I wish I had never been baptized into the Mormon church. I was 8 years old. I had no choice.

  • One of the big reasons I think that Mormonism is a cult is because I was baptized when I was 8.
It's a big deal in Mormon culture to talk about how, "wow, we're so glad our 8-year-old is choosing to be baptized!"
    I didn't have a choice!
    I couldn't NOT get baptized.
And then, yet, when I became old enough to actually make decisions for myself and choose to leave the church, I had a relative tell me that,
"Well, now you're untrustworthy 'cause you broke your baptismal covenants." That I made when I was 8.
Like, it's a cult. It's a cult when you are a kid and you're made to be part of this religion, and then you're not allowed to leave with dignity.
    That's a cult.

What about the Catholic Church that baptizes babies? Is that a cult?

I don't think baptizing children is ok. They aren't able to consent.

Do you want a big party and have everyone praising you and loving you or do you want to disappoint everyone and let everyone down. That's all you know when you're 8.

Exactly! I was so eager to please.
My grandparents explicitly told me that they wouldn't give birthday money to grandkids who didn't do all the church stuff (missions, married in the temple, etc.). They told me that when I was a teenager, but that vibe of "you only get rewarded if you do what we want" was always there.
Saying "no" was never something I was taught to do. It's something I'm still working on getting better at to this day!

I knew a guy in high school who grew up LDS. He said when he was old enough they asked him if he wanted to be baptized. He said no which is reallt rare for a kid, and grew up unreligious in a religious home by choice.

I have a few friends who's 8 year olds said no and they didn't set it up. One never chose to get baptized and is an adult now and not part of the church and has a wonderful relationship with her family.

Good! I hope the culture continues to change to allow more freedom of choice without the threat of shunning and rejection.

@@unpackingmormonism3187 that was really never a thing. I absolutely agree it did happen, but it was absolutely never a practice of the church and is also done in an insane amount of cultures and religions. There's some religions that kill their children if they go outside of their religious beliefs. To pretend like this is not only solely an LDS issue but also that the church encourages this practice is at best projecting your own hurt and at worst just plain lying. It's so sad too see people take the pain they experienced and attempt to drag others down instead of heal. I truly hope you do the latter.

Dude this really sticks out to me because I tried leaving the cult recently and the bishop simply *wouldn't let me.* I'm apostate, transgender, and have same sex relations. All things that should qualify me for excommunication. But no. *My bishop decided that he knew me better than I know myself. And when he and my friend (we tried together) told him we were those three things he acted like and pretended we werent so until we further said that we are.
One big thing we kept saying is "Why, at the lwly age of eight can we choose to be baptized but at the age of sixteen be unallowed to leave?"
That's why this resonates w/ me.

I used that same point when my very religious family was bitchin about kids choosing their genders and how it’s being pushed by the parents because kids don’t have the world knowledge to know better….
    My very short reply was
“You mean like how y’all baptized me as a child when I had no clue it was a choice?”
Then as the silent glares intensified as the seconds went by…
I added on “I mean they’re both religions…both are cult like mentality….and if you disagree you’re a horrible person and shunning happens, therefore it’s more about control than about making lives/society better…”.
For some reason they changed the subject….

You're a brave girl and a smart girl for leaving the Mormon church. Follow God's instruction book which is the Bible, and follow Jesus Christ who is your savior. God bless you
