Growing Stock Flowers, Selecting For Doubles
It has been 3 weeks since I sowed my stock seeds and they are looking great so its time to grab my scissors and start culling. Here I explain the simple way to tell which seedlings will be double flowers and which will be single.

Building a Low Tunnel for My Freesia and Ranunculus
Просмотров 26414 дней назад
Last year I lost all of my freesia in a late cold snap where the wind dried them out and turned them crispy. My ranunculus suffered a similar fate. this year I am determined to look after them and have a beautiful early spring crop so I am out on the allotment putting up a low tunnel to protect from the wind. Starting Stock Flowers and Snapdragon Seeds, Autumn Sowing Spring Flowers

In Zone 9b it takes a while for things to cool down so I am here in November finally starting my spring flower seeds specifically snapdragon and stock as well as some surprise ranunculus seeds. Having learned from previous seasons I am changing up the varieties I grow and trying a new growing method to try and get the most blooms possible from my tiny flower garden. Starting Ranunculus and Anemone Corms

This year I am doing my ranunculus and anemone slightly differently from years past and skipping the pre-sprout stage as my climate doesn't really require it and every year I lose corms to mould so this year I am going to pre soak then get them straight into the ground. Autumn Direct Sowing Spring Flowers

Growing Sweet Pea, Autumn Sowing For Success

I have had a hard time with sweet pea over the last few years with them starting strong and transplanting terribly, getting killed off by cold snaps or just taking FOREVER to put on any height and giving disappointing crop yields while taking up a lot of room on the allotment. But not this year. i am changing up the garden position and getting them in the ground early. This year I will have mas...

Digging and transplanting Dahlia at Peak season - Moving to the new allotment

I need to get the dahlia dug up and transplanted into the new garden so we can finally say goodbye to plot 17. The Dahlia are still blooming and I would love to get some more flowers off them before the end of season but we have to be off the old plot so I am attempting to cut them back, transplant and (fingers crossed) get them to keep blooming. I also have to dig through the patch and see how...

