I'm convinced that you can play slap on just about any instrument and make it sound amazing. We need to hear slap banjo or slap dulcimer next.
Slap trumpet could be interesting...
Second for slap banjo
Slap a theremin.
@@CharlesBerthoudsounds like you already had that in mind 🤔
@@CharlesBerthoud As a former trumpet player.... there certainly were times we wanted to slap the trombones in concert band... ;-)
Charles isn't just a bassist, he's a pure musician.
Yes and it blows my mind as an absolute polar opposite of a musician.
He is a Master of Music. Not to mention, he seems like a nice guy, too.
As we should all strive for
Is it me or does this seem like an adolescent cub approaching full maturity
Wow, you’re right Charles.
Slap 6-string-short-scale-piccolo-bass does sound weirdly FUNKY! And jazzy…!
Wait a damn minute 🤣
I was looking for this comment! 🤣
lol
Should have been the title 😂
0:45 this part is so beautiful, i love those eighth notes into that chord, he builds up tension and resolves it so nicely
Ditto. That really caught my ear, had to go back and check it out a second time.
Best part indeed
Not even full-time guitarists have the guts to post videos with this clean of a tone, well done sir!
It's likely cleaned up a bit in post, but it's still a great tone and he's remarkably talented.
Lots of shredders are doing that these days. Clean guitar tone is the new "thing" in prog/instrumetal. Ibanez even put out a Tim Henson signature nylon string acoustic-electric guitar. Where have you been? :)
@Inconclusive What makes you say that it's cleaned up?
Brandon Acker would like a word with you.
@@cedarhsu gotcha, thx.
Apart from technical abilities, what makes Charles more alluring is his melodic approach. What a musician!
The exact reason why i also love ichika compared to a lot of other modern guitarists. Tim henson and generally polyphia have ridiculous technique, but their songs are not easy to listen to because of their techniques. Ichikas music is very soothing, complicated, yet very easy to follow
Is it me or does this seem like an adolescent cub approaching full maturity
Bass and guitar absolutely have their place in the slap world. Both have unique approaches to achieve the same results. Always a fantastic watch!
Polyphia - great example of that.
Always enjoy the positivity you spread around the many music channels on RUclips, hope you're having a wonderful day yourself!
Look at Regi Wooten's slap battles vs Victor. Guitar vs Bass, weird stuff but fun.
@@Kily9 and John 5
@@Kily9 Polyphia - the most recent example of that. Reggie Wooten has been playing slap guitar for literally decades.
One thing I've noticed is that, no matter how busy and technical your playing gets, it's always cleanly-executed and highly, HIGHLY melodic. I know you're a bassist almost full-time, but I for one would LOVE to see you have a slap guitar/slap bass/piano trio video. That'd be...amazing.
Just a normal piano? May as well go for a slap piano...
Need a full version of this Song ! This is just phantastic
If you made me listen to this for the first time with my eyes closed, I could've sworn it was Ichika. A bassist playing the guitar on this level this nonchalantly is mind-blowing.
Exactly, very Ichika like!! Beautiful stuff
I thought the same
There's something with playing piano as the first instrument. Both ichika and charles did that. And both actually started out on bass. Ichika started playing guitar when he was 15 i think while charles stayed with bass
you’re right it is very ichika-esque
I’ll never understand how he can come up and play these pieces but I’ll always be here to listen to em
My guess is weed. Lots of weed.
@@dickfitzwell523 I'd say practise. But fair enough
@@dickfitzwell523 Ima have to hop on this 😭 I feelin so uncreative lately
Practice learning plenty of songs from different genres and also keep an eye on how certain musicians play their instruments, you might find a technique that works right for you.
Ide say he's listen to a life time of different music with his ears and practice. Some people listen to music differently than other people, and his brain has absorbed a little bit of everything I imagine.
To pluck on a bass with as much umph as you do and then go pluck so delicately on a guitar is the real kicker here. The control the fella has.
