I love these cars, I had the same model you were testing, the Gen 7 TSport. The error you made is that the TS does not have a VVTi as such, the VVTi is the engine in the 140bhp version. The TS has the VVTLi, the L means lift Intelligence, thats what you were experiencing at 6300 revs when the Lift cam kicks in and the engine has apparently a 20 bhp boost, below this point the engine is very similar to the 140 bhp version, which makes it ideal as a daily driver which you can gain a significant boost for the top 2000 revs up to the redline.
Have the GT TRD version (35mm lower standard). Old ECU revs to 8400 RPM before red line. Regular oil changes always ideal. Check lift bolts (cheap to replace). Through the country lanes not many higher performing cars can live with it. Screams after 6200 when lift comes in and it's a shove in the back as she takes off. This engine (2ZZGE) was developed by Yamaha and used by Lotus. It is reliable if you do basic services. Common faults if buying one: Check timing cover gasket as they tend to leak higher miles. Most believe it leaks from the tensioner o-ring but usually the timing cover gasket and can be a pain to fix as tight. Change spark plugs to IK20TT (Denso). Stick to KYB shocks unless getting good coil-overs. Clean throttle body and MAF (easy job). Check sills. Keep VVT filter and VVTLi filters clean (inspect/change/carb clean). Easy job with basic mechanical knowledge. Oil pump is prone to blow apart if downshifting into red line too aggressively so be wary! Change the oil sump to the 1ZZ engine (140 BHP). It is baffled and helps oil pick up/prevent starvation when high speed cornering/track runs. Direct bolt on. Weird Toyota never did this? You can upgrade them via se7en Motorsports. They are UK based and offer a Rotrex super charger kit that takes it (no internal mods to engine or gearbox hence safe) to 320 BHP. ECU is NOT programmable. You need a stand alone ECU to mess about with any tuning. Monkey Wrench Racing (MWR) in USA offers so many upgrades and original/aftermarket parts. Good SS Cat back exhaust helps as does high flow cat. Use shell nitro once in a while. Might need to re-mortgage house though at today's New World Order rip you off prices. If buying one, join Celica Club UK. Great place for info/help/sourcing parts original/aftermarket. Great review.
Thank you for your detailed ownership experience, advice and experience with the Celica. I'm sure it'll be very helpful to anyone thinking to buy one and I'm really glad you enjoyed the review!
@@CarNitty Good channel. Celica GT4 would be a great review if you get hold of one, as will a well sorted Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo. Had both. Great cars but can be expensive to maintain.
I'm always up for anything interesting or quirky on my channel. The JDM content is big here and it's down to what I'm offered and then I'm able to review these
1zz pan is not actually baffled, it only has the windage trays on the pan instead of the underside of the engine in the 2zz. it is not an upgrade and can cause issues, moroso pan is the only to get an actual baffled pan for it
I agree with everything this owner says - excellent comments and advice to potential owners. One thing I'd say though is if you're going to track the car you should absolutely get the Moroso baffled sump for the 2zz. Very expensive but you'll blow the engine due to oil starvation in a high speed corner if you don't, so it's absolutely worth it. What "baffles" me is why Toyota made a beautiful high revving Pavarotti engine and gave it an inadequate oil sump from the factory.
I absolutely love the Celica. As you were saying, for the price it's amazing. The driving experience is amazing. It handles amazing. The steering is pinpoint. Personally, I don't care about interior. Its a car to drive. I don't need all that poshy interior shit. It's the most fun car I have ever driven. The reliability is amazing as well. I love them so much it's why I have 2 of them. Love this car. Lastly, you look like you're having fun driving that car. Life is a journey...enjoy the ride
Very underrated car these. I had a few and was my first car vvtli. No type R Civic had a chance with me at the lights. Raced three in my time. The idea is to making sure it doesn't come out of the lift 6200rpm +
Definitely. I've noticed the Celica doesn't get as much love as it should which is a massive agent. Definitely a good alternative to a type R of this era
Yes, that's correct. I didn't go into detail in regards to the difference between VVT-i and VVTL-I. Both are the same but the latter is more aggressive and provides better response due to the "lift" as per the letter L in the term. It's similar to VTEC's single cam vs dual cam
I love my turbo Celica, I'll never sell it. If you've never driven a Celica with VVTL-i, go experience it and form your own opinion, don't let articles mislead you
I've been in a celica with vvtli and the lift kick and sound us intoxicating. I've rode in an s2000 too and the celica sounds better than the s2000 vtec. You can definitely tell it's made by Yamaha because it turns from 4 cylinder sound into Motorcycle sound when it hits lift!