Your welcome 🌱
Love the watering tip!
I got it as a tip in the comments on an older video and am so greatful as it makes everything so much easier. Off to water them now 🌱
Keeping one cell open is genius!
It really does make things so much easier 🌱
I was thinking the same...me not making the cut, but here I am all wonky and misshapen. It's certainly ruthless when it comes to specific bugs in my garden. I'm a great green ogress, my hands stained with the blood of my enemies. Poor bugs =(
Great green ogress🤣 I’m picturing fraggle rock.
❤
Thank you🌱
You can grow ranunculus from seed but they don’t always flower the first year, and if they do they’re usually very short stems. Basically their first year isn’t necessarily representative of what they’ll do once corms mature.
That is great to know thank you. They have germinated but are still tiny compared to my stock and snapdragon planted the same day.
@ Noble Flowers had some videos on growing ranunculus from seed that might be helpful to you. With most people growing from corms, there are few videos out there on growing from seed and theirs are the ones I remember were really good. I think the channel’s name’s changed since; if you’re unfamiliar, her name’s Phaedra and they’re in Australia. I remember maybe 2 or 3 videos a couple years ago?, but they may have updated ones by now.
@@lilacmile I watch Phaedra too. I remember her saying she was trying seeds, she was also the first flower farmer I saw trying to reuse her corms but im not sure if she did an update, I will go check.
@@fromthewitchsgarden what is her channel’s name? Is her climate similar to ours? I’m in Portugal, 10b zone, high humidity in winter, scorching summers 😊
@ I couldn’t find any updates but rewatched her video about growing ranunculus from seed from 2 years ago and still thought it really good. Encompassing and concise. Much success with your seedlings!
Hi l. From Canada last year l lost the tag for my stock so l didn’t no what they were l got them in the garden in late June they did grow but come falll pulled them out except one plant and would you believe up until yesterday it was still living and we have had many frost s today we are getting a heavy snow storm so that will be the end of it. I’ve only seen two of your u tube blogs and l’m wondering why you such a Bonnie lass is living in Japan if you don’t mind me asking ,my mom was born in Scotland.
Hope you are keeping cozy in the snow. I came to Japan for a year after university to teach English and life happened. 18 years later and I still haven’t found my way home yet.
You look very glamorous! I should be outside trying to do garden maintenance but just can't seem to muster myself. The freesia will be putting on quite the show for you and scenting the whole neighborhood in the evenings while in bloom. Lots to look forward to... =)
I would say windswept more than glamorous🤣 I really want these freesia to do well this year 🤞🏻
👍
thanks
Thanks so much for your review of the seeds hopefully we can learn good things from here i am your new friend
Thank you, they are all growing well and it is time for me to start selecting for doubles which will be next weeks video. I hope they are useful/enjoyable to you 🌱
Hi Peggy, I enjoy watching your videos and seeing what you’re growing. Also, has anyone ever told you that you look like the actress Rebecca Ferguson?
Never, but I will take that compliment thank you very much especially as I am usually sweaty and covered in mud/ mosquito bites in my videos 🦟
The 'leave one empty' is such a great tip! Hello from Glasgow!
It really does make watering so much easier. Are you still under snow there? ☃️
@@fromthewitchsgarden nah it's just super frosty and icy just now. We're at -1 so my garden's pretty much gone to pot haha
How crazy about everything melting in the shade 😮. I am trying quartet stock this year and excited about it. I keep saying I’m going to try to save ranunculous seeds so I’ll be following along with your experience. Another RUclipsr from Australia has done it but I don’t remember what the flowers looked like. I actually like the more open ones too
I couldn’t believe it when I pulled out the little pod and it was just a warped, melted mess. My stock germinated so quickly and are already looking great, the ranunculus has only sprouted one so far though…
The "Black Prince" are the snapdragon I grew last year, my first time ever growing snaps from seed. They were more of a mounding plant but I think yours will get much more direct sunlight than mine did so I hope they grow more erect for you. You deserve lots and lots of flowers. By the way I say Autumn too. I also enjoy hearing your enthusiasm and many tips so talk as long as you want... =)
Awwww thank you, I mean if you can’t talk about snapdragon seeds for at least 30 mins are you even a gardener at all 🤣
@@fromthewitchsgarden Haha! I concur!
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO!
Thank you, I hope it was useful for you 🌱
Try to make short video no one watches looooong videos
I'm watching
😆 thank you
I have a lot to say 🤣
@@fromthewitchsgarden 🤣
The videos are perfect as they are, many of us like long videos.
I tried a mix including some striped ones and the mix came up v well. They are just for my satisfaction ! What survives and what dos not is purely a random event!
So many of my favourite from previous seasons have been things I would never have originally chosen but came from a mix or were all I could find, it’s one of the reasons I like to switch a few things up every season and keep trying new varieties and colours. I’m definitely looking forward to spring to see what will pop up.
I also lost a bunch of Ranuncs to mold. Now I really just put them in the ground (even unsoaked). They seem to do fine
The first year I grew anemone I didn’t know you were meant to soak them and they all came up fine. I understand why big producers want to pre sprout but for the average grower I really think it’s an unnecessary extra layer of complication…I hope, I may have to eat my words if nothing flowers come spring.
