Hope everybody likes a good ol' fashioned one tire fire! Had fun with this one, although the actual productivity of this episode is a bit lacking. Just decided there weren't enough (or any!) actual burnouts on this channel and couldn't pass up this opportunity. Also, at 10:02 I mistakenly said "brake boosting" instead of "power braking" and didn't realize it until the video was uploaded so here comes the angry mob! Everybody off of the streets!
That’s it, where’s my pitchfork!!
You need to learn how to do a burnout from a Australian haha 😂 I can teach you if you like 🇦🇺
That I can forgive, but... You should really watch yourself when spraying combustibles straight into the intake manifold. One backfire and it's goodbye hand! If you have a PO box for the channel I'll mail you a present to help with that.
@@TheBrokenLife That is certainly a fair point, an intake backfire would be bad stuff! And I appreciate the offer! Don't have a PO box set up currently but I would like to in the future. I'm sure I'll mention it in an update video or something if I manage to set that up!
@@FuzzyDiceProjects Or if you trust me, I'll mail it wherever. I'm trying to butter you up for a Blazer on Blazer podcast of who bought the worst one! :)
I love your voiceovers they are informative and funny too
I agree I normally get bored watching these videos from the lack of voiceovers or just being boring but his videos are great by the things he does during the rebuilds
Just put a louder muffler on it then you won't be able to hear the lifters...Problem solved
Or a loud stereo system
@@genejackson4261 Or, hear me out... Both.
I've already got both with a flowbastard exhaust and a super 10 for a muffler and 2 12" skar audio subwoofers pushing 1250 rms and in a huge ported box
Modern problems call for modern solutions
Yeah but he did all that work and he wants to be able to hear the radio on in the car is running
Can we see the final product being shown to the person you got it from
Heck yea! That's a good idea
He is watching the videos
it is his neighbor so I imagine he has at the very least heard what been going on
Great idea @ Fuckin' /w\SSSLLLAAYYYEERRGGGHHH/w\
Update:
I still need Google for bicycle maintenance
But did you buy a project car?
you bought a car yet?
@@aleksifrmdao not yet, but a drive one of our mothers two
honestly man you impress me. I hit like before I even watch the videos. I am an extreme fan of your style. You capture the nostalgia of working on old cars, cut your videos well, present them professionally and give plenty of knowledge. I can tell you are a young dude but you know your stuff. Again, I appreciate and look forward to your straight forward/ home style content. Keep it up man, HONESTLY you could have your own show on public TV YOU ARE THAT GOOD!!!!
The paint looks pretty good on this ole girl;
Yeah but the drivers side rear quarter panel though ;(
that dent needs to be pulled out with toilet bowl plunger, right this instant. beautiful car I love it.
dual cherry bomb m80s for $40 bucks, problem solved
Ole boy, not girl
@@cruzechevy3485 i think he wanted to say "old"
Doing burnouts in a firebird and calling it an Italian tuneup is like adding ketchup to spaghetti-O’s and calling it fine Italian cuisine
Wait, how did you get your hands on my grocery list?
Fuzzy Dice Projects Lmao I laughed out loud at this. Great channel btw. Keep up the good work!
It starts just like any TBI I've had. I think your lifters will quiet down once you drive it on the highway for a while. Those L03 305's aren't powerhouses but at least yours is in a Firebird and not a '91 Roadmaster wagon like mine was. It was a DOG. I have a few videos on my channel of it from way back in 2010.
Really liking this build, keep up the good work.
Sssooooo... Where is episode 7? Lol I need my fixs 😂😂
@Digby Dooright its out now
I love today (sarcasm intended) you can buy a car for 200$ but new tires cost 400$
Lifters are tickin'...
BETTER DO A BURNOUT
Hey i really like this series and your videos. Keep up the good work
Man the sound of that older GM v8 cranking and starting takes me right back to my childhood. Chevy conversions, trucks, caprices, Buick lesabre wagons, everything.
My college roommate did cheat on me with a torque wrench. I told him that is not how you use that expensive instrument. Still hard to get that image out of my head.
My roommate got really torqued when I caught him.
Bruuuuuh.
I'm dead asf😂😂
Lucas Oils make a hydraulic lifter additive that I've used several times with success on engines with hydraulic lifter/tappet castanets going on. One of the vehicles, which really sounded horrible, so bad that it sounded like it had serious internal engine issues, has racked up another 100,000 miles since being treated without any repeat of the tapping, of course regular oil and filter changes at the correct intervals have had a lot to do with it...
You can also add some ATF to the engine oil. ATF has about the viscocity of 5W30 and it is packed with dopes for cleaning and for keeping oilseals flexibel.
The cleaning dopes help clean out stuck hydraulic lifters.