Although I don’t really care about the engine as long as it pushes the car forward, this car is all about the look in the best way possible. It evokes strong feelings of passion in every inch of the body. Such a piece of modern art. Immaculate beauty. Gonna age like fine wine.
I'm a celica t-sport(192hp) owner and I fully agree with u.If you do some mods this car looks like a super expensive modern sport car. Also 2zz engine(vvtl-i) by Yamaha kicks harder than Hondas v-tec.
Incredible car, very underrated, the only thing that needs another oil pan because if it exceeds 1.1g of lateral pressure in track it runs out of oil and breaks. also needs an oil pump if it rotates above 8,800rpm, in normal conditions nothing happens with proper maintenance they are still circulating many 2zzge with over 300,000 miles without repairs as a very reliable engine with the only flaw in the tunning/turbo the pistons due to high compression, if they are changed in low compression you have a reliable 450hp, but the transmission cannot withstand more than 350-400Nm, but the solution is e153 gearbox, as a 100% factory motor it can easily and safely go to 360-380hp with compressor/rotrex, I have seen even with 200.000miles. Also the gl4 75w90 is great for trasmision and not gl5 because destroy the synchros. as a former owner of ep3 typer k20a2 I have to say that he has nothing to envy from that!
@CarNitty be well my friend, thank you too. the most important things for those who want to run on a track is the oil 0w40 mobil1 fs or 5w30 amsoil signature series is great choice the oil changes if use track days every 3-5 track days , gearbox fluids with redline mt90 gl4, lift bolts every 25-30.000 miles costs only2€ antifreeze every 4 -5 years of toyota pink not red and good fuel With all this maitance/improvements the 2zzge is bulletproof engine!
My man beating the hell out of that 2zz and keeps saying i need a Type R lol . its like smashing a girl and wanting to be with a different girl at the same time lol
Wicked to see a review. Few points! Have owned the most GT Celicas in the UK. What makes this car so special is the nimble handling -> That was the designers scope when producing this masterclass. At the time this on par with mclaren producing 100bhp per litre. No other 1.8 was producing these figures in 1999 (190 celica became the T Sport) That was groundbreaking at the time! That "analogue" experience you feel is to die for which is why the celica will always be remembered. By the way every owner should install a short shifter as its essential for the celica to throw quickly which suits the long clutch
Shh 🤫don't let the secret out 😁I drive a 2001 USDM Celica GTS. Love my car. It's not super fast and it's not especially practical as a daily, but it's so fun. For what it is, it's so good. It has character. It's exciting to drive. The look on your face when you hit lift says it all. The same 2zz-ge engine powers the Lotus Elise. No, it's not quite an Integra DC5, but it is a special car with a special engine.
I agree with everything you've said. People ready do not realise what amazing value for money a Celica can offer and the feeling it can give it's owner!
I had a Corolla T Sport with the same engine, it was a great little sporty car. I had the muffler removed so it was quite noisy too (perhaps a bit too noisy if we're being honest)
Good review man, in Canada we say se-leeka too. I will say the biggest downfall of these cars is their rear visibility and blindspots. 99.9% of people will think Im crazy or full of shit but, I traded a 01 phoenix yellow ITR for my then brand new 03 GTS. Granted, I couldnt appreciate the Type R then but when I was 19 I thought it felt cheap and tinny due to it being stripped down..it felt like a civic to my inexperienced youth. The Celica felt solid and more luxurious if you will. Kind of wish I had kept now as it's worth more now. Im on my 2nd Celica now, 02 Panasonic/TRD GTS. The 03 is around..needs restoring which I hope to begin this summer.
When you're smiling like that it tells you everything you need to know about the car I love my Celica I like the fact that it has no torque it makes you work for it very engaging
Sorry to be that guy but this isn't technically a Toyota equivalent of the DC5. Toyota made the Celica 190 as an answer to the DC2, being the same engine size etc. you can see that they did a great job! I believe the DC2 is still faster around a track though? Not that it matters, I'd choose a Celica over Integra purely just on the it being 3 times less the price. I think you can still make the Celica 190 compete against the DC5 and it beat it on the road. I have a friend who's got a Corolla T sport, pushing probably 220+bhp and it's a monster. Beating Focus STs and all sorts on the motorway.
@@CarNitty DC2 integra was made in 1996 and the 7th Gen celica was 1999 so the timeline kinda matches up. Saying that though, Toyota also made a 6th Celica called the SS3 (Japan only) which had a 200hp vvti 2.0l 3SGE which I guess was also an attempt to compete with the DC2 😅
Late comer to this video here, however re your comments on the clutch, back in the day I had this car and there was no such issue using the clutch. Didn’t have to fully press it down to change gear. Mine was similar to any prior manual car I had back then. I’d say if you had to press all the way down, then something was wrong, maybe needed adjusting. Just saying from my own experience with the car, albeit was some 15 years back or so.