All of your tulips are going to be great. The really black, simple one, which should be Queen of Night is a classic!! The last two types you showed us (if I recognize them correctly) should be Carnaval de Nice and parrot tulip Estella Rijnveld. They are actually both historic tulips, developed at the beginning of the 20th century and Carnaval de Nice also has RHS awards. I also have these two and Queen of Night to grow in pots in my German balcony and garden in Crete. Between Germany and Greece, all the friends I want to give some bulbs to, and the very affordable prices here in Europe, I've bought soooo many bulbs 😅😅😅😅 but I'm sure we'll both enjoy them immensely 😍😍😍
I’m so jealous of your cheaper bulbs 😫 it’s great to hear of someone with similar taste in flowers and colours, your balcony is going to look super dramatic. I think Tokyo lies at the same latitude as Greece, I wonder if our flowers will bloom at a similar time?
You are correct that the red and white tulip are Carnival de Nice and parrot Estella Rijnveld but the black is not Queen of Night it is Continental which often looks more purple in pictures so I am hoping they come through as black as the label suggests.
it's still warm in japan at this time? hope you'll have a wonderful bloom upcoming spring!
Today is bloody freezing 🥶 but the weekend was still in the 20s (Celsius). I’m thinking it might be time to put the low tunnels up before the night time temps get too cold and kill off all my freesia like last year.
Can’t wait to see them
Me too! I have some plain red tulip and some red ranunculus that I’m hoping will look good with the blood splatter tulips. I have to think of a better name for them than that 😂
One of the best videos out there, thank you for a great presentation. beautiful and full of tops. Really top notch, thank you
Thank you so much, I’m really glad you found it useful 🌱
Those deep purple ranunculus look stunning!!! It's so nice to see all of your family enjoy the new garden. I hope you always have fun there!
The new garden is further away which means it’s become a bit of a family weekend affair. It’s a much wilder spot with trees to climb and hideouts to be made though so the kids are enjoying it so far.
I've never planted viola from seed but have had a few reseed from plants I've bought. I think it can lay dormant for a bit then sprout when you least expect it. Your freesia is really coming along nicely. You make it seem simple enough that I am wanting to try a few ranunculus...we'll see. Take care!
I’m hoping that’s the case or it’s going to be a really boring experiment 🤣 good luck with the ranunculus. There are so many fancy (expensive) varieties out there but honestly I like the simple ones best, if you can get them in slightly muted colours.
Hi Pheigi. Things are looking good in your new space. I have heard other gardeners say viola and pansies can take a long time to germinate though I've never grown either rom seed.
That good to know, thank you. I was starting to get a little worried as all the other seeds are popping up but there is almost nothing happening in the viola patch. The poppies are taking a while to get going too and I will be so upset if they don’t do well though I think I heard they like to wait for a frost before they start to show.
I grow dahlias and chrysanthemums in my garden because they were my grandmother's favourite. I believe that remembering a loved one through flowers is one of the best ways. Do show us your new tulip bulbs...You can never have enough tulips 😅
I just planted out aaaallllllll my tulip and made a wee video while doing it so you guys can see what's going in. Very different from last year's selection so I am looking forward to spring.
@@fromthewitchsgarden I look forward to it!!
I am wishing the clump of bulbs to be alliums 😊
That would be nice. They are growing tall and straight so they could be allium.
I used to plant freesia too when I was living in Tokyo. I plant them in pots then get all the bulbs and the babies (lots of them) during summer and plant them again in the fall. They are fragrant and are very easy to care for unlike the tulips.
I love the freesia smell. Other spring flowers have scent: daffodil, hyacinth but it is often too strong and overpowering but freesia are sweet and light and beautiful.
I’ve gone big into ranunculous after learning them for a couple of years. My new-to-me plants are irises. I’m sure those black tulips will go beautifully with the ranunculous
I have a couple of iris in my garden that come up nicely but I have a problem with vase life with them. They are native to Japan so you would think I would get masses of them but nope just a couple every year. Good luck with yours, they are beautiful🌱
im in 8b in Oregon and they came up beautifully in September, are 6 inches high and I expect them to withstand our cold just fine. Some of mine re seeded from last years crop and others I planted in pots and transplanted them in. I bet yours will do fine!
Oooooh this is great to hear! They are doing really well so far so fingers crossed 🌱
I'm likely giving up on the trying to grow sweet peas. After 3 years of little success, I think it's just too humid and hot here where I am in Virginia. Love your shirt!
Tis the season 🧙🏻♀️
Yeaaaahhh, that colour is simply stunning. I would not be able to resist them myself. Good luck 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💪💪💪💪💪
Me every video: I have no room in the garden, I don’t know where these are going to fit. Also me: so I bought new seeds cause they are super pretty…
could your mystery bulbs be crocus?
They do look a lot like crocus but I am almost 100% sure I didn’t have any in the old allotment.
Your planting so much to look forward to! That man that said your wasting your time and garden space growing flowers will secretly see your flowers blooming and they will bring him joy no matter how hard he denies it...=)
I look forward to giving him big bunches of flowers to take home to his wife 🖤
@@fromthewitchsgarden Heehee!
@@fromthewitchsgardenthat will be sweet!
Curious to see how the bulbs flower so close together.
I’m hoping for abundantly, tall and straight😬 I think this year will be good but I will have to keep an eye on it next year and see if I get lots of foliage and no flowers then I know it’s time to space things out more.
Your new allotment is going to be awesome 🧡
