Charlie, as an unborn child, was made the vessel for King Paimon. The grandmother had tried to put Paimon into her own son - who was schizo (but not really because he was absolutely correct about the witchcraft going on) - but he committed suicide before she could finish. When Toni Collette became pregnant with Peter, she didn't want to keep him, but the grandmother insisted that she did because she saw this as another opportunity to try to bring Paimon into this world, however this really tore their relationship apart and Toni cut all ties with her. When Toni became pregnant again, she decided to rekindle with her mom, and this time, the grandmother wouldn't f*ck around. She immediately performed the ritual to have Paimon take over Charlie. An unborn child really doesn't have a mind of their own yet so there's no mental defenses to break down first. So all this time, Charlie was really Paimon in a child's body, not really understanding humanity, hence her/his strangeness, and this is also why the grandma was quite obsessed with taking care of Charlie, even wanting to breastfeed her/him as an infant. However, as seen in the grandmother's book, Paimon prefer the body of a man, hence the entire point of the movie: liberate Paimon from Charlie to be then transfered into a mentally broken Peter. In the end, the grandmother has succeeded in bringing her deity in her own bloodline, and so, she and her followers will be granted powers and richs even beyond the grave. Oh and, we can also deduce that Toni's sleepwalking and trying to kill Peter was in fact an unconscious effort (possibly incited by other forces...?) to prevent this event from taking place.
So yeah, this movie is filled with subtleties you don't really catch with just one viewing. Even the subject of mental illness that seems to be prevelent and relating to the entire familly is a clever misdirection. *Nobody* is crazy in this movie. You can even suppose that Toni's father that died from self-starvation as a result of mental illness was actually made to do it by witchcraft. Anyway, love this movie to death, though the last 20 minutes really disturb me to my core...

Lots of great details in this move. In the book, it says Paimon's return will be heralded by trumpets. When Paimon/Peter enters the treehouse, the score culminates in triumphant trumpets.

The miniatures also symbolized that everything that happened was inevitable. There was nothing the family could have done to change or stop it, which leaves the viewer with a sense of hopelessness and pointlessness. I think that's what Mrs was picking up on. Hereditary is an absolute masterpiece! The kind of horror that crawls under your skin and sticks on your mind long after viewing. It has incredible rewatch power as you pick up on new things with each viewing. Toni Collette was robbed of an Oscar for her amazing performance, but horror hardly gets its recognition. This is the first time I’ve ever seen the Mrs. literally pray during a movie. The sign of a great horror watching experience! Ari Aster’s follow up Midsommar is also good, Ari doesn’t rely on jump scares. His films do give that old school horror vibe, cerebral horror. Hereditary is a mix of real personal horrors (loss, grief, family coping with death) with the supernatural mixed in. Thank you for watching it!

      @Masky5150 2 года назад +7

@@nawlsone586 The rewatch power is definitely there as Ari Aster has loaded this film with great detail easily missed with just one watch. The footsteps in the attic before the family enter their home after the funeral, the herb (Dittany of Crete) used in the tea given to Annie and later put in the joint given to Peter under the bleachers (one of the friends is in the cult at the end) the same found in the jar with the dead mother's belongings, the couple from Midsommar (presumably) passing Annie as she's walking out of the art supply store, the naked cult members surrounding the house in that quick jump cut of the house from day to night after Annie is possessed. And on and on, there's still more that I'm sure I myself have missed. But it's all there. That's what I mean by rewatch power, it gets better and better every time I watch it and pick up on new things. It's praise is well deserved for just how much was put into this film. Ari Aster is a brilliant filmmaker. These kinds of films don't come along every day.

One of the interesting things about this is that the cult uses a drug to weaken Peter and Annie. When Peter is smoking "weed" under the bleacher, his friend (who gives him the "weed") is actually in the cult (you see him at the end bowing down). He actually gave him a drug that makes his mind more susceptible to possession. Same thing with Annie when Joan gives her the "tea" at her house. You'll notice there are grains in the cup and Annie feels something in her teeth. Notice that Annie says that her mom used to always want to "feed" Charlie when she was young because she was likely drugging her as well.