Yeah they definitely don't get much love I personally prefer the older GT4 Celica but these are definitely great cheap buys alternative to an EP3 £ wise
I can’t agree with the bit about the seating position… I’m 6,4 and not even remotely small. I fit in this thing just fine. My partner is 5,6 and she can also drive it comfortably… perhaps you had the seat set wrong?
Driving a manual car and getting comfortable is a hard thing to gauge. You need to be able to reach the biting point without fearing stalling the car as well as having somewhere to rest your left leg in-between shifts and having enough legroom. I've only really felt comfortable in BMW manual cars if I'm honest!
Allow the yanks calling it a Silly ka. I miss my 190 and it was surprisingly practical. Fitted 2 mountain bikes with both wheels off and seats down and the boot was surprisingly roomy. Things I hated The Powerband/Gearing. The high lift transition point was pretty high. It meant that even with redlined shifts, you still had to change the power. I didn't want to invest the £1k to fit new cams to bring lift on 500rpm lower. Don't get me wrong, I grew up on IL4 sportsbikes, so I loved the engine's characteristics. But the gearing/revs are nowhere near as good as a K20 equipped honda. The water leaks. I used to have a nice puddle in my back seat bench from where water would pool in from my sunroof guttering. Could never really get to the bottom of that before I sold the car It eats radiators. Nearside/gutter would cause corrosion leading to the inevitable punched core and escalating temps Things I loved - neutral handling - the looks - very timeless and you can be anything from a boy race to a discerning old chap and still suit the car
@@CarNitty Ironically, it's the only I've had in my ownership that's ULEZ compliant! Go figure! These days, I've become a diesel dad, with the need to have acres of boot space for outdoor pursuits. As fun as a rear wheel drive car is, an S204 C250d remapped or an E70 X5 40 with 360bhp and 700Nm will never be as involving to drive as the Gen 7. Yeah, diesels have all the torque, but there's nothing more rewarding than working for your gears and apexing right. I lowered mine 30mm on eibachs, which made no end of difference to the weight transfer (and also ruined the fuck out of my splitter on the back roads and farm tracks where I lived). Hugely underrated car, with dwindling numbers. That being said the Celica Club was a very useful forum and community.
I'm glad you had your selfish period to open a small sports coupe before now settling for a wagon. Diesel's are great for many things and the torque is crazy but there's no reward of revving it out whatsoever and I'm sure that's very obvious compared the 2ZZ 9k RPM VVTLI
@@CarNitty I used to have a 94 Kawasaki ZXR250C with a straight through 4-1 exhaust. That had a soft redline at 18500RPM. I had quite a lot of fun screaming that through the Blackwall Tunnel or Strand Underpass when I was in my late teens. Me in multi storey car parks, such as Brent Cross would get people turning heads. Thing only went as fast as 105mph, mind, but like with many Jap N/A engines, it's that sense of connection and reward. That being said, I'd rather still have internal combustion and turbo whistle instead of the utter silence of an EV... knowing that Miss Daisy will still dick me off the lights til 30 in her ID3!!! (true story)
i have a 01 celica gt its auto got it for graduation gift back in 04 i would have loved a manual but hey it has plenty of get up an go when i need it peppy in an out of traffic an merging on to interstate i dont get out here an try to race i dont care who has the faster car im a working man i care about gas prices more than all out horse power
@@CarNitty I can describe the work it requires and even then it's one heck of a deal. Needs clutch, new passenger wing (as it's rusted), scuff repair on bumper, wheel speed sensors need replacing and an O2 sensor... So it's still one cracking deal
LED lights in a Celica would be an MOT failure, and can result in a fine if the police are bored enough to stop you. Also, driving at insane speeds in a built up area where people may be sleeping and children could be playing is not a brilliant idea.
Just to let you know that Celica is not for everyone to like !! I save save money by driving dem I own 1992 - 1994 -1996 - 2006 Celica n I own a gt86 as well how funny is this me more feel happy to drive my Celica 2006 vvti for a 1.8L you can’t go wrong 👍 you have to know about any car to get de best drive from dem vvti Celica love high rev Celica is not a family car lol 😂 n in London every one have baby I know for sure people love it but they know it not a family car sorry 😞 that is why most people don’t buy dem 👍👍👍

I agree with everything you've said. People ready do not realise what amazing value for money a Celica can offer and the feeling it can give it's owner!
