that was boarded there and we rode every day after school there. So beautiful.
Sounds dreamy Keri 😍
So many beautiful designs (hate the huge veins though)! But I feel I would get tired of bold patterns or colours very soon. Since I could not commit to any tile whatsoever, we installed a simple restaurant kitchen type Silver Aluminium slab and I love it. This way we can play with the other walls and change colors more often
Simple, durable, low maintenance, what’s not to love about aluminum 🙌🏻
Hi Julie
I think a big factor is the personality of the cook. Some people work happily with lots of clutter - cannisters sitting to the back of their benchtops, spice racks in view, mugs on hooks, etc, while others like benches to be completely clear & everything out of sight when not in use.
For the first personality type I think they are likely to be attracted to busy tile patterns but if they go with that, will end up with a kitchen that is too busy (looks messy). I would encourage them to go plain.
For the latter type I would encourage the opposite - you want your kitchen to have warmth & personality when you walk in.
As we all know the kitchen is the hub of the home. A recent study showed a family's movements (each member got a personal tracker) & the density of movement/time spent in the kitchen was really evident. So - it sets the tone for the home & you want all family & visitors to feel comfortable where possible.
Excellent points Wendy! My style is minimal and clean in the kitchen because I know how fast those countertops accrue clutter 🙈
Hi Julie, I have an L shape kitchen ( with an island) and my stove is closer to the corner where there is no cabinet on the side wall. I have the recommended minimum counter working space between the stove and the side wall. I am concerned there could be cooking splashes on that side wall. Should I continue the tiles onto the side wall only for the space between the countertop and upper cabinet for the depth of the counter top or should I tile the entire height of the side wall ? Thanks for your tip, really appreciate it.
Yes please do a Bathroom counter and backsplash video. My favorite is to take the countertop material up and make it the backsplash.
Clean and visually impactful AD 🙌🏻
By FAAAAAARRRRR the BEST, IMFORMATIVE video about countertop and backsplash I've watched, GOOD JOB 👍 Just subscribed.
Thank you so much! That’s a huge compliment 🙏☺️
Loved this video!!! And, yes, please do a video for the same concept in bathrooms. Thank you!
Thank you for watching SS! 🙏🏻☺️
Hi Julie, love all the tips. A bathroom video would be great. What would you recommend for a small bathroom if I want to add a darker tile?
Either go all dark with light fixtures or allow the tile to be the only dark plane Tsyrae. Check out my small space series- the episode on tiny bathrooms may help guide you 👍🏻
Yes please, Julie, would like bathroom tiles combinations will greatly help as we are starting a bathroom renovation by September. On your other question, although, I have a white tiles and backsplash in our kitchen, in this video, I like your photo with the dark blue herringbone tile with wooden shelves not sure what the gray counter is in that pic. 😅 Thanks again, been doing my research and finding inspirations for the bathroom reno. Great contents, Julie! More power and God bless! 😘
Probably quartz since you can find uniform slabs. Thank you for watching Chris! 🙏🏻☺️
Another informative video! Big new fan. I'm remodeling an adobe style house that has 12" by 12" natural wood beams, but only a 9 foot ceiling and only one window in the kitchen. So, cabinets and square center island will be basic shaker white w stainless steel appliances to make it bright. But where to add a focal point and a little pop? Replacing the dated flush mount lights and choosing a backsplash are a challenge! Julie and followers, please weigh in.
Consider the ceiling the fifth wall. Play up the lighting, wall sconces would also be effective in bringing more light into the space 👍🏻
Julie love your videos! I'm doing my kitchen and chose quartz gold calacatta for my countertop. What will you suggest to do for my backslash im having a hard time trying to figure out what style, please help!!. 🤗😘
Ooh that’s so luxurious Alicia! I would cut the same slab or white Zellige would be fabulous 🤩
So many ideas🤗can’t wait for the bathroom video🌺
Thank you for watching Tru 🙏🏻☺️
I love ur ideas. They are elegant and sustainable. Thanks 💐

Hello Julie, thank you so much, that was amazing and help me a lot. And yes I would like the bathroom version 🙌👌🤗🙏🥰
Bathroom episode is now up 👍😊
Yes, I would like a countertop and backsplash video for the bathroom-along w the other parts of the bathroom, like floor and shower.
It’s coming up Jane! 👍🏻☺️
Hi good morning. Can I use same tile for kitchen floor and backsplash. My tile size is 24/48”. I have white cabinets and white countertops.
Julie, your videos have helped guide me in remodeling our home. What color of grout do you recommend w/ white subway tile, hale navy cabinets, butcher block countertops, and white walls? I am so thankful for your channel!
White or off white so it disappears Kelly. Hope that helps!
Yes. Please bathroom countertop and backsplash video. 😊
That video is up now! It’s called timeless bathroom combinations 😊
Really loved your video. I would like to know more about the big slabs since they are easier to clean.😀😊❣

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL AND INFORMATIVE!...LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! 💜💜💜
Thank you so much Ellen! 🙏🏻☺️
This was an amazing video. Zellige is also a bit magical. It glimmers like fish scales especially when the grouting is really subtle. My only concern is that it may date quickly or I would replace my kitchen tiles in a heartbeat.
I think Zellige is here to stay Sarah. Subway was having a “moment” but everyone still specifies it. Great, simple, versatile materials have staying power 👍🏻
Great video! I would love to see a on bathroom counter tops and backsplashes! ❤️
New bathroom trends video coming up next week!
Love this Jhulie! Love your blouse too!
Thank you for watching Irish! 🙏🏻☺️
thanks for the vid and now i know what i can do with my kitchen reno, looking forward for the bathroom ideas.
Thank you for watching Gary ☺️🙏🏻
We are doing a kitchen remodel in the spring so now looking for cabinet, countertops, sink, faucet, backsplash and appliances. Kitchen is a small U shape space that two people can barely cook in. We have a lightbox in the ceiling that makes the space even smaller. Needless to say, we will demo that lightbox and install a few canned LED lights. We've asked our contractor to provide under the cabinet lighting to brighten up the space. There is a garden window that provides natural light during the day. We love to cook so looking to invest on quartz counter. Wifey loves the feeling of wood. I love the idea of stainless steel for prep area but honestly, if I can surround the 30" induction cooktop, I would. What color do you recommend to make this small space bigger? How about frosted glass upper cabinet doors instead of solid wood? Backsplash or paint?
Check out my video on small kitchens for more color and finish ideas Carlos! Great move with the glass uppers- it will reflect more light than painted wood cabinets. Backsplash is a must for wet areas, but if you choose to have a standard backsplash and paint the rest- choose the same color so there’s no visual break. Hope that helps!
I'm in love with your kitchen too! Which Zellige tiles did you use exactly? Are these the weathered white Zellige tiles? Casablanca white or pure white from Zia? Thank you!
I used Weathered White from Clé tile for my clients new build Kristina ☺️