Damn, that is a funky ass groove! 🤟🔥
Sounds like something Ichika Nito would write if he was asked to play some funk
Charles can pick up any instrument and play it with mastery😂😭❤️
Not a flute... no idea how people play those things 🤣
@@CharlesBerthoud let us see that
And flamboyantly
I have no idea how to play the flute either. I can’t even make a sound 😂
@@CharlesBerthoud yeah how can you slap a flute? If you can't slap it, its useless...
No one has put that much work on its instrument on the whole planet. Blissful genius.
Now we just need a bass line to make this complete
and some drums
Plus more bass
He's a pretty good guitarist, but I wonder if this guy can play bass.
That last chord was awesome.
God this is so sick, I’d love to hear something like this in a full band setting
Polyphia
@@TsunamiHige this is like polyphia but with better taste
Please do a full length of this. It's very pleasant.
It's scary how clean this is.
Strong Intervals - Touch and Go album vibes in this one!
If it has strings, I'm thinking this dude has a fair chance of being able to play it, and play it well. He is a picture of what a musical gift and a ton of practice can do.
lovely! the part starting round 0:32 reminded me of ichika nito
Literally one of the best musicians alive today on the planet today.
I'm glad 6 string piccolo basses are becoming one of your interests!
An album made by you where everything is written, played, and produced by you, I’d buy it.
Yet more proof that bassists make better guitarists, than guitarists make bassists
Love you , Charles. Everything you do is magical. 😄
i genuinely want this as a full song
That 6-string short-scaled piccolo bass sounds nice!
Wow, this man is right up there with the best of them! He's one of the few, solo artists I could actually listen to.
should check out Japanese guitarist Miyavi. He is known for his guitar slapping
That is absolutely amazing, one man band with a single instrument.
This sounds like the outro to a feel good slice of life anime and I'm here for it.
Charles, you are a once in a generation instrumentalist and we all feel lucky to be alive at the same time as you
what part of your body should i massage?
That was really beautiful. Thanks for sharing!
You've been at it again, I see. Bravo, Charles! Very nice indeed.
I thought this would be a dumb sketch about bassists snapping guitar strings. Instead I got to hear a beautifully classy bit of improv 👌
This is just pure insanity. You're legit the best bass player I know
The clarity is absolutely mind-blowing. The melodies are so fantastic and rich, technical ability out of this world. I could listen to this all day long and never get bored one second. It's almost a shame that you're not a guitarist cause holy do I wanna hear more of this!
That was amazing Charles! Very funky, musical, technical, all at once. Please keep slapping the guitar!
Bass skills translate very well to guitar, but weirdly not the other way around.
I know I’ll never be as good as you, but you definitely make me inspired to get better. I’ve improved so much on guitar in just the past few months, but I’ve got a long way to go to be able to compose anything like this. You’re my favorite RUclips Virtuoso. Keep up the good work!
Not sure how so much creativity & musicianship can be packed into a one-minute arrangement... but there it is!
You better post a video with a funkalicious bass track playing over this
That double-stop tapping is 🤌🏼 mwah!
You're an absolute machine mate! It would be amazing to see what you could do with one of those hybrid guitars, the ones with like 3 bass strings and 5 guitar strings and the separate bass/guitar pickups
Funky and very smooth 💫
Amazing as usual Charles, you just keep setting your bar higher!
The ring on his hand is a remote control, he is a robot
Not only the best bass player on the planet, but easily one of the best guitarists too !
Those hands are faster than summer break 🤯
I would do anything to be able to play like that um, you know, except practice 6 to 8 hours a day for years on end. Thank you for doing that for us.
Even on a guitar you're still trapped in your little box.
Waiting for "When a bassist slaps a piano"
There should be a challenge amongst youtuber musicians to swap instruments. Bassists play the guitar and guitarists play the bass.
Особенно поражает аккуратность исполнения! Прям огонь!