One love Toyota Celica forever ❤
I had a Corolla T Sport with the same engine, it was a great little sporty car. I had the muffler removed so it was quite noisy too (perhaps a bit too noisy if we're being honest)
Nothing wrong with a noisy car as long as you owned it during a period where you're young enough not to care!
@@CarNitty You are correct! :D
Does it has a lift ? Vvtli ?
@@rehanali-hy9tk Yes it did, the 2nd gear lift was amazing
Great video man love it
Glad you enjoyed. Thank you
Love my GTS🥰
Great cars the offer a lot of bang for buck
@@CarNitty yes they do.
Really nice review. I love these little cars. 😎👍
Thank you for your kind comments. Glad you enjoyed the review
Nice review again, should do review of Mazda rx8, was fun car to drive, thanks
I'd love to get my hands on one of them. So many questions and topics surrounding them
Fantastic details review my bro. Keep up yhe great work ❤
Thanks for the kind words!
So it's just our American cousins who struggle with the pronunciation. You've got a great car history and I can clearly see you're a JDM man
I own a T Sport- what you say about the clutch does not exist on mine.
Hard to explain why this one had a high biting point then...
Owned a 2005 Celica 140bhp for 19 years and love it to bits.
That's a very long time for a car to be owned by one person. Glad the car's in good hands 🙏🏽
Ams hows it going ?
Great review
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for your viewership
When you're smiling like that it tells you everything you need to know about the car I love my Celica I like the fact that it has no torque it makes you work for it very engaging
I genuinely love high revving NA cars. It's just so rewarding to push on in
Loved the video bro beautiful car👊
It is! Shame it's been sold on now
@@CarNitty Thats ok mate ive just seen another one👍🏼
I have a GT had it for ages and I still love it
Great cars. Glad you still love yours!
I had this engine in the Corolla version , awesome at high rpm
Sounds like you need a new clutch
I managed to pull out of a junction on gear 3 so I do doubt that.
Got a 7th gen GT up here in NH. Very rare to see these anymore around here.
Very rare to spot in any country at this moment in time!
@@CarNitty 🙌
But isn't the DC2 a proper 90s car whereas the DC5 and Celica 7th generation were done during the same period
And I believe the DC5 launched in 2000 or 2001?
@@CarNitty Ahh so you could say DC5 was an answer to the Celica 190 then 😅
Precisely that
I have a 2001 celica gt 1zz since new but i always wanted to have the gts i guess im gonna go for one some day.
Very achievable dream. I hope you can get it
Well here in puerto rico celicas are not that cheap i saw yesterday a gts for almost 8 k $ i also saw another one for 5 k
Unfortunately inflation can make owning a car you desire quite hard. I really hope you can obtain your dream
Yea bro ill keep looking for a good deal. Thanls for your video i think is the most entertaining video review of a celice i have seen.
Do you have instagram?
Late comer to this video here, however re your comments on the clutch, back in the day I had this car and there was no such issue using the clutch. Didn’t have to fully press it down to change gear. Mine was similar to any prior manual car I had back then. I’d say if you had to press all the way down, then something was wrong, maybe needed adjusting. Just saying from my own experience with the car, albeit was some 15 years back or so.
Thanks for the info!
These guys just keep setting you up with a gear knob being blank 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think it's an inside joke Yan and Saiful are playing on me now... But to be fair, towards the end I pulled out of a junction on gear 3!!! 😎
No way DC5 benefited somehow compared to Celica. Look is much better, engines both have same systems VVTL-I and VTEC. And it’s Toyota by the way.
Got mine in Feb in red for £4k. Good condition and low mileage. Standard 140 version unfortunately.
Still a cracking little car to own regardless and I'm sure it puts a smile on your face regardless
So it's either "silly c@r", or "sell your car" 😂😂
I'm not sure I understand your reference
I started looking at Celicas and really want one as my first car...
If you can get one, do it without any hesitation! You won't regret it;
Yeah they definitely don't get much love I personally prefer the older GT4 Celica but these are definitely great cheap buys alternative to an EP3 £ wise
Definitely, you get the sports car look and literally save half the money of an EP3!
Miss my celica t sport. Now I have a family car 😭😂
Ah they're worth peanuts for the bang for buck. I'd have been selfish and kept it on the side!
@@CarNitty it started knocking really bad so had to get rid of it. I would get another one tomorrow If I could afford it.
Ah makes sense. Hopefully you'll get into something that puts a smile on your face soon
@@CarNitty Cheers pal. Hopefully get something decent soon👍
Have you not done a vid with a facelift corolla t-sport?
