Classification is somewhat subjective. I’ve seen someone start out as a C3 then get moved to a C1, all while they got faster and faster. That’s seems contrary to the way it should be because C1’s are the most impaired classification for the upright bike riders.
In addition, getting classified can be rather difficult because you can’t simply go to your neighborhood medical center and sign up for classification. Classifiers are specialized and they are somewhat spread out across the country. You have to make an effort to get to be officially classified. That’s a huge barrier for a cyclist who’s eager to be classified so they can start racing in Paracycling events.