This dude from another planet..Charles has an unreachable thirst ..so he gotta do it while he has the time ..because everything much change
You have way too few subscribers. ☹️ You're a poly-instrumentalist, dammit, with a fertile musical mind! So many people are missing out on what you offer.
@markusarubuche😂😂😂 3 subs
Too few? He's basically a new channel still. He's had a ton of growth and he's at the point where he has so many subs that it's nearly impossible for him not to branch out away from RUclips in some form or another. That's the way it should be. It's easy to forget how big those numbers are when you see bigger numbers all the time but 1.5 million is a lot. Even 100,000.. concert tickets, merch, physical and digital album sales. That could be millions and millions of dollars 👍 I hope he's so successful he never has to show his face on RUclips again. He's that good
love it charles, so funky
Ok man! That's enough with these guitars!... You should finaly play slap on a double bass!!!! That would be a real thing!!)
1:01 Frank Zappa said that maj7 is the sound of 2 people falling in love. I agree.
It sickens me that people like 4 chord Sheeran is a multimillionaire making garbage music every month, yet true talents like Charles are not even heard of outside of YT.
Real bruh, but Ed Sheeran aint bad. I'd say 90% of the new pop songs late 2022 till now
That's the way to livin up any hotel room
This soulds almosl like Ichika Nito. Awesome playing!
I really need this complete song, with about 3 minutes, so I can listen to it thousands and thousands of times
The truly gifted make it look effortless...He funk out and slap on a banjo...or even a ukulele
Nice!! Had my toes tapping from note one.
I feel like you've watched Ichika Nito before this and thought 'I can do this' and my god you are amazing.
You're obviously a marvelous guitarist. Bravi!
Pure pleasure 🙏 thank you ❤️🔥
So beautiful!!! Thank you!
This bassist is better than 90% of guitarists
We need a full album!
This sounds wonderful, Tomo Fujita would be proud of you, Charles. 😁
The silence you hear after is the sound of guitarists closing their cases and scurrying away in shame.
Loving the sound!
I started playing guitar again after a 27 year hiatus following the theft of all my equipment which was irreplaceable at the time, and I just became an appreciative but heartbroken listener. But while scrolling through RUclips videos one evening about 5 months ago I came across a man named Charles Berthoud playing 4 Green Neon Strings. I was absolutely blown away and spent the whole day in complete awe listening to one of his videos after another.
A few days later on my next day off from work I went to guitar center and bought two guitars. I now have 6 and a Marshall JVM 205H head and 4X12 cab and am practicing every waking hour that Im not at work. Thanks Charles! You woke up the music in my soul again!
Listen, I’m a guitar player but I prefer bass more in most situations, but this is unironicly the best vid you have ever made
Never knew a schecter can sound so good as a jazz guitar.
I love this melody 🥰
That was awesome... Thanks for sharing this
When someone says bassists are just failed guitarists, show them this video to prove them wrong
Great timing!! Amazing
Would be interesting to see how you handle a 3 string cigar box guitar.
Next video: I SLAPPED a TRUMPET, and it sounds AMAZING
I could listen to a whole album of that right there. Who knew slap guitar sounded soooo good
You know Charles is awesome when he can make a guitar sound good
Charles your by far my all time favorite musician and inspiration. Thank you brother!
I love the mix of funky bass and sharp sounding guitar in this song. love it!
Hold my beer... so I can grab another one and watch this sick slap video again!
This guy is a better guitarist than most guitarists on youtube.
Charles is the best guitar player i've never seen
Technique and display of talent aside , it's just great on the ears , very nice 😎
Ichika Nito and Charles need to collab!
Beautiful playing, Charles!
Looking forward to the full Slapharmonic Orchestra video.
Woaaah, your guitar playing is amazing bro!
This is amazing guitar playing and a beautiful heartfelt song. Would kill to buy this
Charles Berthoud: The Slap Trumpet is VERY jazzy.
i will wait for this
