The internet has sucked away the mystique of real life subculture, to the point that "subculture" is merely larping as fictional archetypes that exists primarily on the internet, and not organically in clubs, meetups, and small magazines. You no longer create an outfit to wear to a concert, you do it to take photos and videos of yourself to post online, on a curated profile that is more what you just say you are than what you actually do. Its unreal and inauthentic. Despite being an online space and "social media" I think discord is potentially beneficial to the emergence of subculture, being that discord is not a wider, public forum in which ideas are spread to the mainstream in a curated form by way of "likes" "upvotes" and reductive memification. Discord, or more to the point, discord servers are private, independently run spaces without any form of user profiles, likes, sharing, or a way for things to spread to the mainstream and subsequently lose meaning and interest. What needs to happen is more regionally focused discord servers, with a bigger focus on real life events and meetups.
I have felt more subculture on the internet than outside of it. How has the internet sucked away such a mystique if there are still many people that create outfits that they will wear to concerts. What is unreal about posting about it online?
@@nielsgintowt thats what he's saying, the internet has reduced the subculture massively, before the internet or when it was in its infancy subcultures were many and were extremely easy to spot, now the subcultures have become online stereotypes that have been massively watered down and that people no longer ascribe to in real life outside of the internet.
@nunya baznus This isn’t even about being elitist. It’s about how the internet transforms and warps things. I don’t think the internet is bad when it comes to subcultures, especially since yea, malls and shit are dying. But now subcultures have become absolute caricatures. They’re empty shells, but I don’t necessarily blame the people that take part. When the scene revival/rawring 20s thing happened it was the most condensed caricaturized shit ever, but honestly I liked seeing people into the culture, but there’s nothing further/deeper, no connection with other people, you’re just shouting down a digital void.
@nunya baznus this has literally nothing to do with that because what I'm saying is that because the subcultures are no longer kept to their cliques and are instead commercialized by the internet they have lost their identity, do you really see people out in real life acting like goths did in early 2000s? Subcultures no longer express themselves as much as they did in the real world, if people no longer express subculture outwardly and instead merely project it onto the internet how are those subcultures alive and well at all? They have become a shadow of what they were, that isn't some boomer idea, when something becomes a stereotype and is commercialized so strongly nobody identifies with its values anymore and this is easily seen in the modern day where most subcultures have died in the real world and have evolved into entirely new things.