@@jfv65 Agree, I used ATF for scrubbing down cylinder walls for a new engine that hadn't broke in the rings properly... ATF is like a detergent so be careful.
1:38....you can see a spark arcing from a spark plug wire. That will cause a misfire. Possibly adding to the ticky noise. EDIT: You can see the arcing at 1:16 too. Look at the area ahead of the master reservoir at the base of the valve cover.
Good catch, i think it needs a full tune up and exhaust manifold gasket or donut gasket. That should solve alot of the sound then u can hear the valve train with a stethoscope
This has definitely been an interesting and educational adventure! I'm totally hyped for episode 7!
I stumbled upon your channel by accident a few hours ago by clicking on the first episode of this car series...
what are the chances of you uploading a new episode while me watching the old ones...hmmmm... I guess I’m a lucky man.
Fashionable Skeleton same happened to me hahaha I just hope he uploads the next one ASAP
Watch the S10 Blazer series too it's a pretty cool build. Small block powered S10 Blazer.
umad42 will do
I love this series. I wish I would have found it when it was all done so i could binge watch them all haha! Great vids!!! Keep it up!
Hey dude, love the vids and appreciate the commentary, you remind me of one of my best friends...same sense/style of humor. Oh! Anyway, I noticed at the 1:39 mark your spark plugs and wires are arcing...time for a tune-up? Anyhow, awesome job! Keep up the great work!
I would personally recommend avoiding introducing solvents into your engine due to the very likely risk of disturbing carbon deposit's from years of build up and having some bits of that stuff clogging up oil passages like for your cam, lifters, pick up screen or oil ports for things like your timing chain tensioner. It's really best to slowly and gently clean up an engine with good oil like Castrol Edge High Mileage for example. Other than that the project looks like it's really coming along, good job!
I’m a teenager and this is a lot more interesting to watch than another teen adding another turbo to the same mustang everyone else has keep it up 👍
After getting valve cover off I would have gone the slight extra mile of measuring the valve rod end to push rod lever gap.
I prefer the "is it very important that its torqued to spec" school of thought when it comes to tightening bolts
Spoken from a man who's snapped off a small block chevy valve cover bolt a time or two! /w\/w\
Used Moto medic oil treatment run it for about 3 hours and change your oil with full synthetic Valvoline 10w 40 with a K&N Filter and it will shut those lifters up guaranteed
1:40 It looks like you have spark jumping on the #5 sparkplug wire at the engine block and manifold.
Seafoam...I put that shit in everything!!! Suck up a bottle through a vacuum line..your top end will be squeaky clean.
BTW seafoam DOES WORK for carbon and so does e 85. I've tested them both.
Im really looking for my own firebird, grew up on a street where a neighbor had one and ive loved them since. Looking for a project car that i can make my own though, and possibly something with a little kick! Wish i found this steal
Cant wait for the car having exterior/interior detail :(
Can't stop watching these...
I don't own a car.
Please for the love of god, shove a deflated basketball in the quarter and inflate it then clean of the paint scrape with some gas...Also STP oil stop leak or Lucas will coat the internals, significantly decrease engine noise while increasing oil pressure.
You read my mind
This series is amazing. This gets me excited for when I’ll start driving . (hoping I can get a good deal on a ‘98 - ‘02 Camaro when it comes time)
I'm a big believer of Marvel Mystery Oil. I've also had success with adding 1/2 quart of transmission fluid to the oil.
I did this with one quart of ATF in the original 250 I had in my 78 nova. Prior owner(s) did not take care of poor thing and the lifters started ticking bad. The ATF worked great and even stripped the grime off about half the rockers... which promptly plugged up the oil passages to the main bearings. Oops. Stopped driving it when I started hearing knocking. Upon tear down up all the main bearings were toast. Oh well gave me an excuse to build up and install the 355 that was laying around!
I found that seafoam does a better job cleaning carbon and build up as a soak more than an engine additive. I had to clean the intake on my tacoma which was horribly gunked up. It had never been taken off in 20 years. So I poured some in the intake and let it sit for a while and then using a wire brush, scrubbed and scrubbed and it melted all the build up. I've also used it to soak valves from dirtbikes as I was cleaning the cylinder head. It didn't take very much to really get the carbon to come off.
Once it's melted off, where does all that intake carbon go?
@@missingremote4388 This was with it off the engine so no, it didn't go into the engine
great video, burnouts fix everything. i don’t understand how you torque every bolt you put on but reused old oil. you probably torque your valve stem caps. the car is coming along nice.
The burnouts are enough for me. Lol. I'm re-living my memories. Thanks
Making great progress on this special car keep unloading and doing the good work
Burnouts to quiet noisy lifters...
You’re my kind of guy!