I know right 😬 I’m very excited for spring 🌱
I am sorry but I think you may be wrong here. Really am sorry. The soil is improved when you pull things out! It get more air and it's beneficial to everything in it. Why on earth farmers till the soil. I stumbled upon your channel and I do like it but yeah....
Don’t be sorry, each to their own though there is a lot of info about the benefits of no till gardening and on my small garden it makes sense. I do use my pitch fork to break up soil compaction and put air into the soil I just don’t turn it. I hope your garden is blooming beautifully.
I like your idea of planting tulips with dahlias. I'll be doing that tomorrow.
It was a really good pairing for me and I would really recommend it though this year I have had to move things around so will be putting my stock with my dahlia. I think it should work the same though with the dahlia starting to come through as the last of the stock is cut. Good luck with your tulip, I will be putting mine out in November and have some really pretty new varieties this year.
Those are definitely anemone corms
Great thank you, I hope they are going to make weird huge gnarly looking flowers to match the weirdness of the corms.
And you have water at your new allotment, as well. I'm sure this place will ultimately be worth all the trouble and heartbreak of moving your plants and the longer commute!!
I’m starting to see it may have been a blessing in disguise 🌱
Just beautiful, its the little things that bring so much joy
Thank you so much, it’s crazy how much joy a wee jar of flowers on the kitchen table brings me.
I do not know if you can find the rhizomes in Japan but have you considered growing papaver orientale? They have gorgeous colours and frills and they are right into your colour pallet. Buying bulbs can go very easily overboard, but I think you are doing well. With the Netherlands right next to Germany, we can get pretty much every bulb very easily and veryyy cheaply. So I've ended up buying about 15 kilos of bulbs just for my balcony. I'm hoping for a ton of blooms this spring because the blooms yield from all the perennials I had last year was not impressive at all. I look forward to seeing your bulbs in your new garden develop.
I do love oriental poppy but it is still illegal to grow them in Japan due to the effects of the opium wars. I have to be really careful with the poppies I grow here. I am very jealous of your bulb haul, your balcony is going to look amazing!
I think you will find those little hyacinth bulbs you brought online are most likely grape hyacinths (Muscari ) bulbs
I am concerned they will be very small but the bulbs are bigger than my muscari bulbs and the picture is definitely more of the full hyacinth form of flower. Also I have never seen deep red and peach muscari for sale. I am thinking they will just be very small/short hyacinth but I’m hoping the bulbs will bulk up over time as the colours are amazing.
Maybe tulip bulbs? The ones that might be dafs or not in the beginning... I'm over the heat too! ugh Those black tulips are my favorite...Queen of the Night. Hope the last trip to the old plot was good!
Yay for black tulip lovers! I heard Kay Von D moved to the middle of nowhere and planted a huge field of black tulip behind her gothic mansion and now it’s a big tourist attraction. I only have 5 bulbs but it’s a start, might take me longer to grow a gothic mansion though. I will add it to next seasons buy list 🤣
@@fromthewitchsgarden Yes to both! I'd take a field and a yurt...haha!
It’s Daffodils 22:57
Yay more daffodils, thank you!
Those black tulips are going to be beautiful! I can't grow any here because they are deers favorite snack. So daffodils it is💖
They are amazing aren’t they. I know they won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I love them!!!
I just went on eBay and ordered some seeds of Zinnia Senorita Pink before I forget. Hopefully a couple will germinate next summer. Also the combination of the deep burgundy amaranth with the all green zinnia you showed us is simply stunning!!!! Well done again on all the amazing blooms you created in that garden!!!
Thank you, I really missed the amaranth in the garden this year. It’s definitely back on the grow list. The queen lime zinnia series are my favourites too but the señorita were much bigger and showy…(off I go to buy seeds)
Hello
Hi
Thank you for sharing your journey. I'm looking forward to seeing how your new space does for you. Thank you for sharing your adorable family photos.
Thank you so much! It’s a fresh start, a slightly bigger spot, great soil and water on site so I am hoping for big full vases come spring.
@@fromthewitchsgarden ps, I just booked a trip to Scotland for next year. My great grandparents were Scottish.
Yay! I am jealous. Where are you planning to visit? I went to university in Edinburgh which is beautiful, I really miss nighttime walks across north bridge and down the Royal Mile and grass market, such a lovely vibe and the ghost tours are great. Everyone goes to Edinburgh though so , if you can, get up into the Highlands and Islands.
@@fromthewitchsgarden Thank you for the advice. I will look for those on our free days. Our group tour is taking us to Inverness, Speyside, Perthshire, St Andrews and Edinburgh.
Bummer about your low bulb recovery...ranunculus etc. I've dug my plants twice during moving house from state to various other states. Major work day for sure! Yay for a water tap! Is it drinkable water? I'm sure it is. Hope all your plant babies settle in with a good recovery. Can't wait to see next week how it went...=)
I was pretty devastated about the bulbs 😫 but considering I didn’t think I would have a garden at all a few weeks ago I’m trying to stay positive and the new garden is bigger so more plants YAY. I just found some bronze fennel seeds too, I had to get them from a fancy organic herb grower, I am really excited to see how they do but the picture on the front looks pretty. Thanks for the recommendation.
@@fromthewitchsgarden Great! I grew a Persian Basil that is so lovely. If you could get any of those seeds to grow I don't think you would be disappointed. It's really pretty while blooming and more so after.
