It also works to make all traffic exit on the right, which is how real interchanges are designed. Simply make sure that the rightmost lane is exit only (by removing a lane from the highway at that point.)
Glitcher2000 i'd rate traffic flow in London a solid 22% lmao, Paris should be around 50% to 60% thanks to the Périphérique (huge 6 lane road diverging most of the through traffic) and the many 4 lanes Boulevards and Avenues piercing the city, plus there's a HUGE use of public transport with more than 7 Million people using Trams, Trains, and the Metro
shitposting is my city Yup, Paris has 16 metro lines transporting 5.5M passengers daily and 11 Trams lines with 1M daily passengers. Add to this already big number the RER transit system (5 lines) wich carries 3 million people everyday, with lines A ans B being the most crowded lines in the world except from Japan (1 200 000 and 800 000 daily ridership). Finally, a whole network of trains called Transilien carries more than 3.5 million passengers with it's 15 lines expanding more than 150 kilometres away from the city center. In total, and accounting for the people who take more than one line for their trip, you get around 7 Million passengers everyday. Now thats excluding the buses 😉
Yea a lot of cars are trying to make a left while others are going strait, he probably needs to elevate one road or make a new exit from the two lane road.
@@AZCaveMan480 It's not a stop sign issue, they can only use one road to turn and they need to wait the transit to flow to be able to continue. I noticed the same problem the video is talking about happens just after that turn lol
Great. BUT, honestly (and I'm not saying this guy is an exponent) I get a little sick of all the besserwissers that litter the forums just waiting to condecendingly pounce on someone who asks for traffic help. There are no drivers who behave like this. If there is space to advance, they will advance. Traffic flow depends on it. To imply that the fault lies solely with the player and that the AI is fine, is garbage.
0:45 he even says the AI is stupid... I think it was just a bit of sarcasm when he said it was not the AIs fault. His point is that there are ways of dealing with the AI instead of just getting mad at it
QualeQualeson you're leaving this absurd comment about people on forums when this is a video showing you how to solve the problem. "I really hate how there are no cops in this city, Mr. officer." You don't get that? Crying about people not giving solutions on a video of someone giving a solution....
AZCaveMan Are you sure the one "crying" here isn't you? Lol. Did the mean duck imply a weakness in your entertainment of choice? Oh no my volatile Asian friend, the absurdity here does not lie in my comment, but in the phenomenon of fanboyism, tribalism and cognitive bias. Before you know it, a weak design is not only manageable, but even an expression of a superior understanding.
I use a intersection manager mod for this. If you stop the left most lane from being a straight and left turn lane, the game figures out the rest by itself and cars will stick to the right hand lane more.
That was really good. Loved the explanations and the manner in which you delivered them. The only thing that left a question in my mind; was the traffic jam at the end. Other than that ... 10/10
see that's the problem though. Roads in real life all have exits on one side. Very rarely will they ever have it on the other side. So my idea is if the car's exit is the next one, it should use the closest lane, if the car's exit is the second exit away then it should be in the second lane away until it passes the first exit then it can move over one lane, and so on.
Everyone who wants to get better at traffic management needs to watch and understand this video. After 2000 hours of C:S, this is the single most important lesson. More lanes != better traffic. You need better lane usage to improve traffic, and to do this, each lanes have to go to different destinations.
One problem the game does not deal with at all, as far as I can tell, is congestion rerouting. It only takes into account the theoretical, best case travel time of roads. So if you take a 2 lane road and split it into two 2 lane roads, that then reconnect into a 2 lane road.. they will almost all use the shorter path. Even if the short path is congested, and the other is free flowing... they will not use it. Easy example is I tried to do ramp metering. Split the 2 lane highway into 4 metered ramps. Only the short ramps are used and the others are unused, even though you could cut the queue to use the others.
