The grit in Claudio's voice in that opening line has that "oh shit. This is gonna be that kind of song" quality.
I think when its all said and done, these guys will be remembered for having one of the most consistent yet diverse discographies in progressive and heavy music.

at first i enjoyed thier music but thought that this was going to be a niche/ fad band that would disappear in a few years. year of the black rainbow was the album that really made me think that this band has legs like iron maiden.

That first 20 second , walking the sounds , from right to left, stepping over my warping mind, Fucking Amazing . Opening sounds straight up like a Flood level in Halo. Love it.
I don't know what it is, man. But whenever I hear the chorus, it just fits the album art so well. Like I can see the camera panning around them, holding each other like that, while everything's burning and breaking around these two unheavenly creatures-and nothing else matters

Been saying this Afterman: Ascension. I love Coheed for real, but the addition of Zach IMO was that spark that lit that fire and since then they've been playing with this confidence that wasn't necessarily always there before. Dude's a beast on that bass.

Oh boy...
I can't tell if this is my favorite on the album, or 'Love Protocol'.
Starts out with a real sci-fi sound to it, so I was immediately hoping for some more progressive stuff.
I wasn't disappointed!
That verse builds into something that's chunky and has balls.
"Come on and walk among us, come on and walk among us, bad girls walk among us, come on and walk among us"
I've figured it out. What I like about this and 'Love Protocol' is that the verses make a stable foundation for a stellar pre-chorus. Listen to the pre-choruses a few times coming out of the verses and shifting to the chorus- then pick apart every instrument (yes, I count Claudio's voice as an 'instrument'). It's just a sort of display of how well these four guys are playing together.
My only major complaint with the album is the production quality on a lot of the songs. On this one though, the levels on the instruments are solid. Sometimes maybe I want Travis's guitar work to be louder. I want the volume up on Josh's hat.
But in the end, this song kills it.

I'm not sure why, but at this point I get a strong Good Apollo II vibe from this- like later in the album during The End Complete.
It's damn near IMPOSSIBLE to not bob your head along to the chorus in this. It's not a really forced projection.
It's a damn delivery. A proclamation (PROGlamation?) It has impact and bite. And it's going to be insane to sing along to live.
There's that dry sound that I love from Claudio's mahogony body Explorer. And on the second time through the chorus, Josh delivers those double bass taps (he doesn't use an actual double bass pedal, he's striking twice solidly with a single pedal, at least I believe still). I feel like the recording quality on this song in terms of the drums is superior to a lot of the other songs on the album.
I agree with Travis needing to turn up during the chorus, but idk I kinda like how it is, adds an ambience without intruding on the rhythm guitar and drums. I honestly want to hear this live. . . I think it'd crush for a mid setlist or an encore. Great energy from these guys, I've been listening since In keeping secrets, and I'm just as impressed with the new stuff as I was back then. They've evolved incredibly well with the times. . still sucks they won't play this on the radio(or any Coheed song at that)

This is the best stuff in a long time. I totally agree on the Explorer tone. It gives me like this in-the-trenches vibe similar to the chugging rhythms in Gravemakers and Gunslingers. Incredible stuff.