No, but I've reviewed it's competitor the EP3
dont mean to spoil this, but i still have yet to have a 2ZZ celica out pace.. and outlast my B18C civic EG on hardcore track work.
why would you expect it too?
That's a great car in it's own right
FYI the Latin word Celica would use the American stress. CElica.
Unfortunately, our British due doesn't quite apply
Allow the yanks calling it a Silly ka. I miss my 190 and it was surprisingly practical. Fitted 2 mountain bikes with both wheels off and seats down and the boot was surprisingly roomy.
Things I hated
The Powerband/Gearing.
Could never really get to the bottom of that before I sold the car
It eats radiators. Nearside/gutter would cause corrosion leading to the inevitable punched core and escalating temps
Things I loved
- neutral handling
- the looks - very timeless and you can be anything from a boy race to a discerning old chap and still suit the car
Thanks for your summary of your experience of your Celica!
If you buy another Celica 190 by any chance :P you can swap in the JDM ECU which lowers lift engagement to 5800rpm apparently
such a shame ULEZ is ruining the likelihood of people enjoying these cars
Any Celica which is 51 plate onwards is ULEZ compliant I believe so luckily these aren't that affected
I've sat in that exact celica and its rapid lol. I know the previous owner 😂
@@twistedmanbags it's a great car and it's a shame it doesn't get the love it deserves
i have a 01 celica gt its auto got it for graduation gift back in 04 i would have loved a manual but hey it has plenty of get up an go when i need it peppy in an out of traffic an merging on to interstate i dont get out here an try to race i dont care who has the faster car im a working man i care about gas prices more than all out horse power
You can always do a manual swap if you wanted to!
@@CarNitty true! but not on my salary lol
Just picked up a T sport 2zz for £1100... But yes car needs work🤣
A lot car for the money so not surprised it needs work!
@@CarNitty I can describe the work it requires and even then it's one heck of a deal. Needs clutch, new passenger wing (as it's rusted), scuff repair on bumper, wheel speed sensors need replacing and an O2 sensor... So it's still one cracking deal
Still sounds like it is
I have one. Should put a TRD exhaust on it
Definitely. It'll make it sound a lot better no doubt!
@@CarNitty oh for sure I love the sound on mine !!!
Vvt-i is not a violent as the v-tec but vvtl-i is or even better
LED lights in a Celica would be an MOT failure, and can result in a fine if the police are bored enough to stop you. Also, driving at insane speeds in a built up area where people may be sleeping and children could be playing is not a brilliant idea.
This car passes its MOT just fine and no insane speeds were reached in this vehicle at any given time
Driving with your park brake pulled?
Not at all
Handbrake
Bmw m54 330i has entered the chat! 🏆
Massive fan of the M54B30 but it's a completely different type of car in a 3 Series. Maybe a Z4 perhaps
Dice que es bajo en realidad no es tan bajo,un seat sport 124 con 40 años tiene el centro de gravedad mucho mas bajo,el celica es muy cutre
What is the ZR model?
ZR is just a trim level option that gives you certain levels of equipment
@@CarNitty Is that still 190hp?
I believe you can have the ZR option on any of the engine choices

Definitely the best bit
it's vvtl-i not jus vvti
the 1zz is vvti which is deals with cam timing n vvti is not same as vtec, 2zz is vvtl-i the L is lift which is vvl which is same as vtec please do ur research proper before u do ur videos

Firstly, this shoot occurred with less than 24 hours notice. That's the reality of being a RUclipsr. Things aren't as coordinated as you may think as the owner sold this car for a Lexus IS250.
I did the research I needed to do to make this review happen and it's a small oversight which has been pointed out in another comment and the thumbnail even reflects that.
In regards to your viewership, I'm glad you like the content and you're a regular viewer but you'd know this was a one off mistake as I do research on all featured cars before review
Nope not that cheap anymore unless you want to put a weight on your shoulder whit an oil drinking rust bucket
stop spreading misinformation, you dont know anything about these cars
Drive your bicycle and leave the cars please 👍

Honda Integra doesn't even look like a sports car
it looks like a 2 door SEDAN
yeah very ugly Honda is
I can see what you mean by that due to the rear end of the car
What if I told you it was the same designer at Toyota in LA who designed the Celica and the Prius
Wouldn't surprise me!
Vtech is not better than VVTL-i
LIFT from Yamaha is way better than Vtech
Honda fans always think their cars are better than Toyota but it is NEVER EVER actually been true.
It's similar technology. Hard to say what's better. Just VTEC has its fan boys
@@CarNitty so does the Yamaha tuned" GE" Engines from Toyota
and each generation was better than Honda at the time...
more KW from Toyota's Performance Engines..