Sigh. I have a 2-lane 1-way road where both lanes turn left onto a main road. All the cars choose the left lane of that road, and then once they're on the main they redistribute themselves evenly. The main is working. But that 2-laner is running at half capacity because they all insist on only using 1 of the identical lanes. They'll use the left lane onto the main, and then perform 2 lane changes to get far right. In fact the biggest soonest turn off the main road is to the right, not the left! But they wouldn't dare use the right lane from the beginning. No, that'd make their trip 0.5m longer; so waiting in line forever and a triple last-minute lane change it is!
Video: 4:00 => 4 minutes of repeating how did that happen? Why they all go left, why they go left. I know you want to extend the video but please dont repeat yourself too many times
i just use traffic manager, manually force cars to be unable to change more than 1 lane at a time. and then change the lane speed for lanes that dont turn off to be faster, making the traffic want to use those lanes where possible, while having to make a choice of what lane to drive in much much earlier for the exit they want.
Another example of why a traffic management mod is essential for a more realistic AI attempt, and helping lay out more realistic lane choices or compulsions for roundabouts and complicated junctions/stretches... Interesting ideas for vanilla workarounds, though. Thanks.
That is again another fail of this game. Without lights works often better then with. IRL with no lights, a busy crossing would be a mess without lights!
Good information, but your voice is way too soft vs the music. I had to turn speakers way up to hear you, but then your music is blaring. please record your voice at a higher volume.
I'm really bad at logistics and planning out pathing, so I do use mods to make them use other lanes. I understand the logic behind the whole "using one lane" thing, and the way you explain it in the video makes perfect sense. That being said, no driver behaves the way cims do and "just make a convoluted path that takes advantage of how the game calculates where cars go" attitude lots of players have is complete horseshit. The game's not fun when your drivers line up single-file because car A wants to turn left at the first intersection and car B wants to turn left at the second intersection, and the "git gud" response more experienced players gleefully hand out makes me want to kick their teeth in.
The main problem with this is that in reality nobody builds a massive 6 lane highway then just ends it in 3 two lane streets splitting off in all directions. Just get traffic++ president edition and set the advanced ai to 100%, they actually fill the lanes like they should and you can tell the traffic performance just works sooooo much better with real world interchanges, which tend to actually work pretty good when the ai behaves like humans.
The problem might also have been solved by using an actual exit ramp and not simply forcing all the traffic to come to a dead stop at an intersection a mere block from the highway. Or by adding multiple exits, turning off the redlights at the intersections, and not requiring exiting traffic to stop.. I wonder why they even bother with 6-lane roads when it's almost impossible to get cars to use all the lanes. Yes, if you split the road at some point the AI will use all the lanes. But that's not always feasible and it isn't the reason for using wide roads in the first place. It wouldn't take much effort to tweak the AI so that it used any available lane to avoid issues until within a certain radius of its planned turn. Much like I don't instantly jump to whatever lane on the interstate just because I know I'll need it in an hour.
Im on console but I never have a 4 way intersection that doesnt use 6 Way Large....And all roads connects at a T with 2 way roads and never mediums....
Let me explain what I think is the problem. Yes, I'm agree with the fact that the IA does not match with the reallity. Real drivers would definitively take the advantage and try to go as farther as they can before turning left. But, is that what they really should do? If all the cars want turn left, the jam would be worst. The whole road would be blocked while the cars wait for their turn (and that's what happen in the real life). I think that a better solution would be, due to the fact that almost ALL the cars want turn left, is upgrade that street to a main avenue. Also, you can make an intersection of 6 lanes roads and let cars still on their own lane while turning left. I don't know if that is correct, but I would definitively try it before doing those awful conections.
As well as it works and as much as I appreciate a solution to dumb AI, I’m rather against over-engineering solutions to traffic Realistic cities like I try to build usually don’t have left side exits, but I do try to incorporate them as much as I reasonably can because it does work If speed limit control on Traffic President could be implemented lane by lane, it might help (if the AI chooses paths based on speed and distance rather than just distance)
willsham45 It is not so unusual for large roads like this in and around cities to have junctions on either side. It's not strictly a motorway/freeway in this example, so the medium speed traffic can 'safely' use multiple lanes. Even motorways can have weird or high volume crossing traffic or occasional 'wrong side' slip roads. Real roads inevitably attract some spaghetti layout to cater to unplanned demands.
