  • I loved the (few) gladiolus that bloomed in my garden this year which was a bit of a surprise as I have never paid them much attention before. The growing conditions in my garden however are really bad so less than 50% of the corms actually flowered so I am digging them all up, washing them and separating out the fresh growth from the old mother corms so I can transplant them to the allotment for a hopefully much better bloom next season.
I'm Pheigi at From The Witch's Garden, a Scottish girl trying to grow cut flowers on my allotment in Kanagawa prefecture in Japan. Remember to subscribe if you want to follow along and see if we actually get any flowers at the end of the season or if it is all a crispy burnt mess.

Nice vid! What was wrong with Scotland that you had to move to Japan? lol ;) I left these in my shed for a couple of weeks and there's furry mold on them :/ got them from my grandad, I never washed them, maybe I should. My shed is really cold so it shouldn't have caused mold, gunna bring em inside to wash and dry I guess.

It was the old: 'teach abroad for a year for life experience but met a boy and 17 years later still here' movie plot.
Mold doesn't sound good. We wash them as the wet mud sitting on the bulb can cause rot. I think some of my ranunculus got mold in my shed because of lack of airflow so maybe give them a wash then let them dry completely before storing them somewhere with better air flow. Good luck with your growing.

@@fromthewitchsgarden Nice! and thanks. wasn't sure if I should leave the dried roots on or long shoots and cormels cause they trapped in moisture and dirt. Lost a few due to not completely drying out rotted, got a few dozen that look fine. I'm in 9a apparently, and weather has been unusually warm for december, it was 14 yesterday here in Sunderland, my crocus are coming up already!

@@alegomanYTPs I hope the ones you have left give you a good show in the summer. I passed a big bunch of daffodil coming up at the side of the road on the way to the supermarket today and had to do a total double take. Daffodil in December? Some people take their crocus as a sign of when to start putting in spring seeds as it shows the ground has warmed enough for things to grow. I wouldn't trust it this year though, December seems a little optimistic for a last frost date.
