THANK you so much!! Your vid helped me fix an 03 Vibe GT with the 2zz. Bought it on a complete gamble with Lift in-op, after watching your vid, and decided to chance it. 2.5hr job later VVTLi is back in action !! screen and solenoid body were filthy. Thank you so much for making and sharing this video!
Always dropped oil every 2500 to 3000 miles as you say. Like you basic maintenance is prerequisite to keeping these cars at top performance. Have changed both screens as there are two, one for the VVTi and the other as you state for the "Lift". Carb clean the intake always good. MAF sensor cleaning also good. Lift bolts change to updated ones. If unsure you can find something on RUclips - no doubt about that. One fault I find with the 2ZZ is the timing cover gaskets can break down over time. Most think any oil leak is the rocker cover or chain tensioner or power steering pump, but for some reason Toyota 2ZZ can have timing gasket issues after high miles. Can be a pain to change but possible without removing the engine fully. Brilliant video. Mitch knows his 2ZZ's so keep tuning in.
Edit: The VVTi filter (Not the Lift one) is located just underneath the alternator. But for just Lift mode, just change and clean the VVTLi filter as Mitch mentions.
I miss my '03 so bad. But alas, previous owners had thrashed and neglected it so bad that it really would've taken a complete rebuild to make it right again. I'm still looking for another, though...
Love those cars…. I remember when we got one on trade and I took it out to get parts… such a blast. Always looked into getting one but I love my Evo and Lancer gts.
Man I'm jealous. I have a Celica which does the trick. Super fun. but my mate has an evo 9 and I've had the privilege to drive it a couple times. My god is that thing quick. Such a dream to drive compared to my Celica too. Don't get me wrong, I love how violent the Celica is but the Evo just feels like it wants to drive fast. Feels super comfortable even beyond 200km/h.
Looking at getting a Celica. Which years are the best? I'm hear ing 00 has the most issue with the VVTL bolts breaking. And apparently major oil leak issues with 00, 01, 02. It seems like a really reliable and fun car though, and I love the way they look.
I bought a 2001 gts manual with 218k 2 weeks back.. I seriously doubt they changed the lift bolts. Getting a rebuilt trans, sync gears and clutch. Still haven't done an oil change yet. I hope the lift bolts were changed?..... lol awesome video
Fantastic video! Thanks for making it. My lift is gone and I assumed it was the lift bolts but I will try this for sure first. Have you a video changing the lift bolts if this doesn't work? My 2ZZ is pouring oil out from what looks like the timing chain tensioner gasket. Could be the rocker cover gasket either. Was gonna attempt the rocker cover gasket when I try the lift bolts but not sure I'd be comfortable doing it. I don't use the lift that much but I miss it now it's gone!
2zzlow has a video on it, and if its leaking quite alot of oil it would most likely be the timing cover gasket. its a very common issue because of the age and mileage of them now. and the timing cover needs to be removed to fix the lift bolts, its much easier to do it with the engine out of the car
Nice Vids Mitch! I am about to do this procedure on my 01 GTS and I have a few questions. 1. Does the engine need to be drained of oil to do this? 2. My lift is fine on gears 3rd and on. The issue is 1st and 2nd gear. They both struggle to achieve lift but they do get it somtimes. Which leaves me to believe this is the fix and not the flange bolts (lift bolts). But I do have those too incase of future supply shortage. 3. Did yours have issue on all gears?
oil doesnt need to be drained, but have a rag ready. if your lift is not working in 1st and 2nd i doubt its working from 3rd, lift doesnt come on as hard in those gears so its less obvious if theres a problem. probably easiest to check your lift bolts at the same time as trying this fix as if they are broken you need to take the ocv off anyway
@@arcanevoid9199 Hey thanks for replying. If it is the bolts, wouldn't the symptom be completely no lift? In other word, Like I mentioned I do get lift on 1 and 2 just with hesitation. For example, I would launch on 1st and feel a sorto of stutter (Similar to redlining), but keeping foot pressed on gas it eventually goes to lift, just not as quick as it normally would. 2nd gear same. As long as I keep foot on gas, it will reach 5-6k rmp, needle does a dance and then go to lift.
@@retzu7612 well with my car only one of the lift bolts was broken so there was a crossover but it didn’t really go any faster. stuttering is different, might be another issue. just to confirm that you are getting a burst of power at 6k rpm?
@@arcanevoid9199 Yikes! Did you go through the broken bolt process that involved taking cams out and all? 6k around that vicinity if I recall. Amazing video, my celica isnt hitting lift, i change the lift bolts, by the way it was a swamp engine, my celica use to be a gt, but i bought the 2zz engine i believe its a 2001, i just got a quick question, i just changed the oil on my car, will it be ok to clean the little filter with out changing the oil??
I have a question for you... After one year did you have any problem with the valve? I'm. Asking you cos I need to realise the problem with the valve solved only for the cleaning fitter. 🤔.. P. s keep going the good job 👌
Hey John. How easily did those lift bolts come loose for you? And did you untighten manually with hand tools? Just curious if Im gambling swithcing them out if its not called for just so I can add new bolts on them. Sometimes doing the precautionary changes can lead to worse cirumstances such as untightening them only to snap them unintetionally doing the process. I just dont want to be that guy who end up leavin a piece of the bolt in thread hole and now has to take it all aprt to get to it. Please advise.
@@retzu7612 was really easy 1st time I’ve ever done anything like that. Just manually undid the lift bolts, used a small bar as to not use to much pressure and they came right out. Did the new ones up with a torque wrench (can’t remember the setting off top of my head)and job done. I have the face lift model celica so I believe they have different lift bolts. Also cleaned the filter in the solenoid which was super easy too. I did both this as precautionary but lift does feel a lot harder. The lift bolts were pretty worn. Did both jobs in under an hour. I’d recommend doing it, I’m a complete novice and I breezed through it
Thanks Mitch - pretty straight forward but detailed! Curious: have you ever fixed the secondary air injection on any celica you had? Is it worth it? I have the same code throwing every now and then

Mitch, is there another solenoid on the face of the engine by the alternator, I wonder if that should be clean out; if so how would you get to it?

You can put a resistors in wire to trick the ecu.
Hey bro, Is it necessary to drain the oil? Or can I just clean it?
Hard for you to get lift when the car is turbocharged. So you have to remap when the lift kicks in ? Is it still turbo or did you take it off ?
you should change your cooling thermostat. Your temperature drop while driving.
Can you make a Video showing us the Sound difference between the different exhaust