If cartoons have such a huge influence on the development of children then I must wonder if cartoons will ever be or already have been weaponised. It seems really easy to mold a fututre generation through the media it consumes in it's infancy and childhood. I mean furries would be almost nonexistent if it weren't for all the cartoons that contained anthro chracters.
Its been weaponized ages ago, people learned in the 80s that you can use them to sell merchandise, and then in the 90s use it to promote egalitarian propaganda and use it to shill for certain bullshit (e.g. Ren and Stimpy and sexuality at a young age)
It strikingly reminds me of the same connection of early reading interest at the toddler age for me, and being presented fable fantasy literature stories of imaginative scenarios, where that level of mindset can be used as a gateway for children into enjoying and understanding from cartoons easily for life. However the problem lays short when certain scenario sequences are rather presented unusually or obscure, exploitly made for unethical political gains or future ones, where it requires any child of common sense realizing the made-up socal structures if it makes sense to be smart and realistic, or dumb and fake.
@Sh Cr yeah, but only one of those shows is what I could really call “weaponized” Then again the creators of SU are so inept that I can’t really fathom them accomplishing anything as intended, so it’s really just a monkey firing an AK-74
If you want to see how a cartoon can be weaponized, look no further than Hedgehog and Squirrel. Or is it Squirrel and Hedgehog? Anyway it's a North Corean cartoon with pretty much all the themes you'd expect.
''When one creates phantoms for oneself, one puts vampires into the world, and one must nourish these children of a voluntary nightmare with one's blood, one's life, one's intelligence, and one's reason, without ever satisfying them.'' - Eliphas Levi
It's simply someone who invites you in order to offer you comfort. In these times of social reclusion, it's very, very reassuring to imagine someone (attractive might I add) who offers intimacy.
@@leirbag1595 But then people reject the offer and close themselves off with the excuse of "not simping" in fear of being ridiculed or made fun of because being vulnerable for a moment is not "manly". Or maybe this scepticism is somewhat founded too. That's my take on it. Interesting meme.
@Riso a manipulation attempt by the woman. She reluctantly offers her embrace and the guys see right through that. It's not genuine so they don't accept it. I get your point.
@Riso interesting. Never heard of that game. I see you're well trained then. People really dislike incongruence in general but others like you can spot it quicker. It's even harder with attractive women like the one in the meme too. Like they we all say...we have to think with the "right head" sometimes xD
In retrospect, a goth gf is going to be made a mommy if a man with this desire gets out of the Internet and into his sexuality. She can produce a tomboy or a femboy depending on the child.
Just a minor note: darkwave came from goth music, which came from post-punk. There's a lot more nuance than that, but generally that's how the genealogy goes. Great video
You're way too good to have a name like meme analysis and make videos like this, you're hella interesting and one of the best channels I've seen a while. Love ya big man
I'm 29 now but back in Middle School into High School there was a lot of Scene Girls, and a lot of Goth girls. I remember when guys wearing girl jeans was a thing lol and there was this one Goth Girl codenamed the Commando. She always had military clothing with skirts above jeans or long stocking and had these heavy boots with metal so when she walks it's like the Terminator footsteps sounds. I can't lie, I was slightly attracted to one scene girl who had her locker next to me who I was cool with.
lets be frank here, those guys don't want a "goth gf". they don't mean an actual goth girl, at all. they mean some tight leather/pvc/stockings kinky S&M girl, they just can't/won't articulate it. guys are simple creatures, when you get down to it.
Definitely, I have more of an alt kinda style but I got made fun of for it as well (not by ppl who were directly seeking out a big tiddy goth gf but just in general). Honestly most of the time they don't even want a goth gf they just want Raven from Teen Titans, lets be real.
As a girl with an alternative aesthetic, I can confidently say... yes it's all because I thought the goth looking girl in any cartoon was SO cool and I wanted to be like her. Gwen from TDI and Raven from TT are probably a big reason I dress the way I do now lol
Same honestly, I've cosplayed Raven countless times. It's actually funny because when I was in 5th grade going through my "I'm not like the other girls" phase, I used to think the emo/goth/alt look was "cringe" and now I absolutely love. I blame Raven from the of TT and Marceline from AT lol
In relation to the "sad lonely outsider", in order to get around feelings of unworthiness due to not feeling attractive enough and fears of the pain and consequences of rejection, the aim is to target those who are "outside" of normal social groups. This is of the fantasy that these outsiders are far easier a target to approach and court without facing off superior competition. That we ourselves believe we do not have to try very hard, that we can simply feign interest in the subject as an easy way in to talking to them and trick them into thinking we are interested in their lifestyle, when really most are looking for an easy lay. Similar to the other types of girlfriend mentioned in previous videos, it is still seen as another challenge for men to conquer, to posses as our own. Eventually the objective is to convince them to become a regular person so we don't have to pretend interest in their identity anymore, a practise both sexes engage in usually to the detriment of the relationship.
To take the Greek myth symbolism further, there are 2 primordial female gods, Gaia the earth mother and Nyx the goddess of night. Gaia gave birth to the world, Nyx gave birth the desires fears, hopes and dreams of the world. 2 archetypal feminine, the Great Gaia Mommy gf and Nyx the ultimate Goth gf!
Great take! I'm also thinking about the danganronpa characters as some kind of Greak gods of the the modern world, since they are also the embodiment of an idea, or, in their cases, a talent.
Believe it or not Nyx fits more naturally than you'd think. In some Orphic versions of the creation myth, Nyx is the lover of Phanes (the Primordial Eros). Literally a God of Life partnered with a dark Goddess
@@akaking7499 Then I wrap it up for you in a way, that makes it pretty intresting. The whole series (in the long run) is about to leave all obsessions for the extremes behind (hope and despair in this case), and then aim for the creation of the meaningful (future), while accepting both order and chaos(also hope and despair). The reason, why I think the characters are some kind embodyments (or at least, priests) of greek gods of the modern age, is the way, their whole existence is revolve around their talent. It often doesn't even matter, if they like their talents or not, because, one way or another, they will be forced to use it in order to survive, (for example the first killer aka. baseball-guy).
Great video, I really appreciate the dive into why we like what we what, & also the brief realization that we should at least have something in common with what we like. This was very educational

