Officer Robert Rialmo killed Quintonio LeGrier as well as 55-year-old Bettie Jones. Cenk Uygur and Hannah Cranston hosts of The Young Turks discuss.

Officer Robert Rialmo filed the staggering suit Friday over his contested killing of 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier, a Northern Illinois University sophomore. The officer also accidentally killed Bettie Jones, 55, who was standing nearby, according to police.
The slain student’s family immediately slammed the suit, which comes amid the exploding scandal over deadly, racially motivated police tactics in Chicago.”

I don't know what happened in the initial incident, but this lawsuit makes me very suspicious of the officer's account.

Because murder requires intent. And legally if you are trying to protect yourself from a person and open fire on them. If the bullet travels through the target and hits a bystander, it's the fault of the attacker because the attacker created the situation that requires the shooting in the first place.

I have no faith in cops anymore. I got in my car one morning looked in my rear view mirror and was shocked to find a man sitting in my backseat. I jumped out terrified, but then noticed he was asleep, so I reached in got my keys and purse out and ran inside to get my husband. Not once did we consider calling the cops. We were afraid they would make it worse. My husband woke him up, told him to get out, and called a cab. He was super drunk. It's sad that the people we pay to protect and serve us can't be trusted in times of need.

I know that feeling! My daughter has a crazy neighbor whose mother called the next day and said she’s been on a rampage for weeks! The lady claimed there were leaves that my daughters husband had blown on her yard. Their yard looks like an abandoned house with the house boarded up from a hurricane 3 years ago! The neighbor called the police & he arrived and that lady was still screaming at my daughter! I yelled “stop already we’ve got this” meaning we had an officer there to take care of the situation and she needed to stop yelling at us! Well this officer decides to yell at ME!!! Mind you I’m 63 yr old grandmother, my daughter is 38 and we are both Hispanic. The lady is 50 and white! Two police cars pull up... all white. First he yells at US & then asks my daughter if she has mental issues. When she said no he says “then why are you playing into this?” So I’m assuming the whacko told him she was manic and bipolar when he walked up! I didn’t hear that! But I do know in 3 minutes they managed to make US look like the aggressors when she was totally in a full blown rage. I have always supported Leo’s but not anymore! That whole thing was bs and showed me how they can turn anything around to fit their narrative.

This scares me to death. My son has epilepsy and pre seizure becomes confussed and scared unable to respond. 2 years ago he was in a pre seizure state and pacing outside at night. I was alone and scared he would wonder off and or fall during the seizure. I called 911 for help to get him to a safe location. They showed up rushed him in our yard yelled at him and when he didnt answer them( he cant talk or understand during late preseizure hence why I called) they threatened to tazer him. I screamed his medical info. They grabbed him handcuffed him and dragged him across my yard to the street. The most unsafe place to have a seizure on concrete. They didnt believe me and demanded he talk refused to call EMS. My son was crying and talking jibberish at this point think he had a small seizure during the drang but to dark to see. They said he was Skitzo and if they called EMS they would have him commited. Then said talk right so we can leave you here with mom. I seen my sons eyes roll back and knew seizure was starting he was still hand cuffed. When he fell back and stiffened arms trying to jerk they scrambled to get cuffs off and said relax kid so I can remove them. Duh he cant relax. They cont to harrase and refused to call EMS post seizure. My son crying slurred speech ect still screamed he was acting Skitzo. Finally after 1.5hrs called EMS who to said he was faking it and this was not seizure activity until arriving at hospital and my son cleared up and no memory of last 3 hrs. Needless to say I never call for help anymore unless he stops breathing. This is just one altercation many others as well. Cant trust most of them and know they will kill him one day.
Time to move to Canada.

The fact that you called 911 and the police show up to not help, but terrorize the both of you, is truly shameful. The fact that during the situation your son's life was on the line not only because of the seizure, but because of the chance of the cops possibly shooting and killing him, is enough to make any person in that situation not want to call the cops ever again.
As a member of the law enforcement community, I despise the actions of this officer. People are so misinformed into thinking that all of us are like this. I can understand Officer Realmo's panic but we are trained(sherif department) to use tazers when possible and avoid drawing my weapon. This happens due to incorrect officer training. This is what needs to change.

The last time I remember calling the cops in an emergency was when someone broke down the front door to my apartment building, and began running up stairs towards my apartment and then tried to break into my next door neighbors apartment before leaving with nothing. Called the cops twice and the second time around they said I had to stop calling because I was "clogging up the phone lines." Mind you this is at 3 AM on a week night, most likely than not its a rather easy night for cops. Yet no cops appeared and the next day we went down to the station to ask what happened and they said they never received any calls from our phone # or any calls to our address. I don't trust cops anymore in all honesty, why should I after experiencing this mess up? It's uncalled for.

+Chris Grabenhorst it was very real, the cops in my city in Jersey have a bad rep for taking their time to respond and often times just not showing up. We waited with one other neighbor of ours for 2 hours for the police to show up. Luckily no one got hurt, but the cops refused to show up or even admit they got the calls.
I am 58 years old and never arrested. "Until" I filed a complaint against the atlanta Georgia police dept. Because they kept telling me I was aggravating them calling them every time my rental house was burglarized. They told me to stop bothering them.