There's one thing that is hinted to in that movie that got changed after some test viewings. Peter's eyes were crossed out in drawings and in the last act he originally scratched out his eyes. I would have liked for that detail to be kept in the final cut.
When I was a kid, I couldn't get to sleep because I was afraid I'd scratch my eyes out while sleepwalking. It was just a manifestation of feeling like I have no control over my life. Peter doesn't have control over his life. They should have kept that in.
PS: If you are looking for other disturbing horror films check out "Possesor" and "The Empty Man"

There are so many things that happen in the background during the movie. And with "background" I mean sounds, small details and people in the shadows or some frames, that you can understand more of then movie if you catch up all that before the final act. So watching it for the 2nd time is so worth it hehe

There's a really awesome deleted scene right between the dinner scene and the shopping scene the morning after. The dad goes in Peter's room to check on him and Peter just breaks down in guilt and self loathing as his father holds him and reassures him it's not his fault. Annie's in her bed and hears her son's sobbing, she whispers to herself that she's sorry and starts sobbing as well. Before I watched this movie with my family, I specifically added that scene in there with my video editor.

They said the grandma had D.I.D. (formerly multiple personality) but I think she was really incubating the King of Hell inside herself so she could nurture it into Charlie during her pregnancy and then finally by breastfeeding her. Otherwise, it seems the only way to get a spirit out of a body so it can roam to another is through decapitation, which is why Annie needed to cut her head off to possess Peter, and why they needed Charlie to kill herself on accident.

Explaining the words on the wall: "Satony" is a word used in necromancy to call upon the dead. "liftoach pandemonium" means open chaos "liftoach" is Hebrew for open. It also is the capital of Hell in "Paradise Lost". Finally "Zazas" is a demon frequently conjured through Ouija boards. It was VERY disturbing researching this....

A lot of people when first watching initially really give shit to the brother and how he just drives away and gets in bed, I did too initially. But like most people after you see how much this event effected him past that initial shock and he starts to break down, I just can’t be upset with him… I remember being so mad he just went back like nothing happened, and even afterward for a while really questioning that decision. And then I read comments that described people’s first hand experiences and reactions to sudden traumatic events like that and it completely changed how I looked at it. Later in the movie when he’s in the cellar he’s telling himself it’s a dream, smacking himself and saying “wake up.” That might be part of the reason why in this immense shock, his brain unwilling to fully process what just happened, he goes straight to his bed, hoping he’ll wake up and everything will be fine. At another point, the second time he hears the tongue clicking in bed, he stands up, sees Charlie, and calls out to her, a part of him hoping and willing to believe she’s really there.
Also, can I just say how impressed I am with you guys and your ability to work out pretty much all the details of the story on your first watch? A lot of people don’t connect the pieces quite as quickly but y’all were ON it!

    Modern Horror Directors:
    Ari Aster
He made Hereditary, so his next film, Midsommar is an automatic recommendation.
Robert Eggers has also made 2 films. Both of them are period pieces and I recommend them both:
    The Witch (aka The VVitch)
    The Lighthouse
Jordan Peele has directed a couple of modern horror films:
    Get Out!
    Us
    Mike Flanagan:
So you’ve watched The Haunting of Hill House. I recommend his next two series on Netflix, The Haunting of Bly Manor and the more recent Midnight Mass.
He’s also got a good number of horror films under his belt:
    Oculus
    Hush
    Ouija: Origin of Evil
    Gerald’s Game
and Doctor Sleep which you’ve already seen.
John Krasinski has directed both of these superb films:
    A Quiet Place
    A Quiet Place 2
    Jennifer Kent directed The Babadook
Babak Anvari directed Under the Shadow
Richard Stanley directed The Color Out of Space
David Robert Mitchell directed It Follows
Panos Cosmatos directed Mandy. In my opinion there’s two kinds of people in the world, those who’ve seen Mandy and those who have yet to.
That’s everything I can think of.