Thank you for your videos, man. They're always so interesting and thought provoking. I feel like there should be more serious analysis on memes and meme culture out there.
To be fair, a lot of goths don't listen to Sisters of Mercy, depending on the local scene. Around the Detroit area, most goths were more into EDM and industrial.
the goth gf reminds me of the Iranian masterpiece novel "the blind owl", literally being compelled to a supernatural attraction to a woman who embodies death in all its forms, to the point of being driven to suicidal insanity, the main character would even be considered a proto NEET incel.
Man, your channel really gives me motivation to read between lines the ancient mythologies, how no matter of the time, it affect us in some way but were ignorant of it. I really appreciate if someone give me advise, how to properly comprehend and where I should start.
Meme analysis is like the fully developed version of my edgy young self. I had always understood that memes were units of cultural transmission, and that they contained within them the purest and most raw manifestations of the collective human psyche, yet I was always having too much fun with the memes to ever take sit down and truly study them without laughing, I insisted that memes were the highest forms of truth and wisdom for the sake of being provocative and because it was funny, but I was right. Memes matter.
Since arguing with conspiracy bots got my account banned, I'll drop the same comment I did earlier: As someone who has had several goth gfs, its not worth it guys. The confident alternative exterior often hides an insecure person, who will often hurt you more than being alone. Stay safe kings
Also I would like to add one thing to the subculture topic: for some odd reason, modern society discourages dating within the same subculture or interest group. I've seen this a lot, especially in subcultures closely related to music, like goth. Learning an instrument to get laid used to be a completely legitimate practice. I know several professional musicians who started off just trying to impress girls. These days, that same practice is viewed as desperate and dishonest, as you mentioned in the video
My man over here spitting truth. Real goth girls are, without exception, fundamentally broken people and you shouldn't want to put yourself through dating one.
As a guy who also had some goth gfs I totally agree BUT I wouln’t discourage someone from wanting a goth gf. I mean the experience is worth it(if you are mentally stable) so get that big tiddy goth have fun and don’t expect it to last long.
@@WVLFGAR Just find a big tiddy woman with good music taste, who has a sense of alt style without being completely consumed by it. Essentially, a goth girl that grew up
For your furry video I highly recommend you researching Osamu Tezuka, the creator of Astro Boy. He's also known as the father of anime as a medium, but even deeper he's simultaneously the father of furries. Just look at his films such as "Kimba the Lion"and "Bagi". A secret stash of furry erotica was discovered by his daughter after his death. I'm also a big Robert Crumb fan, but unfortunately he's not the furry source.
I mean, it's essentially the same as analysing old cartoons and pieces of media. "Memes are the DNA of the soul" is really not a joke. The things that people share and relate to are a witness to how we think and feel.
I am left to reminisce over the goth girls I have actually interacted with in real life and think it somewhat tragic that subcultures like goth, punk and the like have been reduced to mere aesthetics these days. It used to be that people who wore those sorts of looks had very real interests and energy to be shared. I connected to such people through shared taste in music, as you said. And with that said I'm going to assume it's okay for me to have a thing for goth girls because I'm into the Cure and the Smiths.
Holy cow. I've just been given a TON of insight as to the how and why my best friend is how he is. He has most of the things going on that you talked about which results in such behavior and interests. Thank you very much.
Really good video! I think it's interesting how clearly it correlates with my and many of my "edgier" girl friends' lived experiences. The meme of "has anyone ever told you you look like ramona flowers" is a perfect example of this. The people who say things like that to alternative girls see them as this character of "coolness". They don't view alt girls or "goth gfs" as real people, rather a personification of the "coolness" they feel they lack or that they grew up without. It's similar to the manic pixie dream girl, and when a person views another person in that way it can be really harmful (to both parties). Sorry for the long ass comment, i just felt i maybe had something to add as someone who's been called a "goth gf"
"He started cartooning" Im in the middle of making a cartoon webcomic, all the while wishing i had a goth gf, and grew up and am still go through that described abuse...yikes

Great video once again. You draw the distinction between the inside (online) and outside (offline). The prior being active (socially), the former being non-active and non-social. How do you explain 4chan boards or Reddit subreddits with their own dynamics, rules and customs? Where users refer to each other as comrades anons or autists.
@@nielsgintowt >I have felt more subculture on the internet than outside of it.
That's the problem

Simpsons wave
It strikingly reminds me of the same connection of early reading interest at the toddler age for me, and being presented fable fantasy literature stories of imaginative scenarios, where that level of mindset can be used as a gateway for children into enjoying and understanding from cartoons easily for life. However the problem lays short when certain scenario sequences are rather presented unusually or obscure, exploitly made for unethical political gains or future ones, where it requires any child of common sense realizing the made-up socal structures if it makes sense to be smart and realistic, or dumb and fake.
@Sh Cr yeah, but only one of those shows is what I could really call “weaponized”
Then again the creators of SU are so inept that I can’t really fathom them accomplishing anything as intended, so it’s really just a monkey firing an AK-74
If you want to see how a cartoon can be weaponized, look no further than Hedgehog and Squirrel. Or is it Squirrel and Hedgehog?

These analyses are extremely fascinating, you've earned yourself a subscriber
