The Roman estate near Seeb in the municipality of Winkel, is one of the few preserved Roman ruins in Canton Zurich.
The first building complex, still made of wood, was probably built around 30 AD. The first stone buildings were built around 50 AD. The complex was rebuilt and extended several times and was probably abandoned around 350 AD.
The manor house, the representative part of the estate with bathrooms, is located on the top of the Römerwäldli. This was decorated with magnificent mosaics and murals. The floors are mainly made of black and white stones, with more elaborate decorations, red, green and yellow were also used. Only fragments of the paintings are preserved. They were representations of gods and members of the imperial family. Shards of glass found suggest that the windows of the bath were tinted yellow and violet.
In front of the manor house there is also a monumental fountain house.
The residential and commercial buildings for the agricultural workers can be found a little further to the northwest. The area surrounded by several walls has an area of at least 88'000 m2 . It is most likely that the Roman army also worked here. Found roof tiles with stamps of the 21st and 11th legion, which were stationed in the city of Vindonissa, indicate this.
During the excavations between 1963 and 1970, numerous agricultural tools were found. Among them sickles, scythes, scales and horse bridles, but also many keys and lock plates, some of which were artistically decorated. There were no great treasures, the most unusual finds were individual pieces of jewellery, votive violets and a statuette of Hercules.
Today the complex is an open-air museum and openly accessible.