That’s a normal cold start for a old small block. I’ve have many and worked on plenty. No worries man!
Mine start like that too. 😃
I used some of that "mystery oil" that said it could clean out some sticky lifters, worked a treat. The oil turned really black, so it prolly cleaned more than just the lifters-- changed the oil and it was so quiet.
that slo-mo burnout for the win man!!! that last still image at the end of the video of the burnout should be framed on the wall. i love all your series, but this one is the best because third gen F bodies hold a special place in my heart. i cannot wait till the weather turns nice and i can get my IROC out.
I agree, frame that picture! One day many years from now you'll look at it and be happy you did.
Love it, can't wait to see it. Bring it to Mason Dixon dragway this summer!
Did anyone else see on the driver's side spark plugs wires arcing out
After you have been doing it for a long time you get a '' Torque Touch '' and you don't need the torque wrench all that often
I had a 91 Camaro with a 305. I never got the lifter ticking to go away fully. Eventually I just started ignoring it. The engine never gave me any trouble.
I had a similar lifter noise once...cost me a $1000 for a new louder stereo system!
wanna make that car a bonafide tire slayer? toss the old throttle body 305 and junk 700r4 and rear end. find a wrecked 96 or 97 trans am or camaro with a 6 speed and swap the rear end, motor and transmission. the lt1 of the 96 is easily a ton more powerful. 285hp and 325lb/ft. the borg warner t56 is solid and stout.
I’ll usually just use a torque wrench for the engine and suspension and ballpark everything else, but I’m not gonna get mad at you wanting to be correct and thorough. 👍🏼
put a quart of ATF in the engine its detergent oil I have had good results with this for years
most ATF is just highly refined oil. ATFs are sealed systems so there is no need for detergent in the fluid.
Craving episode 7...😎
When and if the radio works Blast some Led Zeppelin to get rid of the noise from the lifters.
I'm eXspecialy happy to see the car run ;-)
Can you do a good clay bar and compound wax job?
Looks like pretty good paint, would love to see it at it's best
Watch project farms video on using the spray sea foam it completely fixed his engine
Was going to mention that myself! Made me a believer in Seafoam...
I just did this with my Jeep it had noise on cold starts and it seems to have fixed it.
Just put a nice cam, new lifters and a 4 barrel carb on it and it'll be a certified tire shredder!
Maybe some 3:50 or 3:70 gears as well
this is like my fifth time watching this series and i cant get enough. the sound i heard after the burn outs sounds like the same tap when i loosened the rockers to adjust them while its running. with the engine running, loosen a rocker until you hear a tick, then slowly tighten until the tick just goes away.. then tighten a half turn, rinse repeat. try that out and maybe that tick will go away.
I had 2 1991 Caprice 9C1 cars with 305 TBI engines. TBI injectors tick. I just learned to live with the noise. awesome car, though!
OK I have a stupid question: I understand that it doesn't have a locking differential, so the wheels can spin independently of each other, but why is it always the right side wheel that spins when he's doing the burnouts?
Triva fact! Nankang tires are made of recycled rubber erasers!
Love your bird vids, I have owned a 79 gold bought with 23k on her, lost it due to not getting paid when I was in the US Navy. Have had an 80 and an 85 thanks again, i look forward to these
I love your voiceover it's so calming and EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE I learned so much watching this video
Why not try converting it into a Limited Slip Diff with some new carbon fiber clutches to spin both tires
Hi I really like your videos and the effort you put into them. Keep up the good work. Also I’m very excited for the next episode and the wait is killing me
I've owned two 91 Firebirds in my time (both of the V6 variety) and they were great cars and I thought it was the best looking body styling for the 3rd gens. Great find on yours. Enjoying the videos.
Hi buddy, what job do you do for a living? Assuming RUclips is not your full time job.
You seem very knowledgeable about every aspect of the build. Love the videos.
He’s a nighttime nurse
I fixed an old GM engine using Bestline Engine Treatment work like a champ to clean the lifters.
These videos are great. I'm loving this build it gives me some inspiration to continue on my own build.
Nice burnouts! I had an 87' V6 car that was $2k I took completely apart and sanded down for paint to put in the 383 stroker motor from my old 83' car with Recaro T/A parts that had been wrecked and redone a few times. Anyway, I never did finish it but you can see the 83' in this vintage 1996 VHS tape with a 71 Challenger blowing off a tire at my Burn outs & Boobs Firebird and Challenger video!
I had the same type of tick in my 2000 dodge Durango I used Lucas oil additive and it silenced it
May have an exhaust manifold leak. Also, some mobile1 annual protection or penzoil platinum full synthetic will clean her up real nice without having to use additives. And stay away from fram filters.
