  • Italian cultural institutions can take the lead in open access to Italy's cultural heritage. This is demonstrated by the collaboration between Wikimedia Italia, the Museo Egizio and Creative Commons Italia, which is enabling the publication on Wikipedia and its sister projects of images of more than 2,300 items preserved by the museum in Turin.
The Egyptian Museum has long been at the vanguard in Italy on the issue of Open Access, and as part of a collaboration between the three organizations formalized in May 2022, Wikimedia Italia is uploading images from the museum's photographic archive to Wikimedia Commons, the world's largest database that already hosts more than 90 million freely usable images, and Wikidata, the collaborative database that facilitates online content search.
Through this collaboration, images from the Museo Egizio's photographic archive will be made available online along with structured data about the objects, which deal with the chronology, the provenance and the materials of the artifacts. In doing so, the photos will be able to easily enrich Wikipedia articles in the various language editions and will simultaneously enable easier Internet searches for images, data, and information on the collections.