In a real road, it wouldn't be strange for the two left lanes to be exits, the middle two your express/passing lanes, and the right two separated by concrete going off somewhere else. You could even model it in game using two roads. Complicated, high-traffic freeway intersections often split things up weirdly like this.
Truthfully, no city in Cities: Skylines needs a 6 lane one way road. The most cims the game can create is just over 1 million, and unless your city is much larger than that you don't need 6 lanes of one-way traffic to deal with it. The game also offers a plethora of public transport options and you simply must use them or you run into other game limits on your way to 1 million. Most of your traffic problems are caused by using inappropriate roads, which causes the game to put in stop lights and stop signs that you then have to remove or adjust manually. Use no more lanes than you need. It won't put in stop lights if you use only two lane two way roads. Put in a 4 or 6 lane boulevard just because you like the look or you anticipate more traffic and you have to deal with stop lights.
Great video, thanks. I still think the AI is wrong because in the real world people would use all lanes until they got closer to the turning point. In the real world drivers can't see miles ahead like the AI can, and can only make decisions with the information they have.
A real driver would drive in a different lane until the exit BEFORE theirs, and THEN move over. Can you imagine getting on a highway where everyone drives in the right lane because they know that they will eventually have to exit, even if it's over 10 miles away? By the logic of this game, nobody should ever drive in the middle lane because all exits have to be in the outer lanes.
I get overwhelmed trying to fix traffic in this game. They're all complete idiots. I have a spot in my city where a HIGHWAY leads exactly where they wanted to to stop free. But do they take it? No they'd rather take the turn prior into a spot of the city you have to stop 17x in before going there. If they make a sequel, hope to god they fix the traffic. My god Traffic wasn't this annoying in Sim City 3 even!
what i seen is a over abuse of multiple lanes. I do not see any reason yet for a sixlane road, where three lanes are sufficent, and, cheaper. If all want to go left, well 90% plus, i should make a sliplane on the right, over or underground to connect it to the desired highway. Problem solved in a much more efficentient way. My cities hardly uses much multilanes roads, four lanes tops. The trick to do that is too spread out zones more in tinier pieces instead of massive zones which attract passive transport with all their issues.
So, you have demonstrated the silly AI of this game. IRL: when for example two lanes are dedicated to go left futher down the road, we use both lanes! Same goes for multiple lanes going straight or right. In this game, you have to do unnatural things to get people using more lanes and even then, two lanes right turn, means most of not all use only one of those two. The traffic aI sucks in this game, lets face it. 4.34 shows exatly why your "mastrerly exit" fails again, just as i said; 90% still only uses one of those two lanes...hahaha.
I have built cities with 100k and traffic flow over 80% AND STILL!!!!! The just fucking pile up in one lane!!! I try moving exits to the other side and shit but even tat doesnt help. Someone needs to make a mod that just fixes the merdging or something but I am sure that is wayyy harder than it sounds.... This game is almost perfect but this merging bullshit is so bad...
tl;dr: Use both sides of the highway as exits and end 6-lane highways in three 2-lane one-way roads.
that is good suggestion.
No doubt! He spends 4 minutes of a 5 minute how to video showing the viewer how NOT to do it!
@@twicebaked7420 that is the best way to do it so we have a visual reference on what he is explaining. Shows thought in his process :~)
It also works to make all traffic exit on the right, which is how real interchanges are designed. Simply make sure that the rightmost lane is exit only (by removing a lane from the highway at that point.)
This is very useful for people without mods. Such as console players. And also good to understand the game better for better road design.

Someone needs to make a mod that just fixes the merdging or something but I am sure that is wayyy harder than it sounds.... This game is almost perfect but this merging bullshit is so bad...
Helpful for me !! reply plz