I had never done a burn out before but now I feel that I can. :) Thank you.....:)
Dude, let me tell you, I absolutely love your channel. Keep all this up, I enjoy the quality and progression of your work!!
Man, I love this channel. You’re so calm, yet funny and you usually know what you’re doing. Keep it going! :D
Loving this build rescuing a classic firebird always a good thing 😀😀😀
Those GM tbi systems don't hold fuel pressure. The feed line should hold fuel in it though
Good i love seeing this car here because I know you are going to fix it up
If it squeals, it's not as dry as it looks, at least in the tread area. Burn them suckers down. Full brake stand.
Woah, shoes in this video
your content is good man i enjoy that you arent an over the top youtuber and seem like a real person
I wonder what your neighbor thought when he saw it doing burnouts, good video!
you saying "nut" is very satisfying
Love your videos keep up the great work I always watch till the end
I dig these budget builds. Especially on a clean older car. Great video!
Love these videos. The 91 Firebird is my favorite project of yours.
Rislone oil treatment worked great on the lifters in my 08 Tahoe.
Great channel! You guys are great!
(Ep.7) ?
I've owned several vehicles with TBI small blocks. 305 and 350. In my experience these engines are not very happy running 5w-30 once they get some wear on them. When new its fine, but after the 100 - 150K mile mark they start to tick, burn oil, and have lower oil pressure at idle. 10w-40 is your best friend after a small block Chevy has hit 100K miles.
I don't know where you've heard that the 305's are prone to lifter ticking, I've owned a bunch of 3rd gen formula's and TA's and I've never had a lifter tick. Secondly, the roller lifters are less tolerant of misadjustment (as compared to flat tappet with enough additive in the oil) and also make noise faster when misadjusted.
That said... I'm pretty sure your noise is not an internal engine noise at all, I'm pretty sure that's an exhaust leak at the manifold. Check carefully with an inspection mirror AND make sure all the manifold bolts are tight- sometimes you'll see it under the ports, usually the middle 2 ports, but it could be any of them and sometimes you won't see anything but you'll find that the bolts are loose. Honestly, the only way to tell for sure is to pull them off and see where the carbon deposits are.
If you're convinced you have a sticky lifter you should be able to find it pulling the valve cover and checking basically like you check adjustment (lots of the time that lifter plunger will just drop when you push down on the rocker) and other than taking it out and either taking it apart and cleaning it or just replacing it, the best old school fix is to use a quart of ATF in your oil (it's a thinner lubricating oil with a mess of detergents added to clean deposits).
Boy do I miss my old firebird!
Warm weather is coming and this video isn't helping my want for a project car to work on
That's dope! Looking good buddy!
Damn this dude is cheap but probably has more money then me lol
I use oil treatment viscosity additive in my mom's Jeep to quiet the valve train, does an excellent job doing so. ZDDP formulated oil treatment on the lifters might help too, giving some zinc insulation between the cam and roller, and the treatment itself being sticky enough to give the cam something to ride on for lubrication. An engine sitting for a long time should be treated just like a rebuilt one, NEVER let it idle, rev it to at least 2,000 rpms for several minutes, oil pressure must be built up and circulating as quickly as possible, and get those rings relubricated and seated again.
You probably need to remove the valve covers and retune the rocker arms with the engine running. With that style air intake you may have to leave the air cleaner connected. Usually with gm 350 and 305 tune engine while the engine is running loosen the rocker arms one at a time until it starts to clatter then tighten until it stops clattering then tighten another 1/2 turn. Repeat for each rocker arm. A 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais 5.0 I used to own, I had to rebuild and replace a bunch of stuff. After about a month after getting it running again it sounded like the engine was starving for oil. I had automotive tech class and thats how I learned to tune the rocker arms on a 5.0 305 and 5.7 350 gm engines. So I tuned the Oldsmobile's engine and at first when I started the lifters were not spiting any oil out. So I tuned each rocker arm properly with the engine running and all of the lifters worked except for the first one at the front on the driver's side was trashed. The engine sounded way better. The guy I bought the car from said he tuned them but with a tune up valve cover on each side. After I retuned the engine I found that each rocker arm was around 2+ turns to tight.
lifter noise ive just replaced them in a gm olds 88 fixed it BUT that engine had so much sludge in the engine I still dont know how it ran then the transmission blew up and made a HUGE crashing noise so what did we do sold it to the junkyard oh and something was knocking but that knocking went away when put into reverse
Plus with V8 's it helps to use 10w30 up to 20w50 and Lucas oil. Valvoline max life is a good choice for a used V8 engine plus Lucas oil.
Is pulling the motor and having a shop hone the cylinders and you get all new parts if you need to and then reassembly? That be cool. But I'm sure a ton of work and time. Sounds like the motor will need a rebuild.
