I like it! Having this explanation on hand will help me alot. Have to take off the head to get to my O Rings, so I figured I'd have to do all of this stuff. (2000 Celica GT, 263,000km, blows black/blue smoke)
So apparently my celica has just a blown head gasket but like it sounds really bad it’s it knocking but it won’t idle and it’s running really rough so you think it’s something worse or the head gasket is just f’d up
So how did you get that little bolt off that holds the timing chain guide to the head? It's a right bastard to get to I'm dreading putting it back in the same way it was took out
That's a mission!! My celica is burning oil like mad now and I'm sure my headgasket is leaking a bit... the repairs would cost more then what I paid for the car it has 180k miles I'm hoping to make it last this winter and get another maybe an 04 without the oil burn issue they are good cars i put 80k miles on it I think I got my money's worth of 2200
I have a Toyota celica 2000 gts and it has like 275k miles but it burns oil like crazy and you always gotta do your oil changes on time or you can have some really bad troubles later
Good video lots of help,!! What would have helped a little more if you would have pointed to the bolts instead of just pointing your camera.... Otherwise great job
James Jacobs it was VERY difficult. Definitely tie a piece of fishing line near the head of the bolt then use needle nose pliers to get it started in the hole. Once its started use your fingers to get it a bit more in. Once its near half way, cut the string where you tied the knot so it all comes off the bolt then use a box end 10mm to squeeze in there and finish getting the bolt in with small turns
yeah that was a definite with a the string. i even tied the wrench to my other wrist in case i dropped it. one last question if u will, the timing tensioner is pushed all the way out, i see that little latch, do i need to reset the tension to get the cam gears back in place?
I need to replace my valves in the head so I need to remove the head but I am afraid to mess up with the timing belt. Once the head is removed, what do you do to make sure the correct timing will be set once you put back the head again?
Just tie the chain up with tension..old school trick is tying the mid-point ofthe chain between the cams to the bonnet/hood, you could also use a paint marker on the cogs and chain links (12 o'clock pos)....its important you dont let the chain slack or fall as you would risk moving it a teeth or 2 right at the bottom...and if that happens you'll need to take out the entire engine and time the entire thing again!
So I hope you reply to this as soon as you can but I'm having a lot of trouble finding the size socket I need to loosen the 12point head bolts. What size did you use?
It was a custom bit that took me awhile to find. I think I got it in a set from AutoZone. That's all the info I can remember. It's been years. I haven't owned the car since 2016
Hello , very interesting movie here. Please tell me, did you really take of the head, without taking away the chain cover? As i understand, you just removed the bolts from the cover, which are bolted to the head, so the head becomes free and you can remove it, without removing the whole cover. Thanks and let me know.
Sorry for the late response. Yes if you remove all the bolts I specified in the video and keep the chain tight while removing the head, you dont need to take the side chain cover off. It isnt the safest but it worked for me twice.
+Haaris Edhi it was VERY hard. I believe a box at the perfect angle broke it then I used the tips of my fingers to loosen it. I tied a string on the bolt when it was half out then used fingers to get it the rest of the way then pulled it out with the string
I like it!

I did this job on an '03 GT. The 1ZZ-FE is a very easy engine to work on. Replacing the head was time consuming, but not difficult at all
This helped me so much, thanks a lot and God bless your family !!
great video.. Do u have a video to show how do put everythign back together ?
That was very informative. Thanks for the info.
So apparently my celica has just a blown head gasket but like it sounds really bad it’s it knocking but it won’t idle and it’s running really rough so you think it’s something worse or the head gasket is just f’d up
Any tips on how to get the timing correct when putting it back together?
The timing is the hard part . How you set it back ?
So how did you get that little bolt off that holds the timing chain guide to the head? It's a right bastard to get to I'm dreading putting it back in the same way it was took out
It was a bitch. Tie fishing line to the bolt and get it started with needle nose plyers

Do you know if this works for the 2zz? They're pretty similar but I heard you gotta take the whole timing cover off for it.
To where isI the second bolt located around the timing chain area before taking the head off thanks

johnny cooper thank you!
are there any tricks or tips u used to get the bolt for the chain guide back into the head?

The string is in case you drop the bolt (you will). It takes forever but you will get it eventually
my hero. I've been fighting that one bolt for 2 days.

one last question if u will,
the timing tensioner is pushed all the way out, i see that little latch, do i need to reset the tension to get the cam gears back in place?
James Jacobs good luck! Keep working it and you will get it soon.

confused me for a while, never heard someone call the camshaft the rocker.
why do you need to take off the serpentine belt? it doesn't look like it has to come off
Head bolts are torque to yield so don't re-use them
U didnt line up the timing marks on the timing chain.
